Death Valley National Park Research Paper
This was my journey to The Death Valley National Park, it was a fun and exciting three days there.
Death Valley is located in southeastern California and west of Las Vegas, Nevada. Probably the
worst part of the trip was flying, my mom and I hate flying. But after flying we go to the park and
the The Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel. Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel is located in the heart of
Death Valley with a great spot for families and adventures. This hotel is very popular and has had a
lot of good reviews. I see why it had all those good reviews. It was a very good hotel overall. It is
home to the Tollhouse Restaurant and Badwater Saloon. This hotel also has a pool which is nice
because as it is very hot we can cool down in the pool. Free ... Show more content on

The park was made a national park on October 31st 1994. There are not many ways to get to the
park. Adventurists will have to rent a car to get to to the National Park and the Hotel. The park is the
the biggest parks outside of alaska, at 3.4 million acres. The park does feel very large especially
with how hot and dry it can feel, it has gotten up to 136 degrees fahrenheit in 2012. The average
high temperature is an amazing 117 degrees Fahrenheit with a not so low of 88 degrees fahrenheit,
the month of June is not very cold. The coldest month is December with a high of 65 and a low of
38 degrees fahrenheit. But it is a hot June day with the temperature at around 110 degrees so it's not
too hot for Death Valley. As we continue on in our fantastic and cool car with air conditioning, we
see the heat coming up from the desert land. While we are driving through the lowest part in the
content at 282 feet below sea level, we see 3 coyotes. Coyotes, desert bighorns, bobcats, mountain
lions and mule deer can be seen in Death Valley National Park. The coyotes could not do much
because we were safe in our wonderfully air conditioned car. After we went passed the coyotes we
came up upon the highest part in the park which is only 15 miles away from the lowest part. The
highest part of Death Valley is Telescope Peak which is 11,049. There are more adventurous people
than me that would want to climb the mountain but my family and I won't be climbing Telescope
Peak anytime

Mimir's Price: A Short Story
Mimir's Price
The sound of a lazy brook, babbling its story night and day, always fills me with peace. Running
water through forests and rocks creates Beta waves in the brain. Maybe the thousands of asian
temples devoted to hundreds of philosophies knew this. Whether National Geographic or some other
documentary these grand temples that have stood for generations always have some talkative stream
near by. I am not sure about the science involved, but I can say I've heard the lullaby of water
playing with the small pools that rocks make. The sound always carried the comfort of Summer
visitations with my dad in Northern California. Water has defined that area of the Golden State
through the hour hand of geologic time. Water has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I would see my Father less than I liked. Yet the sounds of playful water always ferried me to his
trailer next to the creek. Even the urban sound of rain in a gutter can sweep serenity to my troubled
mind if I stopped to listen. I can not help but feel my body diminish when near the churns and
gurgles of young streams. The sounds are the keys to memories which come when called. Water
always brings them to me in what ever order they choose. Soon they will be the only ones left of the
moments spent me and Dad alone. Time has its own currents and eddies bringing us to our fates.
The Norse even talked of Fate as a the banks of a river, and the person as the current. Alzheimer's
has become my Father's fate, and time now works the peaks and valleys of his mind. My Father and
friend wakes each day to the slow eroding of memories like the current cutting the wide channel of
the Yuba River Gorge. Like the gold we sought our time exposed and washed away from his mind. I
cannot say what he will last recall. My hope is that it would be the playful tune of my beloved

Racetrack Playa
The sliding rocks of racecar playa is a phenomenal mystery that was solved. It is located in the
Death Valley National Park. Playa, is a dry lake bed, and rocks can be found on the floor of the
playa. It had always remained a mystery about how the rocks slide down across the playa, while
leaving trails behind them and cutting through the sediment. Few of these rocks weigh hundreds of
pounds, and scientists wonder how they move due to their giant masses. Racetrack playa is almost
perfectly flat and dry. It is about 2.5 miles long longitude and about 1.25 miles wide latitude. Mud
cracks usually cover up the surface and mainly salt and clay make up the sediment. Rain is rare in
the racetrack playa. It only rains a few inches per year. The rain

