Explain How Is Iago A Sociopath
Raya Tarawneh
5/3/16
Is Iago a Sociopath? One of Shakespeare's most acclaimed works, Othello, delves into a wide range of themes. The play tackles issues of race, gender
and encompasses ideas of jealousy and deceit. Shakespeare also brings to life a variety of well–constructed characters. Iago, the deceitful antagonist,
can easily be identified as the liveliest and most complex character in the play. His devious nature raises the question of whether or not he is a
sociopath. Sociopathy is a mental disorder in which an individual's moral depravity poses a threat to society. The Psychopathy Checklist, commonly
known as the PCL, constructed a list of criteria used to diagnose sociopaths. These criteria vary from irresponsibility ... Show more content on

The PCL refers to sociopaths as having "superficial charm" and "glibness", both of which Iago possesses. When asked by Othello to recap the events of
the quarrel, Iago says "I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth/ Then it should do offence to Michael Cassio" (2.3.205–206). In saying so,
Iago comes off to Othello as both honest and loyal, most definitely charming him and covering up the fact that it was Iago himself who
intentionally set up the quarrel in order to become lieutenant. In document A, "conning others for personal profit or pleasure" is said to be usual of
sociopaths. This is easily applicable to Iago's character, who for the sake of becoming lieutenant and destroying Othello, manages to deceive
several characters in the play and ends up being the cause of Roderigo, Desdemona, Emilia and Othello's deaths. Once again, placing Iago and Ani
Korban side by side affirms Iago's sociopathy. Ani Korban praises his psychiatrist by referring to him/her as "one of the most astute and erudite
persons he has ever met". Immediately after saying so, Korban requests a favor: to have access to a payphone. Evidently, he also has the ability to
charm others and, similar to Iago, uses this superficial charm for his own personal

influence and deception. They have no guilt or remorse about exploiting or manipulating other people; winning is the most important thing. It is chiefly
characterized by something wrong with the person 's conscience. Sociopaths only care about fulfilling their own needs and desires. Everything and
everybody else is mentally twisted around in their minds. They often believe they are doing something good for society, or at least nothing that bad

ways. He lacks empathy, and has superficial charm, is also manipulative, conning, has poor behavioral controls and grandiose sense of self, as

to take many pills with alcohol" all this blaming other people shows his lack of empathy and selfishness's (Joseph 2015). Another example that
clearly indicates Roger is a sociopath is his conning and manipulatives. Roger, when he mentions the death of Indian kids by saying "The death of

Great Gatsby Materialism Essay
As Bertrand Russell once said, "It is the preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly."
Indeed, in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, set during the Roaring 20s, displays the materialism of the characters through their concern to
obtain more belongings. The Roaring 20s is considered as one of America's most prosperous eras, however, Fitzgerald denounces the loss of moral
values, the loss of identity, and the deception about achieving a person's American Dream in addition to the hierarchy ruled by the rich. Thus, inThe

Scott Fitzgerald's use of characterization and symbolism in The Great Gatsby denounces the superficial nature of the Roaring 20s and by doing so
demonstrates the threat of materialism. First, through Tom and Daisy Buchanan's wealth and lack of hard work to achieve their status exposes their
lack of purpose. As a result, they attempt to occupy their boredom through their lavish lifestyle, but instead creates problems that they are immune to
and exhibits their power–hungry personalities. Thus, good hearted people such as Gatsby is forced into becoming a materialistic man in order to
achieve his American Dream of acquiring Daisy. Nonetheless, Gatsby's disregard and sacrifice towards his identity and moral values only creates a
fake representation of himself. In this manner, the use of the color yellow to decorate one's self only represents that they are not the real deal and that
they will never attain the gold, which symbolizes real wealth and prosperity. This sets a boundary between the old rich, the new money, and the lower
class who will never be able to integrate within the gold–standard club. In this way, Fitzgerald denounces that on the surface the Roaring 20s is a
synonym to prosperity, however beneath this cover, the American Dream has lost its values due to people's lack of integrity, dignity, and

This novel is a story about a serial killer who kills serial killers. The beginning of the story starts off when Dexter is "dealing" with one of his
"victims" and continues on to when a mystery murder takes place in Miami, where Dexter livesssion–oriented serial killers justify their acts as "ridding
the world of evil", which is exactly what Harry drilled into Dexter's brain; "there are plenty of people who deserve it" was one of his more common
phrases. The qualities that make him a sociopath are: his lack of remorse, superficial charm, lying coolly, lack of empathy, early behavioral problems,
and fakes human emotion. His need to kill came from the traumatizing events that he blocked out of his mind; Dexter and his brother watched their

The first chapter introduces you to his "Dark Passenger", his evil self that comes out whenever the urge to kill becomes strong. When the "Dark

Deborah Morgan; she is crying for him to stop hovering the knife over her and his only response was "I can't help it." Because of his lack of human
emotion, he has learned to imitate it perfectly, with the exception of Sergeant Doakes who states that Dexter "gimme the – creeps." His most
impeccable imitation is his charm. He knows how to charm his way out of any situation but this charm also causes Detective LaGuerta to start falling
for him and this causes problems in the end. In order to maintain his disguise as a normal human being, he began dating Rita; "After years of dreadful
fumbling and embarrassment trying to look normal, I had finally hooked up with the perfect date." He chose Rita because she just came out of a

Lesson 4
A Worn Path– Eudora Welty
Question 1a "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty recounts the long journey of an elderly woman, Phoenix Jackson. As Phoenix plods along, the reader
has no idea of the reason for her trip. However, it can be gathered by Phoenix's attitude and remarks that this trip is a very important one. She seems
very determined to reach her goal. She tells the animals to keep "'out of [her] way'" (438). She continues to walk uphill, through thorny bushes, across
log bridges, and under barbed–wire fences. She is "'bound to go to town'" (440). The people Phoenix encounters do not seem to understand the
importance of Pheonix's journey. The hunger declares that it is "'too far'" (440). He says that when he comes out, he ... Show more content on

If her grandson was dead, she probably would not consider buying him a gift and thinking about his reaction. For Phoenix to remember him so
vividly and to think of surprising him with a gift implies that he still may be alive. In the end, it does not matter whether Phoenix's grandslon is alive
or not. What matters is Phoenix's willingness to travel the long journey for him. Her journey demonstrates undying love; she will travel this path for
him regardless whether he is alive of long gone.
Question 1d The character is Phoenix Jackson is revealed primarily through indirect presentation. Eudora Welty paints of vivid picture of Phoenix,
describing her appearance and recounting her words and actions. Phoenix Jackson is an elderly African–American woman. She is "very old" (437). Her
skin is filled with "numberless branching wrinkles" and her black her is composed of the "frailest of ringlets (437). She is not well–to–do; her apron is
made from "bleached sugar sacks" and her is tied by a "red rag" (437). Nevertheless, she is "neat and tidy" (437), though she cannot tie her shoelaces.
Phoenix is a good–natured person. She often makes light of her old age, laughingly declaring that she "'she ought to be shut up for good'" since she is
"'too old'" (438). She joyfully dances with the scarecrow after realizing that it was not a ghost. Phoenix is also very perceptive. She notices the nickel

Psychological Diagnosis: Charles Cullen The Angel Of Death
Eugena Pak Cullen – Psychological Diagnosis Charles Cullen, the Angel of Death, was the murderer behind the deaths of innocent civilians. A nurse's
duty is to care for the sick or infirm; however Cullen abused his rights as a nurse to cause slow, painful deaths to his patients. His traumatic background
which spurred him to attempt numerous suicides, sparked the horrifying murder committed in America. Although an official psychological diagnostic
was not given to Cullen, his actions, thoughts, and behaviors point to anti–social personality disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder.
Cullen is an exemplary example for a person experiencing anti–social personality disorder. He possess superficial charm, a grandiose sense of self
worth, pathological lying, lack of remorse, and, most of all, he believes that it is the hospital administrator's and orders fault for not stopping or

