The Manhattan Project Essay
The world was shocked when the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945. The
bombs were a result of years of research and testing completed by the nation's top physicists in a
top–secret project called the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a crucial development
by the United States because it quickly ended the war with Japan.
In August 1939, Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard drafted the Einstein–Szilard letter to send to
President Roosevelt. The letter outlined the need for the United States to stockpile uranium ore and
start the development of an atomic bomb. The letter also warned Roosevelt that Nazi scientists were
developing a similar program. President Roosevelt created a project to study uranium and...show

They sent their own physicists to work as spies on the Manhattan Project. The most important
information they obtained was the technique that the Americans used to refine Uranium into a
usable energy source. It is estimated that the Soviet spying program saved the Soviet Union 1 to 2
years of development on their atomic bomb.
After the project was completed and the atomic bomb was ready for use, a group of 155 scientists
who worked on the project signed a petition urging the president to not use the bomb offensively.
This petition was known as the Szilard Petition, named after Leo Szilard, who created the petition.
They were concerned because the original intent of the project was to build an atomic weapon
before the Nazis could, and only use it in defense. The Szilard Petition infuriated Oppenheimer and
Groves, and they tried everything they could to stop it, including attempting to arrest Szilard
himself. In the end, they prevented the petition from being delivered to the president until after the
bombs were ready to be dropped.
The test location, known as Trinity Site, had been chosen a year earlier, and preparations had been
taking place months before the test. People working on the project nicknamed the bomb "The
Gadget" to help maintain its secrecy. On July 12, the bomb's components were brought to Trinity
Site, and assembly was started that day. The detonators were placed inside The Gadget

At the beginning of the 1940's, the American government began to fund the atomic bomb program
named "The Manhattan Project". Scientist in the program began to produce uranium and plutonium
to a workable bomb. On July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb made from plutonium was tested at
Alamogordo, New Mexico. The Germans had already surrender by the time of the first atomic bomb
was tested, but Japan refused to surrender in the South Pacific. In late July of 1945, the allied
demanded total surrender from the Japanese or face destruction. This opportunity was rejected by
the Japanese military government. President Harry Truman was advised that further attempts to
invaded would result in up to 1 million American casualties. On August 6, 1945, the

The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project
September 1, 1939, marked the beginning of World War II. The war was long fought involving
the three axis powers and several allied powers. Among those were Japan and the United States
following Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 (Praino, 2015). Hundreds of thousands
of lives were lost amongst the battles from each side of the war. In 1939, Albert Einstein and Enrico
Fermi fled to America and informed the elected officials that Germany had discovered new
outbreaks in splitting atoms, which was one step closer to the creation of destructive weapons for the
Axis power. With that news, American facilities launched a program that would later be codenamed
"The Manhattan Project" which was the birthplace of the first nuclear atomic reactions. After the
first reaction was created, it was a vicious cycle from there that continued to escalate. With the war
reaching an all–time high in casualties, Truman was faced with a big decision as the programs had
finally experienced breakthroughs to the atomic bomb. He could choose to remain in conventional
war tactics and continue to prolong the war until Japan was ready to surrender, or attempt to save
the lives of many American soldiers and citizens by dropping the atomic bombs onto two major
cities in Japan (Praino, 2015). By choosing the latter, an estimated 225,000 Japanese lives were lost
(Perkins, 2016) and the ethical merits of Truman's decision are still questioned today while some
views remain confident in the choice.

On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B–29 bomber named Enola Gay flew over the industrial city of
Hiroshima, Japan and dropped the first atomic bomb ever. The city went up in flames caused by the
immense power equal to about 20,000 tons of TNT. The project was a success. They were an
unprecedented assemblage of civilian, and military scientific brain power–brilliant, intense, and
young, the people that helped develop the bomb. Unknowingly they came to an isolated mountain
setting, known as Los Alamos, New Mexico, to design and build the bomb that would end World
War 2, but begin serious controversies concerning its sheer power and destruction. I became
interested in this topic because of my interest in science and history. It seemed an...show more

soon placed upon Truman, the next president. Truman knew nothing about the bomb and its effects
yet hastily decided that the bomb be used on Japan, considering Germany was no longer a target
with the war in Europe over. Initiated by Szilard, a petition was made to offer the opinion that the
bomb should be used only if Japan refused to surrender, even after being informed of the bomb's

A bomb big enough to destroy over 90,000 buildings and over half of a city's entire structure,
reportedly kill up to 146,000 people. Imagine hiding that from 141.6 million people. That was their
job for those physicists and others who aided in the creation and hiding of the first atomic bomb.
Secret cities are what was thought to have been the construction and brainstorming sites of the
atomic bomb. Secret cities are like small towns, they have drug stores, grocery stores, housing,
farms, and other requirements of daily life in the 40's. The signature facility locations included,
X–10 Graphite Reactor, Y–12 Beta–3 Racetrack, and K–25 Gaseous Diffusion Process, all of them
located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project
Throughout the Roosevelt administration and later through the Truman administration, it became
clear that both had the distinct focus of ending World War II at the earliest possible time. This is a
common theme identified throughout J. Samuel Walker's Prompt and Utter Destruction. While some
countries had put moderate effort into researching atomic power and how it could affect the war,
the United States was the only country capable of putting full effort into researching and creating an
atomic bomb that could be utilized during the war. Following warnings from scientists that
informed Roosevelt of the possibility of the Germans making progress on their knowledge of
nuclear energy, Roosevelt assigned a lofty and difficult project to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
This project soon became known as "the Manhattan Project" due to the engineer district that was
formed to design and build this bomb being originally headquartered in New York. The Manhattan
Project was established at a time in the war when the United States was uncertain of its outcome.
After the first successful, self–sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place in a squash court at the
University of Chicago, the idea of an atomic bomb became more feasible. However, while the idea
became more feasible, the transition from experimental knowledge to designing an actual bomb was
a huge step that involved many uncertainties and troubles. Although the Manhattan Project was
formed during a period of uncertainty, the government had high hopes of the newly formed project,
but despite these high hopes, the Manhattan Project faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles as it
moved from experimental knowledge to designing the bomb, the most prominent being the design
for the new technology and the role the bomb would play in the realm of global diplomacy.
As the engineers and scientists of the Manhattan Project began further research on the creation of the
atomic bomb, they quickly ran into one of their first major problems. Making nuclear fuel to power
the bomb quickly proved to be a major predicament. The Clinton Engineer
Works, later renamed "Oak Ridge," was established in Tennessee to specifically address the fuel
research needed to operate the atomic

