Save The Music Thesis
VH1 Save the Music provides "35,000 worth of high quality, new musical instruments to public
elementary and middle schools and [...] are able to jump–start beginning music programs across the
country". This agency, VH1 Save the Music, helps young lives around the world develop or advance
in an art that is becoming known lesser in the world. I believe that this organization could thrive
further than it already has by having people share their qualities. I believe that I have the qualities
necessary to benefit this institution. I can contribute my attributes to "VH1 Save the Music" through
my talent of being able to play a musical instrument, connect and relate with adolescents, as well as
speaking on how important instrumental music has been in my life and how it can change others. ...

First, When children play an instrument "he or she [develops] key brain [functions] that enhance
musical learning but also academic and social skills which [...] [improve] memory and the ability to
differentiate sounds and speech". As a result, this could mean that students who do not play a
musical instrument will be lacking an important aspect that instrument playing students do have.
Second, music has done so much that "research has proven that access to a quality music education
engages students in the classroom and increases graduation rates". Participating with an instrument
can ultimately help students perform better in an academic setting which can take students very far
in life. Lastly, Public polls in America show that " 89% of principals feel that a high–quality music
education program contributes to their school achieving higher graduation rates". A students success

The Effect Of Gene-Environment On Bianca's Talent
In order to explain how gene–environment promoted Bianca's talent, it is important to note that her
parents are talented musicians, she asks to attend a special music high school during the adolescent
stage in her development, she has been in a musical environment since she was 4. As mostly people
who have the option of choosing an environment that complements their heredity are older children,
adolescents, and adults, Bianca is now choosing what she has seen all her life. Now she is deciding
by herself, but most of her life, she has been around this musical environment. Furthermore, her
musical talent heredity, has permitted her to play very well, which serves as motivation to continue
playing. As it has been a good experience, she must feel

The Goat Rodeo Session Analysis
Instruments are a diverse class of tools that can be made of anything from brass to ebony and range
from the size of a pencil to a smart car; musicians manipulate these tools to help convey an idea or
emotion to their audience. One of the most common instruments, the piano, is highly versatile and
has been played in nearly every genre: Rhythm and Blues, Orchestral, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rap, and
many more. But the truth is, genres have set platforms of instruments associated with each one and
many musicians respect that by applying only those instruments to their respected genre. However,
performing artist Chris Thile is currently expanding what genres are associated with the Mandolin
through his music. Thile is diversifying the musical field by ... Show more content on

Bluegrass incorporates sad slow Blues with twangy Country so, to begin with, it is a mixed genre;
however, Thile has gone far beyond incorporating two genres with his Mandolin. In 2013, Thile
released a solo album of Bach Sonatas played on Mandolin; being the first in existence, Thile's Bach
performance set a high standard with precise and accurate playing that mimicked how the sonatas
would traditionally be played on the piano. Not only did Thile prove that the Mandolin could handle
delicate and complex pieces through his rendition of the Bach sonatas, Chris Thile added the sonatas
to his repertoire and began incorporating other genres into the sonatas at his live performances.
Interpreting Bach sonatas, usually regarded as nearly perfect pieces, is a bold move in the world of
music but, Thile has manipulated the sonata's with eloquence through his proficiency on Mandolin.
In developing new musical techniques for the Mandolin, Thile has shown musicians that there is still
more to be discovered about instruments and musical compositions. Again, Thile contributes new
techniques to the musical field, helping to increase the diversity within it and setting a legacy for
other artists to follow

How Musical Instruments Has Affected Society
Musical instruments have played many major roles in helping with the construction of many
societies around the world today. Many people do not realize what musical instruments have been
responsible for and how they have helped shape the world today. There have been many instruments
that have helped create and sculpt the world, but one instrument that I want to inform readers about
is the trumpet and where it came from, as well as how it has changed over many years. The point
that I am arguing is the fact that many people do not know where the trumpet has come from and
how it has affected society. The trumpet has been used for many years for many different uses that
many folks do not even know about or have even thought about. In ... Show more content on

It is very unfortunate that the youth of the world today do not know how little things such as where
the trumpet came from has affected society and possibly the way they live there own life.
Today the trumpet is used for making music in many different kinds of musical situations. It is used
in musicals with other instruments for theme music as well as dance music. The modern day trumpet
is also used in marching bands, concert bands, as well as jazz bands. My favorite setting where the
trumpet is used is brass choir, where only two trumpets are used along with a trombone, tuba, and
French horn. There are so many venues that the trumpet is used that many do not think about, such
as rock bands and even country bands. When most people think of the trumpet, they think of
marching bands or concert bands, but in reality the trumpet has a much wider variety that it is used
for in today's world than many think. According to Edward Tarr in his book titled, "The Trumpet,"
he explains that the use of an instrument called a "trumpa" was used and was locally referred to as a
"tubae." "As Richard was pausing in Sicily before setting out for Palestine, a new kind of instrument
– the trumpa – was demonstrated to him. Roger of Wendover (d. 1236) wrote about 'tubae called the
trumpae'. This instrument was mentioned for the first time around the year 1180 in

The Effects Of Music On Children 's Music
ESSAY SUPER FINAL:
Music is important to children. Some of them want to listen to it alone trough headphones, others
are wishing to sing, hum, whistle, or chant it. Some want to play musical instruments – solo or with
friends. Others enjoy dancing to it. Some wish to create "new music".
Whether listening, singing, playing, moving, or creating music, musical experiences are prominent
in the lives of children.
All children are musical. In different forms and degrees, children possess the capacity to become
musical than may currently demonstrate. They listen, sing, dance, play and express themselves
musically with little or no previous training.
Children are capable of careful and attentive listening, so they are able to perceive and understand
the musical language, they can create and recreate. Because most children most children possess the
physical capability to hear sounds, they can be led to listening intelligently to the manner in which
these sounds are organized as a music.
Children can response to music through movement in controlled and expressive way. To follow of
the musical pulse is one of the initial milestones in movement development. This skill is directly
related to attentive listening.
Musical performance on an instrument is more sophisticated musical activity. All children who are
good listeners, and who have the interest and discipline to take daily time to build both physical and
musical skills, will make good players.
Children may begin with musical

Drum-Early History: The Invention Of Musical Instruments
The Invention of Percussion

"The use of drums has been recognized as being able to put people into spiritual trances throughout
history. The drum is a musical instrument with great power and presence that gives the "pulse" or
backbone to the music it is incorporated with." 1 This quote from the article The History of the
Drum – Early History, describes how much impact the musical instrument has on human beings, as
well as the influence it has on the music it is performed with. Seemingly, this makes the drum
appear to have a major effect on society, and more so the culture during specific time periods as

As culture and society has grown, changed, so have percussion and the instruments used. When
looking back, the impact drums and percussion had on these peoples is unprecedented. As said by
many artists and musicians alike, drums are the backbone of any piece of music or band. What
started as a simple object played with your hands has turned into a diverse, complex range of
diversified snares, toms, bass drums, etc. Many current percussion and set players today trace the
roots of their art and style back to the time periods mentioned. African percussion items like the
djembe are still used in bands today, and are being produced and sold by the biggest brands in the
drum industry. The instruments discovered in the past have encouraged many of us, including
myself, to take a look at what we used to play as a community, and how it brought us together or
even gave us hope, as witnessed during the Middle Ages. Percussion was a vital part of many
cultures and now we hear it in everything: in the background of a commercial, in the beat of a song,
or even in something as simple as a song you're stuck listening to in an