Cullen's psychopathic actions have started from his childhood. His method of killing his patients with dig and insulin was derived from his
childhood; Cullen depends on drugs to inflict pain on people, rather than violence ("Charles Cullen" 1,2). Cullen's ex wife Taub divorced with him

The Ghost’s Appeal: Man’s Interest in the Superficial in...
The Ghost's Appeal: Man's Interest in the Superficial in Toulouse–Lautrec's At the Moulin–Rouge
Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec's famous painting, At the Moulin–Rouge, combines striking coloring with abnormal lighting to create a work that addresses
men's superficial interest in women. The dark scene depicted in the painting includes ten people scattered about a restaurant. In the center, two women
and three men sit casually around a table while the background portrays two men and a woman peering into mirrors; a second woman (in the
foreground) observes the situation. The most arresting aspect of the picture is the dominating, pale face of a woman in the right foreground of the
picture. A careful analysis of the painting begins with the study... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leaves the women looking like actresses preparing for a performance. Enhancing this feeling are both the hair–fixing scene in the mirror and the
dramatic pose which occurs in the background. Even the seated woman's facial expression appears artificial and exaggerated. So the lighting, combined
with pose and facial expression, depicts the women as actresses simply putting on an act.
Toulouse–Lautrec again uses color and contrast in making the women appear ghost–like. Most obviously, the previously discussed issue of lighting
causes their faces to appear pale. When displayed on a canvas filled with dingy hues, the white stands out and highlights their ghostliness. Beyond that,
the women seem merely painted over the original scenery. It feels as though a piercing stare will cut right through the women and reveal the wood
floor. This impression is accomplished, in part, by uniting a wrinkle in the foreground character's dress with a line in the floorboard. Even more
strikingly, the dress of the woman posing in the background virtually fades into the floor. These effects drain the women of their substance, enhancing
the feeling that they are simply paint on canvas–nothing more. In short, Toulouse–Lautrec curiously bestows a ghostly essence to his female characters.
This careful study of Toulouse–Lautrec's portrayal of women allows insight into his theme for the painting. As shown earlier, these women form a
striking combination of actress

Psychopathy and Crime Essay
Psychopathy is a disease of the mind, in which the psychological state of someone has emotional or behavioral problems serious enough to require
psychiatric evaluation. Psychopaths have no concern for the feelings of others and a complete disregard of any sense of social obligation. Psychopaths
are characterized by lack of empathy, poor impulse control and manipulative behaviors. They use charm, manipulation, intimidation, and the use of
severe to mild violence to satisfy their own needs.
Psychopathy is derived from two Greek words: psych, meaning soul, and pathos, meaning suffering. They were once used to explain any form of
mental illness. Psychopathy was recognized in the early 1800's at which time Pinel explained the condition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Psychopaths can seem just like you or me, but when you are not around them this is when their mental disorder kicks in. Psychopaths that have been
put in jail committed three times as many crimes per year then non–psychopaths. 97% of convicted psychopathic criminals cause at least one violent
crime compared to 74% of non–psychopaths. Psychopaths are shown to be more violence throughout their entire life compared to a regular people.
Psychopaths tend to have a greater chance of failing on parole and mandatory supervision and have a faster rate of failing then non–psychopaths.
Psychopathy predicts recidivism on conditional release as well as or better than do actuarial risk instruments. Psychopaths recidivate at a rate of three
to four times higher than that of non–psychopaths.
Doctors use a simple test to predict psychopathy called a Psychopathy Checklist–Revised or known as the PCL–R test. This is a checklist that has
twenty items on it that included: glibness or superficial charm, grandiose sense of self–worth, need for stimulation/proneness to boredom, pathological
lying, conning or manipulative, lack of remorse or guilt, shallow affect, callous and lack of empathy, parasitic lifestyle, poor behavioral controls,
promiscuous sexual behavior, early behavioral problems, lack of realistic, long–term goals, impulsivity, irresponsibility, failure to accept

Who Is The Protagonist In The Great Gatsby
In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, he presents a story set against the backdrop of the United States in the 1920s, a period in history that one
would relate to lavish and excessive spending and materialism. To that end, he presents through the eyes of the narrator, Nick, some of the main
characters, among them being Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby. Beginning with Tom, Daisy's very wealthy husband who attended college with Nick, he
comes across as dominating and arrogant from his first appearance when Nick visits him at his house. This is further accentuated by his musculature
and rough speaking voice. Beyond these characteristics, he is enthralled by some disturbing and racist opinions, as well as the fact that he is
involved in an affair with Myrtle, a married woman, despite being married to Daisy. He is also known to physically abuse and assault women, such as
Myrtle when she began talking about Daisy at a party. Putting the pieces of his character together, he is overall a rather mean–spirited and obnoxious
man, with a highly regressive view on the world. He is an easy representor for the ideas of greed and tyranny over the less... Show more content on

The Motif Of Love In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet
Love can prove a strong and intense affection towards another person, however teens contain no experience whatsoever, therefore their 'love' proves
merely lust. Romeo and Juliet presents a tragic love story, where two young teens fall in love, from opposing families, which results in both of their
deaths. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare, uses the repetition of beauty in order to develop a motif of superficial love. The use of this
motif suggests that William Shakespeare looks to present the audience that physical attraction should not remain wholly necessary for romantic love. In
Acts 1 and 2, William Shakespeare presents Romeo as a character attracted to someone by their looks rather than their personality. Romeo states,...

Juliet asserts, "Lovers don't need the light to see each other; their love illuminates them" (iii, II, 8–9). Accordingly, Juliet adresses how the lovers'
beauty makes it possible for them to see each other in the dark. The motif of superficial love helps the author further communicate the idea that
Romeo and Juliet's relationship lacks patience. Due to this, beauty illustrates the foundation of their relationship, which represents an unformed
reason to love one another. Paris says, "Your face is mine, and you have slandered it" (iv, I, 36). Paris states that now since he has the right to marry
Juliet, he owns her face. Shakespeare reveals that Juliet is forced to marry Paris, although she does not like him. Her love truly can be considered for
Romeo, however she cannot confess to her family that, when in fact, Shakespeare incorporates superficial love by wording that. If their love meant
something true, they would not care about the consequences of loving each other, however they did not tell their families because of the feuds, which
by given these points is why inferred that it can inform whether their love can consider itself as superficial. The author depicts how romantic love

The Shawshank Redemption And American Psycho
Psychology by definition is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context. Every
brain is biologically and chemically different, and how these chemicals react in your brain and body can have an effect on the person's characteristics.
The two movies that I chose to watch were The Shawshank Redemption and American Psycho. In The Shawshank Redemption there is a clear case of
a mentally healthy character and in American Psycho there is a very definitive sign of a character with a mental disorder. In The Shawshank
Redemption, Andy Dufresne is portrayed by Tim Robbins and in American Psycho, Patrick Bateman is played by Christian Bale. The Shawshank
Redemption came out in 1994 and has been named one of the best movies to be produced. Shawshank provides a display of a mentally healthy
character, Andy Dufresne, who was convicted for murder charges on his wife and her lover. Andy is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, so
needless to say he will be spending a long time in prison. Before Andy was convicted, he was a hot shot banker who made a surplus of money but
people also claim he fell out of love with his wife. Not showing his wife enough attention led her to have an affair and then allegedly Andy found out
and murdered the both of them. The only problem with Andy being sentenced to prison for the murder is the fact that he did not actually do it and he
was falsely convicted for a crime he did

as a delightful and innocent young woman whom Gatsby is in love with. With some time, however, through Nick's observations the readers realize
that Daisy is merely stringing Gatsby along with no real intention on leaving her rich husband Tom. In the first years of Daisy and Gatsby's
relationship, Gatsby had no real chance with Daisy because of his low financial status. Although Daisy believed she loved him at the time, she would