The Manhattan project mainly took places in remote places in New Mexico, Washington, and
Tennessee. There were also research facilities at Chicago and Berkeley colleges. There was a

The Manhattan Project: Aperture Science
In reference to a popular video game called Portal, imagine being recruited for a company called
Aperture Science where you will be creating amazing inventions including creating artificial
intelligence to manage you daily activities. One day while working on an invention, neurotoxin fills
your laboratory. The artificial intelligence has killed you and other scientists. Those that may have
survived were experimented upon, and since this A.I. has no value for human life, this leads to the
death of your peers. This idea of scientists inventing technology that can go beyond human limits and
having uncontrollable outcome has fascinated fiction writers for years. In the example above has an
outcome that was unpredictable. No one could have predicted that the invention, which was

Manhattan represents the uncountable power that human scientist create and the neglect the
outcome of their invention. A real world example of this is the project that shook the world, the
Manhattan Project. This project was responsibly for producing uranium–bearing ores and materials
and processing them into forms suitable for use as source material for the Projects
uranium–enrichment factories and plutonium–producing reactors (Reed). Now, "over one–third of
the energy produced in most nuclear power plants comes from plutonium" (Plutonium). Famously
the Manhattan Project led to the atomic bomb being dropped during World War Two, which ended
the war. Similarly with the Doctor Manhattan the American belive with his powers he could end
war, "now we have a man to end wars" and "I belive that we have a man to end worlds" (Moore

and the essence of power surrounding a country. TheManhattan Project began in a frantic effort to

first atomic bomb) from the Enola Gay on Hiroshima. Little Boy killed seventy thousand people
instantaneously, one hundred and sixty thousand were killed, wounded, or missing, and sixty
thousand later died of burns and radiation disease. Japan refused to surrender even after such a
devastating event. On August 9, 1945, hoping to finally defeat the Japanese, The United States
dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. This bomb, Fat Boy, killed or wounded eighty thousand
people. The shell–shocked Japanese finally had enough and surrendered on August 10, 1945

What was the Manhattan Project and what impact did it have on the world?
Japan was affected the most by the Manhattan Project with the killing of many Japanese. Some
people agree, but some people disagree and state that the United States was affected the most. Who
was affected the most? The Manhattan Project was a secret problem barely anyone knew
about. Many of the scientists that were involved with the Manhattan Project heard about the Axis
powers gaining knowledge of how to make nuclear weapons that could destroy a whole
nation. The Manhattan Project produced two atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan. The
atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Hiroshima was chosen as the target for
the first atomic bomb because it was a large port city with an army base. The bomb dropped on
Nagasaki missed its target by over a mile. The U.S demanded Japan to give up the war or the U.S
would end the war in mass destruction.Japan refused to give up their fight in the war and that gave
Truman the decision to use the bombs. Japan had no idea of any new weapons that had been made
by the U.S during WW2. 1945, the first of two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. On the
9th of August, the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki which killed many Japanese. The
Japanese had officially given up their war with the U.S.
After the loss of Japan, the effects of the bombs had an impact that nobody could have guessed

Leading up to this time the fascist dictators began to gain power in European countries. The big
three being the countries of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, Italy, Benito Mussolini, and Japan,
Emperor Hirohito. In 1935 Italy invades and conquers Ethiopia, shorty after Nazi Germany and
Fascist Italy sign a treaty of cooperation. In 1937,Japan, lead by Hirohito, invaded China. Joseph
Stalin, of Russia, signs the German–Russian non–aggression pact; which allowed Hitler to invade
Poland. But when news of the German invasion of Poland spread Britain along with France joined
the war to oppose the Germans. Germany only continues in it's quest for conquest by invading
Denmark and Norway in the year 1940. Meanwhile the United States is remaining completely
uninvolved under it's Neutrality Act that was passed in 1935. The United States, lead by president
Franklin D. Roosevelt, enacted it's Lend Lease Act in 1941 in order to trade and sell to allied
forces, for payment after war. Japan realizes that the U.S. wasn't exactly being neutral so it sent
suicide bombers to attack our naval base in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Thus leading into
the use of the atomic bomb, but first the construction, an event referred to as the Manhattan Project.
The name Manhattan Project came about because the program began under the Manhattan
Engineering District of the War Department. Early 1939, the scientist of the world learned that

Essay Impact of the Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project had various short and long term affects around the world. Primarily, the
research done to create an atomic bomb led to the discovery of how to harness nuclear power
which affects our lives to this day. However, the Manhattan Project also led to the creation of two
more atomic bombs which would be used in WWII, radiation poisoning resulting in the death of
many , fear of nuclear weapons during the Cold War, the end of the Second World War which was
still taking place in Japan, and the threat of nuclear weapons around the world that still exists.

