2. Leadership process in Islam
To make clear promise, justice, integrity and trust between leaders and followers in leadership
is in Islam. Muhammad (Saw) was a great leader for the entire world. Muhammad (Saw) said
“Each of you is guardian, and you be asked about his subject”.
Leaders can’t do any thing without willingness of followers. There are two types of leaders. 1)
Servant leader 2) guardian leader. Servant leaders are those types of leaders whose concept is,
leader is a servant of his nation. Guardian leader are those types of leader whose concept is,
leaders save their nation from unfavorable environment, prevent people from unfair and cruel
way and promote justice and Taqwa. There are five bases of power in Islam. Legitimate power:
power comes to leaders due to his position is legitimate power. But according to Islam leaders
must use positive effect of his power. Reward power: when leader have power to give rewards
to others is called reward power. Coercive power: leaders have power because he has ability to
punish or to control people but against evil deeds. Expert power: leaders have those abilities
and skills which his followers needs to complete specific target. Referent power: leaders have
the ability to influence others and lead others. There are four moral bases of Islam. Iman: faith
or Iman must be core value in the leader. He must do each everything according to the consent
and willingness of GOD rather than his own interest. Leaders must have specific expertise and
skills. Sometimes organizations finds leader who are good Muslim but weak leadership skills
and sometimes who have good leadership skills and weak Muslim. Islam: iman and Islam are
related to each other. If Islam is fruit then iman is its seed. Islam is acquiring peace within
oneself and with GOD. Taqwa: the most common thing which leads people to paradise is taqwa.
Doing all the things according to the ill of GOD is taqwa. Ihsan: Ihsan is doing things beyond
your duties. If you are doing things rightly according to the will of GOD it is taqwa but if you do
things beyond your duties it is ihsan. There are five behaviors in Islam. Justice: justice is more
important in Islam whether it is for leaders or the duty of followers. Muhammad (saw) stress
upon the behavior of justice which can never be ignored. Trust: if you are good Muslim then
you must not break the trust of others. Relationship between two persons is based on trust.
Righteousness: to behave in a way that is ethically correct is righteousness. Righteousness
3. people have Iman on GOD. They have care for people who are needy, offer prayers regularly
and act in a right way. Self improvement: Islam stress upon the self improvement for both
leaders and followers. In this way they can evaluate and monitors themselves and they will
come to know what kind of improvement they needed. They struggle for their own
improvement. Promise keeping: it is basic concept of Muslims, followers and leaders. There are
some leader’s characteristics. Honesty: honesty is a great deed related to our Muhammad
(saw). Our Muhammad (saw) was considered as sadiq and Amin. If you are good leader you
must be honest. Complete: leaders must be competent so that his followers can follow him
without any doubt. Leaders must consult with their companions in any situation so that best
decisions can be made. Inspiration: in any situation leaders must not lose his hope. Giving hope
in critical position is important characteristics of leaders. Patience is also an important factor.
Humility: leaders should not be egoistic person. He must be humble. Hazrat Ali (ra) focused on
the ignorance of pride and arrogance. Willingness of seek consultation: Muhammad (saw)
stress on acquiring knowledge, must do consult with others. Power should not use in negative
way. Followers must be obedient and dynamic followership.
