The document discusses different uses of sound in a video clip. It analyzes the voiceover representing the thoughts of the main character David and how his brother Ben has few thoughts portrayed. When music plays during a scene in the kitchen, it starts as non-diegetic and becomes diegetic. David's dark thoughts are represented by calm music suddenly exploding during a voiceover while Ben sleeps. Ominous bass playing under another scene creates a sense of something potentially going wrong when living with a disabled family member.
2. Voice Over
The voice over on the video is of the boy who they whole clip revolves
around. The camera is normally positioned on him but the voice is saying
what David is thinking. This links to the representation of disability as David
is able to make constructive thoughts and think deeply into ideas. However,
his brother (Ben) seems to be blank and we don’t hear him speak a lot or
hear any of his thoughts. This shows that the stereotypical disabled person is
blank minded and nothing ever goes through there head to think or to say.
3. Sound Track
At this part of the clip the song, the beach boys – wouldn’t it be nice, starts
playing over the top as a non-diegetic sound. The lyrics at this point in the
song are “wouldn’t it be nice if we were older?”. This could signify that David
wants Ben to grow up and then David could live his own life as he feels
trapped and pressured to look after his brother because he is disabled. The
camera then goes to the kitchen where they are all eating and the song
become diegetic because it is a song being played on the radio which you
would expect to hear.
4. Non – Diegetic Sound
When Ben’s sleeping, you hear David’s thoughts in a voice over. The music is
very steady and calm and then all of a sudden there’s an explosion which could
represent that David’s mind has exploded in to thoughts of how to kill his
brother. David is represented as being quite intelligent as he can go deep into
thought but Ben is seen as blank with no intelligence and no thought.
5. The sound at this part is quite an ominous with the bass playing over the top,
creating an underlying sense of fear whilst the bass is carrying on as normal.
This could be linked with a disabled family member as an underlying sense of
something going wrong is always present whilst they try to go about life as
normally as possible.