Some people were immediately vaporized while some lived to suffer the long term effects of
radiation sickness that would be passed down for many generations. At any rate, the Manhattan
project led directly to the bombings of these 2 cities and the devastating death toll. In addition to
the lives saved by nuclear technologies in medicine, the Manhattan Project may have also saved
the lives of many by being an essential factor in ending WWII. After the war had ended with the
Germans, the Japanese remained relentless and continued fighting. The dropping of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki completely ended the war by forcing Japan to surrender. This prevented the war
from going on for even longer and therefore, the Manhattan Project may have saved the lives of
people who would have otherwise been killed in battle. For many, the predominant issue of the
Cold War was the threat of nuclear weapons. Stalin had learned of the Manhattan Project by 1943
and begun the development of a Soviet bomb. Were it not for the Manhattan Project, this threat
would not have existed and the Cold War would not have been. The threat of nuclear weapons and
nuclear war still exists today as 8 countries are known to have nuclear weapons capabilities. Power
seems to lie with countries who have nuclear capabilities because nuclear weapons are one of the
most dangerous and powerful weapons. The threat of nuclear war will always exist as long as there

What was The Manhattan Project? A famous English philosopher named Francis Bacon once
said "Knowledge is power" . Throughout history, the actions of animals and the entire human
race have proved that statement to be true . In the Bible, the popular story of David and Goliath
is an example of the power of knowledge. In the story, David, a sheppard, is outmatched by the
size and brut strength of Goliath. David uses his knowledge of his weapon to defeat the
ginormous enemy . Although a meek sling, coupled with a few stones, the understanding of the
power it could provide, helped David defeat the beast. In 1939 the second world war broke out. A
devastating war that would kill millions of people throughout the world. During World War II, the
United States use their knowledge to make an atomic weapon. Referred to as The Manhattan
Project, this project made enormous contribution in defeating the Axis power. However, the weapon
was deleterious and it would soon threatened the lives of not only the Axis Power but also the lives
of the United States citizens. In 1939, Hitler's Nazi military invaded Poland starting World War II.
The Axis Power fought for land expansion and military conquest. Ultimately 20 different countries
would join forces to fight against the Axis Power. However, many countries were slow in joining the
movement, including the United States of America. In the 1930's, the United States of America
followed isolationism, which is the policy of isolating a

The Atomic Bomb
The research for the first Atomic bomb took place in the United States, by a group of nuclear
engineers; the name of this research was called, "The Manhattan Project". On July 16, 1945, the
detonation of the first atomic bomb was tested near Los Alamos, New Mexico. As the atomic bomb
was detonated, it sent shock–waves across the globe, which demonstrated that nuclear power would
forever change the meaning of war. To create a nuclear bomb, nuclear fission must occur. The
process of nuclear fission was splitting the nucleus of an atom. Splitting an atom was caused by
neutrons firing through one atom and then that atom's neutrons shoot off into other atoms, starting a
chain reaction. In October of 1934, Enrico Fermi, and...show more content...
Oppenheimer had named the first tested nuclear explosion "Trinity". This test was for the
implosion–design plutonium bomb, which had the same design as Fat Man, dropped on Nagasaki.
After the successful testing of Trinity, Oppenheimer quoted from the Bhagavad Gita, "If radiance
of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty
one. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Leo Szilard was a Hungarian Physicist
who dedicated himself to learning how to create a successful chain reaction to make an atomic
bomb before the Germans had a chance to do so. Szilard convinced Albert Einstein to help research
with him on how to create an atomic bomb. The "Einstein–Szilard" letter, sent to President Franklin
D. Roosevelt led to the foundation of research into nuclear fission by the United States government.
This ultimately encouraged the development of the program, the Manhattan Project. Albert Einstein
wrote a letter to the Belgian Ambassador to stop selling uranium to the Germans so they could
slow their progress on the atomic bomb. He also wrote a letter to President Roosevelt announcing
the importance of the United States to create the bomb before other countries. Other than writing
and signing letters, Einstein himself did not play a role in developing the atomic bomb. Enrico
Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1938 for his work

Why Is The Manhattan Project Important
The Manhattan Project was one of the most notorious and catastrophic projects in United State
history. A bomb that took years to perfect and made the U.S. gamble millions of dollars on new
technology that wasn't certain to work. All the secretive facilities scattered all over the U.S.
contributed to the creation of a futuristic weapon of mass destruction beyond anyone's imagination.
The atomic bomb caused thousands to die and left years of remnant radiations. The Manhattan
Project will forever remain as one of the greatest "successful" catastrophic discoveries in human
history.

