Philosophy of Care:
Jason Watson, Day Patient Coordinator: Child and Family Unit. TPMH.
Why do I practice the way I practice, what is my philosophy of care, this is a good question? I
believe that people and adolescents especially are made up of many different parts, the physical,
emotional, mental, cultural, spiritual and many other parts of course. I aim to care holistically. By
using my skill, knowledge, empathy and personality, I aim to create a therapeutic environment
that would allow students in my care secure a platform from which they can grow on to meet
their needs. I can help the student meet some of these needs, I can suggest these students utilise
the assistance of me and my peers in order to meet some of these needs, and sometimes the
student needs to find the resources to meet these needs.
So my philosophy is collaborative, I will happily ask for help of multi-disciplinary peers. My
philosophy is empowerment, the student needs to develop every skill they can to meet their own
needs and not remain dependant on others. My philosophy is holism, caring for more than the
physical. My philosophy is self responsibility, in order to practice professionally, I need to
maintain my skill level, continue to learn about my area of expertise (mental health) and continue
to be happy to be practicing where I am presently placed. I am committed to ongoing training
and professional development and am nearing the completion of my Masters in Guidance
Studies.
