A Glance on the Distinctive Matrimonial Rituals of the Ezhavas
Ezhavas are the offspring of the ancient originators of the Chera
(Dravidian) dynasty, the Villavar. In different parts of south India,
they are differently known, such as Billavas in Tulu Nadu and Thiyya
in Malabar. At the earlier times, they were called as ‘llavar’ too.
About matrimonial rituals –
All the Hindu marriages in India have their own styles. Different
communities have their own traditional rituals. Basically the rituals

• Then Muhurtham is decided by their family astrologer. It is nothing
but the time and date of the Hindu Ezhava matrimony.
• After deciding the wedding date, a venue gets finalized for
organizing the rituals. Along with all the guests, relatives and family
members both the bride and groom reach there. The panditji utters
the mantras and performs the wedding rituals.
• Brides are carried to the Mnadapam by her family and relatives. She
sits inside a basket. Her father performs the Kanyadan ritual which
signifies he hands over the responsibilities of his daughter’s
happiness and sorrow to the hands of her life partner, forever! Then
the marriage couple circles around the yagya fire taking oaths of
marriage.
• Finally, the groom ties the Mangalsutra around the neck of his life
partner. This represents his determination and promise to protect his
wife for the lifetime from every odds and obstacles in life.
Every wedding happens with the similar goal which is to unite two
souls together for a lifetime so that they may live happily ever after.
