16. Introduction to topic
Employee
Employee satisfaction is the terminology used to describe whether employees are happy and
contented and fulfilling their desires and needs at work. Many measures purport that
employee satisfaction is a factor in employee motivation, employee goal achievement, and
positive employee morale in the workplace.
Employee satisfaction, while generally a positive in your organization, can also become a
downer if mediocre employees stay because they are satisfied and happy with your work
environment.
Factors contributing to employee satisfaction include treating employees with respect,
providing regular employee recognition, empowering employees, offering above industry-
average benefits and compensation, providing employee perks and company activities, and
positive management within a success framework of goals, measurements, and expectations.
The critical factor with employee satisfaction is that satisfied employees must do the job and
make the contributions that the employer needs. If they don't, all that the employer does to
provide an environment that satisfies employees is for naught.
Measuring Employee Satisfaction
Employee satisfaction is often measured by anonymous employee satisfaction surveys that
are administered periodically to gauge employee satisfaction. (I do not support these as most
employers do them. See how to improve employee satisfaction surveys.)
In an employee satisfaction survey, employee satisfaction is looked at in areas such as:
management,
understanding of mission and vision,
empowerment,
teamwork,
communication, and
coworker interaction.
The facets of employee satisfaction measured vary from company to company.
A second method used to measure employee satisfaction is meeting with small groups of
employees and asking the same questions verbally.
Depending on the culture of the company, and whether employees feel free to provide
feedback, either method can contribute knowledge about the degree of employee satisfaction
to managers and employees.
Exit interviews are another way to assess employee satisfaction in that satisfied employees
rarely leave companies.
17. How to Make Employee Satisfaction Surveys Successful
A satisfaction survey is used by an organization or a business to measure the liking and
approval of a particular group of stakeholders for its services, work environment, culture, or
employment. Specifically, for this Human Resources site, an employee satisfaction survey is
the survey most frequently noted.
A satisfaction survey is a series of questions that employees answer to inform the employer
about how they feel about or how they experience their work environment and culture.
The questionnaire usually offers both questions that ask employees to rate a particular aspect
of the work environment and open-ended questions that allow them to express opinions.
With carefully chosen questions that do not lead to particular answers, an employer can get
the feel for the happiness, satisfaction, and engagement of employees. When a satisfaction
survey is used at specific intervals, such as annually, an employer can track employee
satisfaction over time to see if it is improving.
Effective Satisfaction Surveys Require Employer Actions
If an employer decides to use a satisfaction survey, the employer must commit to making
changes in the work environment based on the employee responses to the survey. This is the
bottom line for employers who are considering administering a survey to employees.
The employer who chooses to use a satisfaction survey with employees must be committed to
reporting the results to employees. Additionally, the employer should be committed to
making changes to the work environment, with the help and involvement of employees and
teams of employees.
Communicating transparently about the changes, their impact, and future plans are all part of
a positive satisfaction survey process.
Without the transparent communication, results reporting, and employee updates, employees
will not trust the employer's motives in collecting survey data.
Over time, employees will cease to respond or respond only with answers that they believe
the employer wants to hear. This makes the data collected on the survey useless.
The involvement of employees in improving the work environment based on survey results
creates an environment of shared responsibility for workplace culture and improvements.
Employers should avoid leading employees to believe that satisfaction at work is the
employer's responsibility. Employee satisfaction is a shared responsibility. So, is the response
to an employee satisfaction survey.
Employee satisfaction or job satisfaction is, quite simply, how content or satisfied employees
are with their jobs. Employee satisfaction is typically measured using an employee
satisfaction survey. These surveys address topics such as compensation, workload,
perceptions of management, flexibility, teamwork, resources, etc.
18. These things are all important to companies who want to keep their employees happy and
reduce turnover, but employee satisfaction is only a part of the overall solution. In fact, for
some organizations, satisfied employees are people the organization might be better off
without.
Employee satisfaction and employee engagement are similar concepts on the surface, and
many people use these terms interchangeably. Employee satisfaction covers the basic
concerns and needs of employees. It is a good starting point, but it usually stops short of what
really matters.
19. Literature Review
Savery (1989) highlighted the job satisfaction of nurses in Perth, Western Australia. The job
satisfaction level of the nurses was mainly due to interesting and challenging work which was
followed by a feeling of achievement wherein, he even said salary was ranked as a very low
satisfier. The job satisfaction level increased as the person grew old where in the variables like
gender, time in hospital, position held were controlled. Organizations should always focus on
satisfying the three basic needs (Individual motivators, Employee relationships and personal
relationships) of anemployee whichwillinreturnhelpthe employeesinachieving job satisfaction.
Melvin(1993) statedthat the environmental design of an organization plays a very important role
in job satisfaction at the same time it also plays an important role in employees high job
involvement.A good environmental design of an organization helps in resolving the conflicts and
confusion. The author even cites that it is the responsibility of the management to design the
environmentinsucha mannerthat itreducesthe dissatisfaction where in the work tasks, working
patterns are properly mentioned.
MacDermid(1999) studiedthe jobsatisfactionlevel of workaholics. He said there are six variables
of workaholic patterns i.e. Workaholics, Enthusiastic Workaholics, Work Enthusiastic, Unengaged
Workers, Relaxed Workers and Disenchanted Workers. The job satisfaction level and career
satisfactionlevel wasmuchmore inEnthusiasticWorkaholics,WorkEnthusiastic,Relaxed Workers
than Workaholics, Unengaged Workers and Disenchanted Workers because of the future career
prospects, working involvement, drive and work enjoyment.
Beumont (1982) in his article highlights the job satisfaction level of general household in United
States & Britain where in there is a close fit relationship in U.S than Britain. In the study he found
that in U.S there is a positive relationship between Job Satisfaction and Age where as in Britain it
was considerably low. Partridge (1981) studied the job satisfaction level of women in Britain in
whichhe foundthat the jobsatisfactionlevel of womenwasmore as compared with black men, as
theynormallyhave lowexpectationsfromtheirjobs. At the same time they have a greater feeling
that the alternative jobs available to them differs very less than those available to them.
Savery (1987) highlightsthe effectof motivatorsonjobsatisfaction. He states intrinsic motivators’
helpsinachieving job satisfaction. The study says stress being one of the major reason leading to
dissatisfaction therefore it has to be taken care of properly to reduce the level of dissatisfaction.
The immediate supervisor is the person who has a major influence on job satisfaction. The
supervisor helps in increasing the satisfaction level by offering more of intrinsic motivators like
20. challengingworkandcareerdevelopmenttothe subordinates and he is the one who provides the
most tangible assistance to the subordinate.
Singh & Jain (2013) highlightson employees job satisfaction and its impact on their performance.
Employees’attitude reflectsthe moral of the company.Happyemployeesplayan important role in
the areas of customers’ service and sales as they are the one to interact with the customer on a
daily basis. Work environment is the key factor in job satisfaction. Good work environment and
good working conditions leads to job satisfaction at the same time helps in increasing employee
work performance, profitability, customer satisfaction as well as retention.

36. Limitation of the study
Every study conducted may have certain short comings and unfortunately ours is also similar
case. A few errors have crept in despite ours best effort to avoid them but it is expected that still
our study and finding are very much relevant. An error may have been due to the sample taken
not conforming to the actual population. This is because the sample is convenience sample.
Personal bias oe errorsof the interviewer might also have crept in some cases, while
interpreting the respondents, certain questions which are not properly responded by the
responders. Some of respondents have not responded totally.
It is only for short period of time.
Lack of professional approach since researcher is a student.
The sample size is only 50 so the sample may not be truly representative of the
population