Analysis Of Peter And The Wolf
Peter and the Wolf A General Music Unit for First Grade Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the wolf
in 1936 to teach young children the instruments of the orchestra. Prokofiev wrote both the story and
composed the music, creating a symphonic fairy tale that has been enjoyed by children for decades.
The work is in three sections which makes the story and music easy for children to follow. The
beginning section introduces characters in the story, each represented by a musical instrument. The
middle section develops the exciting story. The third and final section summarizes the story and
serves as a review of each musical theme as characters join in a parade at the end.
Teaching six–eight years olds the story of Peter and the Wolf is a wonderful opportunity to use brain
compatible strategies in the music classroom. Below is a description of how such a unit would be
organized and presented to students in six thirty–minute music lessons over a two week period.
On day one of the Peter and the Wolf unit students are introduced to the composer Sergei Prokofiev
in an age appropriate manner. Young students enjoy learning where famous musicians lived, details
of their childhoods, and always–when and how they died. After a brief introduction, students watch
a movie of Peter and the Wolf. Students love watching the action of all the animals and learning of
the brave boy who one day captured a wolf! Self reflection at the conclusion of the lesson would be

There is a political subject when it comes to golf's competition governments. The international

How Technology Has Influenced The Music Industry
"We shape our tools thereafter our tools shape us"
Technology has had a profound effect on our civilisation and culture, and this has been reflected in
the changing state of the music industry. This includes the development of virtual instruments, the
accessibility to digital audio workstation technology, file sharing, online music streaming, the
growth and development of social media platforms, and digital instruments. We live in an age where
it is becoming increasingly easier to produce, obtain, share and discover music. This paper will
explore some of the ways in which technology has influenced the music industry, with a focus on
the diminishing need for musical talent.
MIDI was originally invented in order to allow electronic musical devices to communicate with one
another. This development opened up an entirely new era of musical processing. In an interview
with Tom Bateman of BBC radio, creator of MIDI Dave Smith explains
"The computers were fast enough to be able to sequence notes, control the number of keyboards and
drum machines at the same time...it kind of opened up a whole new industry."1
Not only did MIDI open up a new industry for musical processing, but the technology was later
integrated into computer software as a VST plugin in a vitalised form, allowing for the creation of
virtual instruments. The aim of virtual instrument software exists to manufacture the sounds of
physical instruments through recording, in order to produce the same instrument sound

Gutenberg 's Printing Press And Its Impact On The...
Due to the advancement of printing technology, specifically Gutenberg 's printing press around
1450, notated music could be produced at a much higher capacity. The printing of liturgical books,
however, did not commence until 1473, but it rapidly increased until Ottaviano Petrucci had printed
59 volumes of sheet music by 1523.1 Nevertheless, the process was slow and tedious. Grout and
Palisca note:
"each sheet went through the press three times: once to print the staff lines, another time to print the
words, and a third to print the notes. The process was long, difficult and expensive, and some
printers soon reduced it to two impressions, one for the words and one for the music."2
Thus, it would anachronistic to suppose that by acknowledging that publishers of the Middle Ages
printed music, they did it in the same way it is done today. Printing did, all things considered,
increase the volume of publications, but it was still at a slow rate. This did not, however, hinder the
new applications of printed music, but rather gave sheet music new life. Musical pieces could now
be produced at higher volumes and spread throughout churches around the world. Printed music,
moreover, was cheaper due to the higher quantity available, which enabled amateur and professional
musicians alike to, as Grout and Palisca note, "form vocal, instrumental, and mixed ensembles to
perform the available repertory."3 Furthermore, higher quantities and easier reproduction of printed
music ensured it

Music is an essential part of a countless number of people's lives in the world today. Music serves as

The elements of music contain many categories and subcategories that cannot exist without each
other. Stanley Sadie states that music "has been defined as 'organized sound'" (Sadie 14). The word
"organized" here is a bit understated. Music is the most organized of all the arts. If music are not
organized correctly, it will not sound right or even be able to be played at times. Even in the most
technical and complicated genres like Jazz there is still organized. In solos there has to be organized
or the solo won't sound good, throw off the rest of the band, and do many other things that would
make a piece of music not enjoyable to listen to. Sadie states all elements of music. He talks of
notation which include pitch, octaves, scales, and intervals. Next there is rhythm which includes
pulse/tempo, meter, notation of rhythm, and time/meter signatures. Then he gets into the melody of
music which is where the notation and rhythm play out, he involves in melody the subcategory of
cadence. Cadence is better defined as "a melodic or harmonic configuration that creates a sense of
resolution [finality or pause]" (Randel). He then goes onto key/tonality which consists of tonic,
dominant; key signatures; major, minor; modulation; and modes. He covers harmony which
comprises chords, triads and consonance and dissonance. Counterpoint/polyphony is his next
element which incorporates imitation. His last musical element that he covers is

How Music Affects The Brain And People 's Emotions
iSearch Paper: The Power of Music
For my iSearch paper I am researching how music affects the brain and people 's emotions.
Although this is a complex issue, my passion has always involved music and an interest in how it
affects how people react and think. I play the violin, and from personal experience I have noticed
that when I am playing I have an emotional connection to the piece, whether it is sad, happy, or even
upsetting. I have also noticed that the audience has an emotional impact based on what was
performed. I plan to research scientific journals that record information and tests on how listening to
music affects the brain and to look for documentation of someone exposing music to a culture that
has no access to music and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, I would like to know if music has an effect on the brain that is significant enough for people to
consider having their kids learn an instrument in order to get a head start on school and boost their
intelligence.
I began and followed my research plan by starting out by picking a few articles that discuss music in
relation to the brain. I picked my article out based on what interests me most, which is music. I
began by researching how music effects people and what emotional impact it has on people. Then, I
came across articles with information about projects and research that had been done involving the
brain and its connection to the spoken language. So far, I have located my sources through the
internet using google. All of the articles that I have found have been very helpful and include
sources of experiments done with results. They also include quotes from the researchers involved
with the experiment and comments made by renowned scientist like Darwin. I had to form questions
based off of the articles and use information I already had from being a musician to help with that
process. Questions that helped guide my research were based on experiments that had been done
regarding the brain and the question of how musical communication evolved. The emotional and
universal aspect also brought up interest throughout my research that inspired a few questions about
music today compared to music in the past. I found evidence to back up my

Musical Instrument Benefit An Individual
Learning to play any musical instrument benefits an individual in all aspects of life, whether it 's
academically, socially, physically, or emotionally. Instruments that were created to make musical
sounds are categorized into five main groups; strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards.
And all it takes is dedication and admiration in order to successfully learn how to play an
instrument. I believe that musicians, those who have musical ability, have an advantage over other
individuals who don 't have the knowledge to play an instrument. Becoming a musician, will also
open up so many opportunities that are undeniably gratifying. As a child, from the day I was born
until I was capable of choosing my own genre of music to listen to, my mother has always played
classical music around me, whether it was an attempt to make me fall asleep, or to simply relax her
nerves of having to listen to me constantly cry throughout the day. Out of five children, my mother
seemed to have only played classical music around me and in a sense, I feel that that experience
grew with me. Of course, it 's not a direct reasoning, but till this day, being the only child interested
in instruments, I feel that the constant playing of this genre of music influenced my view on
instruments. The first appearance, musical instruments made in my life was during the third grade
while my middle school music instructor visited each class demonstrating and introducing the

