Essay On Social Play
Play
Play is important for school functioning as it enables Amelia to connect with peers at kindergarten
while learning social and communication skills (Rigby & Rodger, 2006). Direct observation of
Amelia's free play was conducted in the back garden and the Test of Playfulness (ToP; Bundy et al.,
2001) was adopted to examine her degree of playfulness. Amelia participated in different types of
game that predominate in the play of 0– to 7–year–olds (Takata, 1974), including riding bicycle
(sensorimotor), making phone calls (functional) and playing doctor (dramatic). Amelia showed
enjoyment during play especially in dramatic play like playing doctor, which she engaged in for the
sheer pleasure of it without any particular goal. However, the ... Show more content on

This play activity was selected because, as suggested previously, the experience of pretend play and
the social interaction involved were Amelia's main source of motivation. In the play transaction the
only relevant human environmental factor to consider is Lily. Lily's response to Amelia's verbal cues
supported the play. However, 3–year–old Lily did not contribute ideas to the play and therefore,
Amelia directed the play most of the time whereas in kindergarten, Amelia is expected to have
playmates of similar age that participate in play as equals with her. Furthermore, Amelia's play
would be supervised by her teachers at kindergarten, imposing boundaries that limit play activities.
Regarding the nonhuman environment, the objects seemed to support Amelia's play. The amount
and configuration of space in the garden was physically safe and supportive of play. In contrast,
Amelia engages in pretend play in an indoor playroom with multiple playmates at kindergarten. The
playroom may be clustered and result in limited space for Amelia to engage in exaggerated
behaviours in play. Nevertheless, it may provide access to a wider variety of toys and materials to
support pretend play.
Synthesis and Recommendations Amelia demonstrates competence in all developmental areas. She
presents age–appropriate gross and fine motor skills across motor tasks including writing, feeding,
drawing and throwing ball,

The Importance Of Physical Literacy
One of the main focuses of Physical Education for Generalist Teachers is learning about physical
literacy and implementing it into our future classroom and students. Physical literacy is the learning
and mastering of basic movements and sport skills that allow a child to analyze their environment
and make proper choices to allow them to move surely and controlled in a variety of physical
activity circumstances. This is a very important concept to implement into schools as up until
recently physical literacy has been underdeveloped in students; thus negatively impacting them in
various ways, such as low self–esteem and less community involvement. Luckily with the teaching
of fundamental movement skills (FMS) and the new curriculum the ... Show more content on

Five year olds also are very interested in what their body can do and are very curious about how
they can use it. Moreover, when looking at a five year old's affective development and
social/emotional development they are not interested in gender differences, they are sensitive and
individualistic, with a high importance of self–concept. Also at this age child accept defeat poorly,
prefer small group activity and seek personal attention. As well as they are sensitive to the feelings
of adults and like to please their teacher. In relation to a five year old's psychomotor domain for
development they are starting to become spatially aware, understand the names and locations of
body parts, also maintain balance while creating shapes with their bodies, walk backwards and walk
forwards heel–to–toe. They can proficiently hop and balance on alternate feet, run on their toes,
jump proficiently and will begin catching balls using their hands more than arms.
Likewise when looking at the development of a child in a higher grade, such as grade two or three at
the age of seven, their cognitive, affective, social/emotional and psychomotor development have
matured more in some domains than others compared to when they were at the age of five. In terms
of the cognitive domain, a seven year old child still often has a short attention span and is interested
in what the body can do, but is curious about the 'why' in

Bilingualism Benefits
The Benefits of Bilingualism
Nelson Mandela, as cited in U.S Department of Education (2010), once said, if you talk to a man in
a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to
his heart (para. 14). Linguistic diversity has become an important factor in society and more and
more people are growing up with the ability to speak more than one language. The Linguistic
Society of America (n.d) states that most of the world's population is bilingual or multilingual in the
world, where an estimated 5,000 distinct languages are being spoken, and only minorities of citizens
are monolingual (para. 1). Being bilingual means that a person is able to speak two languages
fluently, while multilingualism means that a person can speak two or more languages with high
proficiencies. In the United States and especially in the Washington Metropolitan area, a variety of
bilingual people from all different backgrounds and ethnicities live together in one community, so
hearing languages from all parts of the world is a phenomenon that can be witnessed on a daily
basis. Their abilities have a positive effect on the human brain while also impacting different aspects
of life, such as cognitive capabilities, business opportunities and social communication skills.
Speaking a second language enhances auditory attention, which is related to comprehending
multiple phonetic inputs at the same time. Research shows that auditory attention is more acute in

Topic Introduction
Everyday both adults and children play video games. Some people argue that video games have
many negative effects including poor eyesight and inattention. The TED talk by Daphne Bavelier
(2012) discusses some of the current research regarding the effect video games have on your brain.
Bavelier (2012) talks more specifically about the effects of action video games such as Call of Duty:
Black Ops and similarly formatted games on a person's vision and attention span. This paper will
explore both the TED talk by Bavelier (2012) and other relevant research on the subject.
Description
On average, 90% of school aged individuals and 70% of head of households with a median age of
33, play video games. General wisdom says that playing video games leads to poor eyesight and
greater attention deficits with higher rates of distractibility. Bavelier (2012) states that research does
not support general wisdom and even refutes it strongly under certain conditions. Bavelier's research
has shown that people who play action games such as Call of Duty, actually have better eyesight in
at least 2 conditions and are also able to switch attention much more swiftly and with fewer deficits

Sensory Response
The differences between male and female brains and how the work have been a very controversial
subject in the science world even in present time. In my project featuring the science of Neurology,
the study of the human brain; I will undergo an experiment to see whether male or female have a
faster sensory response time. Sensory response, or ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian
Response), is the response in the brain sorting gathered information of sensory such as touch, smell,
hearing, taste, and sight by relevant and irrelevant information. The response time is the speed
differences in the male and female brain in how it gather the information, sort it, and react to what is
given, (Google Search, N.D.). In easier term – My experiment will ... Show more content on

Past experiments such as one from the Colorado University which shows that men have an
advantage over women in response time by approximately 11 seconds average after undergoing a
stimulation at the school ("Sensory Reaction Rates Differing Between Men and Women," N.D.).
One disadvantage is that everyone have a different level of focus, intelligent, and how pressured
they feel when under a test. All these factors added in may caused the experiment for a precise
response time have a slight delay(Google Search, N.P.). The best way to approach this is by having
the test subjects at a close range of age (Which in this case is 12–14 years old) because the same age
group inhabits similar brains in thoughts, attention span, and intelligence level. Different genders
have their power points and flaws such as women are proven to be better to respond to pressure and
men are better when it comes to natural reflects. For example. when an object such as a ball is being
thrown at our way, how will we response with that information? The response differs in men and
women. Although male and female are different, what makes the "Stroop Effect" a difficult task for
both gender? When preforming a task such as the "Ignore That!" test, both hemispheres in our brain
are forced to work together; one trying to name the color, and the other

Change Blindness Essay
The distractions of driving are a popular area of research. Recent studies have looked at what
distracts drivers and what other failures of awareness may contribute to traffic accidents. The goal of
this paper is to look at research and explain how change blindness can possibly effect driving.
One failure of awareness that seems to have a connection with traffic accidents is change blindness.
Rensink (2002) proposed that change blindness occurs when a change within the scene goes
unnoticed, due to the inability or difficulty to detect it. Resink (2002) also explained that change
blindness can take place during a disruption in vision, such as an eye– movement or a blink.