The Manhattan Project
The Manhattan Project was the code name of the America's attempt to construct an atomic bomb
during World War II. It was named after the Manhattan Engineer District of the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers, because a lot of it's earlier research was done in New York City. An atomic bomb is a
weapon that uses the energy from a nuclear reaction called Fission for its destruction.
The idea that mass could be changed into energy was predicted by Albert Einstein in the earlier part
of the 1900's. John D. Cockcroft and Ernest Walton confirmed this by experiments in 1932. Then in
1938, nuclear fission was discovered by German scientists, and it was feared by many of the U.S.
scientists, that Hitler would try to build a...show more content...
It's first use was made in military action over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945.
The bomb uses a device called an altimeter to measure how far it is from the ground. It sends out
radio frequencies which are bounced back to it. Microchips in the bomb determine how far it still
has to fall, and when to detonate. The bombs also have fuses in the front which arm ! the bomb.
They are not inserted until the bomb is ready to be launched.
Before this bomb was developed, another kind was proposed. Uranium–238 could capture a neutron
and become Uranium–239. All uranium has 92 protons. U–238 has 146 neutrons, and the added
neutron raised the mass to 239. But U–239 is very unstable and it decays to neptunium–239 (93
protons, 146 neutrons), and plutonium–239 (94 protons and 145 neutrons). Plutonium–239 was
fissionable, and could be separated from uranium by chemical techniques ( much easier than
physical process of separating the different isotopes of 235 and 238 of the same element).
The first successful reactor was made at the University of Chicago under the Italian physicist Enrico
Fermi. On December 2, 1942 it made a controlled chain reaction. Five large reactors were built at
Hanford, Washington, where U–238 was blasted with neutrons to make plutonium. It was then sent
to Los Alamos. Since another isotope of plutonium was also fissionable, there was a fear that a chain
reaction could start to soon when the pieces of plutonium where brought

The Manhattan Project was a very important event throughout the World War II history. It began the
development of the atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons that were of good help during the war.
It first began with a German scientist separating the uranium atom, which made people be scared of
what Hitler might be capable of. Also Hitler and his people had begun discovering new types of
weapons that were useful for them in the war. Something that apparently Hitler did not quite think
about, was the persecution of Jewish scientists such as Albert Einstein, who could very well use his
abilities against Hitler. Albert Einstein was a Jewish refugee in the United States. Another very
important scientist, although not Jewish, was Enrico Fermi,...show more content...
On July of 1945, J Robert Oppenheimer tests the first bomb at Trinity State, near Alamogordo,
New Mexico. All the scientists readied themselves to watch the detonation of this atomic bomb
which stood on top of a tower. Once exploded, there was a blinding flash which could be seen
from 200 miles away. It also grew up to 40,000 feet and damaged some of the homes near it that
were 100 miles away. After this explosion President Truman, all the way from Postdam, Germany,
declares that the project was successful. Later on we see how there were more bombings being
made, not only this one at Trinity State. The United States was trying to make Japan surrender but
they denied it. Because of this the United States developed a new bomb named little boy which
was detonated in Hiroshima, Japan. On August 6, 1945 it exploded with an altitude of 1,750 feet.
Over 69% of Hiroshima's buildings were destroyed and about 7% damaged. About 80,000 (or
about 30%) of the people in Hiroshima were killed instantly and another 70,000 were injured. After
this occurring, Japan still didn't want to surrender which caused the United States to develop
another bomb. In August 9, 1945, the next bomb named Fat Man took place at Nagasaki, Japan.
This attack destroyed about 44% of the city, killed about 35,000 people and about 60,000 were
injured. Emperor Hirohito from Japan had enough of these bomb attacks and finally decided to

Many scientists probably wondered if he or she could get the project finished in time and if his or
her work and effort would be a waste of time. Ever since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December
7, 1941, the United States had been at war with Japan causing Germany and Japan's other allies to
declare was on the United States (Sue Hook). Japan's ambush got the United States in a war they
were trying to stay out of in the first place. When the United States entered the war, it was more
of a rush for the Manhattan Project. Germany had become strong since Hitler had taken over, but
as World War II progressed they became even stronger. Germany's attempt to take over the world
meant if they succeeded in doing so, United States would be next. Germany was not strong
enough to take on the world by their selves, but with their allies by their side they might have been
able to. If Germany had not surrendered then they would have been the first to see what the atomic
bomb could do. Japan would be the first to experience what kind of power the atomic bomb has.
The war with Germany was over but the war with Japan still wasn't over. The United States, Great
Britain, and the Soviet Union demanded the Japanese surrender (Dale Anderson). When Japan
refused Truman set up a date to bomb Japan (Dale Anderson). Japan being the first ones to

created to control the development of nuclear weapons, since other nations would inevitably obtain
the technology needed to develop weapons. Possibly, the most influential decision made by the
interim committee was to keep the details of the atomic bomb a secret, to maintain the shock effect,
until after it had been dropped on Japan. Two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first bomb dropped was a uranium bomb, nick–named Little Boy, was
untested before its detonation (US Department of Energy). The second, dropped after the Japanese
did not surrender, was a plutonium bomb, nick–named Fat Man. The dropping of these bombs
propelled the United States to a seat of world power, as they were the only country to obtain a
weapon of mass destruction. The Manhattan Project became scientific and engineering feat,
employing over 100,000 individuals. The exceptional organizational model the Manhattan Project
provided, allowed for great scientific achievements in the later part of