Sleeping Beauty

look as if you actually went back in time and were a part of the performance. The stage was
enhanced with beautiful cool, calming purples, pinks, and blues that matched the performers' outfits

He was continuously on beat with the others and he made the rhythm sound so "jazz like," which is
my most favorite type of music. The way Berg performed made me want to snap my fingers and bob
my head. He did a fantastic job.
The cellos sounded perfect throughout the whole performance. I am not sure the music would sound
as good as it did without them. The way they played so smooth, going along with the dancers was
very calming, yet suspenseful. Without the cellos, I do not believe the musicians would be able to
produce such a heart throbbing sound.
The viola was a new sound to me. When I first heard the sound, I just assumed it was the violin. I
know I have heard it played before, but I have never paid attention to it specifically. The fact that it
does not have such a high pitch as the violin amazes me, because they look almost the same. I like
that it has a wider range of sound and is not deep like a tuba or cello, and that is why I think I could
not pin point a viola before. I am glad I know what one is now, because I can only imagine being a
viola player, and not be noticed for such a gorgeous sound one can make.
The timpani drum was a new instrument to me as well. I am not sure if I have ever heard a timpani
drum played; if I have, I never knew the musical term for it. When Timothy Crockett banged the
timpani, my heart could feel its deep base. I wish I had paid more attention to it when I had attended
other plays. It really is a striking sound

Essay on European Music History
Questions to Consider: Europe
1. How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics
in places such as Spain and Bulgaria?
In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma was
used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style. And
because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence because
they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. This was a European
characteristic. Their music is very colorful and lively and I think that was Arabic influence.
2. What defines a music as "classical" as opposed to "folk" in the European context? How ... Show

An easy to play folk instrument is the hurdy gurdy. In the text it even says it's "foolproof". To play
it, you just have to turn a crank and press some keys.
A folk instrument needing more advanced techniques is the uilleann. It's from Ireland and it is the
more complex type of bagpipes in the world. It is complicating because it requires a lot of
coordination. A player has to use both of his arms and hands at the same time.
5. How are music and musical instruments used to express national identity in Europe?
I think the music and musical instruments expresses national identity in Europe because there are
different styles of music according to where they are from in Europe. And different countries have
different types of instruments. For example the bagpipes in Scotland. Many people recognize music
with pipes to be from Scotland or Ireland. Spain has flamenco and Russia has their balalaika. They
all express their nationality and where they are from. The countries in Europe have different types of
musical styles that are distinct to their own country and culture.
6. Is language a reliable demarcation of musical style in Europe? Why or why not?
I don't think language is a reliable separation of musical style in Europe because even if people from
different countries speak the same languages, they might have different types of styles. For example,
Ireland and Scotland are grouped together but their music is a bit different. They both play

Zero Musical Instrument
Throughout my life many different experiences and choices that I have decided to make whether or
not it would be enjoyable. Each one of my decisions affect what will happen next or in a few years.
Although many events have taken place, including playing an instrument, dropping my sister off at
the MTC, and getting braces, I wouldn't do anything different. Basically everyone in my immediate
family plays an instrument, so I decided to join them. Seeing as I have like zero musical ability, I
went for the easiest instrument I could find, a ukulele. Being the 8–year old self I was,
procrastination often occurred. I got bored of it and tried the violin in sixth grade with my peers; It
didn't work out. Sometime in January last year, I decided to actually try and I have actually started
to develop a talent for it. I can play basically anything as long as I have the notes. My younger
brothers want me to teach them how to play, but I'm still learning myself. My only sister, emphasis
on only, left me to be alone with three brothers. Where that isn't entirely true, seeing as my mom is
still there, it's pretty weird. We had a foreign exchange student for a while and he only recently left,

Benefits Of Playing A Musical Instrument
In third grade I was introduced to an orchestra program at my school district. This program was
designed for students who have no experience with the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Although I
already played the piano since age five, I thought learning the violin would be a fun experience. At
the time I was unaware how committed I would be to the violin, my impulsive 8 year old self was
simply intrigued with stringed instruments. 10 years later, I own my very own violin and continue to
improve my music skills. Why I have continued to play through all these years sometimes baffles
me; What are the benefits of playing a musical instrument?
Everyone should learn how to play a musical instrument.
Lutz Jancke, a psychologist at the University of Zurich, states: "Learning to play a musical
instrument has definite benefits and can increase IQ by seven points, in both children and adults."
Even when simply beginning to learn how to play an instrument, there is a significant difference in
brain improvement. Jancke continues: "We found that even in people over the age of 65 after four or
five months of playing a instrument for an hour a week there were strong changes in the brain."
Findings from the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry show that
learning a musical instrument reduces feelings of anxiety, expressing emotions, and gives better
attention skills to children. There is physical evidence that learning an instrument alters brain
development,

Persuasive Essay On Music Education
Music Education Despite the vast number of children who learn musical instruments, many people
still do not fully understand all the benefits of music education. When budget cuts and low funding
threaten course elimination, music is often one of the first to go. This should not be the case,
however, because "learning to play an instrument can build self–esteem, increase various social and
academic skills and can help them become a well–rounded person" (Montgomery). Music education
is incredibly valuable, especially for children. The benefits that children can gain from learning
music will make lasting impacts on them. Playing musical instruments has copious benefits on a
child's intellect, and social skills, and personal growth. Learning music has incredible benefits on
children's cognitive development and intelligence. Children gain many skills through music, and "a
child learning about music has to tap into multiple skill sets, often simultaneously" (Brown).
Learning music substantially helps children grow in other areas of learning. In a study by E. Glenn
Schellenberg, six–year–olds were given voice and piano lessons and their IQ's were compared to
six–year–olds without music lessons. At the end of the experiment, "...the children who were given
music lessons over the school year tested on average three IQ points higher than the other groups"
(Brown). When children are involved in music, they are increasing their intellectual capacity. The
ability to play or sing music can help children in math, english, and and problem solving. There
have been countless studies and research that show higher test scores and grades in musical students
when compared to non–musical students. In fact, "a research team exploring the link between music
and intelligence reported that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically
enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science"
(Shankar Mahadevan Academy). Music is an artistic area of study, but clearly has a strong impact on
important core subjects for students. Through understanding rhythm and scales, as well as beats per
measure, children can learn about fractions and other math skills. Reading the

Music was an important role of the ancient Egyptian lifestyle and is where many musical
instruments that are used today developed. It was played in temples for worship, during holidays

Live Coding Musical Instrument
The live coding musical instrument
"I dream of instruments obedient to my thought and which with their contribution of a whole new
world of unsuspected sounds, will lend themselves to the exigencies of my inner rhythm" (Edgard
Varèse 1937)
Live coding engages with a new concept of musical instrument, and with it, engages also with new
instrumental practices. Most live coding instruments consist of a laptop, speakers to hear the music
and a projector, to display the code to the audience. These instruments are far from uniform. Some
live coders use synthesisers and even controllers as an extension of the laptop. Other use instead of a
laptop, a Raspberry Pi with a keyboard and monitor attached. Some use audio interfaces, other use
only their mini jack port. Even for someone who uses the same laptop in every performance, each
venue completes the instrument in a different way, with different sound systems and projections.
And even if two live coders use the same programming language, they don't use it in the same way.
The software and its use determine the shape of this instrument that varies for each artist.
The embodiment of the instrument for live coding is very different from the one of the acoustic
musical instruments. Therefore the codes and even the body ... Show more content on

