CONTINGENCY PLANNING IN ACTION 2
Contingency Planning in Action Harry Bard Prof, Chisholm CIS 359 6/11/18
Contingency Planning in Action Introduction A contingency plan, according to Mehta and McCafferty, betokens the course of action which a company develops to enable it responds efficiently to any events that may occur or situations that may arise both shortly and in the long run. For a business firm, the future is an approaching series of uncertainties, and the best way to respond to these uncertainties is to prepare an action plan for combatting any matter that is likely to arise. Examples of such situations may include natural disasters like tornados, earthquakes, windstorms, and floods, fire outbreaks, loss of valuable data, loss of a sizable number of ...

Overview Ideal Fast Foods Limited Company is a chain of fast
food outlets and restaurants operating in the cities of Houston,
Dallas, and San Antonio in Texas, and within Philadelphia and
Erie in Pennsylvania. It was established by Brian 10 years ago
as a sole proprietor business with a single outlet in Houston.
The company has since undergone a palpable proliferation,
extending its tentacles to every state and every city. Arguably,
Ideal Fast Foods Limited is currently the fastest growing fast
food company in the United States. The company prides itself as
the ultimate ideal in the supply of pizza, tacos, chicken fries,
chicken nuggets, hamburgers, French fries, chips, fish, ice
creams, salads, pitas, and sandwiches. The company has over
250 outlets with more than a thousand employees assigned
different roles within the outlets. The chief executive officer,
Brian, appoints a board of directors who are responsible for
decision-making and management of day-to-day operations of
the company. Even though the main offices of the company are
located in Houston, all operational activities are done at the
outlets. The company has several distributors who supply
products to remote customers.
Moreover, the company uses distributed systems technological
strategies and synchronizes all activities through the use of
evenly-distributed servers. The beauty of this system is that it
gives a real-time reflection of every operation from every
outlet. The company has great prestige for the employment of
such sophisticated technology. The advantages of using such
technological strategies far outweigh the cost thereof. Along
with numerous other advantages, the systems ensure superfluity
of data which reduces the chances of the company losing large
amounts of valuable data. Additionally, the company uses Entity
6. Resource Planning (ERP) system to integrate the collection,
storage, management and analysis of data from all the
operations taking place in every outlet.

The activities include purchasing, manufacturing and

The system is also useful in the management of employees since
it records every action performed by the employees. The use of
ERP has the company to efficiently keep track of all daily
operations and to resolve actions which might raise conflicting
outcomes in the long run.
As already mentioned, every organization has a threat and a
challenge that it has to contend with, and Ideal Fast Foods is
not exempted from this abstract principle. The following are
some of the challenges that mar the operational confines of the
7. company:
i. Stiff competition from the vast number of upcoming fast food
companies. Some of these enterprises even offer products at
lower prices to attract customers. Hence they pose a
considerable threat to this company.
ii.
2
Loss of employees.

Loss of employees
Source - Another student's paper
· Loss of employees
Some employees have been in the habit of complaining that the
wages they receive are not commensurate with the work they
perform. Such a grumbling generally spread like bushfire and
has not only spread throughout the outlets but also caused a
cascade of undesirable outcomes like employees quitting their
jobs. This causes one of the most dreaded outcomes; loss of
experienced employees to the competitors.
iii. Loss of suppliers who are always on a spree to chase
‘greener pastures.’ Suppliers are very sensitive stake
8. players in every business and loss thereof might even translate
to the closure of the business. Unfortunately, the emerging
enterprises tend to invest more on their suppliers, thereby
attracting more suppliers from the Ideal Fast Foods Limited.
This implies that the Ideal fast Foods will have to pay higher
prices than before to retain their trusted suppliers, or else it
faces the sad reality of losing customers.
iv. Potential data loss. The distributed systems used at Ideal fast
Foods are not robust enough. Hence, certain events might occur,
causing loss of the substantial amount of data. Such events that
jeopardize the validity of data, an attack on the systems by
malware may also cause loss of data to competitors because
certain competitors might even hack the systems to get away
with valuable information.
v. Along with the accidental loss of data, the company also
stands the risk of system breaches which may lead to leakage of
confidential information to unwanted parties. Such attacks
include spoofing.
vi. Natural catastrophes such as fire, flood, and earthquakes.
The company is not immune to such natural disasters, and it is
not easy to tell when they might occur.
Based on these risks, it is quite imperative for the company to
come up with an alternative plan which will ensure that the
company remains standing even amid such challenges.
According to (), a company that waits for problems to arise so
that it reacts to them stands doomed in case the reactive
measures fail. Hence, the company needs a contingency plan to
ensure an efficient response in case any of these threats unfold.
The Contingency Plan Business Impact Analysis (BIA) Business
Impact Analysis gives valuable data on the systems and the
potential damages that might present themselves in the course
of business operation. Hence, BIA forms the frontline of BCMT
for Ideal Fast Foods, and it is vital to have it in the initial
stages of planning to enable the company to have a leeway into
the possible impacts of every possible threat, and a
comprehensive overview of the possible threats that can befall
9. the organization.

structural support of business contingency planning at My
Resource Service Center is the Business Management Team
This is the team that will respond in case of a disaster and
initiates certain actions to ensure recovery of all the data lost
during the disaster. For instance, in case of fire outbreak that
razes all the storage facilities of one of the outlet restaurants or
even the main inventory, the business management team will
ensure that data recovery process is initiated as swift as
possible to ensure that the normal business operations resume as
soon as is practically possible. McCafferty and Mehta (2006)
recommend that data recovery after such disasters should not
take more than one month. This implies that the organization
