Details:
Select a culture that has an established community/presence in your area/city/state. You will
focus your research throughout the semester on learning about this group.
Create a presentation using PowerPoint or another tool with your instructor’s approval. A
minimum of fifteen slides are required for this assignment. A script/notes must be included in
your presentation. The PowerPoint should include the following:
1. 1. Explain the core values and history of the cultural group and describe how the culture
became established in your area (e.g., what events, motivations, persons were influential
in their establishment in your area?) Include a timeline of significant events (be selective
– keep the timeline minimal).
2. 2. Describe how this group has shaped the culture of the area.
3. 3. Research and describe opportunities in which this culture could be experienced locally
(e.g., festival, store, restaurant, cultural center, etc.).

Details:
This assignment builds on Part 1. You will continue to focus your research on the cultural group
you selected in Topic 1. Write 500-750 words in response to the following:
1. 1. Clarify the definitions as well as compare and contrast the concepts of stereotyping and
ethnocentrism.
2. 2. Find concrete examples that show how this group is represented by local and/or
national media (This could include Comic Strips, Newspaper Articles, Advertisements,
TV Shows, etc.). Give specific examples of stereotyping and ethnocentrism.
3. 3. Outline concrete examples of how these media caricatures influence people’s
perceptions of this culture. Next, explain how these perceptions (as elements of the media
consumer’s worldview) might influence their attitudes and behaviors when interacting
with someone from that culture.

Details:
In 750-1,000 words, research and explain what factors influence the individual and collective
identities of members of your selected cultural group. Consider the following examples of
important factors to address:
1. 1. How do people from the cultural group communicate their identities through their
architecture or how they organize their private and public environments?
2. 2. What is unique about their art or other mass mediated communications (e.g.,
magazines, books, films, comics)? You may choose to explain an individual’s work or a
message/artifact created by a group or organization.
3. 3. How do they establish and manifest roles in relationships?
Give concrete examples to illustrate your selected culture’s value orientations and explain how
these value orientations influence the group’s communication behaviors. Include:

in order to understand the culture (syntactics, semantics, phronology, pragmatics).

2. 2. Take field notes in which you describe the verbal communication traits of the people
you observe in the service (e.g., what does it sound like? What are unusual words,
phrases, or idioms used?).
3. 3. Write down as many phrases or utterances you can. Explain how the verbal
communication traits you wrote about in point 2 differ from the verbal communication
traits of your own cultural groups.
4. 4. Summarize your experience, incorporating scholarly articles that address the
relationship between verbal communication traits and cultural distinctiveness

8. Details:
Choose a film that represents interactions between at least two distinct cultures. The film must be
approved by the instructor.
1. 1. As you watch the film, take notes on the nonverbal cues that the characters in the film
exhibit. Be as descriptive as possible when describing the nonverbal codes you witness
throughout the film.
2. 2. Explain how the nonverbal cues you witnessed in the film compare to the types of
nonverbal communication codes used by the culture you have chosen to examine this
semester, cite one to two scholarly sources to support your insights.
3. 3. Describe a faux pas that you witnessed in the film. To spot a faux pas, look for
nonverbal or verbal communication that is not received well by members of the native
culture.

Details:
Find a recent situation in which a conflict related to cultural differences occurred. You can find
the situation by asking a friend if they have had any experiences, looking into the news/media for
an example, or relating a personal experience you witnessed. In a total of 500-750 words, write
out the details of the conflict as communicated by the source of the story.

9. 1. 1. Based on your research in intercultural communication, explain why you think the
conflict arose (reference at least one source from the textbook and/or scholarly articles on
intercultural conflict to back up your recommendations).
2. 2. Explain the role of mass media and/or new media in shaping the conflict (e.g., Is one
communicator responding to a negative, stereotyped view of the other?). Explain the
connections between the communication behaviors of each individual in this conflict
scenario and their differing worldviews.
3. 3. Write out a consultation (250-500 words from the total), outlining what the
communicators in the conflict scenario need to know or do to best handle the conflict. Be
specific in your recommendations and justify them with scholarly evidence (when you
justify, explain what ethical considerations should be taken into account when handling
the situation described in the case study). Two academic sources are required for the

Details:
Think about a time when you were immersed in a new culture or co-culture.
Write a 250-500 word reflection, addressing the following:
1. 1. Explain the circumstances surrounding your immersion in a new culture/co-culture.
What was the reason for your trip/experience?
2. 2. Identify the stages of culture shock present in your experience of the new culture/co-
culture.
3. 3. Explain how you tried to cope with the culture shock.

based upon what you learned about culture shock in this topic.

Details:
Compile parts 1-6 of your research project into a presentation. Your presentation can be
constructed using one of the following formats: a video presentation, PowerPoint, or Prezi (or a
format not listed, as long as it is approved by your instructor). A minimum of 20 slides are
required for this assignment. A script/notes must be included in your presentation. Be creative.
Just make sure that you include the following sections:

In the conclusion of your presentation, include a reflection on what you learned from this culture
and explain why you think your intercultural communication research is an important part of
minimizing the negative effects of culture shock associated with the culture you studied.
Three to five sources are required for this assignment. Each student will be assigned a
presentation to review. Each student will post their peer review in the discussion forum posted in
the course. The instructor will provide further instructions for the peer review.
