WHAT IS FOOD ADVERTISING?

ad·ver·tis·ing: The activity or profession of producing advertisements for commercial
products or services.

food: Any nutritious substance that people eat or drink in order to maintain life and
growth.

Therefore, food advertising can be defined as: the act of
producing advertisements for NUTRITIOUS substances
that people eat or drink.

....Accurately defined? You be the judge.

Food advertisements are all around us.
   What consumers eat is largely
    influenced by what they see!

           Did you know...
Most food advertising is geared toward
         children and teens.
CRITICISM?

Childhood obesity has tripled over the past 30
years. Many experts believe advertising geared
toward children has had a large impact on this
                 epidemic.
THE COST?

In 2011, $1.6 Billion was the annual cost for online and TV
advertisements geared towards children alone.
THE SOLUTION?

 Less of this in
advertisements...   ...and more of this!
ANOTHER SOLUTION?

Truthful advertising! Studies have shown that
 people will still purchase unhealthy foods if
the advertiser is upfront about the pleasure
 versus health aspect of the food. They will,
       however, eat it in moderation.
