2. Experience
I am an experienced Chartered, Registered and Practitioner Psychologist specialising in working with
children, young people and adults.
I am currently working full time in private practice and am the Director of Psychological Assessment and
Therapies Ltd. In addition to providing a generic Educational and Child Psychology service to a range of
service users including families, schools, health professionals and solicitors, my role also includes
assessment of adults and students with learning disabilities. I have also acted as a consultant to services
specialising in dyslexia and dyspraxia.
As a Local Authority Educational Psychologist, I gained experience in the assessment and monitoring of
children and young people with the full range of special educational needs: developmental delay,
dyslexia, developmental coordination disorder, autistic spectrum disorders; behavioural, emotional and
social difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. During this time, I specialised in working
with families and teachers of children with severe and challenging behaviour. I also contributed to the
statutory assessment of children and young people.
Whilst working for the Local Authority, I had a specific responsibility towards monitoring the needs of
Looked After Children. In this role, I worked closely with the Adoption and Fostering service where I
was involved in training foster carers and prospective adoptive parents in child development needs,
paying attention to attachment and emotional adjustment. My primary role was to work closely with
foster families to maintain children's placements wherever possible by helping them understand the needs
of the vulnerable young people in their care and how to manage these effectively. I have gained
considerable experience in working directly with, through assessment and intervention, many children
and young people who have been subject to abuse.
As a Child Psychologist working within a Clinical Child Psychology service in the NHS, I was involved
in contributing to the assessment of the emotional, behavioural and well being needs of children and
families as part of a multi disciplinary team including psychiatrists, paediatricians, social workers and
other health professionals. In addition to a child and family assessment role, I was also able to provide a
variety of interventions which included parenting skills, social skills training, anger management,
individual therapy and family therapy.
My legal experience to date has included providing expert assessments of adults and children which have
been used in a variety of proceedings including Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunals as
well as criminal, civil, and family proceedings. I have experience of giving expert evidence in court and
in tribunals. I am listed as an expert witness with the British Psychological Society and am experienced in
writing concise reports for legal purposes.
Prior to qualifying as an Educational Psychologist I gained 15 years of experience as a teacher in
mainstream and special schools, 12 years of which were in promoted posts of responsibility, including a
SENCo role. In particular, I taught children and young people with a range of special educational needs
and latterly with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. In addition, I have gained experience,
through exchange programmes, in schools and services in Canada, Denmark and Australia which
included working with indigenous populations in the latter. As a teacher, I was the recipient of the John
Chubb award in for designing and leading a peer tutoring and inclusion programme whilst in Australia.
