This document discusses the large energy consumption of the existing Internet architecture and proposes motivations for a greener and more energy-efficient Internet. It notes that the "always on" nature of routers, servers, and other Internet infrastructure requires huge amounts of energy to operate continuously. For example, a single rack of six carrier-grade routers consumes over 2.5 megawatts of power, comparable to 2.5% of a nuclear power plant's output. Additionally, all the heat generated requires extensive cooling which further increases energy use. The document argues that with rising fuel costs, the financial and environmental costs of the current model are unsustainable and new approaches are needed to reduce the Internet's energy footprint and make it greener.
