Matt 12:7 But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire
compassion, and not a sacrifice,’ you would not have
condemned the innocent.

8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”9 Departing from
there, He went into their synagogue. 10 And a man was there
whose hand was withered. And they questioned Jesus, asking,
“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse
Him. 11 And He said to them, “What man is there among you
who has a sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he
not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable
then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on
the Sabbath.” 13 Then He *said to the man, “Stretch out your
hand!” He stretched it out, and it was restored to normal, like
the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and conspired against

looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him

to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of
everyone.”
4 Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to
do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained
silent.
5 He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at
their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. 6
Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the
Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

what they might do to Jesus.

3. In Mark 3 Jesus is angry with the Pharisees. In Luke 6 the
Pharisees are angry with Jesus. What are the right and
wrong reasons for righteous anger/

9. BACKGROUND
The man standing before Jesus, as per history was a
construction worker.
Herod built the temple and called for construction workers
who were skilled in various aspects.
They were asked to work on Sunday.
After the temple was built, the Jewish leaders cut off their
hands to penalize them for working on Sabbath.
Now they were looking for a reason to destroy Jesus

DESTRUCTION
The Pharisees cut the hand.
In righteous zeal they were doing Satan’s work of destruction
They cut the family off
They cut the man from worshipping normally – he had to take
back seat.
Now they were conniving to cut off Jesus – God Himself

11. BACKGROUND -
RESTORATION
Jesus knew their intentions, yet continued His acts of mercy.
He goes to God’s house though it is polluted with corrupt
leaders.
He contradicted their authority by demonstrating true
leadership
He asked the man to stand in front for all to see.
He restored the hand.
He still tries to teach the corrupt leaders God’s love

Jesus continued to teach and heal in the synagogue
Inspite of poor leadership
Inspite of hardness of heart and opposition

He was angry but more so, deeply distressed.
As Lord He had the right to be angry at his children being
abused by those He trusted
Do we grieve at others’ hardness?

SOUNDNESS
Luke 6:8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to

listen to Jesus

When we stand up for Christ and show His love,
There will be healing
And opposition
We have to be prepared to face both.