Argumentative Essay On Music Education
Music. It's different to everyone, even if everyone happened to be listening to the same thing. There
are health and emotional benefits that come with playing an instrument. It's so important that every
student gets a musical education because knowing an instrument is comparable to you exercising a
muscle; music is exercising the brain! The auditory cortex is working hard to process the sound,
while the nucleus accumbers, amygdala, and cerebellum are working hard to make you feel. Oh, and
you know when you know your favorite part of the song is coming up? Well, that's when your
prefrontal cortex is being activated and is getting anxious ("This is Your Brain on Music" by
Knowing Neurons). Being involved in music helps students do better in other subjects. Our brain
works harder when we play music, and it increases IQ and improves spatial–temporal skills, which
is when students can see elements that should go together, which improves math skills (PBS Parents,
"The Benefits of Music Education"). Music affects everyone, reading this might help you realize the
beauty of music, learn how it affected me meticulously, and other things about music education. I
have been playing the piano for about 3–4 years now, so it has affected my life a lot. First, I was
questioning taking a musical instrument because I knew it would take a lot of persistence, time, and
effort. On the other hand, I knew I would learn to play music that I loved. My parents and I came to
a conclusion, and that was that I was going to take the piano at Minton's Academy of Music. I
started off fine, but we didn't notice any improvement. So we switched teachers, and how I learned
changed dramatically. I went from struggling to read simple notes from sightreading songs almost
the moment I saw them. Why does this matter, and why should you believe you will see the same
results I did? Well, by participating in a music class I've learned the skill of perseverance. If I didn't
get a song, I would practice over and over again for weeks and months; I learned it is definitely
worth the immense effort. It has had an influence over other subjects and activities I participate in
too, such as math, science, and even swimming! Music has taught me to be patient,

Music From Delivering Authentic Arts Education
For the Arts Making activity the main resource I used was Chapter 9– Music from Delivering
Authentic Arts Education by Judith Dinham. The pages on making a percussion instrument gave me
ideas on what instrument to create, the materials I would need and the procedure to create it. Also,
the section on musical elements allowed me to understand the different aspects of singing and
making music which improved my technique and enhanced my performance. In addition, I watched
a few videos by singer, songwriter and singing teacher Jules Rendell. These taught me how to make
the most of my voice and gave me some tips on how to improve my vocals; thus, improving my
overall performance.
To assist me in the completion of my Arts Responding activity I found the video we watched in our
Week 12 workshop extremely valuable. This video, titled 'Instrument Families' by Andrea Burress,
examines the different musical instruments, categorises them into instrumental families and gives
examples of the sounds that each instrument produces. The knowledge I gained from this video
allowed me to detect which instruments were being played in each section of The Moldau and thus,
complete the Arts Responding activity. As well as this, I used a variety of websites, including the
Rockford Symphony Orchestra website and the In Mozart's Footsteps website. These assisted me in
analysing the musical elements featured in the Moldau and uncovering the inspiration behind the

Inanga: A Song of Survival in Daughter’s Rwanda
Transcending individual differences, music in Africa has proved to be more than just a collection of
notes and the production of sounds. Throughout this past semester, Professor B drew materials from
West, East and South Africa to demonstrate the powerful ability of music to bring and bind people
together. Consistently exemplified throughout African history, music has served as the unifying link
between generations. In the documentary, Inanga: A Song of Survival in Daughter's Rwanda, a
family's dedication to the preservation of the inanga instrument is explored against the backdrop of
the Rwandan genocide. Deeply embedded in history, tradition and culture, inanga reveals the
primary function of music in Africa. Though it is an instrument specific to Rwanda, it shares many
similarities to variety of instruments scattered across the continent. This certainly emphasizes the
undeniable function of African music in sustaining unique cultural practices. The story of inanga is
told through the narratives of Sophie Nzayisenga and her father, Kirusu Thomas. This highly
significant stringed instrument was originally exclusive to the male gender until Kirusu shared his
talents with his children. At the age of six, Sophie learned to play the inanga and quickly gravitated
towards her musical heritage. Following in the footsteps of the male generations before her, Sophie

Development of Musical Instruments
Throughout history, music has been influenced by the different events that transpire across the
world. As civilizations rise and fall, cultures combine and change; and with that, new music and
musical instruments are brought into existence. From each corner of the world and from all time
periods, music has grown. The places that music has dramatically developed the most are in China,
Europe, and America. Musical instruments in these locations have gone through a musical
"revolution" and have eventually become what we know so well today. China One of the earliest
locations that musical instruments were created and developed was China. Many of the instruments
during this period (500 – 1100 A.D.) that were being made were classified as zithers of idiophones.
Zithers are very similar to guitars since both share the quality of having strings, but do not have a
"neck." Idiophones are instruments where the body itself vibrates to create the sound much like
modern day percussion instruments. These types of instruments were brought into being by the
beliefs and teachings of people like Confucius, Mencius, and Laozi. These men "believed that music
was an essential part of character and community" and helped the creation of new instruments (1).
Many different styles of instruments came out of this time period. Instruments such as the Guqin,
Xiao flute, Sanxian, and Pipa were all created and modified with the rise of a style of music–
Nanguan. Nanguan was "a style of Chinese classical

between them so we could hear the notes playing. Then we use duct tape to piece them together and
made the flute bend a bit so it would be easier to play. After the prototype was done we played
around with it and decided to make the blueprints for the next instrument and base our design

practically had everything needed to make the next pan flute more precise. But we lost it. So we
made another pair of blueprints and we made a more accurate pan flute. This pan flute had cuts that
were more precise to a cm and had to be precise when putting the tape on it. We made many

Correlation Between Music and IQ in Children Essay
1. Introduction
This project investigates the effect which the playing of a musical instrument – namely the drums –
has on one's intelligence and academic ability. A search of the literature reveals that studies of this
kind have been conducted by other researchers in many parts of the world and has led to the
conclusion that music is an extremely healthy activity to be involved in.
A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano
lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Dye (2012)
reinforces this, stating that scientific research shows that studying music improves school

The aim of this study is to ascertain whether learning to play the drums increases one's IQ score or
not. Will learners who take daily drum lessons for two weeks improve their intelligence by
improving their memories and having their brains stimulated?
2. Review of Literature
A number of studies showing the relationship between the playing of musical instruments and IQ
development are discussed below. A few studies on the effect of drum lessons on brain development
are also considered.
2.1 Correlation between Music and IQ in children
In Canada, Schellenberg conducted a study on school children and college students and concluded
that those who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did
not (Munsey, 2006). Schellenberg also studied whether the effect of an increase in IQ would
continue to improve with more than a year's lessons and his most recent work has proven that this is
in fact the case. The study found that young adults who had taken music lessons in childhood did
have higher IQ's and better high school grades than people who didn't. He concluded that college
students who had played a musical instrument regularly as children were two points ahead in IQ

Every person on Earth has their own way of coping with the difficulties associated with life. As
people combat daily life, many find music to be beneficial to their health. Studies have shown that
music "can provide solace, release, strong sensations, and more" (Dean). There are certain people
who are more affected by such stimulation and are more susceptible to the effects of music. These
affects not only occur physically, but mentally as well. It was also discovered that "those who had
extra–curricular music classes, developed higher verbal IQ, and visual abilities, in comparison to
those with no musical training" (Forgeard). The effect of music on an individual is influenced by

