“It is an end of era for us. Her death has left a sudden emptiness that is
difficult to explain,“ said a teary-eyed KEM Hospital nurse, standing metres
away from Aruna Shanbaug's funeral pyre at the Bhoiwada crematorium.
It was an unwritten rule that every nurse who is assigned Ward No 4 had to
attend to that special patient. The drill was meticulous. Aruna had to be
given a sponge bath, mouth wash and fed food with clockwork preci fed food
with clockwork precision not once but several times a day. The routine was
followed by thousands of nurses who studied and worked in KEM since 1973.
“We take it as a compliment that she never had a single bedsore despite
lying in a vegetative state for over four decades. We kept her clean and dry
by sponging and powdering every few hours. We took care of her just like a
child,“ said senior nurse Sanjeevani Jadhav . An emotional Jadhav said from
Tuesday , that routine will stop. The first bedsore she ever had was in the last
week of her life when she was critical in the ICU.

For matron Arundhati Vellhar, it was never extra work to stop by and
greet Aruna during her rounds. She said nurses would often pack extra
servings of fish for lunch or dinner. “She loved fish and mangoes. There
used to be this look of satisfaction whenever we gave her that,“ said
Vellar. Aruna, though, stopped ingesting so lid food around three years
ago and was fed with tubes since.
During festivals, a fund would always be set aside to buy Aruna clothes
or bed sheets. “We wanted the world around her to be colorful,“ she
said. A piped music system was fitted into her room that occasionally
played devotional songs. “The information that she loved music or fish
was passed on to every new batch of nurses,“ said a senior nurse.

The nurses, therefore, did not like it when GSB Seva Mandal offered to
pay for her final rites. “Why should an outsider pay for her cremation
when we took care of her for so many years,“ said Vellar, who
personally contributed Rs 10,000 for the rites.
Surekha Salunkhe, who acquired her nursing degree from KEM and was
associated with the hospital only between 1980 and '84, said, “She was
family to all of us,“ she said, adding the incident had started discussions
on women's security . KEM nurses have thwarted every attempt to
euthanize or discharge her. KEM hospital Dean Dr Avinash Supe called
their service “one of the greatest examples of caring for a colleague
who was the victim of a brutal sexual assault.“
