Beethoven Symphony 9 Essay
The West–Eastern Divan Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain impressively
rendered Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the 2012 BBC Proms. The Orchestra
conducted by Daniel Barenboim played the four played all four movements of Symphony no. 9. The
performers brilliantly upgraded the symphony, fully respecting the brilliance of Beethoven. The
performance utilized a large Orchestra and Choir, all of which displayed various musical concepts.
Ultimately, this performance breathtaking performance, respectfully paid homage to one of the most
revered symphonies of all time. The First movement Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso
began with a very angry mood, recapitulating the fortissimo throughout the movement. The Second
movement Scherzo: Molto vivace – Presto played in the minor key displayed both a joyful and
suspenseful mood. The Third movement Adagio molto e cantabile played in the major mode

The first movement Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso played in sonata form beginning with
a soft pianissimo which then developed into a stormy fortissimo which recapitulated throughout the
movement. The second movement Scherzo: Molto vivace – Presto also features recapitulation
throughout the movement, while the movement's rapidity was facilitated by the presto tempo of the
movement. The third movement Adagio molto e cantabile played in variation form by repeating the
same basic melody, with minor alterations. The fourth and final movement called Presto; Allegro
molto assai (Alla marcia); Andante maestoso; Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato, represents the
most iconic movement of the symphony. This movement begins with a suspenseful presto then

Difference Between Classical Music And Classical Period
Introduction:
The classical period was called the age of enlightenment and had lasted since 1750 till 1820. It
contrasted the Renaissance and Baroque periods, because composers were able to express about
their emotions and problems within their artworks. The artwork that was created then was unique
and new. The classical period's music was mainly dominated by three composers: Franz Joseph
Haydn (1732–1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–
1827).
1. Symphony:
A. Definition:
A symphony is a musical piece which is divided into four movements played by an orchestra.
B. Overview and history:
In the beginning of 18th century, many orchestra performances were private events funded by
wealthy aristocrats, however, by the mid–eighteenth century, public concerts which were funded by
ticket sales became popular for middle–class audiences to watch. Such concerts contained many
singers, instrumental soloists, and other musical acts. Though, the big opener of a public concert was
usually a symphony. The symphony became one of the Classical period's most popular musical
genres. Nearly every Classical composer wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A symphony consists of four movements which each movement is made up of a different forms with
a wide range of melody, harmony, rhythm, and even dynamics. The first movement is usually an
opening sonata which is fast, the second is in a slow form of adagio, and the third is dance–related
or in a waltz meter, and at last the fourth one was and still is considered to be the lively finale sonata
which is in allegro form, an example is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. A symphony has a pause in
between each movement, which never has an applause, due to its strict audience etiquette. For
during the past, there used to be a symphony police in order to regulate and manage the

Pratt Carrol stated that "Music is the language of emotion, and emotions tend to be the same the

For my Introduction to music class I decided, to write about the Seventh Symphony in A major (Op.

piece of music, and it definitely catch my attention since the moment I heard it. I feel this symphony

Attending The UTEP Symphony Orchestra Concert
For my Cultural Event I had the opportunity to attend the UTEP symphony orchestra concert. This
concert took place at the fine arts center in UTEP. I choosed to attend this event for a variety of
different reasons. First of all, it was a fine arts event, and secondly, I love listening to classical music
that orchestras typically perform. I was in orchestra for a number of years during my elementary and
middle school education. Unfortunately, I stopped playing in High School in which I regret
drastically. I enjoy hearing all the instruments play different parts of the music piece and at the end
they all create a beautiful master piece.
I really liked how all the musicians in the orchestra each had their own personal style in playing
their instrument.

Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 94 Symphony
When listening to Classical music I think of rich, precise, high–quality, and pristine music that either
gives you relaxing feeling or gives you that want to dance feeling. One of my favorite composers of
this era was Franz Joseph Haydn and he incorporated both of these feelings in his arrangements.
Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Austria. He struggled early in life and worked as a
freelance musician. He began his career singing soprano at Saint Stephen's Cathedral and later
started "giving keyboard lessons, playing in street bands, and singing or playing violin and organ at
three different churches every Sunday" (Wright, C. M., 2014, p.159, para. 2). In 1779, Haydn signed
a contract with Prince Nikolas and for thirty years he wrote ... Show more content on

94 "Surprise" Symphony. The genre of this musical composition is a symphony and it consists of a
three movement minuet and trio. The piece has a stately dance feel to it with a very solid rhythm,
nice melody, and a rich full sound. It is written in ternary form and "the entire minuet–trio–minuet
forms an ABA arrangement" (Wright, C.M., 2014, p. 166). The divisions between sections of the
piece are well indicated and recognized by a change of theme, instrumentation, and volume. I really
liked the way the timpani helped accentuate the beat and help give the piece a driving tempo at
times. The woodwinds and strings also flowed well together as if telling a story. Some of the things
that stuck out to me and make this an enjoyable symphony were the rich full sound of the orchestra
instruments along with the bouncy rhythm and tempo. While listening to the arrangement I could
hardly sit still, the music just made me want to move with it. It gave me the mental image of a large
stately ballroom with numerous dancers dancing about. I also liked the way different sections of the
arrangement were easily recognized by a change in volume and

Question: To what extent did music from earlier period influence composers working after 1950?
Discuss at least two different examples from art music or popular music, or one from each.
Classical, Baroque, and Romantic Music Influence on Modern Genres
The Classical, Romantic and Baroque eras all influenced modern genres now a day. They are the
foundation of all music. There is no way that music has no single element of earlier music. It is sure
that modern music is the mixture of earlier music element and modern music element. For example

Form and style of Sergei Prokofiev symphony No. 1 in D major
The symphony has four movements 1.Allegro; 2.Larghetto ; 3.Gavotta: Non troppo allegro;
4.Finale: Molto vivace, but the piece only last around 15 minutes. The symphony was considered as
one of the first neoclassical compositions. Prokofiev was attempted to write in the style of Joseph
Haydn in this classical symphony. As we can see that the elements of the old and the new styles are
mixed together, and became a new piece with galant style , simple but elegance.
Haydn's style of Music in Prokofiev's Symphony
Prokofiev imitated Haydn style of music in his piece shows that the Baroque period is affecting the
music after 1950. The main characteristic of Haydn 's music is a large piece with short and simple
motifs, with standard accompanying figures. The music is often quite formally concentrated, and the
important musical events of a movement can be played more quicker than normal. Which is one of
the element from Prokofiev's Symphony No.1 in the 1st and last movement. Another common
compositional form that Haydn normally uses is Sonata from, which is also used in Prokofiev's

Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Influence On The Classical Era
Known as the most influential musician of all time, Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn,
Germany in 1770. Beethoven's talent was noticed at a young age and he soon became a pioneer in
the world of music for breaking the traditional bounds of style and form. Over the course of his life,
Beethoven produced nine symphonies, seven concertos, and a total of forty–two sonatas. Although
these numbers are few when compared to other composers such as Joseph Haydn, his work was very
substantial. Ludwig van Beethoven's compositions were greatly influenced by the changes in the
world around him. His ability to stray away from the practices that restrained other composers
inspired musicians around him and changed the practices of music forever. Beethoven lived during
both the Classical and Romantic era. He is widely considered a pivotal figure in the passage from
the Classical era to the Romantic. Composers of the Classical era mirrored the harmony and
centrality of the classical traditions of Greece and Rome (The Classical Period (1775–1825)). Music
of Classical era had very defined movements and focused on form and order (Katherine, Charlton,
2007, p. 124). People of the Romantic era were inspired by adventure, passion, and themes of
nature. Composers of this era were very passionate and expressed their emotions in their
compositions. While listening to Beethoven's music, the shift from the classical era to the romantic
can be clearly heard through passionate twists other instances

Symphony Number 45 in F# Minor (the "Farewell symphony")
Between 1761 and 1790 Haydn was employed by the enormously wealthy Esterhazy family who
had two palaces on the borders of Austria and Hungary. The court orchestra was similar to that of
many baroque orchestras – two oboes, a bassoon, a string ensemble and a harpsichord. But it also
included a pair of horns – instruments that became a regular part of the orchestra thereafter.

