The Year of the Forests: The Year of the Forests: a call for the protection and restoration of all natural forests Did you know that 2011 has been declared as the International Year of Forests by the United Nations (UN)? According to the UN Forum on Forests, the declaration was aimed “to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.”
Adopt a Seedling Campaign Give A Gift Tree PhP100 plants a seedling. Be part of the solution. With every tree planted, the beat of life continues. Global problems may be big but they can be tackled by individual actions. Each of us can do something about climate change through tree planting of native tree species. The decisions you make— from turning on a light switch to riding a car or plane— here and now may have an effect far away and long into the future. The good news is that through tree planting of native trees we are bringing back the natural sequesters of CO2, and the impacts of climate change are abated. Revival of our rainforests is vital to our survival and ensures water supply for agriculture, energy and our household needs. For any occasion, when you give a gift to plant native trees, you’ll delight your loved ones. A gift that endures a lifetime and helps make a lasting difference now and for future generations.Your gift directly benefits Haribon’s ROAD to 2020, a campaign that aims to plant native trees to restore 1 million hectares of forests in the Philippines by year 2020. For PhP100/seedling, you can support our forest restoration activities in Caliraya Watershed in Laguna and denuded forests around the country. You are welcome to plant your seedlings with us.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Make a donation to help save the environment Why donate to Haribon? Donations help us not only buy specific equipment, information and educational materials but, more importantly, it buys skills and time for our project sites. With your support, we will be able to continue guiding and passing on skills on environmental conservation and protection to our communities without the worry of time and budget constraints.

  • 29. HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • 33. VOLUNTEER Protecting our country’s endangered species and their habitats is a daunting task and Haribon at times has to rely on the volunteers to accomplish its work. Volunteers are sometimes needed for campaigns, to do legwork, to produce educational materials, to do research. Most volunteer work is done here in Metro Manila, but volunteers sometimes also get sent to sites outside Metro Manila.   If you have time to spare, some loose change to spare, and most importantly lots of enthusiasm for nature, give us a call. We can’t promise you any monetary reward, but sometimes knowing you have made a difference, made the country a better place to live in in your own small way, is already reward enough. However, we are currently designing a more responsive volunteer program to ensure that volunteers get a fuller richer experience while working with Haribon. Please visit the website regularly to keep yourself updated on our volunteer program. Give us a call at 434-4642 / 421-1213, or email act@haribon.org.ph This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to know more.

  • 36. GLOBAL WARMING The economic value of the water-storing function of forests “can often be significantly higher than the potential timber value of those forests”, according to a 2009 technical paper of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (CBD Technical Series No. 47). The document further states that forests help not only in storing water but also in improving its quality, as it reduces erosion and keeps rainwater within forest beds, away from pollutants. Yet the facts are that 50 of our 421 rivers are biologically dead, only one third of our river systems are potential sources for drinking water, and more than half of our groundwater, intended for our drinking water supply, are contaminated with coliform, all according to the National Water Resources Board. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council pegged the amount of damages from 2009's tropical storm Ondoy at P10.45 billion. Forests therefore have a role not only in protecting and increasing water supply but also in improving water quality. At the same time, it also helps prevent flooding because of its water-storage function. But to date, less than one-fourth of the country is still covered with forests, according to forestry statistics of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Dean Rex Victor Cruz of the University of the Philippines Los Banos also reveals that based on his research shows the country needs at least 40% forest cover just to maintain its water-related functions. The Sagip GUBAT (saGipinUgatngBuhay At Tubig) network reiterates its call for the protection and restoration of our forests and for the enactment of the Forest Resources Bill, which embodies these principles. Sagip GUBAT was created last March as a national network of forest conservation advocates.