The Manhattan Project Essay

  • 1. The Manhattan Project Essay The world was shocked when the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945. The bombs were a result of years of research and testing completed by the nation's top physicists in a top–secret project called the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a crucial development by the United States because it quickly ended the war with Japan. In August 1939, Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard drafted the Einstein–Szilard letter to send to President Roosevelt. The letter outlined the need for the United States to stockpile uranium ore and start the development of an atomic bomb. The letter also warned Roosevelt that Nazi scientists were developing a similar program. President Roosevelt created a project to study uranium and...show more content... They sent their own physicists to work as spies on the Manhattan Project. The most important information they obtained was the technique that the Americans used to refine Uranium into a usable energy source. It is estimated that the Soviet spying program saved the Soviet Union 1 to 2 years of development on their atomic bomb. After the project was completed and the atomic bomb was ready for use, a group of 155 scientists who worked on the project signed a petition urging the president to not use the bomb offensively. This petition was known as the Szilard Petition, named after Leo Szilard, who created the petition. They were concerned because the original intent of the project was to build an atomic weapon before the Nazis could, and only use it in defense. The Szilard Petition infuriated Oppenheimer and Groves, and they tried everything they could to stop it, including attempting to arrest Szilard himself. In the end, they prevented the petition from being delivered to the president until after the bombs were ready to be dropped. The test location, known as Trinity Site, had been chosen a year earlier, and preparations had been taking place months before the test. People working on the project nicknamed the bomb "The Gadget" to help maintain its secrecy. On July 12, the bomb's components were brought to Trinity Site, and assembly was started that day. The detonators were placed inside The Gadget Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. The Manhattan Project Research Paper At the beginning of the 1940's, the American government began to fund the atomic bomb program named "The Manhattan Project". Scientist in the program began to produce uranium and plutonium to a workable bomb. On July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb made from plutonium was tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico. The Germans had already surrender by the time of the first atomic bomb was tested, but Japan refused to surrender in the South Pacific. In late July of 1945, the allied demanded total surrender from the Japanese or face destruction. This opportunity was rejected by the Japanese military government. President Harry Truman was advised that further attempts to invaded would result in up to 1 million American casualties. On August 6, 1945, the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project September 1, 1939, marked the beginning of World War II. The war was long fought involving the three axis powers and several allied powers. Among those were Japan and the United States following Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 (Praino, 2015). Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost amongst the battles from each side of the war. In 1939, Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi fled to America and informed the elected officials that Germany had discovered new outbreaks in splitting atoms, which was one step closer to the creation of destructive weapons for the Axis power. With that news, American facilities launched a program that would later be codenamed "The Manhattan Project" which was the birthplace of the first nuclear atomic reactions. After the first reaction was created, it was a vicious cycle from there that continued to escalate. With the war reaching an all–time high in casualties, Truman was faced with a big decision as the programs had finally experienced breakthroughs to the atomic bomb. He could choose to remain in conventional war tactics and continue to prolong the war until Japan was ready to surrender, or attempt to save the lives of many American soldiers and citizens by dropping the atomic bombs onto two major cities in Japan (Praino, 2015). By choosing the latter, an estimated 225,000 Japanese lives were lost (Perkins, 2016) and the ethical merits of Truman's decision are still questioned today while some views remain confident in the choice. • 4. The Manhattan Project On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B–29 bomber named Enola Gay flew over the industrial city of Hiroshima, Japan and dropped the first atomic bomb ever. The city went up in flames caused by the immense power equal to about 20,000 tons of TNT. The project was a success. They were an unprecedented assemblage of civilian, and military scientific brain power–brilliant, intense, and young, the people that helped develop the bomb. Unknowingly they came to an isolated mountain setting, known as Los Alamos, New Mexico, to design and build the bomb that would end World War 2, but begin serious controversies concerning its sheer power and destruction. I became interested in this topic because of my interest in science and history. It seemed an...show more content... The responsibilities were soon placed upon Truman, the next president. Truman knew nothing about the bomb and its effects yet hastily decided that the bomb be used on Japan, considering Germany was no longer a target with the war in Europe over. Initiated by Szilard, a petition was made to offer the opinion that the bomb should be used only if Japan refused to surrender, even after being informed of the bomb's destructive capabilities Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Imagine hiding that from 141.6 million people. That was their job for those physicists and others who aided in the creation and hiding of the first atomic bomb. Secret cities are what was thought to have been the construction and brainstorming sites of the atomic bomb. Secret cities are like small towns, they have drug stores, grocery stores, housing, farms, and other requirements of daily life in the 40's. • 6. The Pros And Cons Of The Manhattan Project Throughout the Roosevelt administration and later through the Truman administration, it became clear that both had the distinct focus of ending World War II at the earliest possible time. This is a common theme identified throughout J. Samuel Walker's Prompt and Utter Destruction. While some countries had put moderate effort into researching atomic power and how it could affect the war, the United States was the only country capable of putting full effort into researching and creating an atomic bomb that could be utilized during the war. Following warnings from scientists that informed Roosevelt of the possibility of the Germans making progress on their knowledge of nuclear energy, Roosevelt assigned a lofty and difficult project to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This project soon became known as "the Manhattan Project" due to the engineer district that was formed to design and build this bomb being originally headquartered in New York. The Manhattan Project was established at a time in the war when the United States was uncertain of its outcome. After the first successful, self–sustaining nuclear chain reaction took place in a squash court at the University of Chicago, the idea of an atomic bomb became more feasible. However, while the idea became more feasible, the transition from experimental knowledge to designing an actual bomb was a huge step that involved many uncertainties and troubles. Although the Manhattan Project was formed during a period of uncertainty, the government had high hopes of the newly formed project, but despite these high hopes, the Manhattan Project faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles as it moved from experimental knowledge to designing the bomb, the most prominent being the design for the new technology and the role the bomb would play in the realm of global diplomacy. As the engineers and scientists of the Manhattan Project began further research on the creation of the atomic bomb, they quickly ran into one of their first major problems. Making nuclear fuel to power the bomb quickly proved to be a major predicament. The Clinton Engineer Works, later renamed "Oak Ridge," was established in Tennessee to specifically address the fuel research needed to operate the atomic Get more content on HelpWriting.net

