What are two ways that meiosis could produce gametes that contain genetic material that is
different from the parent cell?
Solution
Answer:
The two ways that meiosis could produce gametes which differ genetically from its parent cells
are as under:
(1) During meiosis, homologous chromosomes undergo independent assortment. This means that
the chromosomes associate in no way with one another. Thus, the gametes so formed may have
any combination of paternal and maternal chromosomes.
(2) Crossing over results in the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes,
resulting in recombinant chromosomes. It occurs during the pachytene stage of meiosis I. This
process gives rise to new recombinant varieties and thus the gamete so produced differ
genetically from the parentals.
