2. The World Wide Web
(abbreviated as WWW or W3,
commonly known as the Web) is a
system of interlinked hypertext
documents that are accessed via the
Internet.
With a web browser, one can view
web pages that may contain text,
images, videos, and other multimedia
and navigate between them via
hyperlinks.
3. Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist and
former CERN employee, is considered the inventor of the
Web.
On 6 August 1991, Berners-Lee published a short
summary of the World Wide Web project on the
newsgroup alt.hypertext. This date also marked the debut
of the Web as a publicly available service on the Internet,
although new users only access it after August 23.
4. The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often
used in everyday speech without much distinction.
However, the Internet and the World Wide Web
are not the same.
The Internet is a global system of interconnected
computer networks.
In contrast, the web is one of the services that
runs on the Internet.
5. Implications of the web on our social life is huge.
Some ways we use the Web in our daily social
life :-
Send / receive e-mail, documents, pictures,
music, video.
Get news - newspapers, newsgroups.
Buy / sell - almost anything.
Travel arrangements - airlines, hotels.
Socialising on social networks like Facebook.
Banking - pay bills.
Play Games.
6. Online Courses: Various universities now offer
courses online. Students can improve their
knowledge in any subject from the comfort of your
home.
E-tuition: This is a form of tuition in which
students take lessons from teachers based in far
away places. Teachers communicate with students
face to face using web-based services like skype.
Educational resources: Research papers, e-books
and other types of educational resources are
now easily available over the web.
7. The web is like an online library and more. It is
a great source of information. Newspapers,
journals, and books can be accessed online.
Background research on any topic can be done
on the web without actually visiting a library.
However, since most web pages are not
reviewed, it is researcher’s responsibility to check
the authenticity of the information.
Web can also be used for references. One can
refer to encyclopedias or dictionaries.
8. E-mail: It is a method of exchanging digital
messages from an author to one or more
recipients.Most e-mail accounts are free.
Web blogs : These are personal journal articles that
people post. The easiest way to create a blog is to use a blog
service that provides a template for creating a blog and also
host it on the Web.
Social network : Web enabled social network
sites like facebook is becomimg very popular. It helps
people from all over the world to make friendship
with each other.
9. Video conferencing: A process
by which conferences are held
through audio-visual
transmissions over the web.
Web-Chat: It is a system that
allows users to communicate in real time using
easily accessible web interfaces.
Voice over IP: Using certain softwares and
devices, one can even make phone calls over the
web.
10. Music and Video.

on Demand).
13. This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the Web.
The Web has genuinely revolutionised our lives
and we are experiencing dramatic social change on
a scale not seen since the invention of Gutenberg’s
printing press.
But despite all the deserved excitement around this
landmark anniversary, we must remember that the World
Wide Web can be used effectively, only when it addresses
real human needs and behaviour.
