Tim berners Lee - Text
1. Tim Berners Lee
Hello and welcome to my Presentation of Tim Berners Lee, the inventor of the WWW.
First I tell you about the CV of Tim Berners Lee
Then about his invention
And after that about his awards and honers
Life:
His full name is Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee
And he was born in London at the 8. June 1955.
His parents were computer scientists and working on the Ferranti Mark 1, the first
commercially built computer.
He studied from 1973 to 1976 at Queen's College in Oxford, where he graduated with a
first-class bachelor's degree in physics.
During his studies he built a computer from a TV
After graduating, he worked as an engineer for a telecommunications company called
Plessey.
In 1978, he moved to D. G Nash LIMITED, which produced printers. There He worked as
a software developer.
In 1980 he worked briefly for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
The idea at that time was to connect different networks. During his stay in Genf, he
made a prototype of the WWW, which was called INQUIRE.
The difficulty at the time was that each network had its own disk, data, and character
encoding formats.
In the same year he moved to Image Computer Systems, where he headed the
company's technical department for 3 years. There, he worked on a project to
implement a real-time remote procedure call. Through this project, he was able to
expand his knowledge of networks.
In 1984, he returned to CERN, which grew into the largest Internet node in Europe.
2. But how did the idea for the WWW come about?
As a small information:
The Internet was already invented in 1969, when America tried to send messages in a network
of 4 computers, which was called ARPANET. The name Internet originated from the name
Interconnected Networks, when the USA tried to connect networks between Europe and
America.
The problem with CERN was that one location was in France and another was in Switzerland.
The two countries had different network infrastructures. This, of course, made it difficult to
exchange information. On the 12. March 1989, Berners-Lee proposed to his employer CERN a
project based on the principle of hypertext, which was intended to promote the worldwide
exchange and updating of information between scientists.
In 1990, he published a concept for a worldwide hypertext project with Robert Cailliau.
Subsequently, Berners-Lee created the page description language html, the HTTP transfer
protocol, the URL, the first browser WorldWideWeb and the first web server CERN httpd under
the NeXTStep operating system. This should be the origin of the World Wide Web.
In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the
further development of the Web. It was important that he passed his ideas and technical
implementations freely and did not patent them.
At the end, I will tell you about his most important awards:
In 2004, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. for his important work.
In April 2009, the United States' National Academy of Sciences presented him with the
famous Foreign Associate award.
He was added to the list of the "100 most important people of the 20th century" by the
Time Magazine.
At the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics 2012, he was honored as the
inventor of the World Wide Web.
He received the Turing Award 2016 for the invention of the World Wide Web, the first
web browser and the basic protocols to use the web.
These are only the most important awards, but he received many more for his
invention, which fundamentally changed the world.
Today, we can’t imagine a life without the Internet. It is the fastest growing medium of
communication of all time, which has fundamentally changed our way of life.