week. Haydn's symphony number 45 in F# minor was first performed in the summer prince

The last movement of the Farewell symphony contains both styles. The presto is stormy, but the
violent mood is restrained by its form. The major –mode serenity at the start of the Adagio is later
tinged with minor–mode sadness and one of the strangest endings in symphonic music.
Haydn's use of wind instruments is quite different from Bach's and shows how orchestration
changed during the 18th century. Where Bach uses wind instruments to provide melodic lines within
his contrapuntal textures, in this symphony Haydn uses them to add colour or weight to the string
parts. In fact a performance of the presto on strings alone would make perfect sense.
The oboes are used in two ways: they reinforce the violins in loud passages and provide sustained
notes that bind the texture (eg bars 20–24) or give a reedy edge to discords (eg start of bars 25,27
and 29). Although printed on a separate stave in some scores the bassoon simply doubles the
cello/bass part throughout the presto.
Natural horns, like natural trumpets, could play only a limited number of notes. But by requiring the
use of different crooks for the town horns Haydn is able to use a wider number of pitches that would
otherwise have been possible. The horns' most important job is to provide harmonic glue for
contrapuntal passages such as bars 20–24 of the finale, where the second horn doubles the first oboe
pedal

Symphony Orchestra Analysis
A symphony is an extended classical composition for an orchestra, found in Western Art Music. It
often consists of four separate and unique, sections known as movements which are, in some way
however, related to one another. The symphony as a genre began developing during the late 17th
century and continued to do so up until the late 18th century. This important genre of Western Art
Music is closely related to the development of the orchestra. It is therefore critical, in understanding
the symphony, to investigate the development of the orchestra.
In the stretch of a hundred years, the orchestra underwent considerable change in developing into
the standard symphony orchestra of the modern age. When it is first found in the late 1600s during

It was truly a breeding ground for musical excellence and innovation. This orchestra was by far the
largest of its kind in the area, and boasted many of the greatest virtuosi of the time. Upon Mozart's
first visit to Mannheim in 1763, the orchestra made a huge impression on him. Besides a large
orchestra, symphonies included various specific musical features and techniques, that had become
trademarks of the style developed in Manheim. One Manheim composer in particular had a large
impact on the orchestra and the symphony. His name is Jan Vaclav Antonin Stamic (1717 – 1757)
(Germanized to Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz). He started writing orchestral works to be
independent works in their own right. Orchestras no longer needed to accompany vocal genres to
attain any meaning. This paved the way for what was to become known as abstract music. Stamitz
wrote 58 symphonies in his lifetime, and numerous conciertos. He expanded the orchestra, with
woodwinds starting to play an essential role in the orchestral timbre. The orchestra was no longer
made up simply of a haphazard group of instruments, but was starting to take a fixed formal shape.
Along with his contributions to the expansion of the orchestra he also adopted the formal structure
of four movements for the symphony and started using a distinct development section in the first
movements, which became known as sonata form. The opening movement is fast, followed by a
slow second movement, the third movement would be a minuet and trio, and the fourth would end
the symphony on a final Presto or Prestissimo

Ludwig Van Beethoven And His Influence On Classical Music
Ludwig van Beethoven is a revered figure in the history of classical music in today's world. Born in
Bonn, Germany, he underwent strict guidance from his father who aspired to mold him into the next
generation "Mozart." Sailing through the tides of social, political and cultural revolution, Beethoven
became a renowned composer and rose in ranks in the history of classical music. Although
succumbed to deafness in his later years, Beethoven had left behind a phenomenon legacy which
took the stage of classical music. Moving on from the early 18th century, his works were venerated
by many composers and musicians, and till date, his name still tops the lists in the field of classical
composition. Not only expanding on his own classical style, Beethoven also highly influenced
subsequent generations of classical music, such as the juxtaposition of chords and the expansion of
orchestra size. Above all achievements, Beethoven had established such a classical music elitism
that he represents a firm benchmark for classical music. Composers and musicians idolized
Beethoven, so much that their humble veneration made him seemed unsurpassable. That veneration
had also transformed Beethoven into a "singularity" that is studied extensively and his works played
repeatedly, creating a stationary progression. Consequently, this veneration might stifle the future
generation by excluding them of their individuality. However, Beethoven might be at the "zenith"
but his works only paved one of

Beethoven 5th Symphony Essay
Symphony No.5 in C minor, ensembles work by German composer Ludwig Van Beethoven.
Generally perceived by the unfavorable four note opening theme frequently translated as the musical
appearance of "fate knocking at the door."
This hard–hitting piece included flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, timpani, and
groups of violins, piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombones. The rhythm of the 5th symphony was
very important. Beethoven created a tempo allegro con brio (fast with spirit). I think him doing this
worked well with this piece and made it that much more creative. As for the tone color, that's a hard
one. There is no overall tone color for the whole symphony. The harmony was mainly minor mode.
The notes were very present and it got easier to hear and notice the instruments once I listened to the
symphony a few times. I feel like Beethoven's motive was the basic four–note motive he introduced.

What's more, straight forward, then switches and goes into a milder, more quiet vibe. Just about

unmistakably and they all assumed a noteworthy part in this piece. Beethoven's utilization of these
instruments made conceivable a more extensive scope of shading, magnificence, splendor, and the

The tune was hot and enthusiastic and shown dialogue without using any words. The ensemble

are being sung by Celine Dion. I found listening to this tune a rewarding experience, and it turned
out to be a wonderful start to the jazz concert in that it was not unfamiliar to the crowd. "Waltz for

Shostakovich Essay
The symphony is a large and complex musical piece that has the potential to express a wide breadth
of experiences and emotions. While the symphony was developed intensely in the eighteenth
century in Vienna, the tradition of symphony has long since spread to other countries, providing the
composers of different nationalities the opportunity to introduce their own colors into the symphony.
Consequently, as different countries develop musical characteristics in the symphony to create their
own symphonic tradition, these symphonies can be seen as an expression of national identity.
Whether voluntarily or involuntarily, the circumstances surrounding the works and the composers'
intentions for their work have a profound impact on the relationship between a symphony and the
national identity it expresses. Some symphonic composers, limited by the rules set forth by the
government, were forced to compose symphonies that strongly expressed the identity of a nation. An
example of such a composer is Dmitri Shostakovich. A Russian composer in a time when the Soviet
Union controlled all aspects of life, as well as music, Shostakovich was once criticized for some of
his works for not adhering to the expectations of the government. Shostakovich's opera The Lady
Macbeth of Mtsensk District and his ballet The Limpid Stream were both denounced, which placed
great pressure on Shostakovich because such denunciation could lead to violent consequences
(Taruskin 22). As a result, his Fifth

5. What were the new developments in the classical orchestra? (1 point)
There were four groupings: Strings (1st violins, 2d violins, violas, cellos, double basses),
Woodwinds (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons), Brass (2 French horns, 2 trumpets), and
Percussion (2 timpani).
A Classical Orchestra has a larger number of musicians.
Classical composers exploited the individual tone colors of orchestral instruments. A classical piece
has greater variety–and more rapid changes–of tone color. A theme might begin in the full orchestra,
shift to the strings, and then continue in the woodwinds.
The strings were the most important; first violins had the melody, along with clarinet melodic solos,
while the lower strings accompanied. The brass filled out the harmony, but did not play the main
melody. Timpani were used for rhythmic bite and emphasis.

