“Restorative justice offers our generation an opportunity to believe in the power of humanity and human connection in an equally ancient and innovative way”
Here is how it works at Stomping Ground:
When a circle gets called typically it is because there is an argument or a conflict that someone, could be a person directly involved, or a concerned friend thinks warrants a more facilitated conversation. There are some basic agreements in a circle that get outlined as a foundation for the discussion. They are as follows:
1 - One Mic. everyone has a chance to talk. Don't talk over one another.
2. - Trust each other. Ask for what you need, know that a circle is confidential
3- Choice is Key. None of this works if you have not chosen to be there. Circles and control don't mix. We can offer to talk things out as a solution but can’t force it down anyone throat, then we are right back where we started with “I told you so”... At Stomping Ground everyone who comes to camp knows that part of our curriculum is learning to see conflict in a different way. We ask that all campers and staff talk through conflict when it comes up. But we don't force people to work through stuff right away. It can be really painful and ineffective to talk about conflict if you are still fuming. Or feeling stuck in the need to prove the other person wrong, or make them pay. It's ok to circle back around, just as long as eventually we come together to sort out what happened in an effort to learn and reestablish trust.
Yes!
Over the last 4 years more kids ask for circles and more staff use circles as a tool
Build community, helps kids/ staff think about conflict differently