What Are The Similarities Between Sequoia And Kings Canyon...
The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are two of the most famous national parks in the
Sierra Nevada Range. The Sierra Nevada range is located in California along the North American
Plate. This range sits to the right of the San Andreas Fault and the Pacific Plate. Some referred to
these parks as "The Land of Giants" which turns out to fit them quite well. The parks get this name
due to the huge mountains, endless canyons and the world's largest trees they are home for
("Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks," USA Today). The Sequoia National Park was
founded on September 25th, 1890, making it the second oldest park in the United States, and Kings
Canyon National Park was established March 4th, 1940. The two parks are adjacent to one another
and stretch over approximately 865,964 acres, which a little less than 97% is woods and wilderness.
These are large tourist attractions and provide a treasured experience many people value greatly in
their lives. The reason it is such a treasured experience to tourists is because of the many special
aspects of the park that include the Giant Forest of Sequoias as well as Mount Whitney. Mount
Whitney is known for having the highest peak south of Alaska at 14,494 feet above sea level
("Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks," National Geographic). Due to the close proximity in
region of these parks they have many geological features in common. One of these features is that
they both have mountains that are part of the longest

Summary Of ' The Tale Of Kurochi '
Autumn Browder
9–21–17
#4
The Tale of Kurochi In a far away land, secluded away from society and the rest of the world, there
was a beautiful land. This land was called Heiwana. Heiwana was a very calm and peaceful realm,
full of magical creatures. There was a huge, rich, and plentiful kingdom in the middle of the land,
and on each side there were two different realms. On one side, was a huge forest, with the tallest
trees you would ever see. The forest was riddled with imps, fairies, orcs, dwarves, and other
mystical beings. Including witches and wizards. One the other side of the kingdom, was a large,
dried out, desolate desert. Despite the fact the forest was full of more species of creatures, the desert

This tunnel was tiny, no one older than the age of seventeen would be able to fit through, unless if
they were smaller than normal. The valley also had a small stream that was connected to waterfalls
on hills that were across the valley from each other.
In this particular valley, there was one small, cozy cottage in the middle. Surrounded by abundant
herb gardens and livestock, this cottage was miniscule in comparison to the humongous valley. This
cottage, was home to an old woman. The old woman's name was Maria Jenkins, but most people
had called her Madam Jenkins. Madam Jenkins was a plump old woman, with a kind face, and dull
green eyes. Madam Jenkins's hair was grey by now, after many years of living(seventy three to be
exact), and it was always kept in a messy bun atop her head. However, her hair bun was usually
hidden by her large sunhat, which she used to block out the sun as she tend to the garden she owned.
Madam Jenkins was not entirely alone, sure she had fairies and sheep, but her important company,
was her small granddaughter, of only age six. Her granddaughter's name was Sophie, Sophie
Jenkins. Sophie had big, oak brown eyes, with dusty brown hair to match. Sophie's hair was usually
kept in a long braid, that went just past her chest. Sophie was a small and scrawny girl, who was

How To Write An Essay About Death Valley
I waited for what seemed like forever! Finally, I packed my bags for my 2,173.5 mile journey from
my small town, Alexander City, Alabama, to the border of California and Nevada. I had a one week
stay at the Furnace Creek Resort. I couldn't believe that I was about witness a week full of lifetime
experiences. Death Valley, America's largest national park, is known for extremes. Death Valley is
also North America's hottest spot, each year recording "deadly" temperatures. On average
temperatures are anywhere around 113 degrees fahrenheit, but on July 10, 1913 there was a
recorded scorching temperature of 134 degrees fahrenheit. This monster valley is also the driest spot
in America only averaging less than 2 inches of rainfall each year. This national park is 3.4 million
acres of sand dunes, canyons, valleys, mountains and salt flats. Lastly, this park contains the lowest
point on our continent, 234 feet below sea level. Even with all of Death Valley's extremes, the
national park gets over one million visitors every year. As, my trip went on I discovered many
amazing things about Death Valley and some of its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

continent." Almost 550 miles of Death Valley lay under sea level. Not only does Death Valley
contain the lowest point in North America there is also a mountain peak over 11,000 feet. The
busiest time at this national treasure is spring time. In mid April and early May you can see a variety
of wildflowers, that also make Death Valley a treasure. Wildflowers blooming right now are Lupine,

