• Accommodation is one of the basic needs for any tourism activity.
• Travellers and tourists need lodging for rest, while they are on a
tour.
• Accommodation in the form of low budget lodges/hotels to world
class luxury hotels is available at all the major tourist destinations
to provide the tourist a home away from home.
• These are establishments that provide a place for the tourist to stay
i.e. lodging facilities which are paid for the duration of the stay by
the tourist.
• There are various types of accommodation which are being used
by tourists regularly groups for pilgrimage. The world's
ACCOMMODATIONS
• Tourist accommodation performs an important function within both
the context of rural and urban tourism.
• It provides the opportunity for visitors to stay for a length of time to
enjoy the locality and its attractions, while their spending contributes
to the local economy.
• Accommodation forms a base for the tourist’s exploration of the urban
and non-urban environments.
• Generally, accommodation do not attract tourist on its own right,
rather they provide support services that are the core element
of tourism industry. It can thus be argued that accommodation does
not generate the tourist’s motivation for travelling.
• The motivation to travel is usually led by the desire to experience a
wider tourism product at a particular resort or locality with
accommodation as one of the crucial tourism product.
• Accommodation as a tourism product has to reflect the vital
components of any business product.
• For sustainability, a product has to be well positioned or located.
The location needs to be accessible in terms of transport, information
technology, and infrastructure.
• Location often determines the appeal and accessibility of properties.
• Typically the distance decay principle (Distance decay is a
geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or
spatial interactions. The distance decay effect states that the
interaction between two locales declines as the distance between them
increases) applies to decision making when considering
accommodation locations.
• However, accommodation is an integral part of the over all tourism
infrastructure as without it tourists will not visit the location.
• There are situations where its provision has dominated development
plans.
• Moreover, it also assists in attracting wider investment in the tourism
product at the locality.
• It is difficult to generalize about the proportion of total tourist
expenditure that is allocated to accommodation because this varies
greatly according to the market, accommodation type and nature of
product purchased.
• A generally accepted estimate is that a third of the total
trip expenditure is allocated to this sector. This figure decreases in the
case of fully inclusive package.
• In addition, accommodation acts as a catalyst for a range of
additional sales opportunities within the complex tourism and
hospitality business.
• Casino hotels have discounted accommodation in anticipation of
generating considerable profit from customers at the gaming
tables, while golfing hotels may seek to generate good profits from
green fees rather than room revenues.
• Indeed, accommodation pricing in general is a complex and
sometimes controversial area in tourism industry
TYPE OF HOTELS / CLASSIFICATION OF HOTELS
According to physical features the accommodation industry can be
broadly divided into:
1. Traditional (hotel) accommodation.
It includes hotels and motels. Hotels can further be
subdivided into various types: international, commercial, resort,
floating, heritage. There are different kinds of motels: roadside, city
motel, tourist cabinet, tourist court.
2. Supplementary accommodation.
It includes premises, which offer accommodation but not
necessarily hotel services. They are bungalows, dormitories, villas,
youth hostels, travellers lodge, circuit houses, and inns.
3. New accommodation concepts.
These are new concepts of accommodation, which have come
into being. It has the combination of both the types discussed earlier.
They include condominiums, time-sharing pensions, camping grounds,
villas, farm houses, and apart hotels .
Hotels are classified according to the hotel size, location, target markets,
levels of service, facilities provided, number of rooms, ownership and
affiliation etc.
1. Size - Or number of rooms
Under 200 rooms
200 to 399 rooms
400 to 700 rooms
More than 700 rooms
The above categories enable hotels of similar size to compare operating
procedures and statistical results.
TYPES OF HOTELS OR CLASSIFICATION OF HOTELS
BY THEIR TYPE
2. Target Markets
Hotel targets many markets and can be classified according to the markets they
attempt to attract their guests. The common type of markets includes business,
airport, suites, residential, resort, timeshare, casino, convention and conference
hotels.

business travellers and usually located in downtown or business districts. Although
Business hotels primarily serve business travellers, many tour groups, individual

telephone calls, Breakfast etc.

also entertain in an area beside the bedroom.
The Beaumont Hotel,
London - UK
The Panorama Suite; The Alpina
Gstaad - Switzerland
A classic combination of traditional Alpine
and more contemporary Swiss elements,
in which almost every detail is imbued
with a sense of history or tagged with a
high-end name, The Panorama Suite is an
exclusive private apartment embedded in
the Alps. Set over two storeys, it features
three bedrooms, two fireplaces, a huge
veranda, a private spa, an exercise room
and an outdoor Jacuzzi, the last arguably
enjoying some of the best views in
Gstaad.
The Beaumont's Room is
unique, serving as well as a
monumental artwork created by
Antony Gormley. From the
outside, Room takes the form of
a giant steel figure perched on
the edge of the building; Room’s
subtle interplay of form,
darkness and subliminal light, an
attempt, as Gormley puts it, “to
sculpt darkness”.
Extended Stay Hotels:
Extended stay hotels are somewhat similar to the suite hotels, but usually offers
kitchen amenities in the room. These kind of hotels are for long-stayers who want
to stay more than a week and does not want to spend on hotel facilities.
Serviced Apartments:

provide long-term or permanent
accommodation for Guest. Usually guest
makes a lease agreement with the hotel for the
minimum of one month up to a year. Rooms
generally include living room, bedroom,
kitchen, private balcony, washing machines,
kitchen utensils etc. Unlike normal hotels
Serviced apartment only provide weekly one
housekeeping service.
Bed and Breakfast / Homestays:
These are houses with rooms converted into
overnight facilities, this can size up to 1 to 10
guest rooms. They are also known as 'Home
Stay's'. The owner of the B&B usually stay
on the premises and is responsible for
serving breakfast to the guest.

aspect, campsites are an opportunity to
pitch the tent, the caravan or the
camping-car on equipped ground. Most
existing campings provide services and
additionnal activities such as a swimming
pool, play areas and many others.
SHELTERS
The shelters are located on the
mountains and offer a traditional and
rustic cover (regarding the sleeping
arrangements and the bathroom) to
hikers and climbers. Some shelters can
even be entirely empty, though most of
them have a guard, who can provide you
with food and drinks.

Casino Hotels:
Hotels with gambling facilities are called Casino Hotels. Although the food and
beverage operations in the casino are luxurious their functions are secondary to and
supportive of casino operations.

rooms with common showers. These
inns promote meetings and exchanges
between travellers, by providing
relaxation areas with games and books,
as well as a shared kitchen for the
preparation of meals.
Conference and Convention Centres:
These type of hotels focus on meeting and conferences and overnight
accommodation for meeting attendees. They also provide video conferencing
facility, audio visual equipment, business services, flexible seating

areas and have facilities like golf, swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness
centres, spas etc.

executives, entertainment celebrities, high- ranking political figures, and
wealthy clientele as their primary markets. They provide upscale restaurants
and lounges, Valet, concierge services and also private dining facilities.

basic need of guests. Budget hotels appeal primarily to budget-minded
travellers who want a room with minimum services and amenities required for
the comfortable stay, without unnecessary paying additional cost for costly
services.

Independent / Single Owner Hotels:
They do not have identifiable ownership or management affiliation
with other properties. Example of the same would be family owned and
operated hotel that is not following any corporate policies or
procedures.