The Great Gatsby Character Analysis
In order to become a wealthy individual, you must have a wide range of characteristics shared amongst the billionaires of today and yesterday.
People that have more than they can spend, share a lot of psychological traits and characteristics that are believed to be fundamental if you want to
become rich. Most if not all of the psychological traits and characteristics shared amongst the richest of the rich are seen today as a socially wrong
thing: lack of empathy, psychotic behavior, etc. The traits and characteristics that we consider inhumane or simply bad are often the tools utilized
by individuals to become rich. Often time people believe this is a choice, but the reality is that this is simply the nature of their mental phycology,
the way they are mentally wired. Scott Fitzgerald, in his book titled The Great Gatsby, creates a character named Gatsby that worked hard in order
to become a very wealthy individual, but because of lack of the billionaire trait and characteristics, Gatsby more closely resembles the mentality that
of the average person in a world of rich individuals. The Great Gatsby provides a window of the mentality of the average person through the actions
of Gatsby. If Gatsby is placed in a lower economic class with his money staying relative to the average income of such class, we see that his traits and
characteristics more closely resemble that of a lower class citizen rather than a money–thirsty hardworking billionaire. Though not entirely true, there

The Mask of Sanity: The Mental Disorders of Poets
The Mask of Sanity: The Mental Disorders of Poets For more than 200 years, clinicians have recognized the existence of individuals who did not fit
the established categories of mental disturbances by failing to show remorse or an understanding of the severity of their conditions (Cleckley, 1982).
For the next two centuries, researchers would subsequently refine this nomenclature by including various types of antisocial and criminal behaviors
that were characteristic of mentally disturbed individuals. In his book, The Mask of Sanity (1982), though, H. C. Cleckley maintained that
psychopaths were not necessarily the product of deprived lives in the early years, but suggested that people who have some of the characteristics of
psychopathic behaviors do not have the requisite insight into their disorder or their personal state of well–being to recognize them (Raine, 1993).
According to Gao and Glenn (2009), "Cleckley's book, The Mask of Sanity, provided the first and classic description and interpretation of
psychopathy and theorized that this form of personality disorders may be due to a biological deficit" (p. 813). To help distinguish between
personality types, Cleckley (1982) defined "psychopathy" as "a personality disorder evidenced by a distinctive cluster of behaviors and inferred
personality traits defined by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist–Revised" (p. 449). By contrast, Cleckley defined "psychopath" as "a social predator

Examples Of Superficiality In The Great Gatsby
Happiness is not defined by wealth or luxury, happiness is attained with one's satisfaction with oneself and their lifestyle. F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays in
his book The Great Gatsby that happiness is not achieved through materialistic desires, but with contentment with one's life. Daisy's personality is an
embodiment of this theme throughout the novel. She pretends to be optimistic and content with her luxuries and life with Tom when in reality she is
pessimistic. Daisy has a jubilant air about her that attracts people to be her company. Last, but not least, Daisy is spoiled because she is accustomed to
having luxuries all her life. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses Daisy's superficial, charming and overindulgent nature in The Great Gatsby to portray ... Show more

her face in her hands as if feeling its lovely shape, and her eyes moved gradually out into the velvet dusk. I saw that turbulent emotions possessed
her..."(21). This quotation portrays that Daisy has a tempting atmosphere that pulls attention towards her. In addition, in the novel it says; "We went
down to the road and entered by the big postern. With enchanting murmurs Daisy admired this aspect...and there was a pink and golden billow of

Essay on PCL-R: The Test of Success
"People fake a lot of human interactions, but I feel like I fake them all, and I fake them very well," admits Dexter, the infamous television serial killer.
Thoughts and statements similar to this may be seen as morally reprehensible or repugnant, but gasps and frowns on those behaviors don't rule out
significantly plausible benefits. Psychopathy has long been labeled a personality disorder; a disorder believed to be serious enough of a threat to society
to be treated using methods of sedation, incarceration, and climaxing at lobotomization. But could the worry have been that these psychopaths would
just become too successful? The following analyzed documents support the hypothesis that psychopathic personality traits lead to ... Show more content

Two forms of balancing selection are heterogeneity in fitness optima and frequency dependent selection. The researchers conducted a study to find if
the benefits of psychopathic traits outweigh the costs. It seems as though they do, which is why psychopathy still exists. The promiscuous sexual
behavior, coercion, superficial charm, fearlessness and deception with lack of empathy all greatly lead to benefits in resource and mate acquisition. Of
course if everyone possessed these traits, natural selection would probably select for the most exaggerated forms of these behaviors, just creating more
intense psychopaths. The majority of a psychopath's traits enable him/her to have an advantage over the normal person in society when obtaining
mates and resources. Also, since they feel little remorse and empathy, they can pursue goals using logical reasoning without letting emotions deter
them, ultimately resulting in more success. Not only do they increase their reproductive value, they also know how to emulate emotions, making them
more desirable to acquire even more resources. This only then raises the question, why aren't their traits becoming more prominent? This question was
answered in their research with the proposition that the more rare a certain allele is, the more its

Characteristics Of A Psychopath
The Psychopathic Disorder is commonly known as the Psychopaths in this day of age. Although studies have not shown these results, many people
commonly associate the psychopathic disorder with serial killers. It is a well–known truth that humans tend to associate certain characters and words
with people. The characteristics of a psychopath are, but not limited to male, charming, lacking in conscience and feeling for others, intelligence,
unreliability, lack of shame and remorse, drug addictions, impulsive, emotional, superficial love relationships, and poor judgement.

(Gao, Raine, & Dr. Phil, 2012, p.195). The research gather seems to suggest that Viding (2004) (as cited in Cleckley (1941) was the first person to
define the characteristics of the psychopath. Cleckley (1941) also stated that the traits found in the psychopathy include: "lack of empathy, lack of
guilt, shallow affect, and manipulation of others" (p. 1329). These results provide confirmatory evidence that "the lack of anxiety, guilt, and
emotional tensions" are the best way to identify psychopaths (Kirkman, 2002). It is then stated by Mitch and Blair (2000) (as cited in Kirkman,
2002) that a psychopath is a person with an emotional disorder. The psychopath couldn't develop conscience and empathy which leads to the lack of
feeling remorseful or shameful (p.157). A psychopath not being able to feel remorseful or shameful will tend to steal and lie a ton. Greenacre (1945)
states that the "patients are not deliberate offender; they lie and steal impulsively" (p.496). Levy (2014) agrees that although the lack of empathy in
psychopaths is arguable, there is no denial that the lack of empathy causes the psychopaths to " have difficulties with the acquisition of moral concepts,
and the theses difficulties, in return, entail that they lack moral responsibility for their actions" (p. 351). In addition to this, Cavadino (1998) describes

Seriousness In Oscar Wilde's A Separate Peace
Wilde sees that dullness is the final, truest form of seriousness, and its consequence. In the play, Serious manners are dull and boring, where
Seriousness is called 'unbecoming' and the common sense is called 'plain'. Therefore, virtue fails to deliver important and true ideas, one must be
amusing to be heard and that is by avoiding seriousness. However, amusing characters in the play are signs of triviality and shallowness, also
referred to in the play as 'heartless'. Lord Goring is being called 'heartless throughout the play by his father Lord Caversham, who always scolds
him for being trivial and idle. From the beginning of the play, Lord Goring is introduced to us, by his father, as "good for nothing". However, not