Lees et al. (2007) asked the participants to verbally express what they saw in terms of landmarks
(e.g restaurants). While the participants explained the landmarks, the experimenter assessed all the
driving faults that occurred and tallied the number of correct landmarks that were acknowledged
(Lees et al., 2007). Without being biased towards elderly drivers, Lees et al. (2007) found a common
factor. It was not so much that older people could not detect change; it was the speed to which they
could react to it (Lees et al., 2007). It seemed as though elders are cognitively busy both assessing
the change and deciding what to in regards to it. Lees et al. (2007) acknowledged that people of all
ages are susceptible to traffic crashes and proposed that people be aware of the need of attention in
driving. Lees et al. (2007) also explained that when researching on different ages, specific stimuli
may be considered more attractive to one individual more so than the other. While Lees and
coworkers emphasized on elderly drivers Galpin and coworkers acknowledged drivers as a whole.
Galpin, Underwood and Crundal (2009) conducted a research that explained how quick disruptions
in ones visual field can affect the ability to detect changes. Galpal et al. (2009) described the
difference between looking at something and actually processing what is going on. The research was
produced by placing the participants in front of a screen and every time a change was detected,

The Attention Span Myth Summary
The Price of Attention
In Virginia Heffernan's essay "The Attention–Span Myth," she argues against the "ineffable quality"
(115) associated with the attention span. At first she provides both sides of the attention corruption
by technology debate, but then questions the definition of the attention span and its very existence.
According to Heffernan, the attention span is an inaccurate tool for measurement, as can be seen by
looking at the works of past authors who recognize the virtues of "distractibility" (114). While she
addresses the value of a short attention span, Heffernan fails to provide direct evidence in support of
her "phantom idea of an attention span" (115) theory. She gets lost in the world of "hyperactive"
(114) genius and never quite gets around to thoroughly backing up her concluding argument.
While Heffernan may believe that attention spans "have become the digital–age equivalent of souls"
(113), equating the barely–mentioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each time we write an essay or read a book we have to find a way to concentrate on one area for a
long period of time. Heffernan's fervent interest in the distraction–glorifying past is deceptive. She
presents the case of Moby–Dick and Ahab's "monomania" (114) as if it is pro–distraction, when
really it just recognizes the danger of obsession. Focus does not equal obsession. Even Tom
Sawyer's interest in beetles is a case for the opportunity for focus interest presents, not distraction.
The German Bertolt Brecht and his anti–boredom theater again simply stress the importance of
interest and constant contemplation. The attention span is not the enemy, but rather a resource for
great thinking. The inability to understand how to use it properly does not render it null and void as
Heffernan would have you believe. If anything, the attention span is imperative for getting the most
out of the human mind by understanding its limits. No attention span can last

Selective attention is focusing on a particular object for a particular amount of time. Once doing that
you are simultaneously ignoring irrelevant information that is occurring around you. (Chevette

the video. Whilst different objects were moving or appearing in background. There were three
different ages that participated in the experiment with 16 of them being 18, 11 being 17 and 1 being

participants watched the video they were all given a questionnaire to fill out. They were asked
multiple questions about their age and gender. They were then asked how many exclamation marks
they saw followed by if they saw any objects change while watching the video. And if so what
objects were they. They were also asked if they saw the clock moving backwards in the video. In
this experiment there were no ethical concerns that needed consideration.

Negative Effects Of Technology
If you walk around campus, almost every student is either looking down at their phone or has
headphones in listening to music on their smartphone. Sitting in class nearly every student pulls out
laptops to take notes on and complete homework. This exposure to technology is starting at an
extremely young age now a day. Children at the young age of two can unlock a smartphone or tablet
and play the game they desire. Everything we need to know is right at our fingertips thanks to
smartphones and tablets that have access to the internet at all times. The younger generation does
not know the world without technology, which is able to help them when stuck on a homework
problem or seeing what is trending on the internet. Technology has changed the way humans interact
with each other and changed the way we complete tasks, such as homework. There is no need to
look up terms in a dictionary, when a Quizlet has all the answers. While some people may argue that
the world has become better due to the technological advances, Technology is having a negative
outcome on children and adolescent's development with long term effects such as health illnesses
that is changing the way people interact with each other. A lot of parents today give their child a
tablet or smartphone to keep them occupied while the parent is completing tasks around the house,
running errands, or simply wants a break. What they do not know is that putting their child in front
of a screen at a young age and for long

Informative Essay About Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves...
Neil postman was a jack of all trades, he was an American Author, an educator at New York
University, media theorist, and cultural critic. (PressThink 1) In 1985 Neil Postman published a
book called Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourage in the Age of show Business. The book
provides a look at what happens when politics, journalism, education and even religion become
subject to the demands of entertainment. In his book Amusing Ourselves to Death Postman says that
the content of a culture is contained in its communication, and that the content of communication is
affected by the medium of communication. In other words, Postman is saying that a culture is
defined by its connection of people, and the connection of people is afflicted by technology. Sherry
Turkle is another author that has written a book called Alone Together published in January 2011.
Sherry Turkle is an award winning professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she
focuses her research on human technology interaction. Alone Together is the results of Turkle's
nearly fifteen year exploration of our lives with technology, she describes new unsettling
relationships between friends, family, parents and children, and new instabilities in how we
understand privacy and community. There is a third author named Julia Angwin that has developed a
book that connects with Postman's argument. Julia Angwin is an award winning investigative
journalist at a news organization called ProPublica. (About)

Change Blindness
Change blindness is the incapacity to detect changes to a visual scene. Over the past decade, many
researchers (Simons & Levin, 1997; Simons & Rensink, 2005) have studied and reviewed this
phenomena among several experiments. Notably, these studies have given contribution to
understand perception, attention, and awareness. In experiments of scene memory, subjects viewed
hundreds of photographs of natural scenes. Afterward, they were asked to identify which photograph
they had seen and which ones they had never viewed before. Even though subjects can recognize
previously viewed pictures very well, the memories were not linked to the precise visual form. In
addition, subjects failed to detect changes when the images were mirror–reversed. These ... Show

For that reason, the existence of movement transients across the retina might help to change
blindness. Transients also play a role drawing attention. Under those circumstances, mimicking the
eye movement without changing the fixation location can help to understand change blindness. The
flicker paradigm was designed to test this hypothesis. In the flicker paradigm, an original image, a
blank gray screen, and a modified image are presented respectively in a fast alternation, giving the
display a flickering appearance. The cycle of rotation repeats until subjects report the change. The
response latency is used as a measure of change blindness. The results showed that the change
detection during the first cycle of alternation was almost zero and did not increase too much after
one minute of alternation. Interestingly, when the blank gray screen was removed, the changes were
detected easily. Experiments using real world situations also demonstrated change blindness by
people. Surprisingly, the age of the participants reflected in how they noticed the changes. This was
depending on if the experimenters had almost their same age, especially to younger participants.

users seeing pictures of drug

services to people who either have no other means of support or who?s children are driven by the
greed aspects. Noticeable I was a bit sarcastic, but that is because I tried to find some humor in the
morbidity of some of these theories. As too the idea mentioned in one area where people with means

There are also inventions to meet the objectives to maximize the scratch pad efficiency and to
minimize the frequency and influence of pop–ups; they will be summarized below.
For the first invention, one must focus on the preparation, requiring little conscious attention, and
taking up little space on the "scratch pad". In the writers' perspective, the purpose of preparation is
to create "shortcuts" that will make resulting patterns of complex motor actions (like for example,
the fingering sequence) more or less automatic. While in the process, an approach can be marking
one's music at critical points, such as where accidentals appear and the location of key or tempo
changes; another would be using different colored sticky notes as cues for some aspects of playing.
The mentor must also be willing to help the student perhaps through bringing one to the
performance venue, letting each rehearse in the performance order, and requiring one to assume a
"ready position" every time he/she steps on the podium.
As for the second and third invention, one must increase his/her focal attention. To pay attention to
your music, not too much attention to pop–ups, is the attentional process to be cultivated; trying to
suppress or fight negative thoughts may be counterproductive; one must be selective about when
and what to recognize and respond. One can pay attention to his/her own breathing by

