The Negative Effects Of Technology On Society
Technology is something that shapes our society to be what it is today. Much of it consists of things
we use in our everyday lives such as cell phones, internet, etc. People don't even think twice about
using these things because they come so natural to us now. Many years ago, people probably
couldn't even imagine that most of these things could actually be possible. Technology is arguably
the main factor that has changed society, however, the main debate is whether or not these changes
are actually advantageous. Roxanna Henke and Stephen Colbert are two people who have made an
effort to try to prove the negative effects of technology. Their audiences may choose to accept or
reject the ideas, so it's key for both of them to use rhetorical devices that can effectively get people
to agree with them. The question is, who can better convey their notions to the audience? If we
closely analyze both of their efforts to persuade, It's evident that Stephen Colbert does a better job.
In the text "Not So Social Media," Roxanne Henke gives her view on the way that social media is
affecting behavior of people in real life social environments. It's obvious that many people today use
social media; Some would say that people use it too much. According to Manuel Castells in the
article "The Impact of Internet on Society: A Global Perspective," the number of social media users
reached 1 billion by 2010, and has gone up drastically every year since. Henke uses personal
experiences and

The Female Body Image : Women 's Bodies And The Diary Of...
The group presentation topic that Missy, Alli, and I decided to work on was Body Image.
Particularly the female body image portrayed in media and how it can affect young girls and women
alike. The materials we've chosen so far are a speech given by Jennifer Aniston on women's bodies
and The diary of Anne Frank. We have also chosen People magazine, because of their "tips and
tricks" for weight loss and makeup, plus our own experiences as women(People). They are easily
alike in the matter that they all deal with women and how they have grown up over time each
showcasing body image issues. However, they differ not only in time range but also with how these
examples showcase body image. The magazines portray body image as a source of power and
something everyone should aspire to gain. Jennifer although talking about hardships bring into light
that Hollywood has one specific standard of beauty(Anniston). When Anne Frank I believe has the
most realistic portrayal of a female teenager dealing with body image from our sources, because
looking at the book when she was even in the camp Anne would still have moments of insecurity
while she faces near death(Frank). Obviously personal experience for all three of us helped a lot too.
When dealing with word choice for the script and from the materials, and overall topic we decided
as a group to show body image as a problem but keep it light hearted. The materials we found
towards this topic all showed how a woman young or old, and rich

The Television Show South Park
The difference between the intended meaning of media texts and what the audience actually
perceives can be shockingly different. Producers of media can do everything possible to force
audiences to experience their work in the way they want them to, but in the end they still take away
many different meanings even within the same audience. Stuart Hall outlines this in his encoding
and decoding model. One of the most apparent examples of this is the television show South Park.
The television show South Park is a media text with the producers' preferred meaning of being
decoded as joke or as being satire, but many audience members take an oppositional stance of taking
it seriously. This is clear from the examples of controversy when South Park aired episodes focused
on Scientology, red–headed people, and Islam. Through these examples it is demonstrated that the
producers of media have less power compared to the audience in determining the meaning of media.
In Hall's encoding and decoding model he argues that encoding and decoding the meaning of media
is not a single–sided process but one shared by both the producers and the audience. The producers
encode their preferred meaning into the media using frameworks of knowledge, relations of
production, and technical infrastructure (Hall, 1997). Frameworks of knowledge are the producers'
beliefs and what they assume about the audience's beliefs. Relations of production are the needs of
the financial side of the industry. Technical

The Perception Of Self Awareness
In America, our self–image undoubtedly plays a significant role in our daily lives. In an ever–
changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of which we believe the world sees us. But is
this true of all people? "Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people can easily
be detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta & Henrich,
2008)." Perception, especially self–perception, can vary vastly from one culture to another. One
perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that "East Asian's attempt to place their
concern with self–concept in the hands of the people around them, as opposed to some other
cultures that can be found to focus more prominently on individualism ... Show more content on

Our positive feelings of ourselves may decrease because we realize we have fallen short of the
standards that we try to live by and we immediately take action to work within those standards.
However, action when in a state of self–awareness may vary across cultures. Since self–awareness
can deviate among cultures, it may alter our perception of the way we believe the world sees us.
There have been experiments on self–awareness that have measured cross cultural differences but
one in particular studied cultures from both individualistic and collectivist cultures. The study
focused on two cultures from different continents, and in virtually entirely different worlds. In the
experiment, the objective self–awareness of both Japanese and Americans were tested. East Asians
not only find it more important to focus on their audience, but they value the view of the audience
about themselves more than they value their own view of themselves (Heine et al, 2008). This
aspect of the Japanese leads to a more profound skill set when dealing with others around them.
"The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience will notice
the sound of their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of attention in the
third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an audience member, rather than their
own. People of an East Asian

The Four Theories Of Passive Audience Theory
Active Audience Theory
Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the
role audience play and their ability to actively engage with communication medians. The idea of
deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the
1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience.
In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart Hall challenged the traditional theories of an
audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the
current understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this
section a brief description of the earlier theory of the audiences as passive viewers will be presented
to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions
to the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active
research theory and its contribution to communication medians today.
Passive Audience Theory
During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed
events rather than actively responding to the event in the media. During this time, several theories
were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think
about the information just simply receive the information. Hypodermic Needle Model by Katz &

Militarism Vs. Trump
Introduction
Following a decisive victory against Ted Cruz in the Indiana primaries, reality TV star and real
estates moghul Donald J Trump has secured his position as the presumptive republican nominee. In
his last white house correspondence dinner, Obama jokingly criticized the media for putting
excessive focus on Trump. According to Nick Timiraos' (2016) article published in the Wall Street
Journal, Obama said, "I want to show some restraint because I think we can all agree from the start
he's gotten the appropriate amount of coverage befitting the seriousness of his candidacy. The guy
just wanted to give his hotel business a boost, and now we are all praying that Cleveland makes it

schedule a meeting with Donald Trump at Trump Tower to "clear the air". The meeting was
brokered by none other than the Chairman of Fox News Roger Ailes. Soon after the meeting, Fox
News issued an official statement, "Kelly has acknowledged in recent interviews that Trump is a
fascinating person to cover and has electrified the Republican base." Shortly after the meeting with
Kelly, Ailes himself sat down with Trump in a sepearate meeting before releasing the

The Characters Of The Audience In Truman's The Truman Show
A narrative should feel real to an audience. Whether it be a book, TV, or film, we the audience
expect the characters and storyline to somehow depict our reality. To do this, films need to have
problems that the audience can relate to and must have characters that have similar characteristics
and backgrounds to the audience. If this can be achieved the audience's role of determining what is
realistic will be accomplished.
An audience wants to be invested and it is their role to be. They crave for the feeling of reality as it
takes their minds off their own problems. In order to make that work, new problems must be created
that are plausible to the viewer. By doing this, the audience is able to feel more involved when a
character is able to overcome something he/she has struggled for. These struggles can be as simple
as getting work done on time or paying bills. And being as hard as dealing with a serious injury or
even death. In The Truman Show, the audience is shown to be most involved when Truman faces a
problem in his enclosed life. These problems are relatable to the viewer because they are problems
that anyone in society could face unannounced. For example, Truman's struggle to find the truth is
what gets the audience in the film on their seats because everyone has searched for the truth to
something. We see people in the audience at work, but instead of doing their job, they are invested
in the character they have come to know and love. They feel down when he is hit by

The Value Of The Basketball Team
Breathing Success Without struggle and suffering there is no learning and understanding. I 've
learned the value of this teaching while spending time in high school. When I was in high school I
dreamt of playing with the best basketball players; however, I lacked the mobility due to my 240
pounds. Dragging my Flaming Hot Cheetos eating behind across the court, I pushed all the buttons I
could to drop the weight, in order for me to have the slightest chance of making the basketball team.
Each stride I took brought me closer and closer to my goal. Running off the Mochiko Chicken out of
my system, I still had problems dealing with my ego. As I gasped for air many doubts filled my
mind, but there was only one saying that I kept ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The combination of Thomas being a speaker, educator, and pastor also reveals his pedantic and
flamboyant tone that engages his audience. To motivate the younger generation college students
Thomas uses the ETA method. "The Estimated Time of Arrival" method (ETA) is to motivate and
inspire communities, organizations, and subgroups to grow ("About" Para 1). Growing not as one,
but as a "group" allows everyone to transcend to their highest potential. Battling through adversity is
a true testament of the physical, physiological, emotional, and spiritual ability of every individual.
Thomas emphasized true pain and adversity in the ending of his speech establishing his appeal to
ethos or credibility as he uses an anecdote. "I was homeless for two and a half years...and my
mother kicked me out as she said you have to grow up"("Motivational" 11:19). Speaking amongst
his personal story, he engages with his audience by saying that he was homeless. To connect and
engage with the audience, Thomas showed that at first hand he knows how it feels to be at the
bottom and struggle and in doing so allowed the audience to feel compassion and sympathy, but as
pain appeals to the audiences emotions, Thomas juxtaposes the appeal of Pathos or motion with his
appeal to Ethos and logos. "....it took me twelve years to get a four year degree but I got it and guess
what but on a degree it don't have dates."