There were also research facilities at Chicago and Berkeley colleges. There was a research pile called up–1 in Chicago were Enrico Fermi was conducting research on the exact amount of neutron radiation needed for a safe and controlled nuclear reaction. Cp–2 was built in Argonne, Illinois to move research away from heavily populated areas. In Oak Ridge, Tennessee x–10 a plutonium pile and separation plant, y–12 an electromagnet plant, and k–25 a gaseous diffusion plant were built. In February 1943 at x–10, there were groundbreaking discoveries for an air–cooled file, a pilot chemical separation plant, and support facilities were made. • 8. The Manhattan Project: Aperture Science In reference to a popular video game called Portal, imagine being recruited for a company called Aperture Science where you will be creating amazing inventions including creating artificial intelligence to manage you daily activities. One day while working on an invention, neurotoxin fills your laboratory. The artificial intelligence has killed you and other scientists. Those that may have survived were experimented upon, and since this A.I. has no value for human life, this leads to the death of your peers. This idea of scientists inventing technology that can go beyond human limits and having uncontrollable outcome has fascinated fiction writers for years. In the example above has an outcome that was unpredictable. No one could have predicted that the invention, which was designed to manage daily task, would develop a god complex. A...show more content... Manhattan represents the uncountable power that human scientist create and the neglect the outcome of their invention. A real world example of this is the project that shook the world, the Manhattan Project. This project was responsibly for producing uranium–bearing ores and materials and processing them into forms suitable for use as source material for the Projects uranium–enrichment factories and plutonium–producing reactors (Reed). Now, "over one–third of the energy produced in most nuclear power plants comes from plutonium" (Plutonium). Famously the Manhattan Project led to the atomic bomb being dropped during World War Two, which ended the war. Similarly with the Doctor Manhattan the American belive with his powers he could end war, "now we have a man to end wars" and "I belive that we have a man to end worlds" (Moore 141–142). • 9. As the last shots of World War II were fired in Europe, the U.S. had a plan for their new advanced weapons of mass destruction. The atomic bombs were dropped on Japan in early August of 1946 (Kennedy). These bombs and their short–lived history have had a huge impact on modern warfare and the essence of power surrounding a country. TheManhattan Project began in a frantic effort to end World War II before the Germans got their hands on the technology. As a result of this project, countries could now interact differently in terms of warfare and how they handle hostile foreign affairs. Little Boy killed seventy thousand people instantaneously, one hundred and sixty thousand were killed, wounded, or missing, and sixty thousand later died of burns and radiation disease. Japan refused to surrender even after such a devastating event. On August 9, 1945, hoping to finally defeat the Japanese, The United States dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki. Japan was affected the most by the Manhattan Project with the killing of many Japanese. Some people agree, but some people disagree and state that the United States was affected the most. Who was affected the most? The Manhattan Project was a secret problem barely anyone knew about. Many of the scientists that were involved with the Manhattan Project heard about the Axis powers gaining knowledge of how to make nuclear weapons that could destroy a whole nation. The Manhattan Project produced two atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan. The atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Hiroshima was chosen as the target for the first atomic bomb because it was a large port city with an army base. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki missed its target by over a mile. The U.S demanded Japan to give up the war or the U.S would end the war in mass destruction.Japan refused to give up their fight in the war and that gave Truman the decision to use the bombs. Japan had no idea of any new weapons that had been made by the U.S during WW2. 1945, the first of two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima. On the 9th of August, the second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki which killed many Japanese. The Japanese had officially given up their war with the U.S. After the loss of Japan, the effects of the bombs had an impact that nobody could have guessed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Manhattan Project Leading up to this time the fascist dictators began to gain power in European countries. The big three being the countries of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, Italy, Benito Mussolini, and Japan, Emperor Hirohito. In 1935 Italy invades and conquers Ethiopia, shorty after Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy sign a treaty of cooperation. In 1937,Japan, lead by Hirohito, invaded China. Joseph Stalin, of Russia, signs the German–Russian non–aggression pact; which allowed Hitler to invade Poland. But when news of the German invasion of Poland spread Britain along with France joined the war to oppose the Germans. Germany only continues in it's quest for conquest by invading Denmark and Norway in the year 1940. Meanwhile the United States is remaining completely uninvolved under it's Neutrality Act that was passed in 1935. The United States, lead by president Franklin D. Roosevelt, enacted it's Lend Lease Act in 1941 in order to trade and sell to allied forces, for payment after war. Japan realizes that the U.S. wasn't exactly being neutral so it sent suicide bombers to attack our naval base in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Thus leading into the use of the atomic bomb, but first the construction, an event referred to as the Manhattan Project. The name Manhattan Project came about because the program began under the Manhattan Engineering District of the War Department. • 12. Essay Impact of the Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project had various short and long term affects around the world. Primarily, the research done to create an atomic bomb led to the discovery of how to harness nuclear power which affects our lives to this day. However, the Manhattan Project also led to the creation of two more atomic bombs which would be used in WWII, radiation poisoning resulting in the death of many , fear of nuclear weapons during the Cold War, the end of the Second World War which was still taking place in Japan, and the threat of nuclear weapons around the world that still exists. Nuclear energy is used today for energy supply and about 15% of the world's energy comes from nuclear power plants some forms of medicine such as nuclear medicine rely...show more content... Some people were immediately vaporized while some lived to suffer the long term effects of radiation sickness that would be passed down for many generations. At any rate, the Manhattan project led directly to the bombings of these 2 cities and the devastating death