Research on the Logistics and Mechanisms of Attention
Attention is a mechanism directly involved in the selection, distribution and maintenance of
processing resources, which determines our ability to process complex and multiple stimuli from our
environment and is crucial to our success and survival. Given the large magnitude of visual
information we encounter every day, the existence of a selective mechanism –at a conscious and
unconscious level– that regulates what we pay attention to is indisputable; it has even been
conceptualized as a supramodal mechanism that distributes cognitive resources according to task
complexity and motivation (Salthouse , Rogan & Prill , 1984). Initially conceived as a single
spotlight alternating amongst foci (Tiffin, Knight & Jackson, 1946), attention is now understood to
be beneficial due to its capacity to divide. Nevertheless, there is a limit in scope and manner, so we
are constantly promoting the priority processing of certain information in the presence of multiple
stimuli (Rosselló, 1999). Understanding the logistical constrains behind this prioritization and
allocation of resources is thus important from a theoretical perspective (Vergauwe et al., 2010), but
also due to its practical implications in various fields such as the military, sports, transportation,
safety and education (Strayer & Johnston, 2001; Gingerich & Lineweaver, 2014).
Generally, these constrains have been studied in two specific domains: space and time. Regarding
space, visual search paradigms explore how stimulus

Spatial perception of visual sense on "How to drive a car"
1. Always start your car with your foot on the brake.
2. Put on your seatbelt.
3. Turn on the engine and release the parking brake, if necessary.
4. Learn how to back your car out.
5. When you 're ready to move your car forward, come to a complete stop and shift the car into
Drive.
Put your foot on the brake pedal, shift your car into Drive so that it can begin to move forward, and
then take your foot off the brake pedal. Slowly press down on the acceleration pedal with your foot
to get the car to move forward. Accelerate until you 've reached the speed limit, and then take your
foot off the acceleration, hovering it over the brake pedal in case you need to start breaking.
6. Hold both hands on the steering wheel at the "9 and 3" position.
Introduction
Perception is how an organism detects and interprets the external world. There are five senses –
smell, taste sound, touch and sight. Of the five senses, sight is highly complex and requires the
largest proportion of total brain power. The brain dedicates much of the cerebral cortex, directly and
indirectly, to support visual processing with senses like proprioception and memory (Al–chalabi,
Turner, & Delamont, 2006).
Spatial perception of the visual sense is crucial in making the distinction from stationary and
moving states while driving. It also aids with the sense of where you are on the road relative to

Technology And Technology : The Impact Of Technology
Have you ever been in a room with a bunch of people and when you look around you notice
everyone is on their phones? It seems that today technology has become something that we need,
something that we cannot live without. Everywhere you go you see people on phones, laptops,
ipods, tablets etc. Manufacturers are working hard to make sure technology is constantly adapting
and progressing. Manufacturers compete to make the latest devices, and customers demand the
newest and best version. In the news, on TV, or in magazines you can see that technology is
reaching new levels each and every day. On a daily basis, companies are advertising new and
upcoming technology whether it is a new update, a new app or even a newer device. I feel that in
this day and age, technology is causing an addiction that prevents people from being physically
social. Those affected by the addiction are zoned into that bright screen, and are not focussed on
family, friends or even their job.
If technology affects the way we relate to others, it definitely also affects our relationship with
ourselves. In a video called "In Praise of boredom," Maria Konnikova, a Russian–American writer,
speaks about a study that was performed by Timothy Wilson to see how humans would react after
having to sit in a room and surrender their personal belongings. For ten minutes, they sat in a room
with nothing but a chair. According to Konnikova people were miserable; they were saying that this

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Smart Phone
The world has evolved into an "Age of Information" where there are more comprehensive, complex
and accessible web of information that can be found in the world than ever has existed before.
Technology is emerging at an astounding rate and it is continuously developing new types of
entertainment and services that were unthinkable ten years ago. At this age, the process of human
interaction has evolved into a sophisticated one, particularly with the existence of current
communication tools such as instant text messages and video–calling which is deem as a common

The rapid advances of our time can be encapsulated through smartphones, a palm–sized device that
is integrated with vast amount of applications, has the remarkable potential of making its user
become smarter.
Smartphone users can access information on almost every topic imaginable. They just have to make
a few taps on the smartphone and boundless amount of information can be retrieved instantly within

The Sequence Of Development For Each Child Should Follow A...
The sequence of development for each child should follow a similar pattern. The 5 key areas of
development are: social, physical, intellectual, communication and language, and emotional. The
rate that general development should take place differs from child to child, but there are 9 age
ranges which certain stages of development should fall into, for a child that is developing healthily
and normally.
I will now detail each age range, and development sequence.
0 to 3 months:
Social Development
A child will cry to communicate
They respond to facial gestures from others, such as smiles, and can respond positively to attention
from others, unless upset or angry.
They only consider others as there to satisfy their own needs.
Physical Development
Sleeps often and grows quickly
Should begin trying to lift own head
Starts to kick legs and gradually move
Begins waving arms
Starts to hold appropriate objects if placed in their hands
Hand eye coordination develops and grasp reflex diminishes
Enjoys simple finger play
Become more alert when awake
Learns to roll
Can see at a distance of 25cm well, can begin to start watching further away objects
Needs opportunity to play to develop further
Intellectual Development
Recognises simple patterns, concentrates on known voices
Aware of different scents and smells
Puts objects in mouth to explore
Observes moving objects, responds to bright colour.
Recalls and stores information via images
Sees everything in an egocentric manner, in relation to

Time Management
Time management is defined as; the process of planning and applying conscious control over the
amount of time it takes to effectively and efficiently finish a particular objective. These skills are
consider to be a very important trait in many aspects of life, with good reason. Having poor time
management skills causes increased stress, effecting your mood leading to negative personal and
professional consequences. Improving time management skills will results in better quality work,
reduce stress, helping one increase the efficiency of their use of time.

However other motivators that are just important include, producing higher quality work,
eliminating the feelings of being rushed to complete an objective, and simply having more free time
with loved ones. My main goal of improving my time management skills requires me not only to
change the way I work on things, but changing my mentality on organization, multi–tasking, and
procrastination. Achieving this goal will help me avoid falling behind in school and work,
decreasing the necessity of late night working sessions, inevitably reducing the intense feelings of
overwhelming stress.
The information I found through online sources include the eBook "Superhuman Guide to Time
Management", by Ryan Cooper, and a few articles on time management, multi–tasking, and
procrastination located on varies websites. I chose these websites based on their source of
information pertaining to the subject. Cooper's book covers all three of the topics that involved in
my action plan which include; organization, multi–tasking and procrastination. First tip for
becoming organized is planning out a schedule, but in order to have a properly planned schedule,
one must understand what good schedule resembles. This includes allotting the proper amount time,
it must be sustainable, clearly defined, account for delays or unexpected events, and to set tasks to
complete a common goal. Now one must choose a medium to record the schedule in,

Stroop Test Research Paper
Discussion
Previously in the experiment, there were three possible alternative categories that were used for
performance on a visual search task for the participants. The three categories show a similar pattern
of enhanced detection of control, congruent, incongruent trials. Making a comparison of paired
samples t–test between control vs. congruent, control vs. incongruent, control vs congruent and
congruent vs incongruent. By showing great benefits and advantages for selective attention in
control vs. congruent, the participants demonste a greater facilitation to detect the correct block
color than control vs. incongruent and congruent vs. incongruent in a positive way. However, in the
color–word Stroop test, participants then obtained better results in control vs congruent than the
other categories. The result was supported for each alternative category creating evidence for the

Hence, Klopfer (1996) uses a special assignment to test the participants in other categories; these

Effects of Memory Consolidation and Episodic Context talks about the interference that language
has with the participants, affecting the results of each category of the experiment. However in their

participants, than the trial that had only shown the color block. In different ways and different

Age In Instinct Attention Analysis
The role of age in distinct attention mechanisms

The role of age in distinct attention mechanisms
Attention is known as a behavioral and cognitive process of selectively concentrating awareness on
a specific object, issue, or activity, while not focusing on other potential stimuli from the
environment. While the human brain has great capabilities for processing information, it also has
limited capacity. A person cannot attend to all the information being received through all the five
senses at one time. And this capacity is reduced as people get older. Older people tend to have
decreased brain activity in the the brain areas that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Standardized low–resolution brain electromagnetic tomography showed that the age–related decline
in preparatory activity was associated with reduced activation of medial and superior frontal gyrus
and anterior cingulate gyrus. The results suggest that age–related differences in these prefrontal
brain areas reflect declines in preparatory attention and gating of subsequent task–related speech
information, especially under conditions of divided attention. These findings may reflect
mechanisms relating to impaired speech perception by older people in "cocktail–party" listening
situations ( Getzman, Golob, Wascher 7). Older adults also preformed significantly worse than the
younger group when they first had to determine the speaker of the target stimulus, focus their
attention on this speaker, and then identify the target company value among the concurrent values.
This nicely reflects the everyday experiences of elders who often report that they can hear that
something has been spoken but cannot understand what has been