The Symbolism Of Graphic Visuals
1. The topic chosen is topic number three. I chose this topic because of how important the use of
graphic visuals are to the story Satrapi is trying to tell. It draws the reader in an unusual way that a
standard novel draws its reader in. Normally, the reader visualizes what is happening in what they
are reading, but with this novel that is not required. Instead, it allows the reader as well as Satrapi to
focus on other important elements like her rhetoric. The logos is very prevalent through her writings.
For starters she uses historical events that took place during the time period to make her stories seem
more concrete and real. She also uses many relevant music stars during the time period to create that
connection with her audience.
2. This topic is worthy of analysis because her story is not told in a traditional way of just a book
and text on a page.
a) It is controversial because her novel is told in a perspective of first and third person with the
characters interacting with each other to communicate the story. Also, it is as previously noted a
graphic novel of a rather serious event and time period.
b) The fact that she connects with her audience and makes the visualization process of what she
went through easier to understand helps her rhetoric.
3. I have read to page 153 which would be the first part of the graphic novel. The general sense of
how effective Satrapi's rhetoric is so far would be she excels in all three areas. With her logos she

Thompson, in his chapter excerpt "Public Thinking," from the book Smarter Than You Think: How
Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the
development of technology of mass communication improves the user's writing and their ability to
collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the
production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader's emotions, experiments to support the
claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the

This is extremely relevant to the topic of the audience effect. This evidence is used to persuade us
that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire
world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He
argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more
efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly.
31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have
completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the
surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the
mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this
evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because
it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic of
interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before.
Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a great expression of feelings. One of
them is about the experiences of Ory Okolloh, a Kenyan law student studying in the United States,
blogging about the tragic current events of her home

Audience Theory Paper
Understanding how an audience receives information can be vital in the creation of a production.
One of the ways of testing how the audience receives information is through the audience theory.
With the audience theory, audiences can be separated into passive or active, a passive model
suggests the production has an effect on the audience while an active model suggests that the
audience interacts with the production to develop their own interpretation. The is one main
difference between the passive and active models. In the active model, audiences form opinions and
are therefore in control, while audiences in a passive audience only accept opinions and have little
control. Looking further into the audience theory there is the reception theory. ... Show more content

When there is too much blood used or the blood exits the body in an unrealistic way, the
believability of the scene is compromised and it creates a sense of "fakeness". This idea can also be
used in reverse to create "fakeness". This use of "fakeness" can be seen in the 2010 Rupert Goold
production of Macbeth. The images below show the aftermath of Macbeth's death.
These pictures show a decapitated Macbeth, with a clean cut severed head. The image, however,
does not accurately represent the decapitation of a head. In this scene, Macduff is wielding a small
dagger. According to Matthew Lawrence, a small sword would be very an ineffective way to
decapitate someone. This dagger (seen below left), although appearing quite sharp, is very small and
is not designed to cut through muscle or bone. The image on the right is a samurai sword which has

Education Is The First Thing That Can Help Us Improve Our...
The acquisition of knowledge is either specifically aimed at imparting a certain person or a general
audience. According to (Pritchard, 2010), knowledge refers to information concerning something,
which an individual acquires either through experience or undergoing a certain form of process
meant to impart information. We have to identify the presence of the propositional knowledge which
lay emphasis on things like the facts and figures that we know for example, I can speak English and
water is made up to the chemical structure H2O. And the ability knowledge which is just the know–
how, an example of this is I know how to drive a motor bike, but I still need to know the rules and
laws of driving (Pritchard, 2010).
Education is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about knowledge. The role of
education is to help us improve our knowledge and skills. I believe that we can pick up knowledge
from parents, mentors, school teachers and life experiences, for example, being a mother teaches
one to be more thoughtful and empathetic towards others. Knowledge is also imparted to us through
various means like, studying the theories of human behaviours I have gained a better understanding
of not just my behaviour but also the behaviour of others. Based on the teachings I have received in
school so far, I now know more about anti–oppressive practices, equality and the protected
characteristics of individuals. I also have a better understanding of social

Rhetorical Analysis Of Bill Clinton's Speech
In order to ensure her speech resonated in the mind of leaders from around the world, Clinton at
times uses and authoritative and urgent tone, while also utilizing techniques such as repetition. At
one point in her speech, Clinton's tone shifted as she became extremely passionate. She cried, "the
history of women has been a history of silence. Even today, there are those who are trying to silence
our words. But the voices of this conference and of the women at Huairou must be heard loudly and

Clinton takes a bold move to demand action from the leaders at the conference and in order to do
that she must shift her tone to represent the authority she wants to present. There is another time in
her speech where Clinton used an anaphora. Another point Clinton made sure to repeat is that
"families will flourish" (Clinton) when "women are healthy and educated", "full and equal partners
in society", and "free from violence" (Clinton). A major point in Clinton's speech was that in order
to help all people to succeed, women must first be allowed to succeed, and the people that will be
directly affected because of this success would be the families. Clinton understood that the well–
being of families is a point that would connect her audience because it is a topic that concerned most
people, so she made sure to repeat that phrase several times. The mention of families is so important
because even though there were so many people who opposed her speech, but they were also groups
that were concerned for the well being of families, so she was able to use families to unite even the
people who are against her. When looking at the diction of Clinton's speech, she uses three different

Analysis Of Edward Albee's The Sandbox
In Betty Keller's Tea Party, Alma, a seventy–five year old woman, and Hester Evans, a seventy–nine
year old woman are sisters that share a home together. In their old age and due to Hester being a
cripple, the Evans sisters are confined to their home almost all the time. The small amount of
excitement they do get, is from the neighborhood paperboy that they occasionally get to speak to. It
is made quite obvious at the beginning of the drama, that the two women are starved of attention and
company, it is made so obvious by their eagerness and restlessness about the fact that the paperboy
will be arriving soon. While Alama watches the boy make his way down the street the two try to
decide what story they tell the young lad when he arrives at their porch. While throwing out ideas
they argue about the details about the story and whether the story is appropriate for the young man
to hear. Unfortunately the paperboy must not have time for the old timers stories because as he
passes he throws the paper on the porch and continues on without checking with the Evans sisters
for collecting outgoing bills. So the Evans sisters are forced to wait for their next opportunity for
attention. In Edward Albee's The Sandbox the characters are to treat each other with dry and little
emotion as possible. The play itself is about the performance of a very poor play. The two
characters, Mommy and Daddy are bringing Grandma to peacefully pass away by a quiet beach
side. Throughout the play the

Mary Poppins Movement Analysis
The movement decisions made by the director were key to making audience members feel certain
and distinct emotions. The opening sequence of Mary Poppins shows a backdrop of the city of
London. As the credits scroll by, the camera pans from right to left on the backdrop until it zooms in
on Mary Poppins sitting on a cloud. This specific camera movement allows for the audience to make
an easily detectable assumption that this lady on the cloud will be important in the story of "Mary
Poppins". Another example of movement within the "Mary Poppins" film is the scene of the Banks
family flying their kite while at the park. This is an example of movement in that the director chose
to have an upward movement of the camera, from the Banks family and to the kite that is flying in
the sky. This decision on camera movement allows the audience to have a sense of hope for the
Banks family, individually and as whole family. A third example is when Mary, the children, and
Bert go and visit Uncle Albert at his home. Within these scenes, several reaction shots, low or high
angle shots, and close–ups cut back and forth from Uncle Albert laughing and tumbling in the air, to
the children laughing, to Bert trying to keep from laughing, and Mary admonishing them. A cut to a
long shot for reestablishing everyone's place in the room keeps viewers focused. Editing is the way
for the director to minimize the amount of distraction for the audience members, in order to allow
audiences to focus on

An important aspect of public speaking is appearing confident. Through my use of hand gestures
and eye contact, I feel I got sense of confidence across to the audience. By using appropriate
gestures that corresponded to the topic or sentence I was addressing, it made the speech feel more
active and less stagnant. In combination, by using eye contact and switching being the different
people in the audience, this was able to make everyone feel like I as truly addressing them. As a
result, the speech came across as a little more interesting and a little more engaging for the everyone
in the class.

Rhetorical Analysis Of Cesar Chavez Speech
Cesar Chavez Speech Rhetorical Analysis Cesar Chavez was a civil rights leader and a labor union
organizer who delivered a carefully crafted speech by acknowledging the perspective of his
audience in order to vouch for the use of nonviolence over violence. While Chavez is arguing
against the use of violence, he refrains from blaming anyone who had ever used violence. He
manages to gain the trust of the audience by presenting himself as an understanding and
compassionate individual, which allows them to be more receptive to his message. On the tenth
anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination, Chavez utilizes King's association with civil
rights in order to give foundation to his own words. Chavez knows the anniversary is "...the best
possible opportunity to recall the principles with which [their] struggle has grown and matured..."
(ln 5–7) because King has values regarding civil rights that are synonymous to his own. Both
Chavez and King possess the value that the human life is special and no one has the right to take it
away. By referring to a well–known, wildly respected, and successful leader with a similar cause,
Chavez has ensured that the audience will be receptive to his message that the use of nonviolence is
a better solution to a problem than violence. A later reference to Gandhi further strengthens this
effect. Chavez praises the effectiveness of a boycott, an act in which people forbid relations with a
group in order to achieve change, made popular by Gandhi. The allusion to commonly revered
supporters of the principles Chavez has built himself upon, gives him the credibility to gain the
attention of the audience. Acknowledging his consideration for both sides of the argument and
providing his definition of nonviolence allows Chavez's listeners to trust him because he has
carefully described his own ideas while also considering perspectives contradictory to his own.
Violence is described to result in "...many injuries and perhaps deaths on both sides..." as well as
"...total demoralization of the workers" (ln 19–21). Nonviolence is described as the opposite of
violence. Nonviolence will be there to "...[support] you if you have a just and moral cause" (ln 13–
14). Providing a clear

How Media Organizations Produce Audiences And Markets
This segment will review variety of literature exploring on how and why media organizations
produce audiences and markets. The different types of audience theories there are will explore this,
and how the audience reacts within these theories. There are many various audience theories out
there, however six will be explored.
"The word audience is so much part of our everyday talk that its complexity is often taken for
granted." (Ross & Nightingale 2003)
Today, media is surrounding us, whether it is television, films, magazines, games, radio, music, the
news, and even billboards and posters, and we don't even acknowledge it, unless it hits us in the
face. Along with this media, comes different audience, and different reactions. The ... Show more

Hall also suggested that the way an audience reacts, is dependant on their cultural backgrounds and
how they were brought up, for example, if the mass media's intended message is fruit is great, it all
depends if an individual has been brought up to dislike fruit, etc. the audience is also given more
credit, and it's understood that they mat react in different ways.
Reception theory is the social interaction aspect, and the Two–Step Flow theory is also similar.
"Formulated first in the The People's Choice, the hypothesis suggests that 'ideas often flow from
radio and print to the opinion leaders and from them to the less active sections of the population.'"
(Lazarfield and Katz, 1970)
Paul Felix Lazerfiled originally came up with this theory, and then later, Elihu Katz began working
with him. The two of them looked at during the presidential elections, how the votes make up the
audience's minds and wrote a book exploring the different factors of it. They speculated how the
mass media connects with people, however this communication is routed through opinion leaders.
These people are very media–literate and they link their understanding to others. The mass media
uses comedians as the opinion leaders, as they take real life news, and analyse it in a comical way,
and the mass media probably entrust the comedians more, as they come across less bias and less of
an agender, and the public find the news sometimes so bias, it was almost comical. Two–Step Flow
theory is

