2. Diplomacy:
Diplomacy is the art and practice of conducting
negotiations between representatives of states. It
usually refers to the conduct of International
relations through the intercession of professional
diplomats with regard to a full range of topical
issues. Diplomacy entails influencing the decisions
and conduct of foreign govt. and officials through
dialogue, negotiations and other non violent
activities. By the 20th century the diplomatic
practices pioneered in Europe and later it had
been adopted by the rest of the world.
3. Power:
Power is the ability to influence the outcome of
events, in the sense of ‘power to’ do something.
In Global politics this include the ability of a
country to conduct its own affairs without the
interference of other countries ,bringing power
very close to autonomy. However, Power is
usually thought of as a relationship, that is the
ability to influence the behaviour of others in a
manner not of choosing or power over others.
4. What is Hard Power?
Hard Power: The ability of one actor or state to influence
another through the use of threats or rewards is called hard
power. It is also known as Carrot (conomic inducements
)and Stick (threat) approach. There are 2 forms of :
1.military power
2. economic power
What is Soft Power?
Soft Power: This term was first used by US academic and
foreign policy analyst Joseph S. Nye in 1990. The ability to
influence other actors by persuading them to follow or agree
to norms and aspirations that produce the desired
behaviour. It can also be called Smart Diplomacy or
Cultural Diplomacy.
5. Soft power lies in a nations attractiveness and
comes from 3 following resources
1. Culture- In places it can attract others.
Ex-Visit of Indian Prime minister in Dopalam,
China
2.Political Values- when it lives up to them at
foreign and abroad.
Ex- Democracy, Human Rights situation of a
country North Korea, Afghanistan
3. Foreign Policies- when they are seen as
legitimate and having moral authorities.
Ex- aggressive foreign policy of Russia, U.S.A
6. 1. Soft power is one of the key components of
foreign policy in the age of mass, global trade
and tourism.
2. Soft power is less costlier than hard power.

8. Ping pong diplomacy: Refers to the exchange
of table tennis (ping-pong) players between the
United States and China in early 1970’s that
began during the 1971 world table tennis
championship in Nagoya,Japan as a result of
an encounter between players USA and PRC.
The event marked a thaw in Sino American
relations that paved the way to visit Beijing by
USA president Richard Nixon.
9. Panda Diplomacy: Panda bear is the symbol of
peace and friendship for Chinese people.
Beginning 1957 the people’s republic of China
(PRC) has presented countries Panda bear with
a view to cement the relationship. This trend
began 60 years ago when PRC presented soviet
union with Ping Ping. PRC presented panda
bears to North Korea and USA as a token of
friendship and goodwill. In 1982,the govt
pulled the plug of this policy as animal became
endangered.