Attention is a fascinating and highly researched area in psychology. We use attention every day and
though it seems like something simple it is actually a complex process. Some of the most interesting
studies conducted were cases where people were not paying attention as one would assume.
Phenomena like Pseudoneglect, Hemispatial neglect, and Inattentional blindness incites
psychologists because they want to know why such cognitive deficits occur. These types of
phenomena all stems from attention. The ability to be completely normal, but make leftward errors
in line bisection because the left side of space tends to be favored; the ability to only attend to one
side of one's body and completely ignore the other; or the fact that we miss activities that occur right
in front us, all contribute to cognitive research that interest researchers. Studies about attention are
separated into two groups, spatial attention and temporal attention. Spatial attention simply means
attention in space and temporal attention measures attention over time. This study concentrates on
temporal attention and how it relates to learning.
In this study we wanted to measure whether or not implicit learning occurs with time in the RSVP
task. Implicit learning simply means unintentional or indirect learning. We also wanted to determine
if periodicity plays a role in the implicit learning of a timing pattern (Key, 2013). In order to

Imagination: A Human's Special Sense
Human beings have the ability to create their own individual worlds through imagination. However,
the imagination is limited because of the constant use of technology and the reliance on vision. The
technological culture has separated humans from the actual world and their senses; much like vision
has done. In the essay "The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses", Juhani Pallasmaa
focuses on the exploration of the senses and how they interact with one another. We also see his
discussion on how vision can affect the human experience. The more visually capable we are, the
more we begin to lose our sense of imagination. Similarly in the essay ... Show more content on

We see that our imagination comes into play when our vision is obscured. Without the sense of
vision, our other senses quickly assume richness and power. This occurs to blind people such as
Hull, who at the age of forty–eight became completely blind. Sacks states that Hull "speaks of how
the sound of the rain, never before accorded much attention, can now delineate a whole landscape
for him...it throws a coloured blanket over previously invisible things" (304). In other words, we see
that Sacks is showing us how strong Hull's imagination was after becoming blind. Just because Hull
became blind, it did not mean that Hull's life was over. On the other hand, it was a new beginning
for Hull. He was able to make use of his other senses and see how important they are. With Hull's
imagination also came a sense of intimacy with his surroundings. He felt as though with his strong
visual imagery, he had a strong sense of closeness, which evolves from imagining. The term
'delineate' has a significant meaning in Sack's text because imagination is what led Hull to be able to
portray the images precisely in his mind. Similarly, Pallasmaa states, "anyone who has half–woken
up to the sound of a train or an ambulance in a nocturnal city, and though his/her sleep experienced
the space of the city with its countless inhabitants scattered within its structures, knows the

Typography Of Media
These days, the media plays a big part in the culture of the world. The media is a powerful source
that we've been using for years and years since technology has been invented, starting with
newspapers and television. Throughout the years, media has changed since the transition from
newspapers to television broadcasting because of the changes of entertainment and what people are
into as time goes on. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman looks at how print culture
or "typography" has changed the media, how it evolved to television and what it's doing to our
culture and the way that people think. In the beginning of the book and all throughout, Postman

According to Postman, before images were used in our everyday media, Americans were more
logical and politically engaged because they were focused more on speech and had more rational
thoughts. He says that our speech patterns were different when we printed everything, we wrote
better and read better which is why we were better thinkers. I agree to his analysis and conclusions
about how television has changed our thinking. We've became a society that won't be persuaded
unless we're entertained or it has some kind of emotional appeal to it. Ever since televisions and
printed images came into existence, we get easily bored when something isn't captivating. This can
also be a bad thing for example, we believe things easily when it sounds good or shocking to us
without logically thinking about it. This causes us to have different perspectives thanks to how the
media portrays certain situations. I also agree with Postman when he talked about how people are
less engaged because of the media changes. One of the examples that Postman used was about the
Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas debate, it was a simple and short oral debate that lasted
for 2 hours and people sat through the whole thing without breaks. In this new media era, it's not
that easy for us to sit through long oral debates or lectures or we'll get bored because our attention
span is not that long. Since

Perceptual Processing Essay
The Special Role of Faces in Perceptual Processing Attention is often diverted by irrelevant
distractors despite the need to concentrate on a task, and this is prevalent in daily life (e.g. ads pop–
ups while working on the computer, signboards while driving). The perceptual load theory suggests
that attention is an automatic process with limited capacity – all stimuli will be processed within its
capacity limits (Lavie, 1995). In accordance with the theory, interference from irrelevant distractors
is dependent on the amount of perceptual load. Task–irrelevant stimuli would be unattended in high–
load conditions since information processing is at its full capacity, preventing further processing,
whereas in low–load conditions, spare capacity 'spills over' to process the irrelevant distractors
(Lavie & Cox, 1997). Several studies have supported the perceptual load theory and the capability
of irrelevant distractors to be processed automatically. In a visual search task, performance in which

Memory Vs Bilingual And Memory
Bilinguals and memory Language is an important way to communicate with people around us in the
world, but many people around us speak more than one language. Bilinguals are people who can
speak at least two languages. There are a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better
memory or bilinguals. Many research has shown similar results with the similar experiments. It is
true that monolinguals do know more words in a language but when it comes to memory, bilinguals
have better memory. Bilinguals do make grammar mistakes a lot, and mix up the languages to get
their point across but overall, they are better able to focus on what to remember.
Body
We always hear that knowing two languages is better than one, it will take you farther in future.
People who speak at least two languages are bilinguals. A study conducted by Blom et. al (2017)

monolinguals in memory experiment (Blom et. al, 2017, p. 1). According to Blom et. al (2017)
bilinguals pick up cues to know remember and answer correctly (p. 2). If a bilingual knows both

This study speaks about whether or not an alerting odor, such as peppermint, can affect attention and
working memory. Research has been completed previously on the influences of odorants on
cognitive functioning, physiology, behavior, and mood. From earlier research, it was resulted that a
person's atmosphere was affected in either a positive or negative way; depending on the type of
smell they inhaled. If a participant smelled an unpleasant smell, it was determined that the person
would have a negative change in their mood; when the participant would inhale a positive smell,
their mood would change positively.
The study consisted of fifty, female, undergraduate college students. The ethnicities that were use
for this study were African American, European, Asian, Hispanic, biracial, and a very slight
percentage was categorized as other. The experiment would begin at 5:00pm everyday, for four
weeks. One of the three groups was administered each day. The three groups were either
peppermint, expectation, or control. Each participant was seated down, given an instruction sheet, a

The Effects Of Digital Media On Child Development
Throughout the years, technology has impacted our daily lives. Specifically, digital media, which is
our smart phones, laptops, video games, and anything else that is computerized. We rely on digital
media through everyday tasks because it has proven to be beneficial in navigating and connecting us
with the world, however there is great debate whether our technology has any detrimental effect on
our cognitive development and skills. As we know, technology has become a great part of our
identity. Although, there is evidence that digital media has various benefits and risks for our
cognition. Nevertheless, it remains a topic of discussion since technology continues to thrive and
become part of our daily routine.
Chassiakos and colleagues (2016) discusses the costs and benefits of digital and social media use in
children and adolescents. There are various ways digital and social media may impact the child's
development. The authors explain that digital media may improve cognitive and social development
for young children depending on the amount of exposure, type of digital content, and active parental
guidance. Additionally, the authors explain how digital media advocates social engagement and
community that helps teenager's development and self–esteem. However, the authors provide plenty
of evidence that the use of digital and social media may be linked to the risk of obesity, cognitive
development, safety, mental health, behavioral risks, and sleep deprivation. For instance,

