Naples is the capital of the Campania region in southern Italy and the third largest municipality in Italy. Greek settlements were established in the area around the 8th century BC, developing into the colony of Parthenope. In 470 BC, the city of Neapolis was founded and played a key role in Roman society. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its catastrophic eruption in AD 79 that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum. The National Museum houses Europe's oldest and most important archaeological collection. Important landmarks include the historical center, San Carlo theatre which is the oldest opera house in Europe, and the Royal Palace of Capodimonte.