Analysis Of The Film Bears Discover Fire
The film Bears Discover Fire written by Terry Bisson is a film that was produced by college
students. This film covers many different controversial topics. The book allows for many different
perceptions of these topics to be seen.. Although the title of the film has a scientific feeling, it is
more of a fantasy than a science fiction film. In the film "Bears Discover fire" one may interpret the
movie as more of a fantasy film, with that being said the elements of a fantasy story base line can be
perceived in a much bigger picture. In the film "Bears Discover Fire" one may preserve the film as
fansty. In the film, there are parts of the story line that truly cannot happen during this time on earth.
For example, when the bears are standing upright. In this scene one may think to themselves that
this is something that can/ will not happen. Today's bears are not capable of standing upright and
walking. Another example of a fantasy can be seen when the bears are walking around with fire.
This scene shows signs of a fantasy because, a normal bear would not be capable of walking around
with fire in their paws and setting up campfires. A final example of a fantasy in the film can be seen
when, the grandma, Junior and Bobby are having a campfire with the bears in the woods. This is a
scene that one might fantasize over. That is because it is not normal for humans to be close to a live
bear and simple have a campfire with them. At this point a normal bear would have been frightened

Rhetorical Analysis : Inventing The University
The rhetorical situation is defined as the context of a rhetorical event that consists of an issue, an
audience, and a set of restraints. While this may be true, there are many interpretations and versions
of these situations. In David Bartholomae's text, "Inventing the University," he explains the situation
of college students learning to fit the requirements of their college professors. Another author named
Kevin Davis formulated an essay titled, "Does Coming to College Mean Becoming Someone New,"
explores a similar situation of university students in terms of their commitments and changes they
make to succeed in college. Bartholomae's rhetorical situation is persuading college professors to

This could easily be seen as a negligible problem, but the authors could feel otherwise. A question
that comes to mind when analyzing these writings is, "what kind of discourse does each writing
piece fall into?" Discourse can be separated into three categories. Which are judicial, deliberative,
and epideictic. Bartholomae uses epideictic discourse as well as deliberative discourse throughout
his writing. He says, "He has to invent the university by assembling and mimicking its language"
(45). Davis shares a similar concept as Bartholomae, by stating, "They wanted me to make their
sense of the literature, to understand the texts as they understood them...I also had to learn a
particular way of reading and writing" (80). Both men have the same idea with current academia,
but they are on opposite sides. Bartholomae believes that while writing in unfamiliar ways, students
learn to become expert writers with practice. Davis explains the same scenario but believes that
change isn't necessarily needed, and certain changes made by students could be devastating in their
lives. When analyzing the discourse made by these two authors, it is apparent that both Bartholomae
and Davis are speaking from an epideictic and deliberative standpoint. They speak on a current issue
that students are having and discuss ways to attack this problem in the future with examples. Since

the audience was prepared for these happenings.
The presentation of Othello in act III scene iii shows a pivotal change in his character persona. From
viewing the previous scenes, the audience would have likely perceived Othello as an honorable and
respectful man; however, with this scene we see his change in character occur so rapidly, that
previous scenes may not have prepared the audience of the extent of the transformation of his
character.
Right from Othello's entrance in the scene, we can already see the beginnings of what will be the
root cause of the change in Othello's character. Shakespeare makes the change in Othello's
presentation through the use of his other character, Iago. With Iago's cunning and sly words of
deceit, Othello slowly becomes more and more suspicious of Cassio and his relationship with his
wife, Desdemona. The choices of words in Iago's dialogue such as 'steal ... Show more content on

As Iago speaks his mind, Othello is likely to act in states of agony, shock and anger, followed by his
lines of grief such as "O misery!" (173). When Desdemona returns, Othello tells her he has a "pain
upon my forehead" (288), which the audience can interpret as Othello's stress and suspicious
thoughts eating away at him. When Othello returns to the stage once more, his dialogue focuses
solely on how he cannot stop thinking about Desdemona cuckolding him. It is clear with this
presentation, that he does truly love Desdemona as he bids goodbye to all his happiness with the
thought of her cheating on him, and with this, we can also see the presentation of Othello's

Instructions For Selecting Appropriate Words
Chapter 4 Summary
1. Selecting Appropriate Words
a. As you being to write a memo, letter, etc., it is important to reminder yourself who your audience
will be.
i. Use words that will be familiar to your audiences.
1. In order to communicate effectively to an audience, you should use words that the audience is
familiar with. ii. Aim to use short words.
1. In the book, Business Communication, authors Kathryn Rentz and Paula Lentz explain that,
"short words tend to be familiar words" and that the "heavy use of long words...creates an
impression of difficulty" even if the long words are understandable. (Rentz) iii. Use slang and
popular clichés with caution

Nike Vs. Under Armour
Nike and Under Armour are two of the biggest brands in the active wear industry. Fitness goers of
all ages and genders are passionate users of their sports gear and athletic clothes. Two print
advertisements from Under Armour and Nike will be analyzed based on the way they use goals to
captivate the viewers attention and elicit an emotion to persuade the viewer to buy their athletic
wear. In a world that is quickly becoming aware of its health problems consumers are becoming
more aware of fitness brands and their advertisements. People are taking an active stand in
achieving their fitness aspirations and doing so with the best equipment available. Nike's famous
"Just do it" slogan has been a boost for the company's reputation and notoriety, by setting it a part
from other brands. The two advertisements from Nike and Under Armour are representations of
current consumer ambitions towards fitness. Since their products promote the goal of having an
active and fit lifestyle it is clear that the advertisements are targeting young women who are
interested in getting involved in working out. The audience is young women due to the use of
women in the advertisements. It is easier for a viewer to feel connected to an image when they see
someone that is similar to them portraying their goals. If a viewer sees someone similar in age to
him or her trying to achieve the same goal they have, they will be more motivated to go after the
goal themselves. This is the way Nike and Under

The Wind in the Willows Essay
The Wind in the Willows
The Wind in the Willows (published in 1908) by Kenneth Grahame is a children's fictional novel set
in England during the early 20th century. This allegory from the stimulus booklet evokes feelings of
magic and adventure but also feelings of reflection as we relate the actions of Ratty, Mole and Toad
to our lives.Grahame evokes an imaginative journey within the mind of the reader as he questions
"Which journey's do we take that we really want to experience?" Kenneth Grahame conveys this
idea through Mole who is being forced to take Ratty's journey instead of his own. This text broadens
our understanding of the world today in that it helps us to undertsand the complex interactions
between people.

Camps, villages, town's cities". This vivid description of what he anticipates creates imagery in the
minds of the audience allowing them to enter the imaginative realm of Toads journey.
In this extract Kenneth Grahame creates exaggeration within the characters to effectively fuel the
imagination of the audience. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the
different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For
example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling
and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can
interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because
they are able to picture them in their imagination.
The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in
the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to
Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be
evoked in the audiences imagination.
'The Wind in the Willows' uses the technique of anthropomorphism. This feature is visually
appealing to the audience as the animals seem less threatening and it sends the reader into a fantasy
world full of magical and adventurous thoughts. The audience can effectively engage with the
human traits shown by the

Humans Have Been Known To Live Together In Packs, As Part
Humans have been known to live together in packs, as part of a much larger society. Whether it is on
a personal level or by a simple wave to a next door neighbor, the social interactions permitted
through this lifestyle plays an important role in keeping individuals sane and is necessary for their
survival. This is evident in the movie, I Am Legend. The film is based on a novel written by Richard
Matheson in 1954 as a cross between horror and science fiction. It was later remade into a movie, in
2007, by multi–award winning, Hollywood director Francis Lawrence. The movie follows the
protagonist, Robert Neville, through his journey as one of the few remaining survivors on Earth,

These small, but key judgments help to set the mood of terror for the film, thus also impacting
Lawrence's credibility as a director positively. Lawrence's expertise in the realm of movie making
has also given him an eye for creativity and design, thus appealing to ethos. The way he portrays
these antagonists reinforces the appeal of pathos. His vision of the monsters in the film was
particularly human–like. The resemblance helps to induce fear into the audience, as it seems
plausible to happen to them. As they are portrayed, these darkseekers hold the same levels of
intelligence as any ordinary humans. This is evident when they used the same tactics Neville had
used to capture one of their own, on him, causing him to be tied upside down by the foot. They also
have a beating heart and emotions, much like any living thing. However, these creatures resulted
from a defect of a cancer cure, where millions of individuals died or were transformed into
incurable, horrid mutants. In depicting the spread of the virus this way, the author creates an image,
not too far from reality. With all the research being done in the medical field, there have been many
controversies over the risks of what may happen in the future if mankind continues to tampers with
nature. For this reason, the movie touches upon the fear by

Seasons Of Love : The Theme Of Love And Rent
Most of us faintly remember fables, songs, and even movies that entailed important life lessons that
we use throughout life, such as The Three Little Pigs, Romeo and Juliet, and even The Wizard of
Oz. Retelling the summary is the easy part; but what about the message the author is trying to
convey? Luckily, Broadway has found a solution to this, as well as broadening the audience of
interest by diversifying the cast, and "compromising" the script of these original pieces so more of
America can relate. Stories told from a new, contemporary, perspective can motivate new and
diverse audiences to understand lessons to stories they always overlooked, ultimately changing their
entire perspective on life.
One Broadway musical that swept the stage with attention was Rent. Rent takes place in the East
Village of New York City from the late 1980's to the early 1990's. Rent targets a more pensive topic:
HIV/AIDS. The story efficiently depicts the hardships of poverty, drug abuse, and financial struggle
from the perspective of people who were HIV/AIDS positive back when scientists didn't know
much about the stigma or how to treat it. In the film, the song, Seasons of Love, was performed.
"How do you measure, measure a year"(Seasons of Love; Rent) was the question highlighted in the
entire song. The purpose of the song was to help a specific audience cope with the inevitable by
emphasizing the fact that the span of a life isn't measured by the physical sense, more so the
memories and

