1. Hi-Tech Cheating The researcher will replicate the Common Sense Media/BenensonStrategy Group online poll of teenagers and parents on the use of digital media for cheating in school. Previous research suggests that there were no significant differences observed across private vs. public school. The researcher will conduct the poll specifically in the private Christian school population in the ACSISouth-Central Region.
2. Introduction Original study was conducted in June of 2009. Further validate the survey. Fill in the gaps in the research. (Private Christian Schools)
3. Research Problem Students are using technology in academically dishonest ways. The purpose of this study is to identify the ways that students use technology for academic dishonesty and to reveal their thoughts of what it means to cheat. The information gathered will help teachers and parents recognize the holes in students’ thinking.
5. Survey Research No hypothesis. Procedures used to collect data: Survey will be administered to students and parents of students aged 13-18 currently enrolled in grades 7-12 in ACSI South-Central Region schools. A minimum number of 1,000 students and 1,000 parents will be sampled from the entire population of ACSI South-Central Region schools beginning with the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and extending to a wider radius as needed.
6. Method of Data Analysis Analysis of variance (ANOVA) Question – When evaluating responses to a survey, is all analysis ANOVA? Example: 13 yr. old females answer that storing notes in your cell phone to use during a test is a (67%) serious offense while 15 yr. old males believe it is (54%) not cheating at all. (hypothetical scenario)
7. Role of the Researcher The researcher is to secure permissions required to conduct the survey for each campus as defined by each school’s research permissions procedures. The researcher will also be responsible for tabulating survey results.
8. Qualitatively Speaking… Change the questions to reflect a more qualitative approach. For example: If you have engaged in cheating with the use of digital media, please tell me why. What motivated your behavior? What can classroom teachers do better to lessen the frequency of this behavior? Thoughts?