Analysis Of Mad Shadows
Does every family love and respect one another? Are all families in a healthy relationship with each other? In the book Mad Shadows, the answer to
these questions are clearly displayed. Mad shadows, is a fictional novel written by Marie–Claire Blair. It tells the story of an unusual family who are in
a prolong feud with one another, which is the by–product of their illusions. The character, Louise, is the mother of the family. Her superficial view of
life and constant denial of truth is the root cause of the dysfunction, misery, and jealousy in her family. Which consequently, fuels her own death and
destruction by the end of her tragic life. Louise's illusions all have a beginning stage. One of these delusions is the fact that she views the world in a
superficial perspective, only connection self worth to beauty. An example of this, is seen when she is given the symbolic representation of a prostitute
when she marries her first husband, seducing him with her charm and beauty. This provides background information about her character, stating that
this superficial view has been a part of her since a young age. This twisted perspective also feeds into her other misconception, which is that her son,
Patrice, must be intelligent because of his beautifully sculpted face and body, but, is in fact dumb. In the quote "Louise did not question the
intelligence of her ten–year–old Adonis. He spoke very little, but she attributed this speechlessness, like the silence of the gods, to

Lady Macbeth is a white, Scottish lady of middle age and upper class background and social status. She is married to the Thane of Cawdor and
Glamis, Lord Macbeth, and currently has no need for a job and remains a housewife. She was admitted due to the express referral of her husband,

from her husband, so I may judge for myself the severity of the situation at hand. After a conversation with Macbeth, it seems to be that Lady Macbeth

Memory functions were grossly intact with respect to immediate and remote recall of events and factual information. There was no evidence of
perceptual disorder. Social judgment appeared poor, as evidenced by a lack of appropriate interactions with staff and other patients on the ward and by
disruptive efforts to treatment goals required for discharge. Pathological lying was shown throughout the examination in the most extreme form; these
were deceitful, unscrupulous, manipulative, and dishonest behaviour. Only on rare occasions were cases of these traits were uncovered due to the
layer of superficial charm that Lady Macbeth has imposed upon herself. This point's towards the possibility of Lady Macbeth being a psychopath
instead of having an underlying depressive disorder.
Summary of Evaluation
Results of psychological evaluation reveal an extended history of alcohol abuse and a psychotic disorder characterized primarily by disturbance of
thought content. Due to the extended need for anti–depressant drugs, it would suggest that Lady Macbeth might suffer from a depressive disorder.
However, the repeated need for the drugs, four years after the initial prescription would indicate that an addiction has occurred. The current clinical
presentation appears to represent a chronic psychotic disturbance which had its onset approximately four years ago (the death of her child). She lacks
sufficient motivation

Characterization in Sister Carrie Essay
Characterization in Sister Carrie
The theme of unrequited love and unfulfilled ambitions, against a backdrop of a nation being transformed by industrialism and capitalism, provides
the substance of Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie. During the late 19th Century we encounter three main characters who demonstrate this underlying
motif: Carrie Meeber, Charles H. Drouet, and George W. Hurstwood. Carrie will fulfill many of her desires for riches and success, but her insatiable
appetite will leave her feeling dissatisfied at the end of the novel and all alone. With respect to the two men who most covet her affections, Charles
Drouet and George Hurstwood we have a study in contrasts. About the only thing Drouet and Hurstwood have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As Eby (2) notes, "Carrie is not one to submit to a solemn round of industry while postponing gratification. Appropriately, Carrie's first lover is a
drummer or traveling salesman who goes on the road to market his company's wares."
Neither Carrie nor Drouet produce anything. Carrie uses her natural beauty and charms to consume the goods Drouet's money provides, but Drouet
only makes his money from moving goods not producing them. As much as neither Carrie nor Drouet produce anything tangible, they are both
necessary kinds of people in the new industrial nation. Eby (2) confirms this reasoning, "Drouet produces nothing tangible to sell, but the efforts of
thousands like him kept goods moving to their ultimate destination, consumers. Potential buyers like Carrie with easily manipulible desires are also
essential: without desire, the consumer economy stalls."
Drouet is written like a character who might become someone like Willy Loman should he ever settle down and marry and raise children. This is
because he is young and good–looking and can use his charms to woo consumers to purchase his products. Nevertheless, Drouet does not accept the
realities of his situation. Like his clothes and manners, if he does not like reality he tries to modify it through a variety of means, from running away
and denial to the pursuit of superficial pleasures as a means of escape.

Flattery in Pride and Prejudice Essay
Flattery in Pride and Prejudice
Since its composition in 1797, Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice has enjoyed two centuries of literary esteem not because of its witty dialogue or its
tantalizing plot, but because of its universal themes that allow modern readers to identify with early Victorian life. Although the novel focuses on the
etiquette of courtship, related social rituals are also prevalent throughout the story. WilliamCollins, a rector in Pride and Prejudice, uses excessive
flattery to persuade people to look upon him favorably. He even lavishly praises himself to enhance his self–esteem. While the sycophant's peculiar

Of the three distinct directions Collins aims his flattery, the most complex to explicate is arguably that praise he directs toward himself. In a letter to
the Bennet family, he writes "I flatter myself that my present overtures of good–will are highly commendable...[and you will not] reject the offered
olive branch" (67). In this introduction to Collins, he asserts his benevolence as nothing short of remarkable and immediately springs from that notion
to presume it bears influence over others. His self–assuring antics appear in an argument later when he remarks "...I consider myself more fitted by
education and habitual study to decide on what is right than a young lady like yourself" (106–107). Collins' self–directed flattery empowers him with
decisive confidence that allows him to win logical disputes by default, no doubt bolstering his self–image and augmenting his probability for affluence.
On numerous occasions, Collins asserts the importance of his appointment as rector in the community, implying that he thinks highly of the rigid
demeanor required to fulfill the duties of his imminent position.

Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the most important clinical constructs of the 21st century
(Hare, Clark, Grann, & Thornton, 2000, p. 623). Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred socially deviant
behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to possess are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive,
selfish, aggressive, lacking remorse, shame, feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors (Hare, & Neumann,

Millon's category of elitist narcissism will not be used in this essay because this type "amplifies an already inflated self–image" as opposed to negating
feelings of inadequacy and inferiority (Millon, Personality Disorders 339). Millon states that this type of narcissism stems from a fear of "being
ordinary" (Personality Disorders 339). In my analysis, I argue that Gatsby's and Gray's narcissism can be seen as a result of self–esteem issues, and that
excludes the elitist narcissism. Before moving on to the analysis, I am going to provide a description of the three subtypes used in this essay. Millon

that these narcissists augment their sense of narcissistic power with sexual conquests, and after having won others over they swiftly write off their

Furthermore, amorous narcissists leave behind them a series of scandalous acts such as swindling, sexual abundance, pathological lying and fraud

Differences Between The Book And The Constant Gardener
The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener, which is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, is not fiction. After watching the movie, if you
search the title on the internet, you will know the shocking fact that this is a real story. The Constant Gardener originated from the novel The Constant
Gardener written by John le CarrГ© in 2001, based on a real–life case in Kano, Nigeria, related to medical experimentation in the 1990s. Therefore,
both the novel and the movie are mainly depicting such a careless, indiscrete medical experimentation, with a few changes such as a change of location
and change of the medicine's name. Taking off these superficial alterations, the difference between the real case andThe Constant Gardener–including
both novel and movie―is virtually none.
Back to the movie, we can see a low–level British diplomat Justin Quayle is the main character in this movie. One day, his wife Tessa was found dead,

Examples Of Daisy In The Great Gatsby
In The Great Gatsby, written by Fitzgerald, Gatsby releases an ultimately superficial persona to the world due to his obsession with Daisy. Through
the examination of Gatsby's smile, one can see that his charm is merely a façade hiding his past. The subtle descriptions of Gatsby's morals, in
relation to the effect that Daisy has on him, demonstrates that Gatsby is not all that 'great'. Through Gatsby's attempt to achieve the love of the
unattainable Daisy, he never realizes that Daisy being 'nice' masks the pain she causes him. Because Gatsby's hopelessly romantic nature was caused
by meeting Daisy, Gatsby was later portrayed as superficially charming and well–poised, thus suggesting that Daisy was the main reason for his
questionable character. In an attempt to conceal his past and win over Daisy's heart, Gatsby's smile shows... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Passage 2, Gatsby is overwhelmed by Daisy and is "excited" by the idea that Daisy is perfect and sought after by many men (149). Although her

