To Whom It May Concern,
I serve as the Undergraduate Director of the Systems Engineering and Engineering Management
Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Aseel Ayoub graduated in December 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering (BSSE)
degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte). Because this degree is offered
in the College of Engineering and not in the College of Computing and Informatics, it does not focus on
programming and computer systems analysis and design. The BSSE degree at UNC Charlotte focuses
on using engineering principles to make industrial and service systems processes work better. Most of
the examples used in classes are focused on manufacturing and other industrial applications, but many of
our graduates are also working at service systems companies (e.g. financial services, distribution, and
healthcare). The closest engineering major to systems engineering is industrial engineering. In the
United States, many of the traditional industrial engineering departments have renamed themselves to
include the word “systems” (e.g. Industrial and Systems Engineering or Industrial and Manufacturing
Systems Engineering).
Our graduates are educated to focus on process improvement. They learn skills related to analyzing and
modifying systems of people, machines, processes, information, tools, etc. to drive out waste and
increase the capability of the value added steps within the processes. Statistics, quality control,
experimental design, simulation, value engineering, decision analysis, project management, operations
research, production control, etc. are the tools that they learn and that are used to make processes work
better. These skills can be used in government, industry, and a wide variety of situations.
I hope this letter helps you understand more about the degree and how to best utilize Aseel Ayoub’s
skills.
If there is any additional information you require, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Mike Ogle, Ph.D.