Johnstrude set three conditions: familiar target voice and novel masker voice, novel target and

Participants' correct responses will always be lower than the scores in the familiar–target condition
from Johnstrude's original study since it is harder to ignore a familiar masker voice than a novel

voice but cannot make participants totally overcome it. Meanwhile, the correct responses throughout
the task will be higher than the familiar–masker condition because it will take less effort to attend to
a familiar target voice than a novel target voice. Besides, older participants will score lower than
younger participants due to the weakening of perceptual abilities and more wrong voice errors
(failure to distinguish the two call signs). For old people in the experiment, familiarities of both the

Thus, new media is reproducing itself through different old technologies. Not only new media is
remediating its predecessors, it also shapes new modes of subjectivity. Subjectivity means the
process of being a subject; it refers to who we are to how we react to the world. The emergence of
new media has unprecedentedly change the subjectivity of different things. For example, we are
experiencing new forms of textual experiences and representations such as genre, form and
consumption. There are new forms of embodiment and identity that change how we perceive
ourselves and our bodies. Organization also changes the rules of ownership, control, regulation.
These subjectivities are all being reshaped due to the change of our relationship with technologies.
The example discussed in lecture is subjectivity related to selfies. Media technologies has created
selfies which are these self–portraits taken by phones that gets uploaded to social media. It is a

How Using Visual Stimulation Can Allow Children to Learn Without Being Bored
It all started back in the year of 2000 when I began to teach Sunday school. The children that I

time. Every week I would read them the Bible lesson for that week. I used the expression in my
voice to try to make the lesson interesting. Also, I had an assistant teacher who would do all types of
arts and craft projects with them. This begins to get boring to me week after week. I started to
thinking about how I can teach in a different way. Children in this age group have a short attention

Observation Of A Child Observation
Over the past few weeks I have observed a child in the twelve to eighteen month old category.
Throughout this paper I will refer to him as Z. I had five different observations, each for one hour at
the West Chester Area Day Care. I sat in classroom seven, in a little chair in the corner writing down
everything I observed about him. It was interesting to learn about Z as I watched him interact with
the adults and other kids that were in the room with him. Z caught my attention right away in the
classroom. He was very active, walking around while the other children were mainly sitting or only
crawling. This lead me to choose him to observe for this project, and focus on his physical
movement and interactions with others throughout this paper. Z was always moving around, the only
time he was ever sitting still was when he was placed in a height chair for snack time. He switched
between crawling and walking. Most of the time he would walk, but then he would fall down and
continue to wherever his destination was by crawling. I noticed one day he was holding a maraca
and walked for a longer period of time than usual. According to (page 183 infants children and
adolescents), it is easier for them to focus on their balance when they are holding onto an object. He
demonstrated the ability t squat down and picking something up, before returning to a standing
position. The adults encouraged his walking behaviors, so when the group came in from the outside
playground, they would let him walk in, while most of the other kids were being pushed in the giant
stroller. The average age for most kids to begin walking is 11 months and 3 weeks, the range being 9
to 17 months, so he his definitely on track for his age group (182). He was also able to climb up
onto things. For example, when the children were brought on walks around the neighborhood there
was a giant stroller that they rode in as mentioned earlier. Z got up the step and turned himself
around to sit down in the seat. He did the same thing on some of the steps on the playground,
crawling up one and turning himself around to sit. Walking up stairs with help is achieved on
average at 16 months, so he appears to be on the right track towards that motor skill. A baby's

can easily and definitely be measured. Children raised in a home care setting are obviously less
likely to catch illness such as colds and flu, chicken pox and other communicable diseases. They do
not share toy toys and objects with those children who may be infected with an illness and they are
not in close contact and quarters with those who are infected. Parents who have more education and
have more social concerns are also likely to be diligent about the cleanliness of the environment and
are more concerned with hand washing and cleanliness. These parents and caregivers exhibit more
responsibility with leaving their children home when an illness is suspected, so as to not infect other
people and children.
Children who are reared in the home environment may experience delays in physical motor skills, as
well as physical growth. This could be due in part to less physical interaction and mirroring of other
children. The environment remaining familiar and the attentive caregiver, home caregivers often
jump to the needs of their children. Although well meaning, this does not allow for the child to
physically explore their surrounds as much as if they had to do it on their own. Children reared in
daycare from any age

Audience Analysis Of Speech

Audience Analysis Paper When it comes to writing and presenting a speech, the audience is a big
factor to account for. Who are you speaking to? How do you grab their attention? Where, when, and
why are you speaking to these people? There are a lot of things to consider when there is a
presentation to be given. When analyzing an audience, there is a process in which to go about doing
so. First, identify the characteristics of your audience, whether demographic or situational, then ask
yourself what techniques can help you meet the audience characteristics, and finally what are some
potential problems that could go along with your analysis. By analyzing your audience, ... Show