Gatsby's misjudgement in morality. Even though Gatsby acknowledges the fact that he does not have the "right" to love Daisy due to his social
class, Gatsby puts up a façade to attain Daisy's love and thus hides his past (149). For instance, Gatsby's judgement on morals is skewed when he
is described as "[ravenous]' and "[scrupulous]," demonstrating that Gatsby is greedily taking Daisy and "giving her a sense of security" when he
could not sustain such reassurance (147). In general, Daisy's "value" controls Gatsby's morality as he is forced to change in order to win Daisy's love

Psychopath Essay
What is a psychopath?
Psychopathy is usually defined as a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behaviour, lack of empathy and remorse and bold superficial
behaviour. A checklist developed by Dr Bob Hare identifies the key traits of a psychopath which is used universally to identify psychopaths. The main
features of psychopaths include:
Superficial charm
Grandiose sense of self worth
Pathological lying
Cunning/manipulative
Lack of remorse/guilt
Emotionally shallow
Callous/lack of empathy
Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
Lack of realistic long–term goals
Impulsivity
Introduction
Upon deciding what sentences to give to criminal psychopaths, we must consider multiple factors. Firstly I will discuss the issues with the
classification and diagnosis of psychopathy, the importance being that if the wrong diagnosis is given it could cause a problem with criminal
judgements. The management and treatment of psychopaths must also be examined, exploring their reactions and responses to different types of
environments and treatments and significantly their likelihood of reoffending if released. Finally it must be decided whether psychopaths should be
held criminally responsible for their actions (and therefore sentenced to prison) or be entitled to the insanity defence and be sent to a psychiatric
hospital to be treated, where the psychopath would usually spend longer time than if they were sentenced to prison. If a psychopath is guilty of

Beauty Pageants : A Little Girl 's Psyche
A little girl's psyche is extremely fragile; it cracks under the pressure of being perfect and is no match for the insanely high standards of the pageant
world. A 2007 study conducted by the American Psychological Association found a link between the seemingly fun and harmless beauty pageants and
the development of low self–esteem, eating disorders, and depression. In addition to being mentally damaging, pageants are also damaging to the
wallets of parents. Families may spend thousands of dollars on artificial tanner, teeth whitening treatments and glitzy pageant attire. Beauty pageants
send out a wrong, toxic message to young minds. "Pageant girls are taught from a very early age that what is most critically important is their
physical appearance along with a superficial and erotized charm. They are presented in a hyper–sexualized manner." (Hollandsworth 8). With the
pressure to be perfect at an all time high as young girls are bombarded every day with images of unrealistically beautiful and thin women in today's
media, the effects of childhood beauty pageants are damaging and the practice should be banned entirely.
Even without beauty pageants, the amount of pressure girls feel to conform to society's standards of beauty is immeasurable. When girls participate in
pageants, the pressure is multiplied as they trot around on stage being judged on only their outward appearance. "The message these little girls take
away is that their natural beauty isn't enough– that their

for this later, after discussing what exactly being a psychopath entails and the different traits that are used to characterize them. Believe it or not, many
people in today's society cannot really distinguish between the two terms, psychopath and sociopath. Back in the early 1800s, the doctors that were
working with mental patients began to realize that some of their patients who appeared outwardly normal had what they termed a "moral depravity" or
"moral insanity". These patients seemed to have no sense of the rights of other people, or even of ethics in general. The term psychopath was initially
applied to these individuals around the beginning of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, the term switched to sociopath to focus more heavily on the

