Location - Hopi
!   Lived in Arizona
!   Southwestern USA
Location -Fox
!   Lived in Michigan and
Wisconsin
!   In the Eastern
Woodlands area
Environment -Hopi
!   This was a harsh
environment to live in.
!   Most of this area is dry
desert.
!   There is little rain or
other sources of water.
!   There is not much
vegetation, and only
small animals.
Environment -Fox
!   The Eastern Woodlands
is mostly forest. The
forest provides many
resources.
!   There are many lakes
and rivers for fish and
drinking water.
!   The woods are full of
animals to hunt and food
to gather.
Clothing -Hopi
!   To protect themselves
from the sun,they made
clothes from cotton they
grew and wove into
cloth.
!   Women wore mantas
which are dresses that
fastened at one
shoulder to stay cool.
!   Everyone wore deer
skin moccasins to
protect their feet from
the hot, hard ground.
Clothing -Fox!   Women wore
wraparound skirts.
!   Men only wore
breechcloth and
leggings in the warm
summers.
!   In cold weather they
wore ponchos and hats
made from deer skin
and otter fur.
!   They also wore
moccasins.
Food -Hopi
!   Because there was not
much food for hunting or
gathering, the Hopis
were expert farmers.
!   They grew corn, beans,
squash, cotton, and
tobacco using irrigation
and dams.
!   They also raised
turkeys.
Food-Fox!   The woods provided
much of what they
needed.
!   The Fox hunted game,
mostly deer and buffalo.
!   They gathered greens,
nuts, berries, and
honey.
!   They trapped beavers
and speared fish.
!   They also grew corn,
beans and squash in
small gardens.
Shelter-Hopi!   Because there was not
wood available for
shelter, the Hopi made
pueblo houses out of
adobe, which is clay and
straw baked into bricks.
!   Pueblo houses are like
apartment buildings and
have many different
units built on several
levels.
!   Each family had their
own unit.
!   They used ladders to
get to the upper levels.
Shelter-Fox
!   Because there was so
much wood available,
the Fox built wigwams.
!   Wigwams are wooden
frames covered with
sheets of birchbark. It is
tied on using rope or
strips of wood.
Tools/Weapons -Hopi
!   Hopi hunters used bows
and arrows.
!   Because they did so
much farming, the Hopi
had many farming tools
made from bone and
wood.
!   They used looms to
weave cotton .
Tools/Weapons - Fox
!   Because there was so
much wood, they used it
for many things. Fox
hunters made bows and
arrows and spears.
!   They made large bark
bins to store food.
!   They used bone tools to
grind corn.
Art/Music - Hopi
!   Hopi are famous for
kachina dolls.
!   They made silver
earrings, bracelets, and
rings.
!   They make pottery and
baskets.
Art/Music-Fox
!   Fox are known for their
porcupine quill
embroidery. Porcupine
quills were softened,
dyed and woven into
leather or birchbark.
These materials were
unique to this area.
!   They also make pottery
and bead work.
Beliefs-Hopi
!   The Hopi had many
legends. Story telling is
very important to them
!   Kachina dolls represent
religious figures.
Beliefs-Fox
!   The Fox Tribe believed
everything had magic.
!   Children were taught to
find a relationship with
something in nature, like
an animal.
Government-Hopi
!   Hopis had theocratic
government. This
means the head priest is
the chief.
Government-Fox
!   TheFox tribe had two
chiefs.
!   The peace chief, who
was born into the
position, was in charge
of domestic affairs.
!   The war chief, who was
elected, was in charge
of the military.
Warfare-Hopi
!   Because they lived in a
area without many
resources, there were
not many other tribes
around to compete with,
so the Hopi were quite
peaceful.
!   The Hopis traded with
other tribes for items
they needed.
Warfare-Fox
!   Because they lived in an area with so many desirable
resources, the Fox had to compete with other tribes
frequently.
!   Although they sometimes traded with other tribes, usually
they fought each other. The Fox had many enemies. This
is why they needed a war chief and an army of warriors.
Important People - Hopi
!   Chief Loloma supported
public education for
Hopi children.
Important People - Fox
!   Black Hawk was a
warrior that fought for
the British.
Conclusion -HopiThe environment each tribe lived in, played a
big role in shaping their culture.
The Hopi lived in a harsh environment with few
resources. It was a challenge to live and there
were not many tribes that choose to live in this
area. This made the tribe value community and
sharing. They had to work together to survive.
This is reflected in their homes, where they all
lived together in pueblos. They raised crops
together as a group. They were peaceful and
traded with other tribes to get the things they
needed.
Conclusion - Fox
The Fox tribe lived in an area that had many
desirable resources, that other people wanted.
This caused them to be less trustful and more
aggressive. You can see this reflected in their
lifestyle. The Fox built individual houses, rather
than shared housing like the Hopi. They lived
more separate lives. They had individual small
gardens rather than large community fields.
They elected a war chief and had an army to
fight the many people that raided them and tried
to take their things.
Which Would I Choose?
If I had to choose, I would live with the Hopi
tribe. The Fox tribe has more food and
resources but their lives were much more
violent. Although the daily life of the Hopi was
more difficult, I would enjoy the way they work
and live together.

  • 25. Conclusion - Fox The Fox tribe lived in an area that had many desirable resources, that other people wanted. This caused them to be less trustful and more aggressive. You can see this reflected in their lifestyle. The Fox built individual houses, rather than shared housing like the Hopi. They lived more separate lives. They had individual small gardens rather than large community fields. They elected a war chief and had an army to fight the many people that raided them and tried to take their things.
  • 26. Which Would I Choose? If I had to choose, I would live with the Hopi tribe. The Fox tribe has more food and resources but their lives were much more violent. Although the daily life of the Hopi was more difficult, I would enjoy the way they work and live together.
