FILM MUSIC
 Movies used to be silent
 The use of the Piano or Organ enhanced the visual
impact of the film
FILM MUSIC
 The role of the Piano Player was varied
They would:
 1) Add effects such as; door knocking, gun shots etc…
 2) Settle the audience
 3) Cover the sound of the projector
 4) Help to focus the audience on the mood of the film
 Since this time, sound and music have become essential ingredients to the success of a
film
FILM MUSIC
 Popular songs, both old and new, are often heard in
films
 Music is used in this way to promote a film
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F2QE8O-Y1g
FILM MUSIC
Music for films can be divided into two categories;
 1) Incidental Music
 2) Theme Music
 Incidental music does not have a set theme or melody
 It is the background music used to accompany the on-screen action
for the audience
 Provides the audience with information e.g. by a build up of suspense,
music can prepare the audience for something that is about to take
place
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxqHVoZ0fzc
The Whacky Wabbit!
 Fill out the sheet given to you by your teacher while
watching; The Whacky Wabbit!

Incidental Music…
 The Murder from Psycho
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMTrVgpDwPk (Play from 4’30)
Bernard Herrmann’s music to the Alfred Hitchcock classic film; ‘Psycho’ gives an outstanding example of tension
that can be created by an Orchestra.
Listen to the theme song and answer the following Questions;
 1) Name the family of instruments that are playing
 2) Describe the Tone Colours of these
 3) Give two ways tension is created in this excerpt
 4) Describe how Pitch is used in this excerpt
Incidental Music…
 Concerning Hobbits
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYr0Bvnc2Yg
In this scene the Hobbits are leaving their home town of The Shire. The music has
a number of contrasts that reflect the emotions of sadness, happiness, adventure
and some apprehensions that the Hobbits are experiencing or are soon to
experience.
Incidental Music
With reference to the musical concepts, discuss the contrasts heard in this
excerpt;

THEME MUSIC
 The term Theme is often used in place of the musical terms; “Tune” and
“Melody”
 Audiences remember a film or television show by the main song

TELEVISION
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhAN-L0EzCI
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7L2PVdrb_8
THEME MUSIC
 Themes that appear in movies may be composed specifically for the movie, for
example John Williams’ music for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars’
 Sometimes existing songs or classical music fits the emotion of the scene so
well that this may be used
 List as many movies as you can that use existing songs and name the
song/band/singer

MUSIC AND ADVERTISING
 Music and sound effects have become a crucial part of the advertising of a
product
 Music is used to support the images and emotions to enhance the
interaction and communication with the audience
 Easily recognised melodies and songs support images so that the product
presented in the advertisement stays in the back of the consumer’s mind
 Music is selected according to the directed age group of the advertisement
MUSIC AND ADVERTISEMENT
 Can you name a current advertisement aimed at the
following age groups?
 What kind of Music is playing or do you think would
be appropriate?
 1) Children ____________
 2) Teenagers___________
 3) Mums ______________
 4) Dads _______________
MUSIC AND ADVERTISING
 FEATURES OF A SUCCESSFUL ADVERTISEMENT
 15 – 30 seconds in length
 Must contain much Information about the product
 Melody – must be easy to sing
 Needs to include a Hook that catches the listener’s attention and names the product e.g. “Oh
What a Feeling, Toyota!”
 Rhythm – Catchy and enjoyable
 Instruments – Must reflect the nature of the product e.g. a car advertising a Luxury Car
might have classical music playing to portray high status and class where as an advertisement
for a four wheel drive might have Rock Music to portray a rugged and fast car.
 The Structure of the advertisement should allow the catchphrase or hook to be stated a
number of times in a very short period. The advertisement then must be short and repetitious
to ensure the information is retained by the listener.
MUSIC AND ADVERTISING
 Using your Ipads, complete the following task;
 Listen to several different advertisements and

 ii) Describe the Style of Music or sound effects used
 iii) Name the age group being targeted
TV Ad Product Style of

Feeling…Toyota!”
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJZ2w6Q_Uww

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K8lrVjT6fM

Music and Advertising
