What, How, When, What, Why????
A well written technology plan can create a great path to guide a school’s technology initiative and make sure that the mission is accomplished. A tech plan:
Creates staff/board buy-in for support and communicates implementation.
Provides direction and a timeline to achieve school goals and thus improve delivery of instruction.
Focuses decision-making regarding which equipment to purchase, what software and training the school really needs, and how best to spend funds.
Identifies the personnel who will implement the technology initiative aa well as those responsible for implementation.
Meets the requirements to obtain federal e-rate funds.
Most schools today already have a technology plan or blueprint for implementing technology. If your school has a technology plan, you should examine and evaluate the tech program and see how well the plan is fulfilling goals, identify concerns and resolve issues that prohibit the plan from being effectively executed.
Formative evaluation or plan monitoring throughout the year judges what is or is not working at the time and permits adjustments while actions are still fluid.
A summative evaluation at year’s end reveals whether or not any change occurred as a result of the plan.
The committee evaluates the current technology program and plan.
Performance indicators focus attention on issues of quality, effectiveness, efficacy, usefulness, satisfaction, and impact. Pay close attention to the various components to examine and the particular data sources necessary to gather to investigate how well the plan accomplishes the component.
Above all, ask the following questions:
Is the existing technology plan a functioning or stagnant document?
Was consensus built for widespread adoption of the technology plan as well as the rationale for educational uses of technology?
How was the technology plan communicated to staff, parents, students, administrators, school board members, and community leaders?
When was the technology plan last evaluated?
Does the school leadership model technology use?
How was the staff involved in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the technology plan?
What role did data play in technology planning?
What statistics were significant?
How were data gathered?
Have your school needs recently changed? If they have changed, what is different now?
After the evaluation, you may have to re-construct a Tech Plan. The following slides presents how to write a tech plan.
Step 1 in Tech Planning: Select and empower an inclusive committee of 15-25 people.
