Pick one to write a narrative on. What
do the people in the image see, hear,
taste and feel? What are they thinking
about?
What is art and who decides?
????????????????
Art is….
• Constantly adding to its definition. ART can be more that 6.8 billion
things.
• FORM AND CONTENT.
• THERE IS A HUMAN IMPLUSE TO MAKE ART
• To create order and structure.
• To create Meaningful images.
• Art can be used to commemorate or eternalize events
• Some artists work through their emotions by making art and the
finished work will reflect that emotion.
• Other artists make an image with the hope of creating an emotional
response from the viewer.
Art Can Be….
• Many things, who am I to say what is art and
what is not?
Duchamp: Fountain 1917
Rational of “Fountain”
• “Readymades” were somewhat of a calculated attack on the
most basic conventions of art at the time. People argued that
is was plagiarism, “a plain piece of pluming.”
• Duchamp was involved in a cultural movement called “Dada,”
an Anti-Rational and in anti-art movement.
• He defended the work of R. Mutt by publishing a statement in
a magazine saying.
• “Whether Mr. Mutt with his own hands made the fountain or
not has no importance. He CHOSE it. He took an ordinary
article of life, placed it so that its useful significance
disappeared under the new title and point of view--- he
Created a new thought for that object”
• This Concept alone changed the way people
looked at what art was and what art could
now be.
IS this Art?
Is destruction a form of creation? Is
this art?
One is worth Millions. Can you tell
which one it is? Why?