Essay Suspense in "The Most Dangerous Game"
Suspense, used to change the story
drastically, prevents "The Most Dangerous Game,"
from seeming too predictable and boring. Author,
Richard Connoll, creates suspense by
conveying unsettling emotions that the audience can
relate to and that give a false sense
of predictability. The title of this story, a major
factor of suspense, tells the audience
exactly what will happen. The interior suspense
gives hidden meaning to the title and
adds many twists to its foreboding plot. The
element of suspense, leaving audiences
guessing about future events, allows the audience
to get emotionally involved in the story
line. In essence, Richard Connoll does not
disappoint readers by deviating from the

now"(212). Zaroff's satisfaction releases both
Rainsford from the hunt (yet again) and the
audience from the momentary suspense while keeping
them entangled in the overall plot. The plot
continues deepening as Rainsford faces more danger
when Ivan and Zaroff hunt him with an entire pack
of dogs. Again, Rainsford escapes by using his wits
and constructing a trap that kills Ivan. As each
successive event becomes more and more dangerous it
leaves the audience feeling as if nothing could top
the previous scene. Connoll does top all of his
previous scenes by concluding with the ultimate
ending; he allows the readers to make their own
ending. This keeps the story forever alive by never
actually ending the story, the perfect permanent
suspense.
Throughout the story, Connell's masterful use of
suspense keeps the audience guessing until far
beyond the end. Such creative writing stirs the
desire for more, keeping the audience hooked until
the exhilarating finish. Connell's "The Most
Dangerous Game" conveys a prime example of
suspense. It also begs the question, what is
civilization? Rainsford enjoys hunting so his peers
consider him primitive and Zaroff is seen as
civilized. This only shows that civilization is a
perception made from details that are fed to us by
the person being judged. A person's true character
is on the inside, as shown in this

The Rhetorical Analysis Of A Gun Control Advertisement
Slide 1:
For my rhetoric situation project, I chose an ad that I found interesting. This ad is a gun control
advertisement. It sparked an interest of mine because it has to do with one of the Constitutional
rights, our 2nd Amendment which is the right to bear arms. This ad is wanting to put at the very
least some more control on guns and that's challenging the lines of the Constitution which sparked
my interests.
Slide 2:
The advertisement I ended up choosing is one done by "MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN
SENSE IN AMERICA" because it really does challenge some of the things our government has
done. Think about it, as the ad states, "One child is holding something that's been banned in America
to protect them" and "We ban the game dodgeball because it's viewed as being too violent. Why not
an assault weapon?" which is a valid point. The government will not allow dodgeball to be played in
the public school system because it caused many injuries but aren't assault weapons doing the same?
The other way to look at this is through the Constitution though, because it grants United States
citizens the right to bear arms so if we take away certain arms, couldn't this eventually lead to all
arms being taken away? All guns are capable of killing or badly injuring someone and a person
which makes all guns dangerous. It's against the Constitution to take all guns away so it's really a
controversial ad.
Slide 3:
However, this ad argues against guns so that's what we are going to be talking

Analysis Of The Article ' Epigenetics And Human Disease '
Introduction
How is it that two identical twins with the exact same DNA and the same environment can be very
different? (Coutney Griffin 2012) Cortney Griffin elaborated on how her journey of having twins
lead her to a deeper understanding of what epigenetics truly is. This talk, although vastly viewed in
biochemistry classes including at the University of Texas of El Paso, differs from the scholarly
article "Epigenetics and human disease: translating basic biology into clinical applications" by
David Rodenhiser and Mellissa Mann. Their most prominent similarities and differences can be
separated into audience and purpose, rhetorical appeals, and structure and delivery.
Summary of Speech Courtney Griffin begins her speech by saying that nine years ago, she was told
that she was going to have twins. This got her interested in how much of people's mental health and
physical health has to do with nature and nurture. She took the stage to describe her journey at
TEDX OU, is an independently Organized TED event at the University of Oklahoma. She had been
trained as a geneticist. She was not expecting twins so she joked, what would happen if she put one
kid in daycare and one kid in a drawer. This got her interested in epigenetics. Even though twins
could have identical DNA and grow up relatively the same they are radically different people, to the
point that there are health differences between the children. When DNA gets wrapped to fit into the
nucleolus, some parts are able to

Sweeney Todd Summary
I. Intro.
The play Sweeney Todd has been performed on numerous stages since 1979. The 1982 version of
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, was directed by Harold Prince. Unfortunately, I
watched a recoded production of the play; the recoding took place in 1982 but was based off the
1979 production. Over all my impression of Sweeney Todd, is that the play has a bitter–sweet tone
that supports all the killing, lying, and deceiving that goes on in the play just so that Sweeney Todd
could get his so called revenge.
II. Body Paragraph 1:
a. The scene that has interesting scenery would be one hour and twenty–two minutes into the
recorded production. The scene is of Mrs. Lovett's restaurant; her restaurant is packed with people
as Toby serves the guest meat pies. Mrs. Lovett's restaurant has an antique look to it. She has a
wooden wall that has a faded green color painted on it; against the while is a chest, poster, and a
door. Mrs. Lovett, herself standing next to a white bar like table, it is very high. She also has a barrel
being supported by some type of stand in her restaurant. Next to the platform that her restaurant is
set up on is a table were her customers sit and eat he meat pies.
b. The scenery in this moment did provide a sense of location. Based off how the scene was set up
anyone in the audience would've been able to known that the current location of the play was Mrs.
Lovett's shop.

Comparing the Shower Scene from Psycho with the Boat Scene...
Comparing the Shower Scene from Psycho with the Boat Scene from Jaws
I have chosen the second question 'compare the famous shower scene from Psycho with the boat
scene from Jaws. How do the directors build up tension here?' I am going to compare various things
such as camera angles/shots, music, lightning, long and short edits, dramatic irony and sound.
Jaws is a film about 3 brave men set out to kill a man eating shark who seems to be unconquerable
as it has killed a lot of people in the past, the attacks he has made look horrifying and the men set
out to kill it look like they have very little chance. They use a small boat as they hunt for the shark,
the boat is small and the shark knows what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After a frightening scene it plays relaxing music and now the audience are relaxed and therefore
don't expect the next scene which is the boat scene to be frightening. But it is and the audience will
be scared as the shark attacks. The music that gives you a clue that the shark is coming can be very
nerve racking as you don't know when it is going to attack the boat, while the men are having fun.
Psycho music is very different; it is more expecting for the audience because the music is very high
pitched. The director has used the obvious choice of music, but has picked very chilling music and
makes the audience tense. During the shower scene the music is played and you feel it as the mother
is killing the victim. It has the killing effect and after the music it stays in your head until the next
scene as you don't want it to be played again.
The boat scene is very different to the shower scene, but they both build up a lot of tension. The
Jaws boat scene builds up its tension by focusing around the boat and the men. The audience will
feel a bit jumpy as they don't expect the shark coming, but the tension created has to end, it is the
tension that makes you scared.
Psycho shower scene builds up tension by focusing on the girl non stop for a little while, and it
shows you the girl getting in the shower, now you expect that something sinister will happen
because at the beginning of

The Perception Of Self Awareness
In America, our self–image is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of our daily lives. In
an ever–changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of which we believe the world sees
us. But is this true of all people? Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people
can easily be detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta &
Henrich, 2008). Perception, especially self–perception, can vary vastly from one culture to another.
One perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that East Asian's attempt to place their
concern with self–concept in the hands of the people around them, as opposed to some other
cultures that can be found to focus more prominently on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study focused on two cultures from different continents, and in virtually entirely different
worlds. In the experiment, the objective self–awareness of both Japanese and Americans were
tested. East Asians not only find it more important to focus on their audience, but they value the
view of the audience about themselves more than they value their own view of themselves (Heine et
al, 2008). This aspect of the Japanese leads to a more profound skill set when dealing with others
around them. The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience
will notice the sound of their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of
attention in the third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an audience member,
rather than their own. People of an East Asian culture were also found to out preform Westerners in
a task that measured perspective–taking. Previous studies showed that Japanese people and
Westerners do not process self–awareness the same. Because of this excessive amount of
information provided about cultural differences in self–awareness, it was appropriate to be tested.
"Since it was found through research that East Asians focus more heavily on their audience's view of
them, in turn, they should be more influenced by the way they believe others see them. (Hein et al,
2008)". The participants of the study included American/Canadian students and Japanese

Margaret Atwood and Anwar Sadat Speeches Essay
What makes the selected speeches worthy of critical study? Margaret Atwood's Spotty–Handed
Villainesses (1994) and Anwar Sadat's Statement to the Knesset (1977) are both speeches worthy of
critical study because of their fascinating ideas and values. "There was a little girl Who had a little

she was bad, she was horrid!" Atwood begins her speech with an anecdote and quotes this famous

Atwood's speech raised some important issues in the era following a strong feminist push. She was
able to find a balance between support for the Women's Movement whilst criticising it for its
excesses. As a result of this mature stance, her speech was respected by many for addressing the
important issue of women in society, and doing it in an entertaining manner. Atwood was influential
during the feminist movement which began in the 60s and her influence is shown through her
literary works. Her speech raises the issue of the role that women should take in society looking at it
through the portrayal of women in literature. Atwood's historical and literary references allow her to
validate her points and to explore the role of women and how they are portrayed in literature (good
and bad). The audience can easily identify with them – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White,
Lady Macbeth. Atwood supports her ideas with language techniques and features making her speech
worthy of critical study. Great speeches combine language techniques and features with structure to
reveal and emphasis their key points. One of Sadat's most memorable themes in his Statement to the
Knesset is the value of "permanent peace based on justice". The repetition of this phrase emphasises
the point and makes sure the audience will remember it. Sadat uses enumeration to structure his
arguments "the fist fact", "the fifth

Theories on Audience Activity Essay
Audience activity was first noted in the 1960's with Stuart Hall's theory of encoding/ decoding.
Before this theory, effects studies were carried out and 'was dominated by a 'hypodermic model of
influence' (Curran 1990: 506), thus audience activity emerged from this. Hall's theory led to studies
being created by the likes of Morley (1981) the nationwide audience and Ang (1983) which led to
some of Hall's findings being confirmed but there also being differences. Stuart Hall's theory of
encoding/ decoding is where the notion of audience activity begins, he tried to account for active
consumption also (Moores 1993). The encoding part of Hall's theory (producing the media) was
done by an individual but the messages 'have a complex structure ... Show more content on