  • 1. Essay On Social Play Play Play is important for school functioning as it enables Amelia to connect with peers at kindergarten while learning social and communication skills (Rigby & Rodger, 2006). Direct observation of Amelia's free play was conducted in the back garden and the Test of Playfulness (ToP; Bundy et al., 2001) was adopted to examine her degree of playfulness. Amelia participated in different types of game that predominate in the play of 0– to 7–year–olds (Takata, 1974), including riding bicycle (sensorimotor), making phone calls (functional) and playing doctor (dramatic). Amelia showed enjoyment during play especially in dramatic play like playing doctor, which she engaged in for the sheer pleasure of it without any particular goal. However, the ... This play activity was selected because, as suggested previously, the experience of pretend play and the social interaction involved were Amelia's main source of motivation. In the play transaction the only relevant human environmental factor to consider is Lily. Lily's response to Amelia's verbal cues supported the play. However, 3–year–old Lily did not contribute ideas to the play and therefore, Amelia directed the play most of the time whereas in kindergarten, Amelia is expected to have playmates of similar age that participate in play as equals with her. Furthermore, Amelia's play would be supervised by her teachers at kindergarten, imposing boundaries that limit play activities. Regarding the nonhuman environment, the objects seemed to support Amelia's play. The amount and configuration of space in the garden was physically safe and supportive of play. In contrast, Amelia engages in pretend play in an indoor playroom with multiple playmates at kindergarten. The playroom may be clustered and result in limited space for Amelia to engage in exaggerated behaviours in play. Nevertheless, it may provide access to a wider variety of toys and materials to support pretend play. Synthesis and Recommendations Amelia demonstrates competence in all developmental areas. She presents age–appropriate gross and fine motor skills across motor tasks including writing, feeding, drawing and throwing ball, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Importance Of Physical Literacy One of the main focuses of Physical Education for Generalist Teachers is learning about physical literacy and implementing it into our future classroom and students. Physical literacy is the learning and mastering of basic movements and sport skills that allow a child to analyze their environment and make proper choices to allow them to move surely and controlled in a variety of physical activity circumstances. This is a very important concept to implement into schools as up until recently physical literacy has been underdeveloped in students; thus negatively impacting them in various ways, such as low self–esteem and less community involvement. Five year olds also are very interested in what their body can do and are very curious about how they can use it. Moreover, when looking at a five year old's affective development and social/emotional development they are not interested in gender differences, they are sensitive and individualistic, with a high importance of self–concept. Also at this age child accept defeat poorly, prefer small group activity and seek personal attention. As well as they are sensitive to the feelings of adults and like to please their teacher. In relation to a five year old's psychomotor domain for development they are starting to become spatially aware, understand the names and locations of body parts, also maintain balance while creating shapes with their bodies, walk backwards and walk forwards heel–to–toe. They can proficiently hop and balance on alternate feet, run on their toes, jump proficiently and will begin catching balls using their hands more than arms. Likewise when looking at the development of a child in a higher grade, such as grade two or three at the age of seven, their cognitive, affective, social/emotional and psychomotor development have matured more in some domains than others compared to when they were at the age of five. In terms of the cognitive domain, a seven year old child still often has a short attention span and is interested in what the body can do, but is curious about the 'why' in ... Bilingualism Benefits The Benefits of Bilingualism Nelson Mandela, as cited in U.S Department of Education (2010), once said, if you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart (para. 14). Linguistic diversity has become an important factor in society and more and more people are growing up with the ability to speak more than one language. The Linguistic Society of America (n.d) states that most of the world's population is bilingual or multilingual in the world, where an estimated 5,000 distinct languages are being spoken, and only minorities of citizens are monolingual (para. 1). Being bilingual means that a person is able to speak two languages fluently, while multilingualism means that a person can speak two or more languages with high proficiencies. In the United States and especially in the Washington Metropolitan area, a variety of bilingual people from all different backgrounds and ethnicities live together in one community, so hearing languages from all parts of the world is a phenomenon that can be witnessed on a daily basis. Andrews California State University, Fresno Information TED talk: Daphne Bavelier: Your Brain on Video Games: http://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_bavelier_your_brain_on_video_games? utm_source=tedcomshare&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=tedspread Topic Introduction Everyday both adults and children play video games. Some people argue that video games have many negative effects including poor eyesight and inattention. The TED talk by Daphne Bavelier (2012) discusses some of the current research regarding the effect video games have on your brain. Bavelier (2012) talks more specifically about the effects of action video games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops and similarly formatted games on a person's vision and attention span. This paper will explore both the TED talk by Bavelier (2012) and other relevant research on the subject. Description On average, 90% of school aged individuals and 70% of head of households with a median age of 33, play video games. General wisdom says that playing video games leads to poor eyesight and greater attention deficits with higher rates of distractibility. Bavelier (2012) states that research does not support general wisdom and even refutes it strongly under certain conditions. Bavelier's research has shown that people who play action games such as Call of Duty, actually have better eyesight in at least 2 conditions and are also able to switch attention much more swiftly and with fewer deficits than ... In my project featuring the science of Neurology, the study of the human brain; I will undergo an experiment to see whether male or female have a faster sensory response time. Sensory response, or ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), is the response in the brain sorting gathered information of sensory such as touch, smell, hearing, taste, and sight by relevant and irrelevant information. The response time is the speed differences in the male and female brain in how it gather the information, sort it, and react to what is given, (Google Search, N.D.). In easier term – My experiment will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Past experiments such as one from the Colorado University which shows that men have an advantage over women in response time by approximately 11 seconds average after undergoing a stimulation at the school ("Sensory Reaction Rates Differing Between Men and Women," N.D.). One disadvantage is that everyone have a different level of focus, intelligent, and how pressured they feel when under a test. All these factors added in may caused the experiment for a precise response time have a slight delay(Google Search, N.P.). The best way to approach this is by having the test subjects at a close range of age (Which in this case is 12–14 years old) because the same age group inhabits similar brains in thoughts, attention span, and intelligence level. Different genders have their power points and flaws such as women are proven to be better to respond to pressure and men are better when it comes to natural reflects. For example. when an object such as a ball is being thrown at our way, how will we response with that information? The response differs in men and women. Although male and female are different, what makes the "Stroop Effect" a difficult task for both gender? • 11. Change Blindness Essay The distractions of driving are a popular area of research. Recent studies have looked at what distracts drivers and what other failures of awareness may contribute to traffic accidents. The goal of this paper is to look at research and explain how change blindness can possibly effect driving. One failure of awareness that seems to have a connection with traffic accidents is change blindness. Rensink (2002) proposed that change blindness occurs when a change within the scene goes unnoticed, due to the inability or difficulty to detect it. Resink (2002) also explained that change blindness can take place during a disruption in vision, such as an eye– movement or a blink. (2007) asked the participants to verbally express what they saw in terms of landmarks (e.g restaurants). While the participants explained the landmarks, the experimenter assessed all the driving faults that occurred and tallied the number of correct landmarks that were acknowledged (Lees et al., 2007). Without being biased towards elderly drivers, Lees et al. (2007) found a common factor. It was not so much that older people could not detect change; it was the speed to which they could react to it (Lees et al., 2007). It seemed as though elders are cognitively busy both assessing the change and deciding what to in regards to it. Lees et al. (2007) acknowledged that people of all ages are susceptible to traffic crashes and proposed that people be aware of the need of attention in driving. Lees et al. (2007) also explained that when researching on different ages, specific stimuli may be considered more attractive to one individual more so than the other. While Lees and coworkers emphasized on elderly drivers Galpin and coworkers acknowledged drivers as a whole. Galpin, Underwood and Crundal (2009) conducted a research that explained how quick disruptions in ones visual field can affect the ability to detect changes. Galpal et al. • 13. The Attention Span Myth Summary The Price of Attention In Virginia Heffernan's essay "The Attention–Span Myth," she argues against the "ineffable quality" (115) associated with the attention span. At first she provides both sides of the attention corruption by technology debate, but then questions the definition of the attention span and its very existence. According to Heffernan, the attention span is an inaccurate tool for measurement, as can be seen by looking at the works of past authors who recognize the virtues of "distractibility" (114). While she addresses the value of a short attention span, Heffernan fails to provide direct evidence in support of her "phantom idea of an attention span" (115) theory. She gets lost in the world of "hyperactive" (114) genius and never quite gets around to thoroughly backing up her concluding argument. While Heffernan may believe that attention spans "have become the digital–age equivalent of souls" (113), equating the barely–mentioned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each time we write an essay or read a book we have to find a way to concentrate on one area for a long period of time. Heffernan's fervent interest in the distraction–glorifying past is deceptive. She presents the case of Moby–Dick and Ahab's "monomania" (114) as if it is pro–distraction, when really it just recognizes the danger of obsession. Focus does not equal obsession. Even Tom Sawyer's interest in beetles is a case for the opportunity for focus interest presents, not distraction. The German Bertolt Brecht and his anti–boredom theater again simply stress the importance of interest and constant contemplation. The attention span is not the enemy, but rather a resource for great thinking. The inability to understand how to use it properly does not render it null and void as Heffernan would have you believe. If anything, the attention span is imperative for getting the most out of the human mind by understanding its limits. No attention span can last ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Negative Effects Of Technology If you walk around campus, almost every student is either looking down at their phone or has headphones in listening to music on their smartphone. Sitting in class nearly every student pulls out laptops to take notes on and complete homework. This exposure to technology is starting at an extremely young age now a day. Children at the young age of two can unlock a smartphone or tablet and play the game they desire. Everything we need to know is right at our fingertips thanks to smartphones and tablets that have access to the internet at all times. The younger generation does not know the world without technology, which is able to help them when stuck on a homework problem or seeing what is trending on the internet. Technology has changed the way humans interact with each other and changed the way we complete tasks, such as homework. There is no need to look up terms in a dictionary, when a Quizlet has all the answers. While some people may argue that the world has become better due to the technological advances, Technology is having a negative outcome on children and adolescent's development with long term effects such as health illnesses that is changing the way people interact with each other. Neil postman was a jack of all trades, he was an American Author, an educator at New York University, media theorist, and cultural critic. (PressThink 1) In 1985 Neil Postman published a book called Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourage in the Age of show Business. The book provides a look at what happens when politics, journalism, education and even religion become subject to the demands of entertainment. In his book Amusing Ourselves to Death Postman says that the content of a culture is contained in its communication, and that the content of communication is affected by the medium of communication. In other words, Postman is saying that a culture is defined by its connection of people, and the connection of people is afflicted by technology. Sherry Turkle is another author that has written a book called Alone Together published in January 2011. Sherry Turkle is an award winning professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she focuses her research on human technology interaction. Alone Together is the results of Turkle's nearly fifteen year exploration of our lives with technology, she describes new unsettling relationships between friends, family, parents and children, and new instabilities in how we understand privacy and community. • 23. Change Blindness Change blindness is the incapacity to detect changes to a visual scene. Over the past decade, many researchers (Simons & Levin, 1997; Simons & Rensink, 2005) have studied and reviewed this phenomena among several experiments. Notably, these studies have given contribution to understand perception, attention, and awareness. In experiments of scene memory, subjects viewed hundreds of photographs of natural scenes. Afterward, they were asked to identify which photograph they had seen and which ones they had never viewed before. Even though subjects can recognize previously viewed pictures very well, the memories were not linked to the precise visual form. In addition, subjects failed to detect changes when the images were mirror–reversed. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For that reason, the existence of movement transients across the retina might help to change blindness. Transients also play a role drawing attention. Under those circumstances, mimicking the eye movement without changing the fixation location can help to understand change blindness. The flicker paradigm was designed to test this hypothesis. In the flicker paradigm, an original image, a blank gray screen, and a modified image are presented respectively in a fast alternation, giving the display a flickering appearance. The cycle of rotation repeats until subjects report the change. The response latency is used as a measure of change blindness. The results showed that the change detection during the first cycle of alternation was almost zero and did not increase too much after one minute of alternation. Interestingly, when the blank gray screen was removed, the changes were detected easily. Experiments using real world situations also demonstrated change blindness by people. Surprisingly, the age of the participants reflected in how they noticed the changes. This was depending on if the experimenters had almost their same age, especially to younger participants. There are also inventions to meet the objectives to maximize the scratch pad efficiency and to minimize the frequency and influence of pop–ups; they will be summarized below. For the first invention, one must focus on the preparation, requiring little conscious attention, and taking up little space on the "scratch pad". In the writers' perspective, the purpose of preparation is to create "shortcuts" that will make resulting patterns of complex motor actions (like for example, the fingering sequence) more or less automatic. While in the process, an approach can be marking one's music at critical points, such as where accidentals appear and the location of key or tempo changes; another would be using different colored sticky notes as cues for some aspects of playing. The mentor must also be willing to help the student perhaps through bringing one to the performance venue, letting each rehearse in the performance order, and requiring one to assume a "ready position" every time he/she steps on the podium. As for the second and third invention, one must increase his/her focal attention. • 29. Research on the Logistics and Mechanisms of Attention Attention is a mechanism directly involved in the selection, distribution and maintenance of processing resources, which determines our ability to process complex and multiple stimuli from our environment and is crucial to our success and survival. Given the large magnitude of visual information we encounter every day, the existence of a selective mechanism –at a conscious and unconscious level– that regulates what we pay attention to is indisputable; it has even been conceptualized as a supramodal mechanism that distributes cognitive resources according to task complexity and motivation (Salthouse , Rogan & Prill , 1984). Initially conceived as a single spotlight alternating amongst foci (Tiffin, Knight & Jackson, 1946), attention is now understood to be beneficial due to its capacity to divide. Nevertheless, there is a limit in scope and manner, so we are constantly promoting the priority processing of certain information in the presence of multiple stimuli (Rosselló, 1999). Understanding the logistical constrains behind this prioritization and allocation of resources is thus important from a theoretical perspective (Vergauwe et al., 2010), but also due to its practical implications in various fields such as the military, sports, transportation, safety and education (Strayer & Johnston, 2001; Gingerich & Lineweaver, 2014). Generally, these constrains have been studied in two specific domains: space and time. Regarding space, visual search paradigms explore how stimulus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These findings may reflect mechanisms relating to impaired speech perception by older people in "cocktail–party" listening situations ( Getzman, Golob, Wascher 7). Older adults also preformed significantly worse than the younger group when they first had to determine the speaker of the target stimulus, focus their attention on this speaker, and then identify the target company value among the concurrent values. Attention is a fascinating and highly researched area in psychology. We use attention every day and though it seems like something simple it is actually a complex process. Some of the most interesting studies conducted were cases where people were not paying attention as one would assume. Phenomena like Pseudoneglect, Hemispatial neglect, and Inattentional blindness incites psychologists because they want to know why such cognitive deficits occur. These types of phenomena all stems from attention. The ability to be completely normal, but make leftward errors in line bisection because the left side of space tends to be favored; the ability to only attend to one side of one's body and completely ignore the other; or the fact that we miss activities that occur right in front us, all contribute to cognitive research that interest researchers. Studies about attention are separated into two groups, spatial attention and temporal attention. Spatial attention simply means attention in space and temporal attention measures attention over time. This study concentrates on temporal attention and how it relates to learning. In this study we wanted to measure whether or not implicit learning occurs with time in the RSVP task. Imagination; a Human's Special Sence Essay Daimaly Gines 10/25/12 FD #3 Expos, Section Imagination: A Human's Special Sense Human beings have the ability to create their own individual worlds through imagination. However, the imagination is limited because of the constant use of technology and the reliance on vision. The technological culture has separated humans from the actual world and their senses; much like vision has done. In the essay "The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses", Juhani Pallasmaa focuses on the exploration of the senses and how they interact with one another. We also see his discussion on how vision can affect the human experience. The more visually capable we are, the more we begin to lose our sense of imagination. Similarly in the essay ... This occurs to blind people such as Hull, who at the age of forty–eight became completely blind. Sacks states that Hull "speaks of how the sound of the rain, never before accorded much attention, can now delineate a whole landscape for him...it throws a coloured blanket over previously invisible things" (304). In other words, we see that Sacks is showing us how strong Hull's imagination was after becoming blind. Just because Hull became blind, it did not mean that Hull's life was over. On the other hand, it was a new beginning for Hull. He was able to make use of his other senses and see how important they are. With Hull's imagination also came a sense of intimacy with his surroundings. He felt as though with his strong visual imagery, he had a strong sense of closeness, which evolves from imagining. The term 'delineate' has a significant meaning in Sack's text because imagination is what led Hull to be able to portray the images precisely in his mind. Throughout the years, media has changed since the transition from newspapers to television broadcasting because of the changes of entertainment and what people are into as time goes on. In the book Amusing Ourselves to Death, Postman looks at how print culture or "typography" has changed the media, how it evolved to television and what it's doing to our culture and the way that people think. I agree to his analysis and conclusions about how television has changed our thinking. We've became a society that won't be persuaded unless we're entertained or it has some kind of emotional appeal to it. Ever since televisions and printed images came into existence, we get easily bored when something isn't captivating. This causes us to have different perspectives thanks to how the media portrays certain situations. Perceptual Processing Essay The Special Role of Faces in Perceptual Processing Attention is often diverted by irrelevant distractors despite the need to concentrate on a task, and this is prevalent in daily life (e.g. ads pop– ups while working on the computer, signboards while driving). The perceptual load theory suggests that attention is an automatic process with limited capacity – all stimuli will be processed within its capacity limits (Lavie, 1995). In accordance with the theory, interference from irrelevant distractors is dependent on the amount of perceptual load. Task–irrelevant stimuli would be unattended in high– load conditions since information processing is at its full capacity, preventing further processing, whereas in low–load conditions, spare capacity 'spills over' to process the irrelevant distractors (Lavie & Cox, 1997). Several studies have supported the perceptual load theory and the capability of irrelevant distractors to be processed automatically. • 57. Memory Vs Bilingual And Memory Bilinguals and memory Language is an important way to communicate with people around us in the world, but many people around us speak more than one language. Bilinguals are people who can speak at least two languages. There are a lot of debating on whether monolinguals