MERGEFORMAT March 13, 2011
Interviewing Professionals in the nursing field
Growing up I always knew I would wanted to do something that I loved to do, which was take care of people. When my family was sick the first thing I would do was to go to their house or the hospital to make sure they are taken care of. As I made the decision that I was going to become a Nurse, I joined the Medical Technology program at my High School. My senior year was my favorite year because we actually got to work with patients and making sure they were taken care of. That’s when I really decided that Nursing was what I was supposed to do. After my senior year was over, and TCP was completed, we could become a STNA, a State Tested Nursing Assistant. I decided to go down that road; I now work at Browning Masonic Community as a Nursing Assistant. It’s the best job in this entire world. I have fallen in love with making sure that the residents are taken care of and they are as comfortable as they can be. When you have a big heart, you end up falling in love with the residents. They take you in just like a mother, and as a woman with a huge heart, I make sure that I can do anything I possibly can to make sure they are as happy as they can be. I know that I would want people to do that for me I was in their shoes. Not only do I love the Nursing Field but I am also interested in the Pharmacy Technician field as well. They can do almost the same things that STNA’s can do along the lines of prepping IV tubes, checking the drops in an IV and many other things, but there are also major differences. I chose to interview a Nurse who worked at St. Ursula Infirmary and a Pharmacy Technician who works at Aring’s Compound Corner.
As I grew up in my mother’s house, I watched her become something that I was extremely interested in as well. She used to be a hair dresser at David Broadway Salon, and she liked her work. But she found something that she loves better. My mom, Kathy Layman, became a Pharmacy Technician. They can do a lot of the same things that STNA’s can do like I have stated before. The thing that really interests me is they make their own capsules and they compound medications fit for a certain patient. When she first started at Aring’s Kathy didn’t have to be a certified pharmacy tech. As she continued working there the government made it mandatory that all Pharmacy Techs were to be certified to work in a Pharmacy. My mom knew a lot about her work and what she was doing, when she was given a pre test she didn’t do very well at all. She did everything she could to make sure she passed. She took her State Test and passed with flying colors. She works at Aring’s Compound Corner, which is a compound pharmacy and they compound hormones in the form of capsules, creams, troches, and liquids. They also compound drugs for animals such as dogs and cats. She is responsible for making the compounded drugs and everything that involves with the making of that certain drug such as math, and measuring. She is also responsible for answering phones, and waiting on the patients that come into the pharmacy.
The mission and purpose of her work is to compound drugs that help the patients with what they need. Such as progesterone, testosterone, and many other compounded drugs.
Aring’s Compound Corner used to be Drug Corner, and then the owner, Bill Aring decided to move to McCord and Central. The population that is served is people who need medication, and compounded medication. The services provided is receiving the specific medication that you need depending on the patients prescription.
As I have said before there are many similarities that Pharmacy Technicians can do as well as State Tested Nursing Assistants. There are many differences as well. STNA’s can’t make medication like Certified Pharmacy Technicians. As I interviewed my mother on the certain topics of her work I found the job to be incredibly stressful but also rewarding because they get the satisfaction of knowing what they are making is helping their patient. I have also learned through this interview that you have to be very smart and very focused when conducting this type of work.
The next interview that I conducted was a nurse that worked at St. Ursula Infirmary as a Nurse. Her name is Caroline Franklin who I am proud to call my Grandmother. My grandmother went to school to become a LPN at a small community college in her home town. She worked with Nuns that were unable to do everyday normal activities such as brush their teeth, help get dressed and many other things. Her responsibility was to make sure that the patients were taken care of and they were turned every so often due to bed sore possibilities.
The mission of her work was to take care of Nuns who lost their ability to handle their ADL’s, which is Activities of Daily Life. The purpose was to take care of the patients like she would want to be taken care of herself one day. The history of the St. Ursula Infirmary was an older building that housed Nuns of older age. She stated she can’t remember that much about it due to her old age, she said you could call her one of the nuns.
As I interviewed Caroline, I found that LPN’s can do a lot of the same work as STNA’s as well as Pharmacy Technicians. I still have not decided for sure what field I will be going to, I really would enjoy both so I am really contemplating majoring in Nursing and double majoring in Pharmacy Technician. I still have not decided about my double major, but I know for a fact that Nursing is what I am meant to pursue. This project really helped me realize that Nursing and Pharmacy Technicians would be a great job and I would incredibly enjoy working in both fields.
