3. Impact of Venture
Jamie Oliver started campaigning for the ban of unhealthy foods in schools in
2005 with his documentary, “Jamie’s School Dinners”. In the documentary, he
took over responsibility for running the kitchen meals in Kidbrooke School,
for a year. Disgusted by the unhealthy food being served to school children
and the lack of healthy alternatives on offer, Oliver began a campaign to
improve the standard of Britain’s school meals. This led to the British
Government pledging £280m on school dinners over 3 years, with the then
British PM, Tony Blair, acknowledging it was a result of his campaign.
He also runs a charity restaurant called “Fifteen” in which he trained fifteen
disadvantaged young people to work in the hospitality industry. The success
allowed him to open more such restaurants around the world. These
restaurants are part of the Fifteen foundation. The foundation's mission is to
inspire disadvantaged youth, including those with drug or alcohol problems,
the unemployed and the homeless, to believe in themselves and the possibility
of becoming chefs.
