Introduction to Poverty

Poverty is a denial of choices and opportunities and the lack of
basic capacity to participate effectively in society, not having enough food and
clothing for a family, not having a school or clinic to go to, not having the land
on which to grow one’s food or a job to earn one’s living, or not having access to
credit. It also includes low incomes and the inability to acquire the basic goods
and services necessary for survival with dignity and encompasses low levels of
health and education, poor access to clean water and sanitation, inadequate
physical security, lack of voice, and insufficient capacity and opportunity to better
                                       one’s life.
Impacts of Poverty
3. Housing
Poverty increases the risk of homelessness. With the absence of a proper place
to concentrate and focus on their studies, this also affects their success in their
education.
4. Hunger
Poverty leads to the people being more vulnerable to increase in food prices,
causing them to be affected in their quality of their lives. Every year nearly 11
million children living in poverty die before their fifth birthday. 1.02 billion
people go to bed hungry every night.
History of Poverty

For most of history poverty had been mostly accepted as inevitable as traditional
modes of production were insufficient to give an entire population a comfortable
standard of living. After the industrial revolution, mass production in factories
made wealth increasingly more inexpensive and accessible. Of more importance
is the modernization of agriculture, such as fertilizers, in order to provide enough
                             yield to feed the population.
