4. Satellite Radio
● One of the fastest-growing entertainment services
in the world!
● It is basically a digital unit that receives signals
broadcast by communications satellite. This allows a
person to listen his favourite stations anywhere in the
country unlike the terrestrial radio (AM and FM)
whose signals are limited to a certain area depending
on the power of the station.
● Aim: The system primarily aims at providing
educational services to rural areas in developing
countries.
● Advantages:
○ Sound is of digital quality
○ No commercials
○ Quality music 24X7
● Disadvantages:
○ It is not for free
● WorldSpace: First and Only Indian satellite radio with
40 Channels in 16 Genres
● In India, WorldSpace had gone on air in 2000
● Went off air on December 2009 because of the
financial difficulties of its founder, Ethiopia-born lawyer
Noah Samara, it had disappointed 4.5 lakh customers
in India.
● Timbre Media (along with Vodafone), Bangalore
based start-up, that had acquired the liceence to
use the WorldSpace brand, is re-launching its
services for mobile users in India in 2013

5. Amateur radio
● People use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, or even into
space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It's fun, social, educational,
and can be a lifeline during times of need.
● Amateur radio (ham radio) - practised by more than 16,000 licensed users in India
● Played an important part in the Indian independence movement
● The Wireless and Planning and Coordination Wing (WPC)—a division of the Ministry of Communications and
Information Technology—regulates amateur radio in India.

● In 2005, India became one of few countries to launch an amateur radio satellite, the HAMSAT

2006 Limca Book of Records under the entry "most ham operators on horseback on a foxhunt"