There was a point system that awarded students based on the number of correctly sequenced
Students who had musical training averaged about three points higher than students who did not

with musical experience had more defined motor skills than students with no musical experience. It
has been noted that certain people can and will feel chills or "shivers" when listening to music.
Those who are truly open to music are the most affected by musical stimulation and are classified by
their openness to experience. These individuals are classified by their creativity, kindness, curiosity,
and an elevated interest in music. In order to classify a person to know if they will be open to chills
involves the "Big 5" personality traits. These traits are made up of neuroticism, extroversion,
agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. Openness to experience is defined as
the extent to which a person is imaginative, independent, and has a preference for variety. People
who score low on the "Openness to Experience" portion of the personality test seem to prefer a more
structured, straight–forward way of life and are not as likely to feel the same sensations while

Music: The Harmony of Culture Essay
Present in throughout the Hindu, Greek, and Judaic cultures, is the divine and meticulous use of
music in various ways. Similarly between these cultures, music is symbolic of the most important
and sacred concepts. The musical elements often exist to celebrate parts of the culture, to provide an
element of sound to express spiritually, and to worship one or more Gods. Furthermore, music has
occupied a central place in Hindu, Greek, and Judaic cultures, in which there are intrinsic musical
principles, an arrangement of different instruments, and several forms and textures within all three
cultures.
In Hindu culture, it believed that music has a spiritual journey. Nada Brahma is predominant
doctrine that means "Sound is God," similar to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another theory about music was "logos" and "pathos". The Dionysian approach emphasized
emotions, sensuality, desire, and function over form. Whereas, the Apollonian approach consisted of
concepts such as reason, self–restraint, and form over function. The idea of Ethos was thought mean
that "Good" music leads to ethical behavior and bad "music the opposite. Moreover, due to concept
of ethos, several Jews believed logos music was to be used as worship music and that played music
was simply not worthy of being played. Thus, there was an inherent difference in musical pieces and
instruments played amongst both cultures, and Hindu culture as well.
Indeed in Hindu culture, rhythm is a vital musical element. For example Shiva Nataraja, the Lord of
dance is dancing because there is a rhythm to the samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth. In
addition, there is a rhythmic system called the Tala that refers to recurring dynamic sequence that
comes to an end by finishing on the first beat of the cycle. The Tala moves into a timeless rhythmic
awareness of cyclical existence, the basic of all existence itself. Therefore the interrelationship
between music, rhythm, and dance is essential in Hindu culture.
Another form of music in Hindu culture is chanting, in which a text is taken and attached to a
monophonic chant. Usually, the tambura, a 4–6 stringed instrument

The Relationship Between Playing Musical Instruments And...
Over the years various researchers have raised concern about the relationship between playing
musical instruments and performance in math. Performing well in math is a significant requirement
in passing an examination. For this reason, extensive research has been conducted on some of how
students can improve their performance in math. According to Cindy Zhan, playing music
instruments engages the right hemisphere of the brain. On the other hand, tackling math problems
involves the left hemisphere of the brain. Playing musical instruments thus creates a correlation
between the two brain hemispheres and increases the brain thinking capacity. My prediction is that
playing musical instruments greatly increases a student's performance in math. The main purpose of
this investigation is to determine whether there is a relationship between playing musical
instruments and increased performance in math. Data that will be collected include the math grades
(American Grading System) of students playing musical instruments as well as for those who do
not. The math scores will be used to determine how high students scored an overall grade in math
and how good they are in playing musical instruments. The data which will be used will take the
average score for 100 or more students both who play the instruments and those who do not. I will
investigate the relationship between math scores and play various musical instruments. I will collect
data on the math scores of students playing