Symphony Number 5 Essay
In the closing scene of Act II of Swan Lake, Siegfried lifts Odette high into the air right when the
piano forte string hit is played; Odette is slowly lowered as the famous oboe solo beginning on an F
sharp gracefully drops down to a B. In Beethoven's Symphony Number 5, the entire symphony is
silent while the oboist has an improvised solo in a still concert hall. In the Symphony in C by Bizet,
the oboe solo is embellished with beautiful sixteenth note turns, which still manage to sound
graceful. These solos will forever be remembered in the history of music, whether or not people
know the musician or even the instrument playing said solo or not. The oboe's piercing yet beautiful
sound is caused by the double reed that is used instead of mouthpiece like other woodwind
instruments. A double reed is simply a piece of cane that is folded over, tied to a tube of cork called
a staple, trimmed, and shaved. This sounds like a simple process, but it actually stops many oboists
from pursuing music as they graduate high school and go into college. This is a very taxing and

In this essay, I will discuss two specific symphonies, Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5, which
are composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) was a German
composer that stood out as one of the most famous and influential composers, in both Classical era
and in the entire history of music. Beethoven was born in a family of talented musicians, both of his
father and grandfather. He composed nine symphonies, thirty–five piano sonatas, in which thirty–
two are numbered, ten violin sonatas, sixteen string quartets, an opera and two mass. From all of his
works, nine of his symphonies are greatly known by people, and each of them all masterpieces.
Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5 are the most famous symphonies, and these are what I'm
going to discuss. Both of the symphony have four movements. The first movement of both
symphonies is "Allegro con brio," which means very fast and lively. This only defines the tempo
and liveliness are similar in both opening of the symphonies. Also, like most first movements of all
Classical symphonies, the first movement is written in the structure of a sonata form. The form
typically consists of an exposition, development, recapitulation, and coda. Although they are alike,
there's still having ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Symphony No.5, the third movement is in ternary form. The movement opens soft and slow and
the liveliness has not awakened until the whole orchestra gradually goes into a full crescendo and
replays the four–note motive again. Contrary to Symphony No.5, the quick crescendo in strings then
followed by flutes almost instantly sprang the scherzo of Eroica into its liveliness. As one can easily
notice, almost everything is played in staccato for Eroica. In both of these symphonies, Beethoven
makes use of many crescendos and very commonly climaxed them off by the loud sounding of

Beethoven Symphony 3 Analysis
This concert report is about , Symphony No. 3 in E–flat major, Opus 55, also called, Eroica
composed by the German composer Ludwig Van Beethoven it was composed between 1802–1804
and is a classical symphony. This one is the number third symphony of Beethoven performer and is
so beautiful and emotional. This performance is about an hour long and the form contains four
movement.
The instruments that Symphony No. 3 contains are two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in B–flat,
two bassoons, three horns, two trumpets, timpani, and strings.
Form of movement:
1. Allegro con brio
2. Marcia funebre: Adagio assai in C minor
3. Scherzo: Allegro vivace
4. Finale: Allegro molto
Structural Analysis of the 1st. Movement of the Symphony No. 3 of Beethoven:
Structure: tripartite sonata form, with three sections:
– Exposition
– Development
– Recapitulation
In the Exhibition, the main theme (A) does not have a special melodic personality. Theme A is
formed by a simple triadic figure that undergoes variations throughout the movement. Until the final
coda does not return to the regular form of the beginning.
In the development we hear a new topic, which is very significant in that this section does not
usually show new thematic material. The theme is solved in the final coda and is presented in the
minor variant of the main key, in E flat minor. In this central section of the symphony, we appreciate
a complex tonal process that gives us a dramatic dimension of movement. The use of the

Mozart Family Concert
In late 2013, the Blue Ridge Orchestra was invited to be one of the featured ensembles in the
Asheville Symphony's Mozart festival – Asheville Amadeus. After discussions with ASO Executive
Director David Whitehill, it was decided in February of 2014 that the BRO would present a Family

challenge presented was to design a program that would appeal to both Mozart novices and Mozart
aficionados.

Tchaikovsky's Romeo And Juliet Fantasy Overture : Analysis
1. In which era of Western art music were most of the works on the program composed? If there was
an even balance between two or more eras, list them all.
Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture was the first piece of music performed by the
McGill Symphony Orchestra. The work premiered on the16th of March 1870, but was only finalized
10 years late on the 10th of September 1880 (Elliott). Tchaikovsky was a romantic composer and
wrote his Fantasy Overture as a symphonic poem in sonata form in the romantic era.
Romeo and Juliet was followed up by R. Murray Schafer concerto for Harp and Orchestra. Born in
1933, R. Murray Schafer is a Canadian composer, writer, music educator and environmentalist
(Centre de Musique Canadienne). His concerto for Harp and Orchestra was composed in 1987,
making it fall under contemporary western art music.
After a short intermission, the orchestra played Jean Sibelius's fifth Symphony in E–flat major. The
symphony originally was commissioned by the Finnish government during the Finnish civil war in
honor of Sibelius's 50th birthday. First performed in 1915, it was finalized in 1919. At this time,
Debussy and Ravel had already introduced impressionism to western art music and Stravinsky had
performed his infamous Rite of Spring ballet in Paris. Even though Sibelius's fifth was written after
most musicologist agree that the romantic period had ended, it is hard to categorize his work as
anything other than Late Romantic Nationalist music.

Analysis of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony
Introduction Felix Mendelssohn was one of the most famous composers during the 19th century.
Although in his music he did show some features of romanticism, he was strongly influenced by
traditional genres such as counterpoint etc. In this essay, the biography of the composer, background
of the genre and analysis of the piece will be investigated
Biographical Sketch of Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn was born in Hamburg in 1809. His father Abraham Mendelssohn was a banker, while
his mum Lea Mendelssohn was a highly educated artist and musician. Mendelssohn first had his
piano lesson from his mum, but soon he was sent to study with the best teachers at that time such as

This simply corresponds to Robert Schumann's saying: "Mendelssohn is the one who most clearly
sees through the contradictions (between the classical and romantic style) of the age and for the first
time reconciles them."
Musical Form of the Work The symphony consists of four movements. The first movement, Allegro
vivace, is in sonata form. In the first theme (Ex.1), many sequences were used to construct the
melody. And being inspired by Italian opera, Mendelssohn here tired to delay the closure of the
theme as much as possible. While the second theme, it shares the similar materials as the first theme.
In the development section, although a new theme appears, it consists of some materials of the first
theme. Then, all these three themes appear again in the recapitulation, creating a sense of unity.
Ex. 1 Opening theme of the first movement The second movement, Andante con moto, however has
two main different interpretations that it could be analyzed as song form or sonata form. The third
movement, Con moto moderato, was composed in form of minuet and trio. Finally, for the finale,
which consists of the Roman saltarello and the Neapolitan tarantella dance rhythm, contains
characteristics of both sonata and rondo form.
How does the piece fit into the orchestral literature of the 19th century? First and foremost, the piece
reflects the development of the clarinet that its role in the orchestra became more and

Beethoven's Seventh Symphony Analysis
Symphony No. 7 in A Major (Op. 92), completed in 1812, might have been one of Ludwig Van
Beethoven's most popular pieces. The seventh of Beethoven's nine symphonies, its premiere concert
(December 1813 in Vienna) was performed at a charity concert in order to benefit the soldiers who
had been wounded a few months prior in the battle of Hanau. It was performed three times in ten
weeks following its premiere. During the time of the symphony's premiere, Vienna was still
distressed due to being taken over by Napoleon in 1805 and 1809 and yearning for victory; the
audience at the premiere seemed to have loved the energy and beauty of the piece. The Seventh
Symphony had been dedicated to both Count Moritz von Fries and Russian Empress Elisabeth ...