These studies also look at the way advertisements leak into certain programmes, 'although this
makes some form of engagement with consumer products unavoidable, the audience has not been
rendered passive' (Stevenson 2002:76). The second type of study is to learn who watches certain
programmes but Ang states there is little research on the context or the meaning constructed from
this programme, 'the second form of research focuses on offered interpretations and the social
relations of reception' (Stevenson 2002:76). What is clear from these two studies is that both assume
there is some kind of audience activity. Studies assume audiences interpret or receive certain things,
which mean the audience is active in some way. There are not actually any studies on audience
activity it is assumed, not taking into account that messages may be sent to a viewer in an imperfect
way such as the phone ringing in the middle of a programme or channel flicking. Morley (1980)
produced an empirical study on the programme Nationwide. Nationwide addressed audiences as
individuals living in a certain community, different to how other programmes would address the
audience. The aim of Morley's study was to see whether different decoding techniques meant the
preferred reading could be resisted by the culturally coded reading techniques, 'nationwide does not

Toni Morrison Analysis Essay
For centuries, poetry has remained an effective method of expressing ones' emotions and aesthetics
without excessive criticism. Some distinguished individuals participated in this literary exercise and
despite their motives, they acquired the profound ability to empathize with their audiences'
ambitions, fears, and misfortunes. During the lamentable times of racial and economic turmoil, a
brilliant woman named Toni Morrison was introduced into this world and would later be a
remarkable influence on literature. Proactively, she channeled her frustrations and fears of racial
prejudice into her literary works, earning an admirable reputation for her bravery of discussing
sensitive topics regarding racial prejudice and injustices. Likewise, ... Show more content on

For instance, Morrison elaborates on the adjective "unbidden" (Morrison, line 6) by including a
simile, "Like the turn of sun through hills" (Morrison, line 7) as a result not only does she clarify her
adjectives, but she also establishes a spontaneous and jovial tone she maintains throughout the
poem. Although Morrison is aware of life's relentless issues that ultimately prevent this illustration
from being possible, she subtly encourages her audience to aspire to establish a similar mindset.
Correspondingly, Morrison explores the latter aspect of her theme in her poem "Someone Leans
Near" In contrast to "It Comes Unadorned", "Someone Leans Near" is significantly more somber as
it likely depicts one's fearful moments prior to their death. Morrison establishes a distressed tone as
she begins her poem, illustrating the protagonist as despondent from experiencing something ghastly
as well as a supernatural entity which correlates with the "Someone" mentioned in the title.
Unfortunately, the poem does not explicitly mention the living status of the protagonist or whether
or not the entity is a figment of the protagonist's imagination. The protagonist is portrayed as
depressed and lonely, shedding "salt [from their] eyes" (Morrison, line 2) desperately in need of
"words of reason, love or play" (Morrison, line 4) In addition, the pessimistic allegories further
establish the protagonist as distant, and the audience can empathize with the protagonist's

Technology And Technology
We live in a time where when an adolescent complains about a headache or some kind of pain, an
adult's first response is, "It's because you're always on that phone!". It's a common belief that
technology, such as social media and the internet, is corrupting the youth and making us less
productive. Clive Thompson, in the excerpt of his book, "Smarter Than You Think: How
Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better", asserts that the internet has had a positive effect
not only on the quality of our writing but also on the quantity of writing in our time. Thompson
supports his argument by first sharing historical evidence, then by analyzing statistics about the
effects the internet has had on our writing, and finally, he describes personal anecdotes and expert
testimonies to establish his credibility. The author's purpose is to persuade the audience so that they
believe the internet has had a significant impact on the way individuals express themselves through
their writing. Although Thompson uses several rhetorical strategies that helped support his
argument, there were also moments when his strategy worked against his claim. The author writes in
an informative tone to his audience, the readers of his book and others interested in the topic of
science and technology, and its effect on our times. The popular assumption is that technology has
had a negative effect on society, by making individuals "dumb", "lazy", and "illiterate". On the
contrary, I believe social media, and

The World Is Not Falling Apart By Steven Pinker And Andrew...
The article, The World Is Not Falling Apart by Steven Pinker and Andrew Mack published by Slate,
reminds the world not to focus on the media's perception of our corrupt world, but rather look
closely and evaluate what true measures of violence unfolding each day. Humans' perception of the
world is based off of the media, which states the earth is in a process of deteriorating. However, if
one focuses on the trend lines instead of the headline, one would figure out that the world has never
been in such a peaceful era. In the article Bill Clinton was recorded stating to "follow the trend lines,
not the headlines", this means to take breakdown what information is being presented to the world
each day and simplify it to our own judgments. This article is intended to suggest that people need
to wake up from their lethargic routines, and not rely on unreliable sources that only concentrate on
the major crimes, not the repetitive ones. Instead of focusing on the dramatic violence the media
presents, turn focus on the amount of violence in the world, not the magnitude of the crime. Trend

the trend lines of crimes like homicides, rapes, and shooting in the US are on a downwards slope.

and relate to the needs of the audience. Generally these types of advertisements draw the audience's
attention instantly because of the exceptional use of persuasion and visual presentation. The
combination of some of these techniques can be very appealing hence this is why in today's society
advertising is one of the reasons that influence people's choices when it comes to what they buy. The
two advertisements to be analysed include Streets Magnum by Unilever and Natural Foods by
Nestle Professionals. Although the two food advertisements appeal to different audiences they both
use techniques such as images, colour and written text.
The Streets Magnum advertisement was obtained from a Woman's Weekly Magazine published in
2009 that was primarily targeted at women aged between 30 and 45. The Women's Weekly is a very
popular Australian magazine filled with fashion tips, real life stories, recipes and health advice
hence, its target audience would certainly be reached. The Streets Magnum advertisement would
appeal to individuals who love chocolate and ice cream who also value and enjoy the moment of
consumption. Conversely, the Natural Foods advertisement by Nestle Professionals was found from
an organic food magazine that was published in 2010. The magazine may appeal to people