VH1 Save the Music Thesis: How Instrumental Music Programs Benefit Students

  • 1. Save The Music Thesis VH1 Save the Music provides "35,000 worth of high quality, new musical instruments to public elementary and middle schools and [...] are able to jump–start beginning music programs across the country". This agency, VH1 Save the Music, helps young lives around the world develop or advance in an art that is becoming known lesser in the world. I believe that this organization could thrive further than it already has by having people share their qualities. I believe that I have the qualities necessary to benefit this institution. I can contribute my attributes to "VH1 Save the Music" through my talent of being able to play a musical instrument, connect and relate with adolescents, as well as speaking on how important instrumental music has been in my life and how it can change others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, When children play an instrument "he or she [develops] key brain [functions] that enhance musical learning but also academic and social skills which [...] [improve] memory and the ability to differentiate sounds and speech". As a result, this could mean that students who do not play a musical instrument will be lacking an important aspect that instrument playing students do have. Second, music has done so much that "research has proven that access to a quality music education engages students in the classroom and increases graduation rates". Participating with an instrument can ultimately help students perform better in an academic setting which can take students very far in life. Lastly, Public polls in America show that " 89% of principals feel that a high–quality music education program contributes to their school achieving higher graduation rates". A students success is of the utmost importance and if VH1 Save the Music can contribute even a little to a students success then they have achieved their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Effect Of Gene-Environment On Bianca's Talent In order to explain how gene–environment promoted Bianca's talent, it is important to note that her parents are talented musicians, she asks to attend a special music high school during the adolescent stage in her development, she has been in a musical environment since she was 4. As mostly people who have the option of choosing an environment that complements their heredity are older children, adolescents, and adults, Bianca is now choosing what she has seen all her life. Now she is deciding by herself, but most of her life, she has been around this musical environment. Furthermore, her musical talent heredity, has permitted her to play very well, which serves as motivation to continue playing. As it has been a good experience, she must feel ... • 5. The Goat Rodeo Session Analysis Instruments are a diverse class of tools that can be made of anything from brass to ebony and range from the size of a pencil to a smart car; musicians manipulate these tools to help convey an idea or emotion to their audience. One of the most common instruments, the piano, is highly versatile and has been played in nearly every genre: Rhythm and Blues, Orchestral, Rock, Jazz, Pop, Rap, and many more. But the truth is, genres have set platforms of instruments associated with each one and many musicians respect that by applying only those instruments to their respected genre. However, performing artist Chris Thile is currently expanding what genres are associated with the Mandolin through his music. Thile is diversifying the musical field by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bluegrass incorporates sad slow Blues with twangy Country so, to begin with, it is a mixed genre; however, Thile has gone far beyond incorporating two genres with his Mandolin. In 2013, Thile released a solo album of Bach Sonatas played on Mandolin; being the first in existence, Thile's Bach performance set a high standard with precise and accurate playing that mimicked how the sonatas would traditionally be played on the piano. Not only did Thile prove that the Mandolin could handle delicate and complex pieces through his rendition of the Bach sonatas, Chris Thile added the sonatas to his repertoire and began incorporating other genres into the sonatas at his live performances. Interpreting Bach sonatas, usually regarded as nearly perfect pieces, is a bold move in the world of music but, Thile has manipulated the sonata's with eloquence through his proficiency on Mandolin. In developing new musical techniques for the Mandolin, Thile has shown musicians that there is still more to be discovered about instruments and musical compositions. Again, Thile contributes new techniques to the musical field, helping to increase the diversity within it and setting a legacy for other artists to follow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. How Musical Instruments Has Affected Society Musical instruments have played many major roles in helping with the construction of many societies around the world today. Many people do not realize what musical instruments have been responsible for and how they have helped shape the world today. There have been many instruments that have helped create and sculpt the world, but one instrument that I want to inform readers about is the trumpet and where it came from, as well as how it has changed over many years. The point that I am arguing is the fact that many people do not know where the trumpet has come from and how it has affected society. The trumpet has been used for many years for many different uses that many folks do not even know about or have even thought about. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is very unfortunate that the youth of the world today do not know how little things such as where the trumpet came from has affected society and possibly the way they live there own life. Today the trumpet is used for making music in many different kinds of musical situations. It is used in musicals with other instruments for theme music as well as dance music. The modern day trumpet is also used in marching bands, concert bands, as well as jazz bands. My favorite setting where the trumpet is used is brass choir, where only two trumpets are used along with a trombone, tuba, and French horn. There are so many venues that the trumpet is used that many do not think about, such as rock bands and even country bands. When most people think of the trumpet, they think of marching bands or concert bands, but in reality the trumpet has a much wider variety that it is used for in today's world than many think. According to Edward Tarr in his book titled, "The Trumpet," he explains that the use of an instrument called a "trumpa" was used and was locally referred to as a "tubae." "As Richard was pausing in Sicily before setting out for Palestine, a new kind of instrument – the trumpa – was demonstrated to him. Roger of Wendover (d. 1236) wrote about 'tubae called the trumpae'. This instrument was mentioned for the first time around the year 1180 in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Effects Of Music On Children 's Music ESSAY SUPER FINAL: Music is important to children. Some of them want to listen to it alone trough headphones, others are wishing to sing, hum, whistle, or chant it. Some want to play musical instruments – solo or with friends. Others enjoy dancing to it. Some wish to create "new music". Whether listening, singing, playing, moving, or creating music, musical experiences are prominent in the lives of children. All children are musical. In different forms and degrees, children possess the capacity to become musical than may currently demonstrate. They listen, sing, dance, play and express themselves musically with little or no previous training. Children are capable of careful and attentive listening, so they are able to perceive and understand the musical language, they can create and recreate. Because most children most children possess the physical capability to hear sounds, they can be led to listening intelligently to the manner in which these sounds are organized as a music. Children can response to music through movement in controlled and expressive way. To follow of the musical pulse is one of the initial milestones in movement development. This skill is directly related to attentive listening. Musical performance on an instrument is more sophisticated musical activity. All children who are good listeners, and who have the interest and discipline to take daily time to build both physical and musical skills, will make good players. Children may begin with musical ... • 11. Drum-Early History: The Invention Of Musical Instruments The Invention of Percussion Josh Crowell World Civilization 1 Brian Rafuse April 6th, 2017 "The use of drums has been recognized as being able to put people into spiritual trances throughout history. The drum is a musical instrument with great power and presence that gives the "pulse" or backbone to the music it is incorporated with." 1 This quote from the article The History of the Drum – Early History, describes how much impact the musical instrument has on human beings, as well as the influence it has on the music it is performed with. Seemingly, this makes the drum appear to have a major effect on society, and more so the culture during specific time periods as well. One of the earliest known forms of these dates back ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As culture and society has grown, changed, so have percussion and the instruments used. When looking back, the impact drums and percussion had on these peoples is unprecedented. As said by many artists and musicians alike, drums are the backbone of any piece of music or band. What started as a simple object played with your hands has turned into a diverse, complex range of diversified snares, toms, bass drums, etc. Many current percussion and set players today trace the roots of their art and style back to the time periods mentioned. African percussion items like the djembe are still used in bands today, and are being produced and sold by the biggest brands in the drum industry. The instruments discovered in the past have encouraged many of us, including myself, to take a look at what we used to play as a community, and how it brought us together or even gave us hope, as witnessed during the Middle Ages. Percussion was a vital part of many cultures and now we hear it in everything: in the background of a commercial, in the beat of a song, or even in something as simple as a song you're stuck listening to in an ... • 13. Analysis Of Peter And The Wolf Peter and the Wolf A General Music Unit for First Grade Sergei Prokofiev wrote Peter and the wolf in 1936 to teach young children the instruments of the orchestra. Prokofiev wrote both the story and composed the music, creating a symphonic fairy tale that has been enjoyed by children for decades. The work is in three sections which makes the story and music easy for children to follow. The beginning section introduces characters in the story, each represented by a musical instrument. The middle section develops the exciting story. The third and final section summarizes the story and serves as a review of each musical theme as characters join in a parade at the end. Teaching six–eight years olds the story of Peter and the Wolf is a wonderful opportunity to use brain compatible strategies in the music classroom. Below is a description of how such a unit would be organized and presented to students in six thirty–minute music lessons over a two week period. On day one of the Peter and the Wolf unit students are introduced to the composer Sergei Prokofiev in an age appropriate manner. Young students enjoy learning where famous musicians lived, details of their childhoods, and always–when and how they died. After a brief introduction, students watch a movie of Peter and the Wolf. Students love watching the action of all the animals and learning of the brave boy who one day captured a wolf! Self reflection at the conclusion of the lesson would be a simple exit slip or even a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the United States We Are Golf a coalition of golf industry leaders takes