2. Cairn India – CSR Initiatives
Respect | Relationships | Responsibility
Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes strike a balance between
addressing the unique needs of various communities while partnering the state and
central agencies to help strive for the betterment of the social indicators of the
regions.
This journey from micro to macro makes the CSR initiatives
more effective and sustainable.
For every life touched there is a larger story of the community and the village.

Barmer, a frontier district of the Thar Desert, owing to the
extremities of weather, was still largely untouched by development.
The total population of the district is about 2 million with a literacy
rate of 59%. In the midst of this hostile terrain, Barmer was known
for the entrepreneurial spirit of its people to create art infused with
vibrancy and joy. But, it was the discovery of one of the largest
onshore hydrocarbon reserves in the country that completely
changed the fate of this otherwise non-descript place.
Rajasthan has one of the highest livestock populations in the
country. Despite this, the milk production in Rajasthan is very low
due to extreme climatic conditions, poor technology and
nonexistent market linkages.

Enterprise Centre
Meagre agricultural production, seasonal migration of youth in
search of jobs, lack of any major industrial activity, and
comparatively low education levels had resulted in very poor
availability of skilled and semi-skilled manpower from the local
community in Barmer. The people of the region, once known for
their exquisite craftsmanship, were faced with the challenge of
moulding these skills to create products that would sell in the
urban markets and then find suitable market linkages to exhibit
their work.
Cairn ‘s Enterprise Centre addresses multiple issues prevailing in
the region. It not only trains the locals for the requisite skills, but
also identifies suitable markets and urban forums for these local
craftsmen to exhibit their work and find prospective buyers for the
same. In order to create income generation opportunities for
women, trainings for embroidery, patch-work, tie-&-dye, ropes
and twine making, key-chain assembling etc. are provided.
The process involves active involvement and buy-back
arrangements with the relevant market linkages. Enterprise
Centre also helps in providing information and expertise on
business practices to local MSMEs, supporting them to become potential suppliers and service providers to various business
ventures in the region. It helps in the dissemination of information regarding contracts, tenders and other relevant business
documents.

Women in the region have exceptional creative skills, but due to lack of proper market linkages, they were deprived of appropriate
income generation opportunities.
