Gaudete Sunday - Reflection
While the theme of Adventis a focus on the comingof Jesus
in three ways: his first, hispresent, and his final Advent, the
readingsfor Gaudete Sunday deal with rejoicingin the Lord –
Christianjoy – as well as the missionof John the Baptist and
his connectionwith Advent.The theologian Henri
Nouwendescribedthe difference betweenjoyandhappiness.
While happinessisdependentonexternal conditions,joyis
"the experience ofknowingthat you are unconditionallylovedandthat
nothing– sickness,failure,emotional distress,oppression,war,or evendeath -
can take that love away." Thus joy can be presenteveninthe midst of sadness.
In his 2014 Gaudete Sundayhomily, Pope Francis said that Gaudete Sunday is
known as the "Sunday ofjoy",and that instead offretting about "all they still
haven't" done to prepare for Christmas, people should"thinkof all the good
things life hasgivenyou."]
