The seals in Revelation outline the history of the church from its beginning until the Second Coming, following the same pattern as Matthew 24. The first seal represents the early, victorious church. The second seal symbolizes persecution by the Roman Empire. The third seal depicts a period of corruption, hunger, and poverty. The fourth seal portrays a time of spiritual death. The fifth seal shows souls under the altar of those martyred for their faith. The signs of the sixth seal were fulfilled literally in order. We are currently within the period of the sixth seal.