The Seventh Symphony itself can and has been described in many words and fashions. It's
victorious, moving, energetic, powerful, and full of heart. The piece is known for its rhythmic
devices (such as dotted rhythm and repeated rhythmic figures) and the celebratory emotion to it, in
which makes listeners want to dance and burst into blissful joy. It involves four movements: 1. Poco
sostenuto – Vivace, 2. Allegretto, 3. Presto – Assai meno presto (trio), and 4. Finale, Allegro con
brio. The score includes two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, two
trumpets, two drums (in which are tuned to A and E, except in the scherzo where they are in F and
A), and basses. The first movement is in A major, with repeated modulations between C major and F
major. The second movement also includes modulations (originally in A minor with switches to A
major) and the third movement is in F major. The first movement of Symphony No. 7 is noted for its
long ascending scales as well as its applied dominants relative to its C major and F major
modulations. The Introduction begins with a short A chord from the full orchestra. After eight bars,
the piece has briefly entered the key of F major already and is now accompanied by scales of two
octaves which begin softly, similar to the way a person creeps up and down a staircase. These scales
repeat, gradually becoming louder and more extravagant. The third theme

Beethoven Symphony 9 Essay
According to Levy, David Benjamin, the premiere of Symphony No. 9 involved the largest orchestra
ever assembled by Beethoven. The classical orchestra was quite small and it was about 40 members.
But Beethoven's ninth requested up to 70 members. Its orchestra was unusually massive, and it was
extraordinary.
Based on the triple wind combination, Beethoven led another trend. He used larger orchestras that
give a sound, a heavier feel than Haydn or Mozart. It can be seen in the development of the German
Romantic Orchestra. In Wagner's overture, Tannhauser begins with 8 horns, and Mahler sought after
more instruments at a large scale to achieve a "total work of art". Thus, it can be seen that
Beethoven's expansion of the orchestra influenced the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During classic period, the scherzo was placed rather than the customary third as the second
movement. The third movement was mostly restful and prayerful adagio. However, Beethoven
organized Ninth's movement to appear dramatically as he used Scherzo as the second movement and
the slow one as the third movement.
Michael Broyles who is a professor of musicology at the Florida State University said that this
innovative aspect would be to demonstrate the finale.
For obvious reasons the Ninth Symphony has generally been viewed in terms of three symphonic
movements versus the vocal finale. Even Beethoven's own solution at integration suggests this, as
the first three movements are symbolically discarded in favor of the Ode to Joy. To demonstrate that
the finale is symphonic would of course narrow the gap between it and the other three movements
considerably.
His Ninth changed boundary of later symphony wholly. For example, Mendelssohn tried cantata
form which has solo vocals and chorus in the finale movement of his second symphony. Mahler was
even more audacious. In his symphony No.2 fourth movement, he used the song which an alto solo,
and even in four movement. Moreover, he extended the number of movements, symphony No.8

Mozart Brahms Research Paper
BRAHMS PERSONALITY:
Brahms was a lover of nature and would often take a walk in the woods around Vienna. To adults,
Brahms was often blunt and sarcastic, and he sometimes stay away from other people. Those people
who remained his friends were very loyal to him, however.
Starting in the 1860's, Brahms was financially quite successful when his music began to sell. He
wanted to live a modest life style, however, he was living in a three–room apartment with a
housekeeper. "He gave away much of his money to relatives, and also anonymously helped support
a number of young musicians." (BRAHMS COLLECTIVE)
Brahms was a perfectionist. This characteristic of being a perfectionist is reflected in the time it took
for Brahms to compose and finish his First Symphony. It is possible that the symphony was not the
first he composed. Brahms got rid of completed works that failed to meet his standard of excellence.
Another reason was that Schumann announced that Brahms was to become the next great composer
like Beethoven. "Indeed, his mastery of composition, especially of harmony ... Show more content

in his works: sonatas, symphonies, concertos, etc. Brahms was and is still regarded as the most
Classical of all the Romantic composers.
He also had influences from folk music. He wrote piano and voice works from 144 German folk
songs, and his lieder reflect folk theme. They also depict scenes of rural life. Brahms' Hungarian
dances were his compositions that brought him the most profit and most orchestrated versions of
those works remain today.

styles of Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky. Holst was shaped by his early life which translated into

reception of his work that led him to travel again. One thing came along that was going to pay off in
the end. Holst was introduced to astrology. This led him to write his famous piece "The Planets."
The planets depicted all of the planets with seven movements. The movements were called Mars, the

The financial state of the Utah Symphony before the merger was grim. It was understood by the

aggravated by the downturn of the economy and the event of 9/11. However, even before the

Many people view subsidies for performing arts such as the opera and symphony as support for the
snobbish upper end of the income distribution. Governmental and public standpoints regarding the
support of arts in the United States differ greatly from that of Canada and Europe, where
governments provide primary support for the arts. The main government support for symphony
orchestras and other performing arts here in the US emanates indirectly through tax expenditures.
In summary, the current financial strength of the Utah Symphony is the above average endowment
that it receives from various contributors. However, this current financial strength is not guaranteed
to endure. There is projected increase in revenue for FY 2001–2002 but at the same time, there is a
projected increase in expenses. A very obvious financial weakness is its expenses compounded by:
* High salaries set by collective agreement.
* Agreed upon wage increases that do not consider the financial status of the organization.

Modern Music And Its Impact On The Modern World
The history of music would not be complete without the musical "fine art" that was created for the
dominant minorities in Western Europe. Bergeron (1992) admits that it is quite a task to educate a
two–term survey of Western Art music since students have no extra time for getting accustomed to
the great musical masterpieces and their composers. It acquires the knowledge to distinguish which
set of values will assist in selecting the pieces from the canon that are worth being carried from one
generation to another. Many students and the academic sectors as whole tend to view the music of
the 20th century regarding the canonical nature (Marcia, 2009). It is worth mentioning that the
building of the musical canon of works is not tied to history. The article analyses the healthy aspects
of the western canon concepts and practices about the musical materials. The case study majors in
the construction of the canons and the readings from that of the current J. Kreidler and D. Helbich
musical works. Marcia (1993) states that the emergence of gender could not be compared to a
historical time nor can it be taken as a blueprint to be used for gathering data about a particular work
or person. Gender as a factor has a great impact on the various categories of musicology, and its
effect has continued to increase with time. Various researchers have begun conducting research on
the influence of gender and their contribution to the growth of the musical practices. According to

Gustav Mahler And His Fifth Symphony
Gustav Mahler and His 5th Symphony By the end of the 20th century, Gustav Mahler had
established himself as one of the most loved and frequently performed symphonists of the modern
era. Audiences enjoyed his work for the energy and emotion conveyed through each and every
performance of his symphonies. Due to his particularly rich and provocative writing style, Mahler
has become the influence of composers since his death and continues to remain at the forefront of
modern musical symphonic consideration. According to modern records, Mahler was born July 7,
1860 in a small village in Bohemia. However, some scholars suggest that he and his family actually
celebrated his birthday on the 1st of July each year (Stefan 9). He was of Jewish descent and the
second of his parents' fourteen children, although more than half of his siblings did not survive
infancy (Stefan 9). Mahler's Jewish heritage would later become a hindrance to his career due to
politics of his given region. Nevertheless, Mahler grew up under his father, who ran a local business,
and had a nurturing family life (Stefan 12). Like many other great composers of the past, Gustav
Mahler was a fantastic musician even as a child. He began his musical endeavors at the age of four
but discovered the piano later at age six. He was skilled to the point that he acquired a student of his
own before he turned eight. He made a flattering wage of one cent an hour during this period of his

Biography Of Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Symphonies
Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies are indispensable pieces of music and contributed to him
being referred to as one of the most famous musicians in all of musical history. His symphonies are
still played today and are recognized around the world. He is known as a symphonic master due to
his nine symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the transitional period
between the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven's symphonies were greatly influenced by
Haydn and Mozart in the beginning, but they showed remarkable signs of his individuality and
eventually transformed into his own style. His life is categorized into three periods; early period,
heroic period, and later period, in which his music had distinct characteristics in each of the time
periods. His symphonies were first composed in a very classical style that stemmed from his
mentors, to later develop into a more romantic style with his own personal touch to finally compose
the music that he wanted, without thinking about the music he thought he was supposed to compose.
The early period of Beethoven's life lasted approximately six years, from 1794 to 1800. This
period began directly after Beethoven met the famous composer Franz Joseph Hayden and moved to
Vienna to study with him for two years. Although the lessons with Hayden were not successful due
to a personality conflict, Haydn greatly influenced Beethoven's early period. This period of his life
encompassed smaller musical pieces

