2. What is the Dustbowl?
The Dust Bowl was was a period of severe dust
storms that greatly damaged the ecology and
agriculture of the American and Canadian
prairies during the 1930’s; severe drought and a
failure to apply dryland farming methods to
prevent the aeolian processes caused the
phenomenon.
3. Cause of Dustbowl
Without the indigenous grasses in place, the
high winds that occur on the plains picked up
the topsoil and created the massive dust storms
that marked the dust storm period. The
persistent dry weather caused crops to fail,
leaving the plowed fields exposed to wind
erosion.
5. Effects of Dust Bowl
The massive dust storm forced farmers out of
business. Prices from the crops they were able
to grow fell below subsistence levels. In 1932,
the federal government sent aid to the drought-
affected states.

7. Dust Bowl Effects
The Dust Bowl made the Great Depression
worse.
Many farmers were poor and went out of
business because they couldn’t sell their crops.
Then Americans did not have a lot of food
because farmers could not grow crops to sell.
