3. WHAT IS RURAL DEVELOPMENT?
•Rural development is the process of
improving the quality of life and
economic well being of people
living in rural areas.
• Developing is very important for
increasing a country’s economy.
• Agriculture is the Major source of
livelihood.
4. WHEN DID RURAL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM WAS STARTED?
• The government of India launched
the integrated rural development
program (IRDP) in 1978 and
implemented it in 1980. The
program’s goal is to provide poor
people with employment
opportunities as well as
opportunities to develop their living

STAGE 1
PRE INDEPENDENCE ERA (1866-1947)
1. Shriniketan experiment in Bengal.
2. Gandhian constructive programme.
3. Grow more food campaign.
STAGE 2
POST INDEPENDENCE ERA (1947-1953)
1. ITDP – Integrated tribal development programme
2. CDP - Community development programme
3. ICDP - Intensive cattle development project.
6. SHRINIKETAN EXPERIMENT IN BENGAL - 1920
• Shri rabindranath tagore began this project of
village development in this area.
• With the help of sociologist Shri.L.M Hurst.
• Shri tagore thought that if some villages were
developed ,the other villages will get
inspiration and like that the whole country
would be developed.
Main objectives of this project were
1. To increase the knowledge of rural people.

7. GANDHIAN CONSTRUCTIVE
PROGRAMME IN GUJARAT – 1920.
• Mahatma Gandhi was a great social worker and he
started this programme in 1920.
• He began this welfare project SEVA GRAM
• To create patriotism among people and they must
think that this is their own country.
• For fulfilling this objective,gandhiji made a
programme,which became famous as GANDHIAN
CONSTRUCTIVE PROGRAMME. The
Main objectives of this project were
1. To use khadi clothes.
2. To introduce health programme.
3. Women welfare.
8. GROW MORE FOOD CAMPAIGN – 1942.
• Before we got independence,a first national
wide program was launched in mid of 1940s.
• 16 October 1942 the whole east coast Bengal
and Orissa was hit by a cyclone and the rice
producing areas are failed.
Main objective of this campaign was to fulfill the
need of food which had been created due to
second world war.
• Agricultural departments of state government
organised this campaign and distributed new
seeds and fertilizers among the farmers.
9. ITDP – INTEGRATED TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMME – 1985.
• The programme on ITDP under tribal sub plan is
being implemented since the fifth five year plan.
• The programme was evaluated by the
programme evaluation organisation (PEO) in
1996.
Main objectives of this pogramme were
1. Reducing poverty
2. Improving educational status
3. Transport facility
4. Electricity
10. CDP – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAMME – 1952.
• This is the major rural development
programme launched after independence in 2nd
October 1952.
• This programme developing agriculture, animal
husbandry, education, housing,etc.
• This programme Aimed at socio economic
transformation of the rural people.
11. ICDP – INTENSIVE CATTLE DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT – (1963-1964).
• With the aim of increase milk production,the first
ICDP ,as per government of India model scheme
established in Gujarat since 1965.
• ICDP provides artificial insemination.
• Sexual health related all the cases of animal are
given free treatment by arranging one sexual
health camps (SHC).
• Veterinary aid and disease control.
• With the economic growth of the state’s livestock

• Rural development programmes aim to reduce
poverty, unemployment ,basic needs , such as
food, shelter, clothing

BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN PEOPLE.