National Parks
The National Parks
National Parks are a very crucial part of the United States, and serve to differentiate it from other
countries. National Parks, unlike other landmarks around the world, are not owned by wealthy
families but by the citizens of our country. 3.4% of US land is made up of the 59 National Parks.
The first National Park, Yellowstone National Park, came into existence on March 1, 1872. It was
introduced as "a public park or pleasuring–ground" (nps.gov) which means that it was for the people
of this nation to enjoy. The parks were created to preserve some of America's land to keep it how it
was in the beginning; untouched by mankind. Long ago, Theodore Roosevelt said that the parks
were created "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." (www.nationalparkstraveler.org)It is true
that anyone can go visit a National Park and enjoy the beauty, but there are rules that exist to
preserve the condition of the park. Some of the rules are: no building or logging allowed in the
parks, nothing can be taken from them, and no trash can be left behind. Park Rangers who are part
of the National Park Service enforce the rules and make sure that they are obeyed. They also help
with touring visitors and offering them their help.
The National Park that I have studied is Death Valley National Park located in California and
Nevada. It was a large tourist attraction in the 1920s, but it was officially recognized in 1933 when
it was declared a National Monument. It was not

Death Valley National Park was Very Different in the Past...
When one thinks of Death Valley National Park in California, the first image that comes to mind is
usually an endless desert of dry, cracked terrain or rippling sand with little wildlife or vegetation.
While that is what you'll find in most of Death Valley today, it wasn't always so. During the
Holocene Eon and the Pleistocene ice ages, Death Valley had its fair share of streams and rivers,
many of which originated from the nearby mountains. In fact, the driest area of Death Valley today
was once an island! During that time, glaciers had formed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and
water from the rivers cascaded into the area now known as Shoreline Butte, forming Lake Manly; a
lake that was estimate to be almost 600 feet deep! The evidence of ... Show more content on

The ripples on the sand dunes form when the sand starts to pile up high enough to cause a slope on
the wind–blowing side of the dune. Once the sand piles up past the angle of repose, approximately
30 degrees, the extra weight causes it to become unstable. The sand particles making up this extra
weight then slips down the other side of the slope.
At the center of Death Valley National Park is Furnace Creek. Unlike much of Death Valley, a wide
variety of desert plants and animals call this oasis home and visitors can enjoy all the amenities at
the Furnace Creek Inn and Resort complex; including its lush green golf course and refreshing
swimming pool. There are a few other areas of the park that are just as jaw–dropping; the Saline
Valley Marsh in the West, the Cottonball Marsh in the central part of the park and Saratoga Springs
and Valley Springs, to the south. So why is there such a drastic difference between these rare
habitats within Death Valley National Park and the others? The answer is simple ... the accessibility
of water. These areas either have large ponds, some measuring six acres or more, or are fed by
several of the parks natural springs. Saratoga Springs in particular is home to some very rare species
not found anywhere else in the world including the Saratoga Springs Pupfish, the Amargosa Spring
Snail and the Death Valley June bug. Due to the rate of evaporation in this extremely dry climate

Mastery Vs Death Valley Summary
Education has been in the world for a very long time. It is dated all the way back to the 1880's when
the first republican school was made for boys and girls under the age of fifteen. School was way
different then than it is now. There were different rules and standards, different ages, and gender
separation. In the united states in 1918, school was first declared mandatory for children until age 14
in all the states. Therefore, there are many different viewpoints and opinions that different ages and
genres of people might have on this topic. Though there are many different perspectives the
standard definition is developing the power of reasoning and judgment, and generally preparing
oneself intellectually for a mature life. In Daniel Pink's article, "Mastery", and in Sir Ken Robinson's
ted talk, "How to escape educations Death Valley", these two men talk about their views on what
education really is or might be and how to best educate other people. ... Show more content on