How Did Beethoven Change Music
Ludwig Van Beethoven, was the composer who changed music more than any other composer, the
sound of music and what the other composers that were to come after him thought. He wrote nine
symphonies, five piano concertos, an opera and many pieces of chamber music that jolted music
right out of itself. (Landon) Beethoven changed music by creating a new era called Romanticism,
influencing the other composers and changing the old methods by adding a special twist.
The first way that Beethoven changed music was by creating romanticism. Ludwig is viewed as the
most transitional figure between the eras of classical and romanticism of musical history. Even

He took the old methods and twisted to match his style of thinking. As mentioned before, Ludwig
used a D major melody and a B minor harmony all at once. (Discuss) He then called this juxtaposed
chords, which were opposing the old idea where they generally did not mix minor and major chords.
If he changed the way chords were played, then obviously he changed music. Ludwig also
influenced Romantic composers by changing the ideas of programmatic writing. (Discuss) He
changed the idea of writing music from composing just to compose into actually creating a picture
in the listeners mind. Beethoven's Symphony Number Six was the first programmatic symphony
where the music was meant to paint a picture, compared to simply being a series of sounds.
(Guthrie) The earlier works of his period brought the Classical forms to the highest expressive point,
expanded the formal, structural and harmonic terms of his teachers Mozart and Haydn. (Guthrie)
While he was influenced by his teachers, he took their old ways and transformed them into a new
version of thinking to help others actually express themselves through the power of music. He
changed the old methods into a new and improved version. He held onto the old culture without

America's Orchestras Are In Crisis Analysis
In the article "America's Orchestras are in Crisis", Kennicot underlines the fact that the American
orchestras have been undergoing a rough patch in the recent times. He uses the example of the
Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which in spite of the massive investment that was made its
creation, it has been accumulating debts and having a bleak future. This is also the case for
Nashville Symphony, which has been accumulating deficits to the tune of $10 to $20 million per

This statement is pointing at the increased disconnect between the likes and preferences of the youth
population or rather the younger entrepreneurs and the ideas that are increasingly propagated by the

funders are questioning the continued investment in orchestras, yet the musicians continue to build
their hopes on the efficiency of renewed fundraising efforts without considering the change or
dynamic nature of the feelings of younger generations regarding this type of music. In essence, the
orchestra musicians simply want to ignore their current need for gratification and instead pay
attention to ideas that are alien to them. This should point to what is already wrong with the
orchestra world of music. Of course, there are people who are attracted to it simply because it sets
them apart from the masses who would not feel at ease paying excessively for a type of music that
does not offer gratification to their immediate needs. However, a vast majority would only feel
comfortable paying for music that appeals to their souls. Essentially, it should be clear that the

Development Of Symphonies And Their Composers
Development of Symphonies and Their Composers Early eighteenth century the term "symphony"
was applied to the instrumental preludes and postludes of vocal pieces such as arias and songs. By
derivation the word means simply "a music ensemble". Today, we apply the term to a much larger
composition such as an orchestra (typically in three or four movements). The symphony can also be
defined as a sonata for orchestra. Symphonies of the earlier era, the classical era, were mostly
simpler, and followed a smaller scale. Later, during the romantic era, the symphony had grown in
number and length of the movements, the instruments used to increase not only in quantity but in
quality. There was also a wider dynamic range due to the variety in instruments played. Of the
seventeenth century, the term symphony originated from the word "Sinfonia", which was used for
introductory movements for operas, oratorios and cantatas. Today, the symphony is generally
regarded as the highest type of instrumental music. Beginning in the eighteenth century, the first
symphonies were intensely developed. Music had three parts: fast, slow, fast, and eventually became
dance–like fast. This form became popular in Italy, but then spread to Germany and England. That's
why most music terms are written in Italian. The first movement of the Sinfonia received little to no
attention, it merely served as a cover to the entrance of the people arriving late. The second
movement gave contrast with lyrical melody,

Antonin Leopold Dvorak: A Fair For Music
Antonin Leopold Dvorak was born here on 8 September 1841 to Anna and Frantisek Dvorak, as the
first of nine children. The family ran a business in house number 12, a cottage that had an inn on the

New World Symphony, was composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1893 while he was the director of the