toll. In addition to the lives saved by nuclear technologies in medicine, the Manhattan Project may have also saved the lives of many by being an essential factor in ending WWII. After the war had ended with the Germans, the Japanese remained relentless and continued fighting. The dropping of Hiroshima and Nagasaki completely ended the war by forcing Japan to surrender. This prevented the war from going on for even longer and therefore, the Manhattan Project may have saved the lives of people who would have otherwise been killed in battle. For many, the predominant issue of the Cold War was the threat of nuclear weapons. Stalin had learned of the Manhattan Project by 1943 and begun the development of a Soviet bomb. Were it not for the Manhattan Project, this threat would not have existed and the Cold War would not have been. The threat of nuclear weapons and nuclear war still exists today as 8 countries are known to have nuclear weapons capabilities. Power seems to lie with countries who have nuclear capabilities because nuclear weapons are one of the most dangerous and powerful weapons. The threat of nuclear war will always exist as long as there are nuclear Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. What was The Manhattan Project? A famous English philosopher named Francis Bacon once said "Knowledge is power" . Throughout history, the actions of animals and the entire human race have proved that statement to be true . In the Bible, the popular story of David and Goliath is an example of the power of knowledge. In the story, David, a sheppard, is outmatched by the size and brut strength of Goliath. David uses his knowledge of his weapon to defeat the ginormous enemy . Although a meek sling, coupled with a few stones, the understanding of the power it could provide, helped David defeat the beast. In 1939 the second world war broke out. A devastating war that would kill millions of people throughout the world. During World War II, the United States use their knowledge to make an atomic weapon. Referred to as The Manhattan Project, this project made enormous contribution in defeating the Axis power. However, the weapon was deleterious and it would soon threatened the lives of not only the Axis Power but also the lives of the United States citizens. In 1939, Hitler's Nazi military invaded Poland starting World War II. The Axis Power fought for land expansion and military conquest. Ultimately 20 different countries would join forces to fight against the Axis Power. However, many countries were slow in joining the movement, including the United States of America. • 14. The Manhattan Project Essay The Atomic Bomb The research for the first Atomic bomb took place in the United States, by a group of nuclear engineers; the name of this research was called, "The Manhattan Project". On July 16, 1945, the detonation of the first atomic bomb was tested near Los Alamos, New Mexico. As the atomic bomb was detonated, it sent shock–waves across the globe, which demonstrated that nuclear power would forever change the meaning of war. To create a nuclear bomb, nuclear fission must occur. The process of nuclear fission was splitting the nucleus of an atom. Splitting an atom was caused by neutrons firing through one atom and then that atom's neutrons shoot off into other atoms, starting a chain reaction. After the successful testing of Trinity, Oppenheimer quoted from the Bhagavad Gita, "If radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one. Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Leo Szilard was a Hungarian Physicist who dedicated himself to learning how to create a successful chain reaction to make an atomic bomb before the Germans had a chance to do so. Szilard convinced Albert Einstein to help research with him on how to create an atomic bomb. The "Einstein–Szilard" letter, sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt led to the foundation of research into nuclear fission by the United States government. This ultimately encouraged the development of the program, the Manhattan Project. Albert Einstein wrote a letter to the Belgian Ambassador to stop selling uranium to the Germans so they could slow their progress on the atomic bomb. He also wrote a letter to President Roosevelt announcing the importance of the United States to create the bomb before other countries. Other than writing and signing letters, Einstein himself did not play a role in developing the atomic bomb. • 15. Why Is The Manhattan Project Important The Manhattan Project was one of the most notorious and catastrophic projects in United State history. A bomb that took years to perfect and made the U.S. gamble millions of dollars on new technology that wasn't certain to work. All the secretive facilities scattered all over the U.S. contributed to the creation of a futuristic weapon of mass destruction beyond anyone's imagination. The atomic bomb caused thousands to die and left years of remnant radiations. The Manhattan Project will forever remain as one of the greatest "successful" catastrophic discoveries in human history. • 16. The Manhattan Project Essay The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project was the code name of the America's attempt to construct an atomic bomb during World War II. It was named after the Manhattan Engineer District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, because a lot of it's earlier research was done in New York City. An atomic bomb is a weapon that uses the energy from a nuclear reaction called Fission for its destruction. The idea that mass could be changed into energy was predicted by Albert Einstein in the earlier part of the 1900's. John D. Cockcroft and Ernest Walton confirmed this by experiments in 1932. Then in 1938, nuclear fission was discovered by German scientists, and it was feared by many of the U.S. scientists, that Hitler would try to build a...show more content... It's first use was made in military action over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The bomb uses a device called an altimeter to measure how far it is from the ground. It sends out radio frequencies which are bounced back to it. Microchips in the bomb determine how far it still has to fall, and when to detonate. The bombs also have fuses in the front which arm ! the bomb. They are not inserted until the bomb is ready to be launched. Before this bomb was developed, another kind was proposed. Uranium–238 could capture a neutron and become Uranium–239. All uranium has 92 protons. U–238 has 146 neutrons, and the added neutron raised the mass to 239. But U–239 is very unstable and it decays to neptunium–239 (93 protons, 146 neutrons), and plutonium–239 (94 protons and 145 neutrons). Plutonium–239 was fissionable, and could be separated from uranium by chemical techniques ( much easier than physical process of separating the different isotopes of 235 and 238 of the same element). The first successful reactor was made at the University of Chicago under the Italian physicist Enrico Fermi. On December 2, 1942 it made a controlled chain reaction. Five large reactors were built at Hanford, Washington, where U–238 was blasted with neutrons to make plutonium. It was then sent to Los Alamos. Since another isotope of plutonium was also fissionable, there was a fear that a chain reaction could start to soon when the pieces of plutonium where