1. Inclusion has become a major issue in the classroom in recent years as more students continue to be
diagnosed with learning and behavior disabilities which inhibit their ability to perform up to standard
academically. Mainstreaming students has been used as a common term when referring to the
placement of special education students in the regular education classroom. Federal law requires that a
significant effort be made to find an inclusive placement. IDEA recognizes that not all students belong in
the regular classroom. This requires school districts to have a continuum of other placements available
to accommodate the needs of all children with disabilities.
