2. Long Shots
A long shot shows the whole of a persons
body.
Long shots are used in magazines when
the person is holding a prop, such as the
guitar in the example at the top.
They are also used for interesting poses like
Jessie J‟s pose which is eventuated and
bold. The person focusses on her body
The bottom image is a long shot to create
the effect of Florence being incredibly tall
in the quake of the monuments of the
world, this links to the article which is about
being a front woman. The picture has
metaphorical significance.
3. Mid Shot
The mid shot is the most used camera shot for
front covers and it is used because the viewer
of the magazine can see the model‟s
clothing, accessories and body language
while also seeing the person‟s facial expression
in detail.
In most mid shots on cover pages the
subject will look directly at the camera to
involve the viewer in what they see.
Mid shots can involve props such as the top
one, and the clothing fits the genre.
The mise en scène relates to the genre of
the magazine. The Kerrang magazine shows
the rock scene through
clothing, leather, which suggests living life
on the edge and rebelling against
oppressive society.
4. Close-up
Close-up shots focus on the subject‟s face.
Many of them gain the viewers attention
because you don‟t normally see a
person‟s face that close up in real life
unless you are really close to them. It
makes you feel close to the artist. The
subject is looking right at the audience.
The Kerrang magazine shows the lead
singer of band „My Chemical Romance‟
with a shocked expression which links to
the article advertised on the cover, which
quotes that “this is really scary”.
5. Group shots
The artists that are subjects in a music
magazine rarely are solo artists. They are
a part of a band. Due to this, band
group shots are used in magazines. In
these shots, as you can see, the group
are arranged into an order with one
person as the focus of the piece and
the others (behind the main focus)
gathered around.
The Q magazine example is a long shot
where as NME opted for a mid shot.