have better memory or bilinguals. Many research has shown similar results with the similar experiments. It is true that monolinguals do know more words in a language but when it comes to memory, bilinguals have better memory. Bilinguals do make grammar mistakes a lot, and mix up the languages to get their point across but overall, they are better able to focus on what to remember. Body We always hear that knowing two languages is better than one, it will take you farther in future. People who speak at least two languages are bilinguals. A study conducted by Blom et. al (2017) compare bilinguals and monolinguals and their memory ability (p. 3). Bilinguals have outperformed monolinguals in memory experiment (Blom et. al, 2017, p. 1). According to Blom et. al (2017) bilinguals pick up cues to know remember and answer correctly (p. 2). If a bilingual knows both languages really well than their cognitive ability is much higher than a monolingual (Blom et. al, 2017, p. 2). Examining the Effect of Peppermint on Cognitive Functioning. Psi Chi, The International Honor Society In Psychology, 19 (3), 88–97. This study speaks about whether or not an alerting odor, such as peppermint, can affect attention and working memory. Research has been completed previously on the influences of odorants on cognitive functioning, physiology, behavior, and mood. From earlier research, it was resulted that a person's atmosphere was affected in either a positive or negative way; depending on the type of smell they inhaled. If a participant smelled an unpleasant smell, it was determined that the person would have a negative change in their mood; when the participant would inhale a positive smell, their mood would change positively. The study consisted of fifty, female, undergraduate college students. The ethnicities that were use for this study were African American, European, Asian, Hispanic, biracial, and a very slight percentage was categorized as other. The experiment would begin at 5:00pm everyday, for four weeks. One of the three groups was administered each day. The three groups were either peppermint, expectation, or control. Each participant was seated down, given an instruction sheet, a laptop, and was not able to see the other participants from their view. The participants were told to put a facemask on and leave it on until they were told ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is becoming more prevalent every year, "with an incidence of about 100 to 300 per 100 000" (Konrad et al 2010). Mild traumatic brain injury or concussion can be the result of any minor trauma to the head from accident, sports related injury, blast injury, or fall. "Possible acute symptoms of mTBI comprise short–time unconsciousness, headache, dizziness, irritability, anxiety and impaired neuropsychological functions such as reduced attention, concentration or memory problems" (Evans, 1992; Hall et al. 2005 as cited by Konrad et al 2010). • 63. The Effects Of Digital Media On Child Development Throughout the years, technology has impacted our daily lives. Specifically, digital media, which is our smart phones, laptops, video games, and anything else that is computerized. We rely on digital media through everyday tasks because it has proven to be beneficial in navigating and connecting us with the world, however there is great debate whether our technology has any detrimental effect on our cognitive development and skills. As we know, technology has become a great part of our identity. Although, there is evidence that digital media has various benefits and risks for our cognition. Nevertheless, it remains a topic of discussion since technology continues to thrive and become part of our daily routine. Chassiakos and colleagues (2016) discusses the costs and benefits of digital and social media use in children and adolescents. There are various ways digital and social media may impact the child's development. The authors explain that digital media may improve cognitive and social development for young children depending on the amount of exposure, type of digital content, and active parental guidance. Additionally, the authors explain how digital media advocates social engagement and community that helps teenager's development and self–esteem. However, the authors provide plenty of evidence that the use of digital and social media may be linked to the risk of obesity, cognitive development, safety, mental health, behavioral risks, and sleep deprivation. Johnstrude Observation And Summary Introduction The speech perception study conducted by Johnstrude and his colleagues in 2013 was an in–depth investigation of selective attention, focusing on the interrelation of hearing and familiarity. The purpose of the experiment was to examine the variations of people's attending and shadowing ability when letting them listen to two simultaneous voices, manipulating the volumes and the timbres. Johnstrude set three conditions: familiar target voice and novel masker voice, novel target and familiar masker, and novel baseline (both voices are novel). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Participants' correct responses will always be lower than the scores in the familiar–target condition from Johnstrude's original study since it is harder to ignore a familiar masker voice than a novel masker voice. Increasing the volume of the target voice can mitigate the interference of the masker voice but cannot make participants totally overcome it. Meanwhile, the correct responses throughout the task will be higher than the familiar–masker condition because it will take less effort to attend to a familiar target voice than a novel target voice. Besides, older participants will score lower than younger participants due to the weakening of perceptual abilities and more wrong voice errors (failure to distinguish the two call signs). For old people in the experiment, familiarities of both the spouse's and the friend's voices will intensify with the increase of age, so will the interference of the masker ... New Medi New Digital Age Living in a new digital age, we are seeing more computerized devices like smartphone and computers replacing old media technologies like newspaper, radio and television. Characteristics of new media as being digital, computerized, interactive and hypersexual have shaped new forms of communication. Meanwhile, the ability of new media to merge different forms of media technologies, industries and services so called convergence has also created unprecedented transformations in the society. Thus, new media is reproducing itself through different old technologies. Not only new media is remediating its predecessors, it also shapes new modes of subjectivity. Subjectivity means the process of being a subject; it refers to who we are to how we react to the world. The emergence of new media has unprecedentedly change the subjectivity of different things. For example, we are experiencing new forms of textual experiences and representations such as genre, form and consumption. There are new forms of embodiment and identity that change how we perceive ourselves and our bodies. Organization also changes the rules of ownership, control, regulation. These subjectivities are all being reshaped due to the change of our relationship with technologies. The example discussed in lecture is subjectivity related to selfies. Media technologies has created selfies which are these self–portraits taken by phones that gets uploaded to social media. It is a convergence of technology, interaction and body. Selfies become a way to call to the world about who we are and a commanding representation of self. Because the immediacy, ubiquity and ephemerality of the social media, selfies have embodied these characteristics and become instant, common and short–lived. • 71. Using Visual Stimulation How Using Visual Stimulation Can Allow Children to Learn Without Being Bored It all started back in the year of 2000 when I began to teach Sunday school. The children that I taught were the ages from four years to six years old. I really enjoyed teaching that age group at the time. Every week I would read them the Bible lesson for that week. I used the expression in my voice to try to make the lesson interesting. Also, I had an assistant teacher who would do all types of arts and craft projects with them. This begins to get boring to me week after week. I started to thinking about how I can teach in a different way. Children in this age group have a short attention span. • 73. Observation Of A Child Observation Over the past few weeks I have observed a child in the twelve to eighteen month old category. Throughout this paper I will refer to him as Z. I had five different observations, each for one hour at the West Chester Area Day Care. I sat in classroom seven, in a little chair in the corner writing down everything I observed about him. It was interesting to learn about Z as I watched him interact with the adults and other kids that were in the room with him. Z caught my attention right away in the classroom. He was very active, walking around while the other children were mainly sitting or only crawling. This lead me to choose him to observe for this project, and focus on his physical movement and interactions with others throughout this paper. Z was always moving around, the only time he was ever sitting still was when he was placed in a height chair for snack time. He switched between crawling and walking. Most of the time he would walk, but then he would fall down and continue to wherever his destination was by crawling. I noticed one day he was holding a maraca and walked for a longer period of time than usual. According to (page 183 infants children and adolescents), it is easier for them to focus on their balance when they are holding onto an object. He demonstrated the ability t squat down and picking something up, before returning to a standing position. The adults encouraged his walking behaviors, so when the group came in from the outside playground, they would let him walk in, while most of the other kids were being pushed in the giant stroller. The average age for most kids to begin walking is 11 months and 3 weeks, the range being 9 to 17 months, so he his definitely on track for his age group (182). He was also able to climb up onto things. For example, when the children were brought on walks around the neighborhood there was a giant stroller that they rode in as mentioned earlier. Z got up the step and turned himself around to sit down in the seat. He did the same thing on some of the steps on the playground, crawling up one and turning himself around to sit. Walking up stairs with help is achieved on average at 16 months, so he appears to be on the right track towards that motor skill. A baby's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While many parents struggle with this decision, others do not have the luxury of choice; many questions are raised asking if it is beneficial or harmful for infants and young children to attend daycare, spending the majority of their waking hours with caregivers other than their parents. There are of course many opinions and studies regarding this issue. As with any controversial topic there is no right or wrong answers for the masses. Perhaps the easiest and most straightforward aspect to asses regarding the effects of the different types of care is the physical development of infants and children. These are objective findings which can easily and definitely be measured. Children raised in a home care setting are obviously less likely to catch illness such as colds and flu, chicken pox and other communicable diseases. They do not share toy toys and objects with those children who may be infected with an illness and they are not in close contact and quarters with those who are infected. Parents who have more education and have more social concerns are also likely to be diligent about the cleanliness of the environment and are more concerned with hand washing and cleanliness. These parents and caregivers exhibit more responsibility with leaving their children home when an illness is suspected, so as to not infect other people and children. Children who are reared in the home environment may experience delays in physical motor skills, as well as physical growth. This could be due in part to less physical interaction and mirroring of other children. The environment remaining familiar and the attentive caregiver, home caregivers often jump to the needs of their children. Although well meaning, this does not allow for the child to physically explore their surrounds as much as if they had to do it on their own. Children reared in daycare from any age ...
