3. As urbanization increases, the question of
Sustainability increases and to maintain an order,
we need to ensure that our cities are inclusive,
safe, resilient and sustainable- Sustainable
Development Goal 11
Crucial Urban Development Challenges includes
poor governance, shortage of funds and weak
infrastructure.

4. The right to have an adequate house is
internationally considered as a basic human right
Adequate housing also needs to be affordable.
Affordable Housing in simple terms can be
understood as those units which is affordable to
different population segments.
UN Habitat, 2011 defines defines affordable
housing as the one which is adequate in quality,
location and that the cost is within the capacity
Increased urbanization exerts great pressure on
housing markets and the factors such financial
market stability, affordability, city
competitiveness and social segregation
contributes to the affordability crisis
5. United Nations Human Settlement
Programme is the UN body functioning to
promote social and environment
sustainability in urban spaces particularly
with the goal of providing adequate shelter
to all

6. In India, the shortage for housing is large,
despite various development interventions .
Ongoing urbanization and the large rate of
migration especially among the lower classes has
intensified the shortage.
Government has been taking various initiatives
since 1950’s to address this.

7. Housing for All by 2022 (2015-22)- National
Mission for Urban Housing launched in 25th June
2015
The mission seeks to provide central assistance
tthrough States and UTs for providing houses to
all eligible families/beneficiaries by 2022
Scheme is being implemented in All 4041
statutory towns as per Census 2011 with focus on
500 Class I cities
As of October 2020, 107.8 L houses have
sanctioned, out of which 66.7 lakh houses are
grounded and 37.8 Lakhs houses are completed.