The first movement Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso played in sonata form beginning with a soft pianissimo which then developed into a stormy fortissimo which recapitulated throughout the movement. The second movement Scherzo: Molto vivace – Presto also features recapitulation throughout the movement, while the movement's rapidity was facilitated by the presto tempo of the movement. The third movement Adagio molto e cantabile played in variation form by repeating the same basic melody, with minor alterations. The fourth and final movement called Presto; Allegro molto assai (Alla marcia); Andante maestoso; Allegro energico, sempre ben marcato, represents the most iconic movement of the symphony. This movement begins with a suspenseful presto then developing to reveal the iconic melody of the symphony. • 5. Difference Between Classical Music And Classical Period Introduction: The classical period was called the age of enlightenment and had lasted since 1750 till 1820. It contrasted the Renaissance and Baroque periods, because composers were able to express about their emotions and problems within their artworks. The artwork that was created then was unique and new. The classical period's music was mainly dominated by three composers: Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), and Ludwig van Beethoven (1770– 1827). 1. Symphony: A. Definition: A symphony is a musical piece which is divided into four movements played by an orchestra. B. Overview and history: In the beginning of 18th century, many orchestra performances were private events funded by wealthy aristocrats, however, by the mid–eighteenth century, public concerts which were funded by ticket sales became popular for middle–class audiences to watch. Such concerts contained many singers, instrumental soloists, and other musical acts. Though, the big opener of a public concert was usually a symphony. The symphony became one of the Classical period's most popular musical genres. Nearly every Classical composer wanted to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A symphony consists of four movements which each movement is made up of a different forms with a wide range of melody, harmony, rhythm, and even dynamics. The first movement is usually an opening sonata which is fast, the second is in a slow form of adagio, and the third is dance–related or in a waltz meter, and at last the fourth one was and still is considered to be the lively finale sonata which is in allegro form, an example is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. A symphony has a pause in between each movement, which never has an applause, due to its strict audience etiquette. • 9. Beethoven Seventh Symphony Analysis Pratt Carrol stated that "Music is the language of emotion, and emotions tend to be the same the world over, in spite of differences in social customs and language." In other words, music is a fabulous expression of the human being no matter the culture or norms because it manages to immediately transmit different feelings and emotions that other forms of art may not transmit. For my Introduction to music class I decided, to write about the Seventh Symphony in A major (Op. 92) by Ludwig van Beethoven. The reason why I choose this symphony is because it's an emotional piece of music, and it definitely catch my attention since the moment I heard it. I feel this symphony reach emotional situations that are above human explosions. Emotional areas that invade us through a contradictory fact between feelings. The Seventh Symphony in A major by Beethoven appears in 1813. The orchestra contains two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets in A, two bassoons, two horns in A (E and D in the inner movements), two trumpets in D, timpani, and strings. Beethoven insisted on directing it at its premiere, with tragicomic results. The critics recognized a new genius of Beethoven; even today there are experts who consider it as the best of their symphonies. Richard Wagner, another fervent Beethovenian, describe this symphony as "all tumult, all yearning and storming of heart" into "the blissful insolence of joy, which snatches us away with bacchanalian might." For its relentless dance rhythm and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Attending The UTEP Symphony Orchestra Concert For my Cultural Event I had the opportunity to attend the UTEP symphony orchestra concert. This concert took place at the fine arts center in UTEP. I choosed to attend this event for a variety of different reasons. First of all, it was a fine arts event, and secondly, I love listening to classical music that orchestras typically perform. I was in orchestra for a number of years during my elementary and middle school education. Unfortunately, I stopped playing in High School in which I regret drastically. I enjoy hearing all the instruments play different parts of the music piece and at the end they all create a beautiful master piece. I really liked how all the musicians in the orchestra each had their own personal style in playing their instrument. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 94 Symphony When listening to Classical music I think of rich, precise, high–quality, and pristine music that either gives you relaxing feeling or gives you that want to dance feeling. One of my favorite composers of this era was Franz Joseph Haydn and he incorporated both of these feelings in his arrangements. Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in Austria. He struggled early in life and worked as a freelance musician. He began his career singing soprano at Saint Stephen's Cathedral and later started "giving keyboard lessons, playing in street bands, and singing or playing violin and organ at three different churches every Sunday" (Wright, C. M., 2014, p.159, para. 2). In 1779, Haydn signed a contract with Prince Nikolas and for thirty years he wrote ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 94 "Surprise" Symphony. The genre of this musical composition is a symphony and it consists of a three movement minuet and trio. The piece has a stately dance feel to it with a very solid rhythm, nice melody, and a rich full sound. It is written in ternary form and "the entire minuet–trio–minuet forms an ABA arrangement" (Wright, C.M., 2014, p. 166). The divisions between sections of the piece are well indicated and recognized by a change of theme, instrumentation, and volume. I really liked the way the timpani helped accentuate the beat and help give the piece a driving tempo at times. The woodwinds and strings also flowed well together as if telling a story. Some of the things that stuck out to me and make this an enjoyable symphony were the rich full sound of the orchestra instruments along with the bouncy rhythm and tempo. While listening to the arrangement I could hardly sit still, the music just made me want to move with it. It gave me the mental image of a large stately ballroom with numerous dancers dancing about. I also liked the way different sections of the arrangement were easily recognized by a change in volume and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discuss at least two different examples from art music or popular music, or one from each. It is intentionally imitating the style of Haydn. It is also known as the Classical Symphony which was written in 20th century. It first public performance on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by Prokofiev himself. Form and style of Sergei Prokofiev symphony No. 1 in D major The symphony has four movements 1.Allegro; 2.Larghetto ; 3.Gavotta: Non troppo allegro; 4.Finale: Molto vivace, but the piece only last around 15 minutes. The symphony was considered as one of the first neoclassical compositions. Prokofiev was attempted to write in the style of Joseph Haydn in this classical symphony. As we can see that the elements of the old and the new styles are mixed together, and became a new piece with galant style , simple but elegance. Haydn's style of Music in Prokofiev's Symphony Prokofiev imitated Haydn style of music in his piece shows that the Baroque period is affecting the music after 1950. The main characteristic of Haydn 's music is a large piece with short and simple motifs, with standard accompanying figures. The music is often quite formally concentrated, and the important musical events of a movement can be played more quicker than normal. • 25. Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Influence On The Classical Era Known as the most influential musician of all time, Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in 1770. Beethoven's talent was noticed at a young age and he soon became a pioneer in the world of music for breaking the traditional bounds of style and form. Over the course of his life, Beethoven produced nine symphonies, seven concertos, and a total of forty–two sonatas. Although these numbers are few when compared to other composers such as Joseph Haydn, his work was very substantial. Ludwig van Beethoven's compositions were greatly influenced by the changes in the world around him. His ability to stray away from the practices that restrained other composers inspired musicians around him and changed the practices of music forever. Beethoven lived during both the Classical and Romantic era. He is widely considered a pivotal figure in the passage from the Classical era to the Romantic. Composers of the Classical era mirrored the harmony and centrality of the classical traditions of Greece and Rome (The Classical Period (1775–1825)). Music of Classical era had very defined movements and focused on form and order (Katherine, Charlton, 2007, p. 124). People of the Romantic era were inspired by adventure, passion, and themes of nature. Composers of this era were very passionate and expressed their emotions in their compositions. While listening to Beethoven's music, the shift from the classical era to the romantic can be clearly heard through passionate twists other instances ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Symphony Number 45 in F# Minor (the "Farewell symphony")... Symphony Number 45 in F# Minor (the "Farewell symphony") Between 1761 and 1790 Haydn was employed by the enormously wealthy Esterhazy family who had two palaces on the borders of Austria and Hungary. The court orchestra was similar to that of many baroque orchestras – two oboes, a bassoon, a string ensemble and a harpsichord. But it also included a pair of horns – instruments that became a regular part of the orchestra thereafter. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– It was this orchestra that accompanied operas in the palace theatre and played symphonies twice a week. Haydn's symphony number 45 in F# minor was first performed in the summer prince Nikolaus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last movement of the Farewell symphony contains both styles. The presto is stormy, but the violent mood is restrained by its form. The major –mode serenity at the start of the Adagio is later tinged with minor–mode sadness and one of the strangest endings in symphonic music. Haydn's use of wind instruments is quite different from Bach's and shows how orchestration changed during the 18th century. Where Bach uses wind instruments to provide melodic lines within his contrapuntal textures, in this symphony Haydn uses them to add colour or weight to the string parts. In fact a performance of the presto on strings alone would make perfect sense. The oboes are used in two ways: they reinforce the violins in loud passages and provide sustained notes that bind the texture (eg bars 20–24) or give a reedy edge to discords (eg start of bars 25,27 and 29). Although printed on a separate stave in some scores the bassoon simply doubles the cello/bass part throughout the presto. Natural horns, like natural trumpets, could play only a limited number of notes. But by requiring the use of different crooks for the town horns Haydn is able to use a wider number of pitches that would otherwise have been possible. The horns' most important job is to provide harmonic glue for contrapuntal passages such as bars 20–24 of the finale, where the second horn doubles the first oboe pedal ... • 33. Symphony Orchestra Analysis A symphony is an extended classical composition for an orchestra, found in Western Art Music. It often consists of four separate and unique, sections known as movements which are, in some way however, related to one another. The symphony as a genre began developing during the late 17th century and continued to do so up until the late 18th century. This important genre of Western Art Music is closely related to the development of the orchestra. It is therefore critical, in understanding the symphony, to investigate the development of the orchestra. In the stretch of a hundred years, the orchestra underwent considerable change in developing into the standard symphony orchestra of the modern age. When it is first found in the late 1600s during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was truly a breeding ground for musical excellence and innovation. This orchestra was by far the largest of its kind in the area, and boasted many of the greatest virtuosi of the time. Upon Mozart's first visit to Mannheim in 1763, the orchestra made a huge impression on him. Besides a large orchestra, symphonies included various specific musical features and techniques, that had become trademarks of the style developed in Manheim. One Manheim composer in particular had a large impact on the orchestra and the symphony. His name is Jan Vaclav Antonin Stamic (1717 – 1757) (Germanized to Johann Wenzel Anton Stamitz). He started writing orchestral works to be independent works in their own right. Orchestras no longer needed to accompany vocal genres to attain any meaning. This paved the way for what was to become known as abstract music. Stamitz wrote 58 symphonies in his lifetime, and numerous conciertos. He expanded the orchestra, with woodwinds starting to play an essential role in the orchestral timbre. The orchestra was no longer made up simply of a haphazard group of instruments, but was starting to take a fixed formal shape. Along with his contributions to the expansion of the orchestra he also adopted the formal structure of four movements for the symphony and started using a distinct development section in the first movements, which became known as sonata form. The opening movement is fast, followed by a slow second movement, the third movement would be a minuet and trio, and the fourth would end the symphony on a final Presto or Prestissimo ... • 37. Ludwig Van Beethoven And His Influence On Classical Music Ludwig van Beethoven is a revered figure in the history of classical music in today's world. Born in Bonn, Germany, he underwent strict guidance from his father who aspired to mold him into the next generation "Mozart." Sailing through the tides of social, political and cultural revolution, Beethoven became a renowned composer and rose in ranks in the history of classical music. Although succumbed to deafness in his later years, Beethoven had left behind a phenomenon legacy which took the stage of classical music. Moving on from the early 18th century, his works were venerated by many composers and musicians, and till date, his name still tops the lists in the field of classical composition. Not only expanding on his own classical style, Beethoven also highly influenced subsequent generations of classical music, such as the juxtaposition of chords and the expansion of orchestra size. Above all achievements, Beethoven had established such a classical music elitism that he represents a firm benchmark for classical music. Composers and musicians idolized Beethoven, so much that their humble veneration made him seemed unsurpassable. That veneration had also transformed Beethoven into a "singularity" that is studied extensively and his works played repeatedly, creating a stationary progression. Consequently, this veneration might stifle the future generation by excluding them of their individuality. However, Beethoven might be at the "zenith" but his works only paved one of ... • 41. Beethoven 5th Symphony Essay Symphony No.5 in C minor, ensembles work by German composer Ludwig Van Beethoven. Generally perceived by the unfavorable four note opening theme frequently translated as the musical appearance of "fate knocking at the door." This hard–hitting piece included flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, trumpets, timpani, and groups of violins, piccolo, contrabassoon, and trombones. The rhythm of the 5th symphony was very important. Beethoven created a tempo allegro con brio (fast with spirit). I think him doing this worked well with this piece and made it that much more creative. As for the tone color, that's a hard one. There is no overall tone color for the whole symphony. The harmony was mainly minor mode. The notes were very present and it got easier to hear and notice the instruments once I listened to the symphony a few times. I feel like Beethoven's motive was the basic four–note motive he introduced. Seems like he really took his time with this piece. He created the 5th symphony ... I could hear verging on each instrument unmistakably and they all assumed a noteworthy part in this piece. Beethoven's utilization of these instruments made conceivable a more extensive scope of shading, magnificence, splendor, and the bigger the standard ensemble is one of the elements that makes this last development my most loved bit of Beethoven's music. • 61. Shostakovich Essay The symphony is a large and complex musical piece that has the potential to express a wide breadth of experiences and emotions. While the symphony was developed intensely in the eighteenth century in Vienna, the tradition of symphony has long since spread to other countries, providing the composers of different nationalities the opportunity to introduce their own colors into the symphony. Consequently, as different countries develop musical characteristics in the symphony to create their own symphonic tradition, these symphonies can be seen as an expression of national identity. Whether voluntarily or involuntarily, the circumstances surrounding the works and the composers' intentions for their work have a profound impact on the relationship between a symphony and the national identity it expresses. Some symphonic composers, limited by the rules set forth by the government, were forced to compose symphonies that strongly expressed the identity of a nation. An example of such a composer is Dmitri Shostakovich. A Russian composer in a time when the Soviet Union controlled all aspects of life, as well as music, Shostakovich was once criticized for some of his works for not adhering to the expectations of the government. Shostakovich's opera The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District and his ballet The Limpid Stream were both denounced, which placed great pressure on Shostakovich because such denunciation could lead to violent consequences (Taruskin 22). Beethoven Seventh Symphony Analysis att Carrol stated that "Music is the language of emotion, and emotions tend to be the same the world over, in spite of differences in social customs and language." In other words, music is a fabulous expression of the human being no matter the culture or norms because it manages to immediately transmit different feelings and emotions that other forms of art may not transmit. Emotional areas that invade us through a contradictory fact between feelings, towards a liberation unreachable earthly, especially in the second movement called Allegretto. The Seventh Symphony in A major appears in 1813. Symphony Number 5 Essay In the closing scene of Act II of Swan Lake, Siegfried lifts Odette high into the air right when the piano forte string hit is played; Odette is slowly lowered as the famous oboe solo beginning on an F sharp gracefully drops down to a B. In Beethoven's Symphony Number 5, the entire symphony is silent while the oboist has an improvised solo in a still concert hall. In the Symphony in C by Bizet, the oboe solo is embellished with beautiful sixteenth note turns, which still manage to sound graceful. These solos will forever be remembered in the history of music, whether or not people know the musician or even the instrument playing said solo or not. The oboe's piercing yet beautiful sound is caused by the double reed that is used instead of mouthpiece like other woodwind instruments. A double reed is simply a piece of cane that is folded over, tied to a tube of cork called a staple, trimmed, and shaved. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) was a German composer that stood out as one of the most famous and influential composers, in both Classical era and in the entire history of music. Beethoven was born in a family of talented musicians, both of his father and grandfather. He composed nine symphonies, thirty–five piano sonatas, in which thirty– two are numbered, ten violin sonatas, sixteen string quartets, an opera and two mass. From all of his works, nine of his symphonies are greatly known by people, and each of them all masterpieces. Symphony No.3 and Symphony No.5 are the most famous symphonies, and these are what I'm going to discuss. Both of the symphony have four movements. The first movement of both symphonies is "Allegro con brio," which means very fast and lively. This only defines the tempo and liveliness are similar in both opening of the symphonies. Theme A is formed by a simple triadic figure that undergoes variations throughout the movement. Until the final coda does not return to the regular form of the beginning. In the development we hear a new topic, which is very significant in that this section does not usually show new thematic material. The theme is solved in the final coda and is presented in the minor variant of the main key, in E flat minor. If there was an even balance between two or more eras, list them all. Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture was the first piece of music performed by the McGill Symphony Orchestra. The work premiered on the16th of March 1870, but was only finalized 10 years late on the 10th of September 1880 (Elliott). • 106. Beethoven Symphony 9 Essay According to Levy, David Benjamin, the premiere of Symphony No. 9 involved the largest orchestra ever assembled by Beethoven. The classical orchestra was quite small and it was about 40 members. But Beethoven's ninth requested up to 70 members. Its orchestra was unusually massive, and it was extraordinary. Based on the triple wind combination, Beethoven led another trend. He used larger orchestras that give a sound, a heavier feel than Haydn or Mozart. It can be seen in the development of the German Romantic Orchestra. In Wagner's overture, Tannhauser begins with 8 horns, and Mahler sought after more instruments at a large scale to achieve a "total work of art". Thus, it can be seen that Beethoven's expansion of the orchestra influenced the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During classic period, the scherzo was placed rather than the customary third as the second movement. The third movement was mostly restful and prayerful adagio. However, Beethoven organized Ninth's movement to appear dramatically as he used Scherzo as the second movement and the slow one as the third movement. Michael Broyles who is a professor of musicology at the Florida State University said that this innovative aspect would be to demonstrate the finale. For obvious reasons the Ninth Symphony has generally been viewed in terms of three symphonic movements versus the vocal finale. Even Beethoven's own solution at integration suggests this, as the first three movements are symbolically discarded in favor of the Ode to Joy. To demonstrate that the finale is symphonic would of course narrow the gap between it and the other three movements considerably. His Ninth changed boundary of later symphony wholly. For example, Mendelssohn tried cantata form which has solo vocals and chorus in the finale movement of his second symphony. Mahler was even more audacious. In his symphony No.2 fourth movement, he used the song which an alto solo, and even in four movement. Moreover, he extended the number of movements, symphony No.8 does not have movement and it split into section one and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To adults, Brahms was often blunt and sarcastic, and he sometimes stay away from other people. Those people who remained his friends were very loyal to him, however. Starting in the 1860's, Brahms