4. MOTHER TERESA
Mother Teresa was born on 27 August 1910 of
Albanian parents in Skopje. Her real name was Agnes
Gonxha Bojaxhiu. She joined a convent in Ireland in
1928. When she was only 18 years old she was sent
to Darjeeling. Here she began teaching in Kolkata
Girls’ School. Later she left teaching to work among
the poor in slums. From 1948 she started working for
the downtrodden and sick destitute. She worked
selflessly for them. For her sincere, dedicated and
selfless work, she was awarded Nobel Prize for peace
in 1979. She left for her heavenly abode on 5
September 1997.

6. Character sketch of Mikali
Mikali, a teenage boy, is the main character of the
story “Maternity”. He is a big lad of fourteen, healthy
and robust but is unable to work for his bread, as he
has to find a nursing mother for his starving infant
brother. He stands for courage and determination.
The women in the refugee camps despise the baby
because its wails disturb their sleep. They chase
Mikali away. His miserable and horrible experiences
make Mikali desperate. Finally a Chinaman takes
pity on him and takes him to his house where his
wife breast feeds the baby lovingly. Thus the baby is
saved. In the story Mikali is the embodiment of
fraternal love and dedication.