time each year to visit the US congress on National Golf Day, as a way to make sure their voice is heard. In regards to national governments there is no pressing or threatening political issue currently. There is a political subject when it comes to golf's competition governments. The international governing bodies the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club have imposed strict rules on dimension and design restrictions of golf clubs to be used during competitions. This creates a limitation to innovation for golf club companies. Nevertheless, there is no foreseeable issue here currently. Economic Economic trends impact golf substantially. When the economy is down it has negative effect on golf courses and golf equipment manufactures. Many golf courses have some ties to local governments on funding, with the recent recession and resulting budget cuts many courses have had to close. • 17. How Technology Has Influenced The Music Industry "We shape our tools thereafter our tools shape us" Technology has had a profound effect on our civilisation and culture, and this has been reflected in the changing state of the music industry. This includes the development of virtual instruments, the accessibility to digital audio workstation technology, file sharing, online music streaming, the growth and development of social media platforms, and digital instruments. We live in an age where it is becoming increasingly easier to produce, obtain, share and discover music. This paper will explore some of the ways in which technology has influenced the music industry, with a focus on the diminishing need for musical talent. MIDI was originally invented in order to allow electronic musical devices to communicate with one another. This development opened up an entirely new era of musical processing. In an interview with Tom Bateman of BBC radio, creator of MIDI Dave Smith explains "The computers were fast enough to be able to sequence notes, control the number of keyboards and drum machines at the same time...it kind of opened up a whole new industry."1 Not only did MIDI open up a new industry for musical processing, but the technology was later integrated into computer software as a VST plugin in a vitalised form, allowing for the creation of virtual instruments. The aim of virtual instrument software exists to manufacture the sounds of physical instruments through recording, in order to produce the same instrument sound ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Big Daddy Music Emporium sells and rents assorted musical instruments, provides music lessons for people of all ages, and provides instrument repairs. Through agreements with local school band programs and other networking, Big Daddy Music Emporium will be the exclusive music store for the entire Southwest Las Vegas area. • 23. Gutenberg 's Printing Press And Its Impact On The... Due to the advancement of printing technology, specifically Gutenberg 's printing press around 1450, notated music could be produced at a much higher capacity. The printing of liturgical books, however, did not commence until 1473, but it rapidly increased until Ottaviano Petrucci had printed 59 volumes of sheet music by 1523.1 Nevertheless, the process was slow and tedious. Grout and Palisca note: "each sheet went through the press three times: once to print the staff lines, another time to print the words, and a third to print the notes. The process was long, difficult and expensive, and some printers soon reduced it to two impressions, one for the words and one for the music."2 Thus, it would anachronistic to suppose that by acknowledging that publishers of the Middle Ages printed music, they did it in the same way it is done today. Printing did, all things considered, increase the volume of publications, but it was still at a slow rate. This did not, however, hinder the new applications of printed music, but rather gave sheet music new life. Musical pieces could now be produced at higher volumes and spread throughout churches around the world. Printed music, moreover, was cheaper due to the higher quantity available, which enabled amateur and professional musicians alike to, as Grout and Palisca note, "form vocal, instrumental, and mixed ensembles to perform the available repertory."3 Furthermore, higher quantities and easier reproduction of printed music ensured it ... The elements of music contain many categories and subcategories that cannot exist without each other. Stanley Sadie states that music "has been defined as 'organized sound'" (Sadie 14). The word "organized" here is a bit understated. Music is the most organized of all the arts. If music are not organized correctly, it will not sound right or even be able to be played at times. Even in the most technical and complicated genres like Jazz there is still organized. In solos there has to be organized or the solo won't sound good, throw off the rest of the band, and do many other things that would make a piece of music not enjoyable to listen to. Sadie states all elements of music. He talks of notation which include pitch, octaves, scales, and intervals. Next there is rhythm which includes pulse/tempo, meter, notation of rhythm, and time/meter signatures. Then he gets into the melody of music which is where the notation and rhythm play out, he involves in melody the subcategory of cadence. Cadence is better defined as "a melodic or harmonic configuration that creates a sense of resolution [finality or pause]" (Randel). He then goes onto key/tonality which consists of tonic, dominant; key signatures; major, minor; modulation; and modes. He covers harmony which comprises chords, triads and consonance and dissonance. Counterpoint/polyphony is his next element which incorporates imitation. His last musical element that he covers is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although this is a complex issue, my passion has always involved music and an interest in how it affects how people react and think. I play the violin, and from personal experience I have noticed that when I am playing I have an emotional connection to the piece, whether it is sad, happy, or even upsetting. I have also noticed that the audience has an emotional impact based on what was performed. I plan to research scientific journals that record information and tests on how listening to music affects the brain and to look for documentation of someone exposing music to a culture that has no access to music and ... I began by researching how music effects people and what emotional impact it has on people. Then, I came across articles with information about projects and research that had been done involving the brain and its connection to the spoken language. So far, I have located my sources through the internet using google. All of the articles that I have found have been very helpful and include sources of experiments done with results. They also include quotes from the researchers involved with the experiment and comments made by renowned scientist like Darwin. I had to form questions based off of the articles and use information I already had from being a musician to help with that process. Questions that helped guide my research were based on experiments that had been done regarding the brain and the question of how musical communication evolved. The emotional and universal aspect also brought up interest throughout my research that inspired a few questions about music today compared to music in the past. I found evidence to back up my ... Musical Instrument Benefit An Individual Learning to play any musical instrument benefits an individual in all aspects of life, whether it 's academically, socially, physically, or emotionally. Instruments that were created to make musical sounds are categorized into five main groups; strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and keyboards. And all it takes is dedication and admiration in order to successfully learn how to play an instrument. I believe that musicians, those who have musical ability, have an advantage over other individuals who don 't have the knowledge to play an instrument. Becoming a musician, will also open up so many opportunities that are undeniably gratifying. As a child, from the day I was born until I was capable of choosing my own genre of music to listen to, my mother has always played classical music around me, whether it was an attempt to make me fall asleep, or to simply relax her nerves of having to listen to me constantly cry throughout the day. Out of five children, my mother seemed to have only played classical music around me and in a sense, I feel that that experience grew with me. Of course, it 's not a direct reasoning, but till this day, being the only child interested in instruments, I feel that the constant playing of this genre of music influenced my view on instruments. The first appearance, musical instruments made in my life was during the third grade while my middle school music instructor visited each class demonstrating and introducing the different abilities that ... I have never personally been to the Musical Arts Center, but from the online streamed video, the place looks magnificently huge and phenomenal. The stage was absolutely stunning. It was big, vibrant, and breathtaking. It made it look as if you actually went back in time and were a part of the performance. He was continuously on beat with the others and he made the rhythm sound so "jazz like," which is my most favorite type of music. I am not sure the music would sound as good as it did without them. The way they played so smooth, going along with the dancers was very calming, yet suspenseful. Without the cellos, I do not believe the musicians would be able to produce such a heart throbbing sound. The viola was a new sound to me. When I first heard the sound, I just assumed it was the violin. I know I have heard it played before, but I have never paid attention to it specifically. The fact that it does not have such a high pitch as the violin amazes me, because they look almost the same. I like that it has a wider range of sound and is not deep like a tuba or cello, and that is why I think I could not pin point a viola before. I am glad I know what one is now, because I can only imagine being a viola player, and not be noticed for such a gorgeous sound one can make. The timpani drum was a new instrument to me as well. I am not sure if I have ever heard a timpani drum played; if I have, I never knew the musical term for it. When Timothy Crockett banged the timpani, my heart could feel its deep base. How is the history of European and Arabic cultural contact reveal through musical characteristics in places such as Spain and Bulgaria? In Spain, the authentic flamenco had just a singer. It had a strained type of timbre and melisma was used a lot. It shows that there was Arabic influence because they also had that type of style. And because they also used a guitar as accompaniment, it showed there was European influence because they liked harmony. Bulgarian music also had harmonies but with voices. This was a European characteristic. Their music is very colorful and lively and I think that was Arabic influence. 2. What defines a music as "classical" as opposed to "folk" in the European context? How ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An easy to play folk instrument is the hurdy gurdy. In the text it even says it's "foolproof". To play it, you just have to turn a crank and press some keys. A folk instrument needing more advanced techniques is the uilleann. It's from Ireland and it is the more complex type of bagpipes in the world. It is complicating because it requires a lot of coordination. A player has to use both of his arms and hands at the same time. 5. How are music and musical instruments used to express national identity in Europe? I think the music and musical instruments expresses national identity in Europe because there are different styles of music according to where they are from in Europe. And different countries have different types of instruments. For example the bagpipes in Scotland. Many people recognize music with pipes to be from Scotland or Ireland. Spain has flamenco and Russia has their balalaika. They all express their nationality and where they are from. The countries in Europe have different types of musical styles that are distinct to their own country and culture. 