The APM’s Royal Charter
 APM became a Chartered
body on 1 April 2017. Royal
Charters date back to the
13th century and are granted
by the Queen on advice of
the Privy Council. Following
a tradition that dates back
over 700 years, the Royal
Charter is printed on vellum
with the Royal seal in wax.

Chartered:
What is a Recognised Assessment?
It has been approved by APM and meets the
requirements for the RPP or ChPP Standard:
 at the required level for technical knowledge or
technical knowledge and professional practice;
 externally regulated by an approved body such
as Ofqual or aligns to the quality requirements
of ISO17024; and
 covers a minimum number of mandatory and
elective competences
Currently the only Recognised Assessments are
PPQ and PQ for technical knowledge only and
RPP for both professional practice and technical
knowledge. This will change over time.
What is the Process?
• Written Submission (MS Word doc)
• Minimum 2 (max 5) Project Overviews
• Answer 5 sets of Practice questions
• Answer 5 sets of knowledge questions
• One Hour Interview validating above

• Up to 4 Project Overviews
• 10 Mandatory, 2 Elective Competences
• 30m -2hr Interview validating technical
knowledge* and professional practice

Registered before Chartered?
 If you already hold the RPP standard you may be
eligible for Route 2 to Chartered status.
 As an RPP you are deemed to have already
demonstrated your technical knowledge and
professional practice, so to get from RPP to
Chartered you need only provide evidence of
ongoing CPD and a commitment to ethical and
professional behaviour, both validated via written
application and a 30 minute telephone interview.
 The cost of upgrading from RPP to ChPP is £245

Evidence time expired?
 If your most recent experience of delivering
projects is more than five years old, you might
find it hard to complete the RPP Application
because your portfolio of evidence may be
outdated (time expired), but you can still apply
directly for Chartered.
 You will need to provide additional evidence in
your submission and at interview to explain how
you have kept your knowledge and professional
practice current during the intervening period.

  • 10. The APM’s Royal Charter  APM became a Chartered body on 1 April 2017. Royal Charters date back to the 13th century and are granted by the Queen on advice of the Privy Council. Following a tradition that dates back over 700 years, the Royal Charter is printed on vellum with the Royal seal in wax.

  • 16. What is a Recognised Assessment? It has been approved by APM and meets the requirements for the RPP or ChPP Standard:  at the required level for technical knowledge or technical knowledge and professional practice;  externally regulated by an approved body such as Ofqual or aligns to the quality requirements of ISO17024; and  covers a minimum number of mandatory and elective competences Currently the only Recognised Assessments are PPQ and PQ for technical knowledge only and RPP for both professional practice and technical knowledge. This will change over time.

Registered before Chartered?  If you already hold the RPP standard you may be eligible for Route 2 to Chartered status.  As an RPP you are deemed to have already demonstrated your technical knowledge and professional practice, so to get from RPP to Chartered you need only provide evidence of ongoing CPD and a commitment to ethical and professional behaviour, both validated via written application and a 30 minute telephone interview.  The cost of upgrading from RPP to ChPP is £245

Evidence time expired?  If your most recent experience of delivering projects is more than five years old, you might find it hard to complete the RPP Application because your portfolio of evidence may be outdated (time expired), but you can still apply directly for Chartered.  You will need to provide additional evidence in your submission and at interview to explain how you have kept your knowledge and professional practice current during the intervening period.

  4. The new APM Competence Framework 2nd edition describes APM's new view of the competences necessary for effective project, programme, portfolio management and PMO. It has been developed to help project professionals understand and assess their current competence against a common baseline. It looks for evidence in 2 areas: Application (demonstrating actions and behaviours) and Knowledge (demonstrating understanding).
  5. Fundamental (PFQ) and Project Management (PMQ) Quals are both knowledge based exams whereas Professional (PPQ) moves into the competence assessment space. RPP is one of the routes to achieving chartered status (route 2) as it exempts candidates from the technical and competence application written submission – calling only for a short interview to become Chartered. Refer to ChPP slide pack for all information and guidance around the ChPP standard and assessment routes 1, 2 and 3.