The Negative Effects Of Technology On Society

  • 1. The Negative Effects Of Technology On Society Technology is something that shapes our society to be what it is today. Much of it consists of things we use in our everyday lives such as cell phones, internet, etc. People don't even think twice about using these things because they come so natural to us now. Many years ago, people probably couldn't even imagine that most of these things could actually be possible. Technology is arguably the main factor that has changed society, however, the main debate is whether or not these changes are actually advantageous. Roxanna Henke and Stephen Colbert are two people who have made an effort to try to prove the negative effects of technology. Their audiences may choose to accept or reject the ideas, so it's key for both of them to use rhetorical devices that can effectively get people to agree with them. The question is, who can better convey their notions to the audience? If we closely analyze both of their efforts to persuade, It's evident that Stephen Colbert does a better job. In the text "Not So Social Media," Roxanne Henke gives her view on the way that social media is affecting behavior of people in real life social environments. It's obvious that many people today use social media; Some would say that people use it too much. According to Manuel Castells in the article "The Impact of Internet on Society: A Global Perspective," the number of social media users reached 1 billion by 2010, and has gone up drastically every year since. Henke uses personal experiences and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Female Body Image : Women 's Bodies And The Diary Of... The group presentation topic that Missy, Alli, and I decided to work on was Body Image. Particularly the female body image portrayed in media and how it can affect young girls and women alike. The materials we've chosen so far are a speech given by Jennifer Aniston on women's bodies and The diary of Anne Frank. We have also chosen People magazine, because of their "tips and tricks" for weight loss and makeup, plus our own experiences as women(People). They are easily alike in the matter that they all deal with women and how they have grown up over time each showcasing body image issues. However, they differ not only in time range but also with how these examples showcase body image. The magazines portray body image as a source of power and something everyone should aspire to gain. Jennifer although talking about hardships bring into light that Hollywood has one specific standard of beauty(Anniston). When Anne Frank I believe has the most realistic portrayal of a female teenager dealing with body image from our sources, because looking at the book when she was even in the camp Anne would still have moments of insecurity while she faces near death(Frank). Obviously personal experience for all three of us helped a lot too. When dealing with word choice for the script and from the materials, and overall topic we decided as a group to show body image as a problem but keep it light hearted. The materials we found towards this topic all showed how a woman young or old, and rich ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Television Show South Park The difference between the intended meaning of media texts and what the audience actually perceives can be shockingly different. Producers of media can do everything possible to force audiences to experience their work in the way they want them to, but in the end they still take away many different meanings even within the same audience. Stuart Hall outlines this in his encoding and decoding model. One of the most apparent examples of this is the television show South Park. The television show South Park is a media text with the producers' preferred meaning of being decoded as joke or as being satire, but many audience members take an oppositional stance of taking it seriously. This is clear from the examples of controversy when South Park aired episodes focused on Scientology, red–headed people, and Islam. Through these examples it is demonstrated that the producers of media have less power compared to the audience in determining the meaning of media. In Hall's encoding and decoding model he argues that encoding and decoding the meaning of media is not a single–sided process but one shared by both the producers and the audience. The producers encode their preferred meaning into the media using frameworks of knowledge, relations of production, and technical infrastructure (Hall, 1997). Frameworks of knowledge are the producers' beliefs and what they assume about the audience's beliefs. Relations of production are the needs of the financial side of the industry. Technical ... • 7. The Perception Of Self Awareness In America, our self–image undoubtedly plays a significant role in our daily lives. In an ever– changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of which we believe the world sees us. But is this true of all people? "Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people can easily be detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta & Henrich, 2008)." Perception, especially self–perception, can vary vastly from one culture to another. One perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that "East Asian's attempt to place their concern with self–concept in the hands of the people around them, as opposed to some other cultures that can be found to focus more prominently on individualism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Our positive feelings of ourselves may decrease because we realize we have fallen short of the standards that we try to live by and we immediately take action to work within those standards. However, action when in a state of self–awareness may vary across cultures. Since self–awareness can deviate among cultures, it may alter our perception of the way we believe the world sees us. There have been experiments on self–awareness that have measured cross cultural differences but one in particular studied cultures from both individualistic and collectivist cultures. The study focused on two cultures from different continents, and in virtually entirely different worlds. In the experiment, the objective self–awareness of both Japanese and Americans were tested. East Asians not only find it more important to focus on their audience, but they value the view of the audience about themselves more than they value their own view of themselves (Heine et al, 2008). This aspect of the Japanese leads to a more profound skill set when dealing with others around them. "The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience will notice the sound of their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of attention in the third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an audience member, rather than their own. • 9. The Four Theories Of Passive Audience Theory Active Audience Theory Four theorists are the contributing authors of the active research theory. These authors evolved the role audience play and their ability to actively engage with communication medians. The idea of deconstructionism was the focus of the work of Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault during the 1960's. Later in the twentieth century theorist Raymond Bauer developed The Obstinate Audience. In the early 1980's a theorist by the name of Stuart Hall challenged the traditional theories of an audience role in the media and developed his encoding/decoding theory. Each contributed to the current understanding of the active role audiences engage in when information is presented. In this section a brief description of the earlier theory of the audiences as passive viewers will be presented to provide a background of the role of the audience. Next, the major theorist and their contributions to the active audience theory will be presented. The section will end with a summary of active research theory and its contribution to communication medians today. Passive Audience Theory During the early 1900's audiences were considered to be passive, an audience that merely observed events rather than actively responding to the event in the media. During this time, several theories were developed on the media's ability to provide information to a group of people that did not think about the information just simply receive the information. • 11. Militarism Vs. Trump Introduction Following a decisive victory against Ted Cruz in the Indiana primaries, reality TV star and real estates moghul Donald J Trump has secured his position as the presumptive republican nominee. In his last white house correspondence dinner, Obama jokingly criticized the media for putting excessive focus on Trump. According to Nick Timiraos' (2016) article published in the Wall Street Journal, Obama said, "I want to show some restraint because I think we can all agree from the start he's gotten the appropriate amount of coverage befitting the seriousness of his candidacy. The guy just wanted to give his hotel business a boost, and now we are all praying that Cleveland makes it through July." Those who intially dismissed Trump's ... Without the presence of Donald J Trum, the Fox News debate immediately took a big hit in the ratings. And within a few short months, Megyn Kelly had to schedule a meeting with Donald Trump at Trump Tower to "clear the air". The meeting was brokered by none other than the Chairman of Fox News Roger Ailes. Soon after the meeting, Fox News issued an official statement, "Kelly has acknowledged in recent interviews that Trump is a fascinating person to cover and has electrified the Republican base." • 13. The Characters Of The Audience In Truman's The Truman Show A narrative should feel real to an audience. Whether it be a book, TV, or film, we the audience expect the characters and storyline to somehow depict our reality. To do this, films need to have problems that the audience can relate to and must have characters that have similar characteristics and backgrounds to the audience. If this can be achieved the audience's role of determining what is realistic will be accomplished. An audience wants to be invested and it is their role to be. They crave for the feeling of reality as it takes their minds off their own problems. In order to make that work, new problems must be created that are plausible to the viewer. By doing this, the audience is able to feel more involved when a character is able to overcome something he/she has struggled for. These struggles can be as simple as getting work done on time or paying bills. And being as hard as dealing with a serious injury or even death. In The Truman Show, the audience is shown to be most involved when Truman faces a problem in his enclosed life. These problems are relatable to the viewer because they are problems that anyone in society could face unannounced. For example, Truman's struggle to find the truth is what gets the audience in the film on their seats because everyone has searched for the truth to something. We see people in the audience at work, but instead of doing their job, they are invested in the character they have come to know and love. They feel down when he is hit by ... I 've learned the value of this teaching while spending time in high school. When I was in high school I dreamt of playing with the best basketball players; however, I lacked the mobility due to my 240 pounds. Dragging my Flaming Hot Cheetos eating behind across the court, I pushed all the buttons I could to drop the weight, in order for me to have the slightest chance of making the basketball team. Each stride I took brought me closer and closer to my goal. Running off the Mochiko Chicken out of my system, I still had problems dealing with my ego. "The Estimated Time of Arrival" method (ETA) is to motivate and inspire communities, organizations, and subgroups to grow ("About" Para 1). Growing not as one, but as a "group" allows everyone to transcend to their highest potential. Battling through adversity is a true testament of the physical, physiological, emotional, and spiritual ability of every individual. Thomas emphasized true pain and adversity in the ending of his speech establishing his appeal to ethos or credibility as he uses an anecdote. "I was homeless for two and a half years...and my mother kicked me out as she said you have to grow up"("Motivational" 11:19). Speaking amongst his personal story, he engages with his audience by saying that he was homeless. To connect and engage with the audience, Thomas showed that at first hand he knows how it feels to be at the bottom and struggle and in doing so allowed the audience to feel compassion and sympathy, but as pain appeals to the audiences emotions, Thomas juxtaposes the appeal of Pathos or motion with his appeal to Ethos and logos. "....it took me twelve years to get a four year degree but I got it and guess what but on a degree it don't have dates." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Symbolism Of Graphic Visuals 1. The topic chosen is topic number three. I chose this topic because of how important the use of graphic visuals are to the story Satrapi is trying to tell. It draws the reader in an unusual way that a standard novel draws its reader in. Normally, the reader visualizes what is happening in what they are reading, but with this novel that is not required. Instead, it allows the reader as well as Satrapi to focus on other important elements like her rhetoric. The logos is very prevalent through her writings. For starters she uses historical events that took place during the time period to make her stories seem more concrete and real. She also uses many relevant music stars during the time period to create that connection with her audience. 2. This topic is worthy of analysis because her story is not told in a traditional way of just a book and text on a page. a) It is controversial because her novel is told in a perspective of first and third person with the characters interacting with each other to communicate the story. Also, it is as previously noted a graphic novel of a rather serious event and time period. b) The fact that she connects with her audience and makes the visualization process of what she went through easier to understand helps her rhetoric. 3. I have read to page 153 which would be the first part of the graphic novel. The general sense of how effective Satrapi's rhetoric is so far would be she excels in all three areas. With her logos she uses historical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hiebert RWS 100–07 10 September 2014 Thompson Essay Clive Thompson, in his chapter excerpt "Public Thinking," from the book Smarter Than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds For the Better published by Penguin Group, argues that the development of technology of mass communication improves the user's writing and their ability to collaborate. To support his argument, he incorporates statistics to show the enormity of the production of writing, anecdotes to connect with the reader's emotions, experiments to support the claim that people perform better in front of an audience, Stanford Study of Writing to support the claim that students are writing more than before and history to debate how the ... This evidence is used to persuade us that the audience effect does exist for the better, just like when an author posts a blog for the entire world to view. Thompson used a survey of mathematicians about the question of multiples. He argues that with more communication, we can use better teamwork to discover solutions more efficiently. The respondents were asked if they did the same work as another person unknowingly. 