was financially quite successful when his music began to sell. He wanted to live a modest life style, however, he was living in a three–room apartment with a housekeeper. "He gave away much of his money to relatives, and also anonymously helped support a number of young musicians." (BRAHMS COLLECTIVE) Brahms was a perfectionist. This characteristic of being a perfectionist is reflected in the time it took for Brahms to compose and finish his First Symphony. It is possible that the symphony was not the first he composed. Brahms got rid of completed works that failed to meet his standard of excellence. Another reason was that Schumann announced that Brahms was to become the next great composer like Beethoven. It was understood by the symphony's chairman of the board, Scott Parker, that the situation was getting worse. This was aggravated by the downturn of the economy and the event of 9/11. However, even before the economic downturn and 9/11, the symphony was very close to a deficit situation (Delong & Ager, 2005). Scott Parker assumed the chairmanship to try to mitigate the situation. Governmental and public standpoints regarding the support of arts in the United States differ greatly from that of Canada and Europe, where governments provide primary support for the arts. The main government support for symphony orchestras and other performing arts here in the US emanates indirectly through tax expenditures. In summary, the current financial strength of the Utah Symphony is the above average endowment that it receives from various contributors. However, this current financial strength is not guaranteed to endure. There is projected increase in revenue for FY 2001–2002 but at the same time, there is a projected increase in expenses. A very obvious financial weakness is its expenses compounded by: * High salaries set by collective agreement. * Agreed upon wage increases that do not consider the financial status of the organization. • 122. Modern Music And Its Impact On The Modern World The history of music would not be complete without the musical "fine art" that was created for the dominant minorities in Western Europe. Bergeron (1992) admits that it is quite a task to educate a two–term survey of Western Art music since students have no extra time for getting accustomed to the great musical masterpieces and their composers. It acquires the knowledge to distinguish which set of values will assist in selecting the pieces from the canon that are worth being carried from one generation to another. Many students and the academic sectors as whole tend to view the music of the 20th century regarding the canonical nature (Marcia, 2009). It is worth mentioning that the building of the musical canon of works is not tied to history. The article analyses the healthy aspects of the western canon concepts and practices about the musical materials. The case study majors in the construction of the canons and the readings from that of the current J. Kreidler and D. Helbich musical works. Marcia (1993) states that the emergence of gender could not be compared to a historical time nor can it be taken as a blueprint to be used for gathering data about a particular work or person. Gender as a factor has a great impact on the various categories of musicology, and its effect has continued to increase with time. Various researchers have begun conducting research on the influence of gender and their contribution to the growth of the musical practices. According to Suzanne ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gustav Mahler And His Fifth Symphony Gustav Mahler and His 5th Symphony By the end of the 20th century, Gustav Mahler had established himself as one of the most loved and frequently performed symphonists of the modern era. Audiences enjoyed his work for the energy and emotion conveyed through each and every performance of his symphonies. Due to his particularly rich and provocative writing style, Mahler has become the influence of composers since his death and continues to remain at the forefront of modern musical symphonic consideration. According to modern records, Mahler was born July 7, 1860 in a small village in Bohemia. However, some scholars suggest that he and his family actually celebrated his birthday on the 1st of July each year (Stefan 9). He was of Jewish descent and the second of his parents' fourteen children, although more than half of his siblings did not survive infancy (Stefan 9). Mahler's Jewish heritage would later become a hindrance to his career due to politics of his given region. Nevertheless, Mahler grew up under his father, who ran a local business, and had a nurturing family life (Stefan 12). Like many other great composers of the past, Gustav Mahler was a fantastic musician even as a child. He began his musical endeavors at the age of four but discovered the piano later at age six. He was skilled to the point that he acquired a student of his own before he turned eight. He made a flattering wage of one cent an hour during this period of his "career" (Stefan 12). Biography Of Ludwig Van Beethoven 's Symphonies Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies are indispensable pieces of music and contributed to him being referred to as one of the most famous musicians in all of musical history. His symphonies are still played today and are recognized around the world. He is known as a symphonic master due to his nine symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer during the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras. Beethoven's symphonies were greatly influenced by Haydn and Mozart in the beginning, but they showed remarkable signs of his individuality and eventually transformed into his own style. His life is categorized into three periods; early period, heroic period, and later period, in which his music had distinct characteristics in each of the time periods. His symphonies were first composed in a very classical style that stemmed from his mentors, to later develop into a more romantic style with his own personal touch to finally compose the music that he wanted, without thinking about the music he thought he was supposed to compose. The early period of Beethoven's life lasted approximately six years, from 1794 to 1800. This period began directly after Beethoven met the famous composer Franz Joseph Hayden and moved to Vienna to study with him for two years. Although the lessons with Hayden were not successful due to a personality conflict, Haydn greatly influenced Beethoven's early period. This period of his life encompassed smaller musical pieces ... It is pointed out that this style is under the strong influence of Haydn and Mozart. The first crisis in 1802 is the spiritual crisis that wrote the will. Beethoven escaped this crisis by rediscovering the form of the Viennese classical school. How Did Beethoven Change Music Ludwig Van Beethoven, was the composer who changed music more than any other composer, the sound of music and what the other composers that were to come after him thought. He wrote nine symphonies, five piano concertos, an opera and many pieces of chamber music that jolted music right out of itself. (Landon) Beethoven changed music by creating a new era called Romanticism, influencing the other composers and changing the old methods by adding a special twist. The first way that Beethoven changed music was by creating romanticism. Ludwig is viewed as the most transitional figure between the eras of classical and romanticism of musical history. He took the old methods and twisted to match his style of thinking. As mentioned before, Ludwig used a D major melody and a B minor harmony all at once. (Discuss) He then called this juxtaposed chords, which were opposing the old idea where they generally did not mix minor and major chords. If he changed the way chords were played, then obviously he changed music. Ludwig also influenced Romantic composers by changing the ideas of programmatic writing. (Discuss) He changed the idea of writing music from composing just to compose into actually creating a picture in the listeners mind. Beethoven's Symphony Number Six was the first programmatic symphony where the music was meant to paint a picture, compared to simply being a series of sounds. (Guthrie) The earlier works of his period brought the Classical forms to the highest expressive point, expanded the formal, structural and harmonic terms of his teachers Mozart and Haydn. (Guthrie) While he was influenced by his teachers, he took their old ways and transformed them into a new version of thinking to help others actually express themselves through the power of music. America's Orchestras Are In Crisis Analysis In the article "America's Orchestras are in Crisis", Kennicot underlines the fact that the American orchestras have been undergoing a rough patch in the recent times. He uses the example of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which in spite of the massive investment that was made its creation, it has been accumulating debts and having a bleak future. This is also the case for Nashville Symphony, which has been accumulating deficits to the tune of $10 to $20 million per year. This shows an extremely bleak picture as far as the future of symphony orchestra is concerned. Indeed, similar sentiments are expressed by Jennie Dorris in "The Audition", where she gives the story of Tetreault, a Colorado–based percussionist who has put in 100–hour weeks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This statement is pointing at the increased disconnect between the likes and preferences of the youth population or rather the younger entrepreneurs and the ideas that are increasingly propagated by the orchestra players. It should be noted that a large number of individual donors and institutional funders are questioning the continued investment in orchestras, yet the musicians continue to build their hopes on the efficiency of renewed fundraising efforts without considering the change or dynamic nature of the feelings of younger generations regarding this type of music. In essence, the orchestra musicians simply want to ignore their current need for gratification and instead pay attention to ideas that are alien to them. This should point to what is already wrong with the orchestra world of music. Of course, there are people who are attracted to it simply because it sets them apart from the masses who would not feel at ease paying excessively for a type of music that does not offer gratification to their immediate needs. However, a vast majority would only feel comfortable paying for music that appeals to their souls. Essentially, it should be clear that the financial problems that are attributable to the ... • 150. Development Of Symphonies And Their Composers Development of Symphonies and Their Composers Early eighteenth century the term "symphony" was applied to the instrumental preludes and postludes of vocal pieces such as arias and songs. By derivation the word means simply "a music ensemble". Today, we apply the term to a much larger composition such as an orchestra (typically in three or four movements). The symphony can also be defined as a sonata for orchestra. Symphonies of the earlier era, the classical era, were mostly simpler, and followed a smaller scale. Later, during the romantic era, the symphony had grown in number and length of the movements, the instruments used to increase not only in quantity but in quality. There was also a wider dynamic range due to the variety in instruments played. Of the seventeenth century, the term symphony originated from the word "Sinfonia", which was used for introductory movements for operas, oratorios and cantatas. Today, the symphony is generally regarded as the highest type of instrumental music. Beginning in the eighteenth century, the first symphonies were intensely developed. Music had three parts: fast, slow, fast, and eventually became dance–like fast. This form became popular in Italy, but then spread to Germany and England. That's why most music terms are written in Italian. The first movement of the Sinfonia received little to no attention, it merely served as a cover to the entrance of the people arriving late. The second movement gave contrast with lyrical melody, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
