The agogo is the oldest Brazilian instrument used to create samba music, consisting of single or multiple bells of different sizes that produce differently pitched notes depending on which bell is hit. The shekere originated from West Africa as a large dried gourd with beads woven into a net covering that is shaken or hit against hands to make music. The Alfaia is a Macaiba wood drum with animal skin that is tensioned through ropes to play northeastern folk rhythms and dances in Brazil.