Flow as Daniel Pink states is "[When] the relationship between what a person had to do and what he
could do was perfect" (115). Pink indicates that achieving flow in multiple areas of one's life versus
striving for perfection in simply one portion creates a form of flow. Like the flow of life education is
a style of flow; it is a way of living. Daniel Pink explains that furthering your own education is very
important in succeeding economically. This is true. The economy is decreasing especially in money.

The Portrayal Of Jesus In Death Valley
Although this is true this story contains many a violence in it. This film begins in the regin of Herod
the Great, who died in 4BC. Told by three magi a new king has been born, thus causing a mass
murder of local children by the hands of Herod. This massacre only takes place in the book of
Matthew's, and does not seem to be aforementioned in any non–biblical sources. Johns gospels
seem to Imply that Jesus was born in Nazareth and not in Bethlehem. This doesn put the film off
though. Herod send a group of black–clad horsemen to slaughter a group of wide–eyed infants on a
playground. Even if the massacre did happen, the staging here owes a lot more to Sergei Eisenstein
than to the Bible. Jesus ends up surviving the purge and rejoins the story at about the age of 30.
According to the films Beautiful yet very distinctive locations, Jesus appears to be living in Death
Valley. In Death Valley, or as some would have it, a desert somewhere in the levant, Jesus is
Tempted by an old man. "How'd you like to be the ruler of all this, hmm?" the hermit asks,
indicating the landscape. Those who are familiar with the synoptic Gospels will gather that the old
man is supposed to portray Satan, trying to turn Jesus away from God. Jesus performed many of
miracles. Jesus heals a few of the sick upon his return, but the ... Show more content on

The film also speculates that Judas Iscariot and Barabbas were associates, and that Judas handed
Jesus over to the authorities to "force his hand", believing nothing other than his own life being on

Judas, but does imply that he was motivated more than anything else by simple greed. This is not

Shovelbug Research Paper
My beast, also known as the shovelbug, lives in a desert ecosystem with cold nights and scorching
hot days. Due to these weather changes, the invertebrate has adapted to the environment in a couple
of ways, which will be explained later. Even though there is very little of it, the vegetation that is
found there includes low–lying grasses/mosses and cacti. These patches of grass are scattered
throughout the desert and there may be a variety of different species building their habitats in them.
Aside from being a home to native species, the patches of grass may also be hiding predators
waiting to strike. Lastly, is the soil in this environment which plays a big role in the shovelbug's
survival. This soil is very hard for most organisms to dig through, which is what makes this insect

It is a small invertebrate with multiple adaptations to survive in the desert ecosystem. For starters,
this insect has very strong mandibles which can instantly kill the shovelbug's prey. However, the
way it traps its prey in the first place is the interesting part. Similar to an antlion, the shovelbug digs
a small pit in the sand with its shovel–like legs, hence the name shovelbug. Soon after, an
unknowing insect may wander into this pit and become food as a result. Having said that, this isn't
all it does to capture prey. This insect actually creates a web identical to that of a spider's which
ensures that the shovelbug's food won't be escaping. Additionally, my beast has developed long,
oval–shaped wings like the ones you would find on dragonflies. This adaptation makes for a quick
escape if the shovelbug comes across a dangerous predator. Another adaptation to avoid predators is
the hard exoskeleton which helps them blend into their environment. This exoskeleton was
originally just camouflaged flesh that would change color depending on the surroundings. It still
serves the same purpose with the additional benefit of a