Explain How Is Iago A Sociopath

  • 1. Explain How Is Iago A Sociopath Raya Tarawneh 5/3/16 Is Iago a Sociopath? One of Shakespeare's most acclaimed works, Othello, delves into a wide range of themes. The play tackles issues of race, gender and encompasses ideas of jealousy and deceit. Shakespeare also brings to life a variety of well–constructed characters. Iago, the deceitful antagonist, can easily be identified as the liveliest and most complex character in the play. His devious nature raises the question of whether or not he is a sociopath. Sociopathy is a mental disorder in which an individual's moral depravity poses a threat to society. The Psychopathy Checklist, commonly known as the PCL, constructed a list of criteria used to diagnose sociopaths. These criteria vary from irresponsibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The PCL refers to sociopaths as having "superficial charm" and "glibness", both of which Iago possesses. When asked by Othello to recap the events of the quarrel, Iago says "I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth/ Then it should do offence to Michael Cassio" (2.3.205–206). In saying so, Iago comes off to Othello as both honest and loyal, most definitely charming him and covering up the fact that it was Iago himself who intentionally set up the quarrel in order to become lieutenant. In document A, "conning others for personal profit or pleasure" is said to be usual of sociopaths. This is easily applicable to Iago's character, who for the sake of becoming lieutenant and destroying Othello, manages to deceive several characters in the play and ends up being the cause of Roderigo, Desdemona, Emilia and Othello's deaths. Once again, placing Iago and Ani Korban side by side affirms Iago's sociopathy. Ani Korban praises his psychiatrist by referring to him/her as "one of the most astute and erudite persons he has ever met". Immediately after saying so, Korban requests a favor: to have access to a payphone. Evidently, he also has the ability to charm others and, similar to Iago, uses this superficial charm for his own personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Who Is An Antisocial Personality Disorder? A sociopath is someone who demonstrates an antisocial personality disorder. Sociopaths are glib and superficially charming; They are masters of influence and deception. They have no guilt or remorse about exploiting or manipulating other people; winning is the most important thing. It is chiefly characterized by something wrong with the person 's conscience. Sociopaths only care about fulfilling their own needs and desires. Everything and everybody else is mentally twisted around in their minds. They often believe they are doing something good for society, or at least nothing that bad (dsm–iv–definition–of sociopath). The call girls, Maria and Stacy come up to add flavor to their weekend. The party is about to start when things get horrible and way out of their control. Roger, the big cheese may have killed one of them and the enjoyable weekend party is turned upside down. Carl and Peter try to cover the incident. When the girls ' pimp, Byron Washington, arrives at the scene they started argue for price of life which gets shocking and outrageous settlement (Joseph 2015) Roger Sizemore is one of the hilarious characters of the film "Window of Opportunity." Roger is a sociopath in different ways. He lacks empathy, and has superficial charm, is also manipulative, conning, has poor behavioral controls and grandiose sense of self, as evidence on the film (Joseph 2015). An example, in the film, it shows poor empathy when Roger tied up the call girl to fulfill his sensual pleasure. He said, "I did not do anything, it is her fault" He blames Byron and Maria for his action. He states, "Byron provided the drugs and Maria told her to take many pills with alcohol" all this blaming other people shows his lack of empathy and selfishness's (Joseph 2015). Another example that clearly indicates Roger is a sociopath is his conning and manipulatives. Roger, when he mentions the death of Indian kids by saying "The death of those kids bothers me!" • 3. Great Gatsby Materialism Essay As Bertrand Russell once said, "It is the preoccupation with possessions, more than anything else, that prevents us from living freely and nobly." Indeed, in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, set during the Roaring 20s, displays the materialism of the characters through their concern to obtain more belongings. The Roaring 20s is considered as one of America's most prosperous eras, however, Fitzgerald denounces the loss of moral values, the loss of identity, and the deception about achieving a person's American Dream in addition to the hierarchy ruled by the rich. Thus, inThe Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses characterization and symbols to explore the superficial nature of the Roaring 20's and in doing so exposes the dangers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Scott Fitzgerald's use of characterization and symbolism in The Great Gatsby denounces the superficial nature of the Roaring 20s and by doing so demonstrates the threat of materialism. First, through Tom and Daisy Buchanan's wealth and lack of hard work to achieve their status exposes their lack of purpose. As a result, they attempt to occupy their boredom through their lavish lifestyle, but instead creates problems that they are immune to and exhibits their power–hungry personalities. Thus, good hearted people such as Gatsby is forced into becoming a materialistic man in order to achieve his American Dream of acquiring Daisy. Nonetheless, Gatsby's disregard and sacrifice towards his identity and moral values only creates a fake representation of himself. In this manner, the use of the color yellow to decorate one's self only represents that they are not the real deal and that they will never attain the gold, which symbolizes real wealth and prosperity. This sets a boundary between the old rich, the new money, and the lower class who will never be able to integrate within the gold–standard club. In this way, Fitzgerald denounces that on the surface the Roaring 20s is a synonym to prosperity, however beneath this cover, the American Dream has lost its values due to people's lack of integrity, dignity, and ... • 4. The Dark Passenger Chapter Summary This novel is a story about a serial killer who kills serial killers. The beginning of the story starts off when Dexter is "dealing" with one of his "victims" and continues on to when a mystery murder takes place in Miami, where Dexter livesssion–oriented serial killers justify their acts as "ridding the world of evil", which is exactly what Harry drilled into Dexter's brain; "there are plenty of people who deserve it" was one of his more common phrases. The qualities that make him a sociopath are: his lack of remorse, superficial charm, lying coolly, lack of empathy, early behavioral problems, and fakes human emotion. His need to kill came from the traumatizing events that he blocked out of his mind; Dexter and his brother watched their mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first chapter introduces you to his "Dark Passenger", his evil self that comes out whenever the urge to kill becomes strong. When the "Dark Passenger" comes out, he cannot control it. This is made apparent in the end when Dexter is struggling to keep himself from killing his stepsister, Deborah Morgan; she is crying for him to stop hovering the knife over her and his only response was "I can't help it." Because of his lack of human emotion, he has learned to imitate it perfectly, with the exception of Sergeant Doakes who states that Dexter "gimme the – creeps." His most impeccable imitation is his charm. He knows how to charm his way out of any situation but this charm also causes Detective LaGuerta to start falling for him and this causes problems in the end. In order to maintain his disguise as a normal human being, he began dating Rita; "After years of dreadful fumbling and embarrassment trying to look normal, I had finally hooked up with the perfect date." • 5. A Worn Path Lesson 4 A Worn Path– Eudora Welty Question 1a "A Worn Path" by Eudora Welty recounts the long journey of an elderly woman, Phoenix Jackson. As Phoenix plods along, the reader has no idea of the reason for her trip. However, it can be gathered by Phoenix's attitude and remarks that this trip is a very important one. She seems very determined to reach her goal. She tells the animals to keep "'out of [her] way'" (438). She continues to walk uphill, through thorny bushes, across log bridges, and under barbed–wire fences. She is "'bound to go to town'" (440). The people Phoenix encounters do not seem to understand the importance of Pheonix's journey. The hunger declares that it is "'too far'" (440). He says that when he comes out, he ... What matters is Phoenix's willingness to travel the long journey for him. Her journey demonstrates undying love; she will travel this path for him regardless whether he is alive of long gone. Question 1d The character is Phoenix Jackson is revealed primarily through indirect presentation. Her skin is filled with "numberless branching wrinkles" and her black her is composed of the "frailest of ringlets (437). She is not well–to–do; her apron is made from "bleached sugar sacks" and her is tied by a "red rag" (437). Nevertheless, she is "neat and tidy" (437), though she cannot tie her shoelaces. Phoenix is a good–natured person. She often makes light of her old age, laughingly declaring that she "'she ought to be shut up for good'" since she is "'too old'" (438). • 6. Psychological Diagnosis: Charles Cullen The Angel Of Death Eugena Pak Cullen – Psychological Diagnosis Charles Cullen, the Angel of Death, was the murderer behind the deaths of innocent civilians. A nurse's duty is to care for the sick or infirm; however Cullen abused his rights as a nurse to cause slow, painful deaths to his patients. His traumatic background which spurred him to attempt numerous suicides, sparked the horrifying murder committed in America. Although an official psychological diagnostic was not given to Cullen, his actions, thoughts, and behaviors point to anti–social personality disorder, schizophrenia, and major depressive disorder. Cullen is an exemplary example for a person experiencing anti–social personality disorder. He possess superficial charm, a grandiose sense of self worth, pathological lying, lack of remorse, and, most of all, he believes that it is the hospital administrator's and orders fault for not stopping or reporting him ("Serial Killer Gets Prime Time Audience." 1). His method of killing his patients with dig and insulin was derived from his childhood; Cullen depends on drugs to inflict pain on people, rather than violence ("Charles Cullen" 1,2). • 7. The Ghost’s Appeal: Man’s Interest in the Superficial in... The Ghost's Appeal: Man's Interest in the Superficial in Toulouse–Lautrec's At the Moulin–Rouge Henri de Toulouse–Lautrec's famous painting, At the Moulin–Rouge, combines striking coloring with abnormal lighting to create a work that addresses men's superficial interest in women. The dark scene depicted in the painting includes ten people scattered about a restaurant. In the center, two women and three men sit casually around a table while the background portrays two men and a woman peering into mirrors; a second woman (in the foreground) observes the situation. The most arresting aspect of the picture is the dominating, pale face of a woman in the right foreground of the picture. A careful analysis of the painting begins with the study... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This leaves the women looking like actresses preparing for a performance. Enhancing this feeling are both the hair–fixing scene in the mirror and the dramatic pose which occurs in the background. Even the seated woman's facial expression appears artificial and exaggerated. So the lighting, combined with pose and facial expression, depicts the women as actresses simply putting on an act. Toulouse–Lautrec again uses color and contrast in making the women appear ghost–like. Most obviously, the previously discussed issue of lighting causes their faces to appear pale. When displayed on a canvas filled with dingy hues, the white stands out and highlights their ghostliness. Beyond that, the women seem merely painted over the original scenery. It feels as though a piercing stare will cut right through the women and reveal the wood floor. This impression is accomplished, in part, by uniting a wrinkle in the foreground character's dress with a line in the floorboard. Even more strikingly, the dress of the woman posing in the background virtually fades into the floor. These effects drain the women of their substance, enhancing the feeling that they are simply paint on canvas–nothing more. In short, Toulouse–Lautrec curiously bestows a ghostly essence to his female characters. This careful study of Toulouse–Lautrec's portrayal of women allows insight into his theme for the painting. As shown earlier, these women form a striking combination of actress ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psychopathy and Crime Essay Psychopathy is a disease of the mind, in which the psychological state of someone has emotional or behavioral problems serious enough to require psychiatric evaluation. Psychopaths have no concern for the feelings of others and a complete disregard of any sense of social obligation. Psychopaths are characterized by lack of empathy, poor impulse control and manipulative behaviors. They use charm, manipulation, intimidation, and the use of severe to mild violence to satisfy their own needs. Psychopathy is derived from two Greek words: psych, meaning soul, and pathos, meaning suffering. They were once used to explain any form of mental illness. • 9. Who Is The Protagonist In The Great Gatsby In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, he presents a story set against the backdrop of the United States in the 1920s, a period in history that one would relate to lavish and excessive spending and materialism. To that end, he presents through the eyes of the narrator, Nick, some of the main characters, among them being Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby. Beginning with Tom, Daisy's very wealthy husband who attended college with Nick, he comes across as dominating and arrogant from his first appearance when Nick visits him at his house. This is further accentuated by his musculature and rough speaking voice. Beyond these characteristics, he is enthralled by some disturbing and racist opinions, as well as the fact that he is involved in an affair with Myrtle, a married woman, despite being married to Daisy. He is also known to physically abuse and assault women, such as Myrtle when she began talking about Daisy at a party. • 10. The Motif Of Love In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet Love can prove a strong and intense affection towards another person, however teens contain no experience whatsoever, therefore their 'love' proves merely lust. Romeo and Juliet presents a tragic love story, where two young teens fall in love, from opposing families, which results in both of their deaths. In the play, Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare, uses the repetition of beauty in order to develop a motif of superficial love. The use of this motif suggests that William Shakespeare looks to present the audience that physical attraction should not remain wholly necessary for romantic love. In Acts 1 and 2, William Shakespeare presents Romeo as a character attracted to someone by their looks rather than their personality. Romeo states,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Juliet asserts, "Lovers don't need the light to see each other; their love illuminates them" (iii, II, 8–9). Accordingly, Juliet adresses how the lovers' beauty makes it possible for them to see each other in the dark. The motif of superficial love helps the author further communicate the idea that Romeo and Juliet's relationship lacks patience. Due to this, beauty illustrates the foundation of their relationship, which represents an unformed reason to love one another. Paris says, "Your face is mine, and you have slandered it" (iv, I, 36). Paris states that now since he has the right to marry Juliet, he owns her face. Shakespeare reveals that Juliet is forced to marry Paris, although she does not like him. Her love truly can be considered for Romeo, however she cannot confess to her family that, when in fact, Shakespeare incorporates superficial love by wording that. If their love meant something true, they would not care about the consequences of loving each other, however they did not tell their families because of the feuds, which by given these points is why inferred that it can inform whether their love can consider itself as superficial. Every brain is biologically and chemically different, and how these chemicals react in your brain and body can have an effect on the person's characteristics. The two movies that I chose to watch were The Shawshank Redemption and American Psycho. In The Shawshank Redemption there is a clear case of a mentally healthy character and in American Psycho there is a very definitive sign of a character with a mental disorder. In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne is portrayed by Tim Robbins and in American Psycho, Patrick Bateman is played by Christian Bale. The Shawshank Redemption came out in 1994 and has been named one of the best movies to be produced. Shawshank provides a display of a mentally healthy character, Andy Dufresne, who was convicted for murder charges on his wife and her lover. Andy is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, so needless to say he will be spending a long time in prison. Before Andy was convicted, he was a hot shot banker who made a surplus of money but people also claim he fell out of love with his wife. • 12. The Great Gatsby Selfish Essay Despite her charm, the wealthy Daisy Buchanan proves to be a selfish and superficial character. In the beginning, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts Daisy as a delightful and innocent young woman whom Gatsby is in love with. With some time, however, through Nick's observations the readers realize that Daisy is merely stringing Gatsby along with no real intention on leaving her rich husband Tom. In the first years of Daisy and Gatsby's relationship, Gatsby had no real chance with Daisy because of his low financial status. • 13. The Great Gatsby Character Analysis In order to become a wealthy individual, you must have a wide range of characteristics shared amongst the billionaires of today and yesterday. People that have more than they can spend, share a lot of psychological traits and characteristics that are believed to be fundamental if you want to become rich. Most if not all of the psychological traits and characteristics shared amongst the richest of the rich are seen today as a socially wrong thing: lack of empathy, psychotic behavior, etc. The traits and characteristics that we consider inhumane or simply bad are often the tools utilized by individuals to become rich. Often time people believe this is a choice, but the reality is that this is simply the nature of their mental phycology, the way they are mentally wired. Scott Fitzgerald, in his book titled The Great Gatsby, creates a character named Gatsby that worked hard in order to become a very wealthy individual, but because of lack of the billionaire trait and characteristics, Gatsby more closely resembles the mentality that of the average person in a world of rich individuals. The Great Gatsby provides a window of the mentality of the average person through the actions of Gatsby. The Mask of Sanity: The Mental Disorders of Poets The Mask of Sanity: The Mental Disorders of Poets For more than 200 years, clinicians have recognized the existence of individuals who did not fit the established categories of mental disturbances by failing to show remorse or an understanding of the severity of their conditions (Cleckley, 1982). For the next two centuries, researchers would subsequently refine this nomenclature by including various types of antisocial and criminal behaviors that were characteristic of mentally disturbed individuals. In his book, The Mask of Sanity (1982), though, H. C. Cleckley maintained that psychopaths were not necessarily the product of deprived lives in the early years, but suggested that people who have some of the characteristics of psychopathic behaviors do not have the requisite insight into their disorder or their personal state of well–being to recognize them (Raine, 1993). According to Gao and Glenn (2009), "Cleckley's book, The Mask of Sanity, provided the first and classic description and interpretation of psychopathy and theorized that this form of personality disorders may be due to a biological deficit" (p. 813). To help distinguish between personality types, Cleckley (1982) defined "psychopathy" as "a personality disorder evidenced by a distinctive cluster of behaviors and inferred personality traits defined by the Hare Psychopathy Checklist–Revised" (p. 449). Cleckley (1941) also stated that the traits found in the psychopathy include: "lack of empathy, lack of guilt, shallow affect, and manipulation of others" (p. 1329). These results provide confirmatory evidence that "the lack of anxiety, guilt, and emotional tensions" are the best way to identify psychopaths (Kirkman, 2002). Carrie uses her natural beauty and charms to consume the goods Drouet's money provides, but Drouet only makes his money from moving goods not producing them. Potential buyers like Carrie with easily manipulible desires are also essential: without desire, the consumer economy stalls." Drouet is written like a character who might become someone like Willy Loman should he ever settle down and marry and raise children. This is because he is young and good–looking and can use his charms to woo consumers to purchase his products. Nevertheless, Drouet does not accept the realities of his situation. Like his clothes and manners, if he does not like reality he tries to modify it through a variety of means, from running away and denial to the pursuit of superficial pleasures as a means of escape. ... • 29. Psychopathy In The Sales Industry Case Study In today's competitive market place organisations, it takes even more effort to be trust between the prospective customer and seller. Most correct handling must be done in selling to the vendor managed to gain agreement and eventually convincing him to buy from him because the world is more cautious and reluctant to buy from anyone. О•mployers exploit their staff to have profit in the company. Of course, this is done in most companies and employers pressuring sellers for more sales so as earn more money. Sometimes the sellers going off limits to please their bosses but also to get paid because the seller pays on the basis of their sales. • 30. Flattery in Pride and Prejudice Essay Flattery in Pride and Prejudice Since its composition in 1797, Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice has enjoyed two centuries of literary esteem not because of its witty dialogue or its tantalizing plot, but because of its universal themes that allow modern readers to identify with early Victorian life. Although the novel focuses on the etiquette of courtship, related social rituals are also prevalent throughout the story. WilliamCollins, a rector in Pride and Prejudice, uses excessive flattery to persuade people to look upon him favorably. He even lavishly praises himself to enhance his self–esteem. Of the three distinct directions Collins aims his flattery, the most complex to explicate is arguably that praise he directs toward himself. In a letter to the Bennet family, he writes "I flatter myself that my present overtures of good–will are highly commendable...