brought Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. The Manhattan Project Essay The Manhattan Project was a very important event throughout the World War II history. It began the development of the atomic bomb and other nuclear weapons that were of good help during the war. It first began with a German scientist separating the uranium atom, which made people be scared of what Hitler might be capable of. Also Hitler and his people had begun discovering new types of weapons that were useful for them in the war. Something that apparently Hitler did not quite think about, was the persecution of Jewish scientists such as Albert Einstein, who could very well use his abilities against Hitler. Albert Einstein was a Jewish refugee in the United States. Another very important scientist, although not Jewish, was Enrico Fermi,...show more content... On July of 1945, J Robert Oppenheimer tests the first bomb at Trinity State, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. All the scientists readied themselves to watch the detonation of this atomic bomb which stood on top of a tower. Once exploded, there was a blinding flash which could be seen from 200 miles away. It also grew up to 40,000 feet and damaged some of the homes near it that were 100 miles away. After this explosion President Truman, all the way from Postdam, Germany, declares that the project was successful. Later on we see how there were more bombings being made, not only this one at Trinity State. The United States was trying to make Japan surrender but they denied it. Because of this the United States developed a new bomb named little boy which was detonated in Hiroshima, Japan. On August 6, 1945 it exploded with an altitude of 1,750 feet. Over 69% of Hiroshima's buildings were destroyed and about 7% damaged. About 80,000 (or about 30%) of the people in Hiroshima were killed instantly and another 70,000 were injured. After this occurring, Japan still didn't want to surrender which caused the United States to develop another bomb. In August 9, 1945, the next bomb named Fat Man took place at Nagasaki, Japan. This attack destroyed about 44% of the city, killed about 35,000 people and about 60,000 were injured. Emperor Hirohito from Japan had enough of these bomb attacks and finally decided to surrender. • 18. The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project The Manhattan Project was to see if making an atomic bomb possible. The success of this project would forever change the world forever making it known that something this powerful can be manmade. The Manhattan Project's success was something that had an impact on everybody involved since they helped create something with so much destructive power it could destroy a city within seconds. The University of Chicago in Illinois had a huge role with the making of the atomic bomb (The Manhattan Project, Sue Hook). The University has been placed underneath a football field where nobody would have ever thought of it being (The Manhattan Project, Sue Hook). The university tested to see if atomic power actually could be...show more content... Many scientists probably wondered if he or she could get the project finished in time and if his or her work and effort would be a waste of time. Ever since Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States had been at war with Japan causing Germany and Japan's other allies to declare was on the United States (Sue Hook). Japan's ambush got the United States in a war they were trying to stay out of in the first place. When the United States entered the war, it was more of a rush for the Manhattan Project. Germany had become strong since Hitler had taken over, but as World War II progressed they became even stronger. Germany's attempt to take over the world meant if they succeeded in doing so, United States would be next. Germany was not strong enough to take on the world by their selves, but with their allies by their side they might have been able to. If Germany had not surrendered then they would have been the first to see what the atomic bomb could do. Japan would be the first to experience what kind of power the atomic bomb has. The war with Germany was over but the war with Japan still wasn't over. The United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union demanded the Japanese surrender (Dale Anderson). When Japan refused Truman set up a date to bomb Japan (Dale Anderson). Japan being the first ones to experience what the atomic bomb Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Essay On Manhattan Project Manhattan Project The purpose of the manhattan project was to develop an atomic bomb for the United States defenses. President Roosevelt ordered it to be created. And it was to be kept secret so it wasn't stolen by germans and other spies to speed up their nuclear process. The bomb was to only be used in war. It was dropped on nagasaki, and each bomb had a code name like thinman or little boy or fatman ect. There were many atomic spies at the time and germany attempted to steal technology from the manhattan project there were also many espionage surrounding the project to attempt to steal. • 20. The Manhattan Project Essay example During World War II, the Americans fought a two –front war, with pressure from both Japan and Germany. The United States, aware that Germany was threatening to build an atomic weapon, created a secret project to develop the technology first. Under the codename, the Manhattan Project, leading scientists carried out top secret research on fission and the technology needed to create the first atomic bomb. The immediate impact of the Manhattan Project was the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, ending the war in the Pacific. However, more important influences of this project can be seen following the detonation of the first bombs. The emergence of the United States as a world superpower following World War II, the tensions derived from the...show more content... This committee decided that the United States should retain nuclear superiority, in the event that international relations deteriorated following World War II (US Department of Energy). This decision is a foreshadowing of the Cold War, and nuclear arms race which followed the dropping of nuclear weapons on Japan. The interim committee also decreed that a regulatory system should be created to control the development of nuclear weapons, since other nations would inevitably obtain the technology needed to develop weapons. Possibly, the most influential decision made by the interim committee was to keep the details of the atomic bomb a secret, to maintain the shock effect, until after it had been dropped on Japan. Two atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The first bomb dropped was a uranium bomb, nick–named Little Boy, was untested before its detonation (US Department of Energy). The second, dropped after the Japanese did not surrender, was a plutonium bomb, nick–named Fat Man. The dropping of these bombs propelled the United States to a seat of world power, as they were the only country to obtain a weapon of mass destruction. The Manhattan Project became scientific and engineering feat, employing over 100,000 individuals. The exceptional organizational model the Manhattan Project provided, allowed for great scientific achievements in the later part of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