31% agreed to this statement and noted that if they worked together, they think they would have completed the task more efficiently. I question its credibility because of the anonymity of the surveyors and the ambiguity of the methods. However, I find the opinions shared by the mathematicians very valuable because they are one of the best at what they do. I do find this evidence sufficient because professionals were interviewed. Thompson includes this survey because it clearly supports his claim. I find this extremely relevant to because it is about the topic of interconnections and can be strongly, positively correlated to the lack of communication before. Thompson uses anecdotes that are easily relatable and have a great expression of feelings. • 21. Audience Theory Paper Understanding how an audience receives information can be vital in the creation of a production. One of the ways of testing how the audience receives information is through the audience theory. With the audience theory, audiences can be separated into passive or active, a passive model suggests the production has an effect on the audience while an active model suggests that the audience interacts with the production to develop their own interpretation. The is one main difference between the passive and active models. In the active model, audiences form opinions and are therefore in control, while audiences in a passive audience only accept opinions and have little control. Looking further into the audience theory there is the reception theory. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These pictures show a decapitated Macbeth, with a clean cut severed head. The image, however, does not accurately represent the decapitation of a head. In this scene, Macduff is wielding a small dagger. According to Matthew Lawrence, a small sword would be very an ineffective way to decapitate someone. • 23. Education Is The First Thing That Can Help Us Improve Our... The acquisition of knowledge is either specifically aimed at imparting a certain person or a general audience. According to (Pritchard, 2010), knowledge refers to information concerning something, which an individual acquires either through experience or undergoing a certain form of process meant to impart information. We have to identify the presence of the propositional knowledge which lay emphasis on things like the facts and figures that we know for example, I can speak English and water is made up to the chemical structure H2O. And the ability knowledge which is just the know– how, an example of this is I know how to drive a motor bike, but I still need to know the rules and laws of driving (Pritchard, 2010). Education is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about knowledge. The role of education is to help us improve our knowledge and skills. I believe that we can pick up knowledge from parents, mentors, school teachers and life experiences, for example, being a mother teaches one to be more thoughtful and empathetic towards others. Knowledge is also imparted to us through various means like, studying the theories of human behaviours I have gained a better understanding of not just my behaviour but also the behaviour of others. Based on the teachings I have received in school so far, I now know more about anti–oppressive practices, equality and the protected characteristics of individuals. Even today, there are those who are trying to silence our words. But the voices of this conference and of the women at Huairou must be heard loudly and clearly: It is a violation of human rights when babies are denied food, or drowned, or suffocated, or their spines broken, simply because they are born girls. Clinton takes a bold move to demand action from the leaders at the conference and in order to do that she must shift her tone to represent the authority she wants to present. There is another time in her speech where Clinton used an anaphora. Another point Clinton made sure to repeat is that "families will flourish" (Clinton) when "women are healthy and educated", "full and equal partners in society", and "free from violence" (Clinton). A major point in Clinton's speech was that in order to help all people to succeed, women must first be allowed to succeed, and the people that will be directly affected because of this success would be the families. Clinton understood that the well– being of families is a point that would connect her audience because it is a topic that concerned most people, so she made sure to repeat that phrase several times. The mention of families is so important because even though there were so many people who opposed her speech, but they were also groups that were concerned for the well being of families, so she was able to use families to unite even the people who are against her. Analysis Of Edward Albee's The Sandbox In Betty Keller's Tea Party, Alma, a seventy–five year old woman, and Hester Evans, a seventy–nine year old woman are sisters that share a home together. In their old age and due to Hester being a cripple, the Evans sisters are confined to their home almost all the time. The small amount of excitement they do get, is from the neighborhood paperboy that they occasionally get to speak to. It is made quite obvious at the beginning of the drama, that the two women are starved of attention and company, it is made so obvious by their eagerness and restlessness about the fact that the paperboy will be arriving soon. While Alama watches the boy make his way down the street the two try to decide what story they tell the young lad when he arrives at their porch. While throwing out ideas they argue about the details about the story and whether the story is appropriate for the young man to hear. Unfortunately the paperboy must not have time for the old timers stories because as he passes he throws the paper on the porch and continues on without checking with the Evans sisters for collecting outgoing bills. So the Evans sisters are forced to wait for their next opportunity for attention. In Edward Albee's The Sandbox the characters are to treat each other with dry and little emotion as possible. The play itself is about the performance of a very poor play. The two characters, Mommy and Daddy are bringing Grandma to peacefully pass away by a quiet beach side. Throughout the play the ... The opening sequence of Mary Poppins shows a backdrop of the city of London. As the credits scroll by, the camera pans from right to left on the backdrop until it zooms in on Mary Poppins sitting on a cloud. This specific camera movement allows for the audience to make an easily detectable assumption that this lady on the cloud will be important in the story of "Mary Poppins". Another example of movement within the "Mary Poppins" film is the scene of the Banks family flying their kite while at the park. This is an example of movement in that the director chose to have an upward movement of the camera, from the Banks family and to the kite that is flying in the sky. This decision on camera movement allows the audience to have a sense of hope for the Banks family, individually and as whole family. A third example is when Mary, the children, and Bert go and visit Uncle Albert at his home. Within these scenes, several reaction shots, low or high angle shots, and close–ups cut back and forth from Uncle Albert laughing and tumbling in the air, to the children laughing, to Bert trying to keep from laughing, and Mary admonishing them. • 33. Rhetorical Analysis Of Cesar Chavez Speech Cesar Chavez Speech Rhetorical Analysis Cesar Chavez was a civil rights leader and a labor union organizer who delivered a carefully crafted speech by acknowledging the perspective of his audience in order to vouch for the use of nonviolence over violence. While Chavez is arguing against the use of violence, he refrains from blaming anyone who had ever used violence. He manages to gain the trust of the audience by presenting himself as an understanding and compassionate individual, which allows them to be more receptive to his message. On the tenth anniversary of Martin Luther King's assassination, Chavez utilizes King's association with civil rights in order to give foundation to his own words. Chavez knows the anniversary is "...the best possible opportunity to recall the principles with which [their] struggle has grown and matured..." (ln 5–7) because King has values regarding civil rights that are synonymous to his own. Both Chavez and King possess the value that the human life is special and no one has the right to take it away. By referring to a well–known, wildly respected, and successful leader with a similar cause, Chavez has ensured that the audience will be receptive to his message that the use of nonviolence is a better solution to a problem than violence. A later reference to Gandhi further strengthens this effect. Chavez praises the effectiveness of a boycott, an act in which people forbid relations with a group in order to achieve change, made popular by Gandhi. The allusion to commonly revered supporters of the principles Chavez has built himself upon, gives him the credibility to gain the attention of the audience. Acknowledging his consideration for both sides of the argument and providing his definition of nonviolence allows Chavez's listeners to trust him because he has carefully described his own ideas while also considering perspectives contradictory to his own. Violence is described to result in "...many injuries and perhaps deaths on both sides..." as well as "...total demoralization of the workers" (ln 19–21). Nonviolence is described as the opposite of violence. Nonviolence will be there to "...[support] you if you have a just and moral cause" (ln 13– 14). Providing a clear ... The different types of audience theories there are will explore this, and how the audience reacts within these theories. There are many various audience theories out there, however six will be explored. "The word audience is so much part of our everyday talk that its complexity is often taken for granted." (Ross & Nightingale 2003) Today, media is surrounding us, whether it is television, films, magazines, games, radio, music, the news, and even billboards and posters, and we don't even acknowledge it, unless it hits us in the face. Along with this media, comes different audience, and different reactions. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hall also suggested that the way an audience reacts, is dependant on their cultural backgrounds and how they were brought up, for example, if the mass media's intended message is fruit is great, it all depends if an individual has been brought up to dislike fruit, etc. the audience is also given more credit, and it's understood that they mat react in different ways. Reception theory is the social interaction aspect, and the Two–Step Flow theory is also similar. "Formulated first in the The People's Choice, the hypothesis suggests that 'ideas often flow from radio and print to the opinion leaders and from them to the less active sections of the population.'" (Lazarfield and Katz, 1970) Paul Felix Lazerfiled originally came up with this theory, and then later, Elihu Katz began working with him. The two of them looked at during the presidential elections, how the votes make up the audience's minds and wrote a book exploring the different factors of it. They speculated how the mass media connects with people, however this communication is routed through opinion leaders. These people are very media–literate and they link their understanding to others. The mass media uses comedians as the opinion leaders, as they take real life news, and analyse it in a comical way, and the mass media probably entrust the comedians more, as they come across less bias and less of an agender, and the public find the news sometimes so bias, it was almost comical. • 37. Analysis Of The Film Bears Discover Fire The film Bears Discover Fire written by Terry Bisson is a film that was produced by college students. This film covers many different controversial topics. The book allows for many different perceptions of these topics to be seen.. Although the title of the film has a scientific feeling, it is more of a fantasy than a science fiction film. In the film "Bears Discover fire" one may interpret the movie as more of a fantasy film, with that being said the elements of a fantasy story base line can be perceived in a much bigger picture. In the film "Bears Discover Fire" one may preserve the film as fansty. In the film, there are parts of the story line that truly cannot happen during this time on earth. For example, when the bears are standing upright. In this scene one may think to themselves that this is something that can/ will not happen. Today's bears are not capable of standing upright and walking. Another example of a fantasy can be seen when the bears are walking around with fire. This scene shows signs of a fantasy because, a normal bear would not be capable of walking around with fire in their paws and setting up campfires. A final example of a fantasy in the film can be seen when, the grandma, Junior and Bobby are having a campfire with the bears in the woods. This is a scene that one might fantasize over. Davis explains the same scenario but believes that change isn't necessarily needed, and certain changes made by students could be devastating in their lives. The presentation of Othello in act III scene iii shows a pivotal change in his character persona. From viewing the previous scenes, the audience would have likely perceived Othello as an honorable and respectful man; however, with this scene we see his change in character occur so rapidly, that previous scenes may not have prepared the audience of the extent of the transformation of his character. Shakespeare makes the change in Othello's presentation through the use of his other character, Iago. The audience is sent on an imaginative journey as they picture the different facial expressions, changing body language and personalities of the characters. For example "The rat only snorted and thrust his hands deep into his pocket", "cried the Toad, straddling and expanding himself", "said Toad imploringly", "followed him eagerly" etc. The reader can interprete the nature and personality of the characters more precisely through exaggeration because they are able to picture them in their imagination. The use of exaggeration is effective as it allows the true nature of the character to be expressed in the writing, for example "said Toad imploringly" illustrates how Toad is desperate and pleaing to Ratty, however if the text only contained "said Toad" then the true nature of Toad would not be evoked in the audiences imagination. • 52. Seasons Of Love : The Theme Of Love And Rent Most of us faintly remember fables, songs, and even movies that entailed important life lessons that we use throughout life, such as The Three Little Pigs, Romeo and Juliet, and even The Wizard of Oz. Retelling the summary is the easy part; but what about the message the author is trying to convey? Luckily, Broadway has found a solution to this, as well as broadening the audience of interest by diversifying the cast, and "compromising" the script of these original pieces so more of America can relate. Stories told from a new, contemporary, perspective can motivate new and diverse audiences to understand lessons to stories they always overlooked, ultimately changing their entire perspective on life. One Broadway musical that swept the stage with attention was Rent. Rent takes place in the East Village of New York City from the late 1980's to the early 1990's. Rent targets a more pensive topic: HIV/AIDS. The story efficiently depicts the hardships of poverty, drug abuse, and financial struggle from the perspective of people who were HIV/AIDS positive back when scientists didn't know much about the stigma or how to treat it. In the film, the song, Seasons of Love, was performed. "How do you measure, measure a year"(Seasons of Love; Rent) was the question highlighted in the entire song. This keeps the story forever alive by never actually ending the story, the perfect permanent suspense. Throughout the story, Connell's masterful use of suspense keeps the audience guessing until far beyond the end. Such creative writing stirs the desire for more, keeping the audience hooked until the exhilarating finish. Connell's "The Most Dangerous Game" conveys a prime example of