6. Is language a reliable demarcation of musical style in Europe? Why or why not? I don't think language is a reliable separation of musical style in Europe because even if people from different countries speak the same languages, they might have different types of styles. For example, Ireland and Scotland are grouped together but their music is a bit different. They both play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This program was designed for students who have no experience with the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Although I already played the piano since age five, I thought learning the violin would be a fun experience. At the time I was unaware how committed I would be to the violin, my impulsive 8 year old self was simply intrigued with stringed instruments. 10 years later, I own my very own violin and continue to improve my music skills. Why I have continued to play through all these years sometimes baffles me; What are the benefits of playing a musical instrument? Everyone should learn how to play a musical instrument. Lutz Jancke, a psychologist at the University of Zurich, states: "Learning to play a musical instrument has definite benefits and can increase IQ by seven points, in both children and adults." Even when simply beginning to learn how to play an instrument, there is a significant difference in brain improvement. Jancke continues: "We found that even in people over the age of 65 after four or five months of playing a instrument for an hour a week there were strong changes in the brain." Findings from the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry show that learning a musical instrument reduces feelings of anxiety, expressing emotions, and gives better attention skills to children. • 43. Persuasive Essay On Music Education Music Education Despite the vast number of children who learn musical instruments, many people still do not fully understand all the benefits of music education. When budget cuts and low funding threaten course elimination, music is often one of the first to go. This should not be the case, however, because "learning to play an instrument can build self–esteem, increase various social and academic skills and can help them become a well–rounded person" (Montgomery). Music education is incredibly valuable, especially for children. The benefits that children can gain from learning music will make lasting impacts on them. Playing musical instruments has copious benefits on a child's intellect, and social skills, and personal growth. Learning music has incredible benefits on children's cognitive development and intelligence. Children gain many skills through music, and "a child learning about music has to tap into multiple skill sets, often simultaneously" (Brown). Learning music substantially helps children grow in other areas of learning. In a study by E. Glenn Schellenberg, six–year–olds were given voice and piano lessons and their IQ's were compared to six–year–olds without music lessons. At the end of the experiment, "...the children who were given music lessons over the school year tested on average three IQ points higher than the other groups" (Brown). When children are involved in music, they are increasing their intellectual capacity. The ability to play or sing music can help children in math, english, and and problem solving. There have been countless studies and research that show higher test scores and grades in musical students when compared to non–musical students. In fact, "a research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reported that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science" (Shankar Mahadevan Academy). Music is an artistic area of study, but clearly has a strong impact on important core subjects for students. Through understanding rhythm and scales, as well as beats per measure, children can learn about fractions and other math skills. Reading the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 51. Argumentative Essay On Music Education Music. It's different to everyone, even if everyone happened to be listening to the same thing. There are health and emotional benefits that come with playing an instrument. It's so important that every student gets a musical education because knowing an instrument is comparable to you exercising a muscle; music is exercising the brain! The auditory cortex is working hard to process the sound, while the nucleus accumbers, amygdala, and cerebellum are working hard to make you feel. Oh, and you know when you know your favorite part of the song is coming up? Well, that's when your prefrontal cortex is being activated and is getting anxious ("This is Your Brain on Music" by Knowing Neurons). Being involved in music helps students do better in other subjects. Our brain works harder when we play music, and it increases IQ and improves spatial–temporal skills, which is when students can see elements that should go together, which improves math skills (PBS Parents, "The Benefits of Music Education"). Music affects everyone, reading this might help you realize the beauty of music, learn how it affected me meticulously, and other things about music education. I have been playing the piano for about 3–4 years now, so it has affected my life a lot. First, I was questioning taking a musical instrument because I knew it would take a lot of persistence, time, and effort. On the other hand, I knew I would learn to play music that I loved. My parents and I came to a conclusion, and that was that I was going to take the piano at Minton's Academy of Music. I started off fine, but we didn't notice any improvement. So we switched teachers, and how I learned changed dramatically. I went from struggling to read simple notes from sightreading songs almost the moment I saw them. Why does this matter, and why should you believe you will see the same results I did? Well, by participating in a music class I've learned the skill of perseverance. If I didn't get a song, I would practice over and over again for weeks and months; I learned it is definitely worth the immense effort. It has had an influence over other subjects and activities I participate in too, such as math, science, and even swimming! Music has taught me to be patient, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout this past semester, Professor B drew materials from West, East and South Africa to demonstrate the powerful ability of music to bring and bind people together. Consistently exemplified throughout African history, music has served as the unifying link between generations. • 57. Development of Musical Instruments Throughout history, music has been influenced by the different events that transpire across the world. As civilizations rise and fall, cultures combine and change; and with that, new music and musical instruments are brought into existence. From each corner of the world and from all time periods, music has grown. The places that music has dramatically developed the most are in China, Europe, and America. Musical instruments in these locations have gone through a musical "revolution" and have eventually become what we know so well today. China One of the earliest locations that musical instruments were created and developed was China. Many of the instruments during this period (500 – 1100 A.D.) that were being made were classified as zithers of idiophones. Zithers are very similar to guitars since both share the quality of having strings, but do not have a "neck." Idiophones are instruments where the body itself vibrates to create the sound much like modern day percussion instruments. These types of instruments were brought into being by the beliefs and teachings of people like Confucius, Mencius, and Laozi. These men "believed that music was an essential part of character and community" and helped the creation of new instruments (1). Many different styles of instruments came out of this time period. Instruments such as the Guqin, Xiao flute, Sanxian, and Pipa were all created and modified with the rise of a style of music– Nanguan. Nanguan was "a style of Chinese classical ... A study conducted on school children in America concluded that children who took voice or piano lessons had higher IQ's at the end of the year than those who did not (Munsey, 2006). Those who are truly open to music are the most affected by musical stimulation and are classified by their openness to experience. These individuals are classified by their creativity, kindness, curiosity, and an elevated interest in music. In order to classify a person to know if they will be open to chills involves the "Big 5" personality traits. Similarly between these cultures, music is symbolic of the most important and sacred concepts. The musical elements often exist to celebrate parts of the culture, to provide an element of sound to express spiritually, and to worship one or more Gods. Furthermore, music has occupied a central place in Hindu, Greek, and Judaic cultures, in which there are intrinsic musical principles, an arrangement of different instruments, and several forms and textures within all three cultures. Another theory about music was "logos" and "pathos". The Dionysian approach emphasized emotions, sensuality, desire, and function over form. Whereas, the Apollonian approach consisted of concepts such as reason, self–restraint, and form over function. The idea of Ethos was thought mean that "Good" music leads to ethical behavior and bad "music the opposite. Moreover, due to concept of ethos, several Jews believed logos music was to be used as worship music and that played music was simply not worthy of being played. Thus, there was an inherent difference in musical pieces and instruments played amongst both cultures, and Hindu culture as well. Indeed in Hindu culture, rhythm is a vital musical element. For example Shiva Nataraja, the Lord of dance is dancing because there is a rhythm to the samsara, the cycle of death and rebirth. In addition, there is a rhythmic system called the Tala that refers to recurring dynamic sequence that comes to an end by finishing on the first beat of the cycle. The Tala moves into a timeless rhythmic awareness of cyclical existence, the basic of all existence itself. Therefore the interrelationship between music, rhythm, and dance is essential in Hindu culture. Another form of music in Hindu culture is chanting, in which a text is taken and attached to a monophonic chant. Usually, the tambura, a 4–6 stringed instrument ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Relationship Between Playing Musical Instruments And... Over the years various researchers have raised concern about the relationship between playing musical instruments and performance in math. Performing well in math is a significant requirement in passing an examination. For this reason, extensive research has been conducted on some of how students can improve their performance in math. According to Cindy Zhan, playing music instruments engages the right hemisphere of the brain. On the other hand, tackling math problems involves the left hemisphere of the brain. Playing musical instruments thus creates a correlation between the two brain hemispheres and increases the brain thinking capacity. My prediction is that playing musical instruments greatly increases a student's performance in math. The main purpose of this investigation is to determine whether there is a relationship between playing musical instruments and increased performance in math. Data that will be collected include the math grades (American Grading System) of students playing musical instruments as well as for those who do not. The math scores will be used to determine how high students scored an overall grade in math and how good they are in playing musical instruments. The data which will be used will take the average score for 100 or more students both who play the instruments and those who do not. I will investigate the relationship between math scores and play various musical instruments. I will collect data on the math scores of students playing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
