2. Early Life
• John Wood was born in January 1964
• He holds a bachelor's degree from the University Of Colorado,
and a master's degree in business administration from
the Kellogg Graduate School of at Northwestern University.
• John Wood worked as an executive for Microsoft. His positions
included Director of Marketing for Australia, Director of
Marketing for the Asia-Pacific region and Director of Business
Development for Greater China.
3. Leaving Microsoft to change
others life.
• Wood took a vacation from his work at Microsoft in 1998 to
trek through the Himalayas. He visited a primary school that
contained 450 children and only a handful of books—none
age-appropriate.
• A year later, Wood returned to the school with 3,000 books--
all donated in response to his email appeal to friends and
family. Soon thereafter, he left his job at Microsoft entirely to
devote himself full-time to Books for Nepal, a side project that
would eventually form the foundation for Room to Read.
4. Room To Read.
• Room to Read develops literacy skills and a habit of reading
among primary school children, and supports girls to complete
secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in
school and beyond
• Room to Read is currently serving communities in nine
countries throughout Asia and Africa, with plans to expand
into a tenth country, Tanzania, in 2011

5. Making an impact.
• What started with a simple email requesting friends donate
used books has grown into Room to Read, an award-winning
non-profit that over the past eleven years has established over
12,500 libraries, donated and published 10 million books, built
over 1,500 schools, and supported more than 13,500 girls so
they can graduate from secondary school with the skills they
need to succeed. In total, Room to Read has impacted the
lives 6 million children.
