NECs were successfully grown on chitosan-based membranes coated with collagen. By day 7, ciliated cells were observed on the membranes and ciliary beating increased over time. By day 21, the NECs formed a pseudostratified polarized layer on the membranes resembling the structure of native nasal epithelium, demonstrating the potential of these chitosan-based membranes as scaffolds for nasal epithelial cell growth and differentiation.