[and you will not] reject the offered olive branch" (67). In this introduction to Collins, he asserts his benevolence as nothing short of remarkable and immediately springs from that notion to presume it bears influence over others. His self–assuring antics appear in an argument later when he remarks "...I consider myself more fitted by education and habitual study to decide on what is right than a young lady like yourself" (106–107). Collins' self–directed flattery empowers him with decisive confidence that allows him to win logical disputes by default, no doubt bolstering his self–image and augmenting his probability for affluence. On numerous occasions, Collins asserts the importance of his appointment as rector in the community, implying that he thinks highly of the rigid demeanor required to fulfill the duties of his imminent position. ... • 31. Psychopathy Is a Necessary Study for the Criminal System... Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the most important clinical constructs of the 21st century (Hare, Clark, Grann, & Thornton, 2000, p. 623). Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred socially deviant behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to possess are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive, selfish, aggressive, lacking remorse, shame, feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors (Hare, & Neumann, 2006, p. 59–60). As well as, failure to accept responsibility for ones own actions, revocation of conditional release, criminal versatility, parasitic life style, callous/lack of empathy, poor behavior controls, promiscuous sexual relations, early behavior problems, many short–term marital relationships, juvenile delinquency, and a need for stimulation/prone to boredom (Hare et al., 2006 p. 63). Therefore, as a strength of the PCL–R system, unlike APD, an antisocial lifestyle is only part of the diagnostic criteria for psychopathy (Fine, & Kennett, 2004, p. 425). Where as psychometric analysis of the PCL–R consistently identifies two factors. One of the factors corresponds to personality features, such as lacking guilt or remorse, or a lack of empathy, while the other looks into features of antisocial lifestyles, such as impulsivity or poor behaviour controls (Fine & Kennett, 2004, p. 425). The PCL–R gives individuals that are being assessed in these traits and behaviors a score from a 3–point scale (0,1, 2) (Hare et al., 2006, p. 59). • 33. Gatsby Narcissism Analysis Millon's category of elitist narcissism will not be used in this essay because this type "amplifies an already inflated self–image" as opposed to negating feelings of inadequacy and inferiority (Millon, Personality Disorders 339). Millon states that this type of narcissism stems from a fear of "being ordinary" (Personality Disorders 339). In my analysis, I argue that Gatsby's and Gray's narcissism can be seen as a result of self–esteem issues, and that excludes the elitist narcissism. Before moving on to the analysis, I am going to provide a description of the three subtypes used in this essay. Millon writes that unprincipled narcissists have the self–confident behavior of the narcissist in combination with the abnormal behavior of "antisocial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Millon states that these narcissists augment their sense of narcissistic power with sexual conquests, and after having won others over they swiftly write off their lovers and continue their game elsewhere (Personality Disorders 339). The sexual exploits of amorous narcissists are short–lived, and last mostly one afternoon to only a few weeks. They normally view their partners as a temporary warm body that they can exploit before boredom overtakes them. Furthermore, amorous narcissists leave behind them a series of scandalous acts such as swindling, sexual abundance, pathological lying and fraud (Millon, Disorders of 411). Moreover, criticism or confrontations are not likely to change their ways as they will simply dismiss these as a result of jealousy by inferior people (Millon, Personality Disorders 339). • 35. Differences Between The Book And The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener The Constant Gardener, which is one of the greatest movies I have ever seen, is not fiction. After watching the movie, if you search the title on the internet, you will know the shocking fact that this is a real story. The Constant Gardener originated from the novel The Constant Gardener written by John le CarrГ© in 2001, based on a real–life case in Kano, Nigeria, related to medical experimentation in the 1990s. Therefore, both the novel and the movie are mainly depicting such a careless, indiscrete medical experimentation, with a few changes such as a change of location and change of the medicine's name. Taking off these superficial alterations, the difference between the real case andThe Constant Gardener–including both novel and movie―is virtually none. Back to the movie, we can see a low–level British diplomat Justin Quayle is the main character in this movie. One day, his wife Tessa was found dead, Justin realized Tessa kept from Justin her secret that she investigated a suspicious drug trial in Kenya and tried to expose it. Because of her attempt to uncover the malpractices of an influential and powerful pharmaceutical company, she and her colleague Arnold are brutally murdered. • 36. Examples Of Daisy In The Great Gatsby In The Great Gatsby, written by Fitzgerald, Gatsby releases an ultimately superficial persona to the world due to his obsession with Daisy. Through the examination of Gatsby's smile, one can see that his charm is merely a faГ§ade hiding his past. The subtle descriptions of Gatsby's morals, in relation to the effect that Daisy has on him, demonstrates that Gatsby is not all that 'great'. Through Gatsby's attempt to achieve the love of the unattainable Daisy, he never realizes that Daisy being 'nice' masks the pain she causes him. Because Gatsby's hopelessly romantic nature was caused by meeting Daisy, Gatsby was later portrayed as superficially charming and well–poised, thus suggesting that Daisy was the main reason for his questionable character. Although her many past relationships made Daisy seem unattainable in Gatsby's eyes, the differences between the social class of Gatsby and Daisy led to Gatsby's misjudgement in morality. Even though Gatsby acknowledges the fact that he does not have the "right" to love Daisy due to his social class, Gatsby puts up a faГ§ade to attain Daisy's love and thus hides his past (149). For instance, Gatsby's judgement on morals is skewed when he is described as "[ravenous]' and "[scrupulous]," demonstrating that Gatsby is greedily taking Daisy and "giving her a sense of security" when he could not sustain such reassurance (147). In general, Daisy's "value" controls Gatsby's morality as he is forced to change in order to win Daisy's love (149). • 37. Psychopath Essay What is a psychopath? Psychopathy is usually defined as a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behaviour, lack of empathy and remorse and bold superficial behaviour. A checklist developed by Dr Bob Hare identifies the key traits of a psychopath which is used universally to identify psychopaths. The main features of psychopaths include: Superficial charm Grandiose sense of self worth Pathological lying Cunning/manipulative Lack of remorse/guilt Emotionally shallow Callous/lack of empathy Failure to accept responsibility for own actions Lack of realistic long–term goals Impulsivity Introduction Upon deciding what sentences to give to criminal psychopaths, we must consider multiple factors. Firstly I will discuss the issues with the classification and diagnosis of psychopathy, the importance being that if the wrong diagnosis is given it could cause a problem with criminal judgements. The management and treatment of psychopaths must also be examined, exploring their reactions and responses to different types of environments and treatments and significantly their likelihood of reoffending if released. Finally it must be decided whether psychopaths should be held criminally responsible for their actions (and therefore sentenced to prison) or be entitled to the insanity defence and be sent to a psychiatric hospital to be treated, where the psychopath would usually spend longer time than if they were sentenced to prison. If a psychopath is guilty of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Beauty Pageants : A Little Girl 's Psyche A little girl's psyche is extremely fragile; it cracks under the pressure of being perfect and is no match for the insanely high standards of the pageant world. A 2007 study conducted by the American Psychological Association found a link between the seemingly fun and harmless beauty pageants and the development of low self–esteem, eating disorders, and depression. In addition to being mentally damaging, pageants are also damaging to the wallets of parents. Families may spend thousands of dollars on artificial tanner, teeth whitening treatments and glitzy pageant attire. Beauty pageants send out a wrong, toxic message to young minds. "Pageant girls are taught from a very early age that what is most critically important is their physical appearance along with a superficial and erotized charm. They are presented in a hyper–sexualized manner." (Hollandsworth 8). With the pressure to be perfect at an all time high as young girls are bombarded every day with images of unrealistically beautiful and thin women in today's media, the effects of childhood beauty pageants are damaging and the practice should be banned entirely. Even without beauty pageants, the amount of pressure girls feel to conform to society's standards of beauty is immeasurable. When girls participate in pageants, the pressure is multiplied as they trot around on stage being judged on only their outward appearance. "The message these little girls take away is that their natural beauty isn't enough– that their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Nightcrawler A Sociopath Analysis It was a pleasant surprise seeing that NightCrawler was one of the film choices for this psychopathy paper, I saw it in theaters when it was originally released and it has been one of my all–time favorites ever since. Even after rewatching it countless times since, the movie still never fails to keep my attention. One thing is for sure, Jake Gyllenhaal's character, Louis Bloom, is a bona fide psychopath. I will go into greater detail about the reasoning for this later, after discussing what exactly being a psychopath entails and the different traits that are used to characterize them. Believe it or not, many people in today's society cannot really distinguish between the two terms, psychopath and sociopath. Back in the early 1800s, the doctors that were working with mental patients began to realize that some of their patients who appeared outwardly normal had what they termed a "moral depravity" or "moral insanity". These patients seemed to have no sense of the rights of other people, or even of ethics in general. The term psychopath was initially applied to these individuals around the beginning of the twentieth century. In the 1930s, the term switched to sociopath to focus more heavily on the detrimental effect that these people can have on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