  • 58. The Rhetorical Analysis Of A Gun Control Advertisement Slide 1: For my rhetoric situation project, I chose an ad that I found interesting. This ad is a gun control advertisement. It sparked an interest of mine because it has to do with one of the Constitutional rights, our 2nd Amendment which is the right to bear arms. This ad is wanting to put at the very least some more control on guns and that's challenging the lines of the Constitution which sparked my interests. Slide 2: The advertisement I ended up choosing is one done by "MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA" because it really does challenge some of the things our government has done. Think about it, as the ad states, "One child is holding something that's been banned in America to protect them" and "We ban the game dodgeball because it's viewed as being too violent. Why not an assault weapon?" which is a valid point. The government will not allow dodgeball to be played in the public school system because it caused many injuries but aren't assault weapons doing the same? The other way to look at this is through the Constitution though, because it grants United States citizens the right to bear arms so if we take away certain arms, couldn't this eventually lead to all arms being taken away? All guns are capable of killing or badly injuring someone and a person which makes all guns dangerous. It's against the Constitution to take all guns away so it's really a controversial ad. Slide 3: However, this ad argues against guns so that's what we are going to be talking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Analysis Of The Article ' Epigenetics And Human Disease ' Introduction How is it that two identical twins with the exact same DNA and the same environment can be very different? (Coutney Griffin 2012) Cortney Griffin elaborated on how her journey of having twins lead her to a deeper understanding of what epigenetics truly is. This talk, although vastly viewed in biochemistry classes including at the University of Texas of El Paso, differs from the scholarly article "Epigenetics and human disease: translating basic biology into clinical applications" by David Rodenhiser and Mellissa Mann. Their most prominent similarities and differences can be separated into audience and purpose, rhetorical appeals, and structure and delivery. Summary of Speech Courtney Griffin begins her speech by saying that nine years ago, she was told that she was going to have twins. This got her interested in how much of people's mental health and physical health has to do with nature and nurture. She took the stage to describe her journey at TEDX OU, is an independently Organized TED event at the University of Oklahoma. She had been trained as a geneticist. She was not expecting twins so she joked, what would happen if she put one kid in daycare and one kid in a drawer. This got her interested in epigenetics. Even though twins could have identical DNA and grow up relatively the same they are radically different people, to the point that there are health differences between the children. • 62. Sweeney Todd Summary I. Intro. The play Sweeney Todd has been performed on numerous stages since 1979. The 1982 version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, was directed by Harold Prince. Unfortunately, I watched a recoded production of the play; the recoding took place in 1982 but was based off the 1979 production. Over all my impression of Sweeney Todd, is that the play has a bitter–sweet tone that supports all the killing, lying, and deceiving that goes on in the play just so that Sweeney Todd could get his so called revenge. II. Body Paragraph 1: a. The scene that has interesting scenery would be one hour and twenty–two minutes into the recorded production. The scene is of Mrs. Lovett's restaurant; her restaurant is packed with people as Toby serves the guest meat pies. Mrs. Lovett's restaurant has an antique look to it. She has a wooden wall that has a faded green color painted on it; against the while is a chest, poster, and a door. Mrs. Lovett, herself standing next to a white bar like table, it is very high. She also has a barrel being supported by some type of stand in her restaurant. Next to the platform that her restaurant is set up on is a table were her customers sit and eat he meat pies. b. The scenery in this moment did provide a sense of location. Based off how the scene was set up anyone in the audience would've been able to known that the current location of the play was Mrs. Lovett's shop. III. Body Paragraph2: a. • 64. Comparing the Shower Scene from Psycho with the Boat Scene... Comparing the Shower Scene from Psycho with the Boat Scene from Jaws I have chosen the second question 'compare the famous shower scene from Psycho with the boat scene from Jaws. How do the directors build up tension here?' I am going to compare various things such as camera angles/shots, music, lightning, long and short edits, dramatic irony and sound. Jaws is a film about 3 brave men set out to kill a man eating shark who seems to be unconquerable as it has killed a lot of people in the past, the attacks he has made look horrifying and the men set out to kill it look like they have very little chance. They use a small boat as they hunt for the shark, the boat is small and the shark knows what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After a frightening scene it plays relaxing music and now the audience are relaxed and therefore don't expect the next scene which is the boat scene to be frightening. But it is and the audience will be scared as the shark attacks. The music that gives you a clue that the shark is coming can be very nerve racking as you don't know when it is going to attack the boat, while the men are having fun. Psycho music is very different; it is more expecting for the audience because the music is very high pitched. The director has used the obvious choice of music, but has picked very chilling music and makes the audience tense. During the shower scene the music is played and you feel it as the mother is killing the victim. It has the killing effect and after the music it stays in your head until the next scene as you don't want it to be played again. The boat scene is very different to the shower scene, but they both build up a lot of tension. The Jaws boat scene builds up its tension by focusing around the boat and the men. The audience will feel a bit jumpy as they don't expect the shark coming, but the tension created has to end, it is the tension that makes you scared. Psycho shower scene builds up tension by focusing on the girl non stop for a little while, and it shows you the girl getting in the shower, now you expect that something sinister will happen because at the beginning of ... • 66. The Perception Of Self Awareness In America, our self–image is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of our daily lives. In an ever–changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of which we believe the world sees us. But is this true of all people? Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people can easily be detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta & Henrich, 2008). Perception, especially self–perception, can vary vastly from one culture to another. One perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that East Asian's attempt to place their concern with self–concept in the hands of the people around them, as opposed to some other cultures that can be found to focus more prominently on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience will notice the sound of their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of attention in the third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an audience member, rather than their own. People of an East Asian culture were also found to out preform Westerners in a task that measured perspective–taking. Previous studies showed that Japanese people and Westerners do not process self–awareness the same. Because of this excessive amount of information provided about cultural differences in self–awareness, it was appropriate to be tested. "Since it was found through research that East Asians focus more heavily on their audience's view of them, in turn, they should be more influenced by the way they believe others see them. • 68. Margaret Atwood and Anwar Sadat Speeches Essay What makes the selected speeches worthy of critical study? Margaret Atwood's Spotty–Handed Villainesses (1994) and Anwar Sadat's Statement to the Knesset (1977) are both speeches worthy of critical study because of their fascinating ideas and values. "There was a little girl Who had a little curl Right in the middle of her forehead; When she was good, she was very, very good, And when she was bad, she was horrid!" Atwood begins her speech with an anecdote and quotes this famous nursery rhyme to gain a personal connection with her audience and to introduce the subject of her speech – women in literature. Atwood's speech raised some important issues in the era following a strong feminist push. She was able to find a balance between support for the Women's Movement whilst criticising it for its excesses. As a result of this mature stance, her speech was respected by many for addressing the important issue of women in society, and doing it in an entertaining manner. Atwood was influential during the feminist movement which began in the 60s and her influence is shown through her literary works. Her speech raises the issue of the role that women should take in society looking at it through the portrayal of women in literature. Atwood's historical and literary references allow her to validate her points and to explore the role of women and how they are portrayed in literature (good and bad). The audience can easily identify with them – Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Lady Macbeth. Atwood supports her ideas with language techniques and features making her speech worthy of critical study. Great speeches combine language techniques and features with structure to reveal and emphasis their key points. One of Sadat's most memorable themes in his Statement to the Knesset is the value of "permanent peace based on justice". The repetition of this phrase emphasises the point and makes sure the audience will remember it. Sadat uses enumeration to structure his arguments "the fist fact", "the fifth ... • 70. Theories on Audience Activity Essay Audience activity was first noted in the 1960's with Stuart Hall's theory of encoding/ decoding. Before this theory, effects studies were carried out and 'was dominated by a 'hypodermic model of influence' (Curran 1990: 506), thus audience activity emerged from this. Hall's theory led to studies being created by the likes of Morley (1981) the nationwide audience and Ang (1983) which led to some of Hall's findings being confirmed but there also being differences. Stuart Hall's theory of encoding/ decoding is where the notion of audience activity begins, he tried to account for active consumption also (Moores 1993). The encoding part of Hall's theory (producing the media) was done by an individual but the messages 'have a complex structure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These studies also look at the way advertisements leak into certain programmes, 'although this makes some form of engagement with consumer products unavoidable, the audience has not been rendered passive' (Stevenson 2002:76). The second type of study is to learn who watches certain programmes but Ang states there is little research on the context or the meaning constructed from this programme, 'the second form of research focuses on offered interpretations and the social relations of reception' (Stevenson 2002:76). What is clear from these two studies is that both assume there is some kind of audience activity. Studies assume audiences interpret or receive certain things, which mean the audience is active in some way. There are not actually any studies on audience activity it is assumed, not taking into account that messages may be sent to a viewer in an imperfect way such as the phone ringing in the middle of a programme or channel flicking. Morley (1980) produced an empirical study on the programme Nationwide. Nationwide addressed audiences as individuals living in a certain community, different to how other programmes would address the audience. The aim of Morley's study was to see whether different decoding techniques meant the preferred reading could be resisted by the culturally coded reading techniques, 'nationwide does not have a ... • 72. Toni Morrison Analysis Essay For centuries, poetry has remained an effective method of expressing ones' emotions and aesthetics without excessive criticism. Some distinguished individuals participated in this literary exercise and despite their motives, they acquired the profound ability to empathize with their audiences' ambitions, fears, and misfortunes. During the lamentable times of racial and economic turmoil, a brilliant woman named Toni Morrison was introduced into this world and would later be a remarkable influence on literature. Proactively, she channeled her frustrations and fears of racial prejudice into her literary works, earning an admirable reputation for her bravery of discussing sensitive topics regarding racial prejudice and injustices. For instance, Morrison elaborates on the adjective "unbidden" (Morrison, line 6) by including a simile, "Like the turn of sun through hills" (Morrison, line 7) as a result not only does she clarify her adjectives, but she also establishes a spontaneous and jovial tone she maintains throughout the poem. Although Morrison is aware of life's relentless issues that ultimately prevent this illustration from being possible, she subtly encourages her audience to aspire to establish a similar mindset. Correspondingly, Morrison explores the latter aspect of her theme in her poem "Someone Leans Near" In contrast to "It Comes Unadorned", "Someone Leans Near" is significantly more somber as it likely depicts one's fearful moments prior to their death. Morrison establishes a distressed tone as she begins her poem, illustrating the protagonist as despondent from experiencing something ghastly as well as a supernatural entity which correlates with the "Someone" mentioned in the title. Unfortunately, the poem does not explicitly mention the living status of the protagonist or whether or not the entity is a figment of the protagonist's imagination. The protagonist is portrayed as depressed and lonely, shedding "salt [from their] eyes" (Morrison, line 2) desperately in need of "words of reason, love or play" (Morrison, line 4) In addition, the pessimistic allegories further establish the protagonist as distant, and the audience can empathize with the protagonist's ... Technology And Technology We live in a time where when an adolescent complains about a headache or some kind of pain, an adult's first response is, "It's because you're always on that phone!". It's a common belief that technology, such as social media and the internet, is corrupting the youth and making us less productive. Clive Thompson, in the excerpt of his book, "Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better", asserts that the internet has had a positive effect not only on the quality of our writing but also on the quantity of writing in our time. Thompson supports his argument by first sharing historical evidence, then by analyzing statistics about the effects the internet has had on our writing, and finally, he describes personal anecdotes and expert testimonies to establish his credibility. The author's purpose is to persuade the audience so that they believe the internet has had a significant impact on the way individuals express themselves through their writing. Although Thompson uses several rhetorical strategies that helped support his argument, there were also moments when his strategy worked against his claim. The author writes in an informative tone to his audience, the readers of his book and others interested in the topic of science and technology, and its effect on our times. The popular assumption is that technology has had a negative effect on society, by making individuals "dumb", "lazy", and "illiterate". On the contrary, I believe social media, and ... The article, The World Is Not Falling Apart by Steven Pinker and Andrew Mack published by Slate, reminds the world not to focus on the media's perception of our corrupt world, but rather look closely and evaluate what true measures of violence unfolding each day. Humans' perception of the world is based off of the media, which states the earth is in a process of deteriorating. However, if one focuses on the trend lines instead of the headline, one would figure out that the world has never been in such a peaceful era. In the article Bill Clinton was recorded stating to "follow the trend lines, not the headlines", this means to take breakdown what information is being presented to the world each day and simplify it to our own judgments. This article is intended to suggest that people need to wake up from their lethargic routines, and not rely on unreliable sources that only concentrate on the major crimes, not the repetitive ones. Instead of focusing on the dramatic violence the media presents, turn focus on the amount of violence in the world, not the magnitude of the crime. Trend lines; are the rates in a data table either showing a negative slope or a positive one. In this instance, the trend lines of crimes like homicides, rapes, and shooting in the US are on a downwards slope.