The Mystery of Rocks
The Mystery of Rocks
In geology, a rock is solid, naturally occurring, is made up of one or more minerals. Rocks are lying
on the ground everywhere. Death Valley National Park is in the U.S. states of California and
Nevada. It contains many mysteries, involving one of nature's strangest phenomenon where rocks
seem to move all around on their own. In the remote, almost totally dry lakebed called Racetrack
Playa, some of the rocks move across the desert when people aren't watching. What makes the rocks
move? Although, nobody has seen the rocks in motion, the leading theory is wind and ice.
The Racetrack is a scenic dry lake with sailing stones crossing it. It is located on the northwestern
side of Death Valley, in Death Valley National Park, California, U.S. The playa is flat surface, dry
without any plants and it doesn't rain that much. When its dry in the Playa, the surface is covered
with small, but solid mud crack polygons. The sailing stones are a geological event found in the
Racetrack. Big rocks ranging hundred pounds are found in the Playa (King2). They carve and make
tracks as they move across the playa floor by themselves going uphills and in a different directions
without human or animal action. Scientists have been studied this case for many years, but no one
has seen the stones moving with their own eyes. Photo 1 below shows where Racetrack Playa is

Previously, the geology of Death Valley National Park and Yosemite National Park in the Basin and

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in the Sierra Nevada Range in California. The Sequoia
National Park is also 629 square miles and includes 403,482 acres while Kings Canyon is 722
square miles with 461,901 acres(739). Interestingly enough, in Spanish Sierra Nevada means
"snow–covered mountain" although many people think that it doesn't snow in California. Since the

there will be similarities and differences in their geology. It's also possible ... Show more content on

This area is also characterized by asymmetrical mountain with slighter slopes on the western regions
allowing for softer streams to create alluvial fans and steeper slopes on the eastern side as a result of
erosion from ice, rain, and wind. There have also been earthquakes there recently which means that
there is an ongoing mountain building process(pg.746). One example of similarities between the
three parks are the exfoliation domes found in them. In Kings Canyon, there are many large granite
domes, for example, the Kettle dome, Tehiphite, and the Obelisk while in Sequoia the exfoliation
domes are Beetle Rock, Moro Rock, and Alla peak(pg.742). While Sierra Nevada's largest glacier,
Palisade Glacier, is located at the Sequoia and Kings National Park, the textbook –Geology of
National Parks–focused more on the impact glaciers had on the domes in Yosemite. The domes
Mount Broderick and Liberty Cap became rounded, smooth, and polished on the side where the
glacier overrode it. The El Capitan granite rock formation and Half dome are called nunataks
because they are above the glaciers and were not overridden by it. Glaciers along with the rocks
underlying them were important in creating the

Iowa Wild : Nature Always Wears The Colors Of The Spirit
Iowa Wild
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit. –Ralph Waldo Emerson
I sleep the sleep of mothers–which is to say, I wake at the noises my husband snores through. In the
waxing light of day, coyotes yip and howl a few miles down the creek. Though these tricksters are
no threat to us, their calls have woken me early. Grabbing my glasses, I sit up and soak in the rare
site of my boys peacefully lying next to one another–no arguing, no wrestling, no teasing. Three
daddy longlegs cling to the inside of the tent; one just inches away from Batman's plastic nose.
Saylor eats, plays, and sleeps in the comic universe, but that tiny arachnid would scare him worse
than if the apocalyptic horrors found in his stories actually came to life. I debate about climbing
over everyone to reach it. If I don't remove the thing and Saylor wakes, all hell will break loose. If I
reach over to remove it, I will likely wake someone up and erase my rare chance at some alone time
zen in the wilderness. I choose zen.
The northeastern part of my home state lures me in each summer. It sings in the ancient language of
deeply carved river valleys and teaches wisdom from lofty limestone bluffs. This Driftless Area,
untouched by the last of the glaciers and unlike the more well–known topography of the corn belt,
welcomes my family when we have a desire to wade knee deep in trout fishing heaven.

dangerous, but I had learned the names of the 2 people next to me they were Aleala Wolf and
Baldwin Rorick. Even though I wanted to escape with the others there was the pull of the Cultists

they rot in these cells, Die by the hands of these Cultists? This was the one chance to do what I had
not those long months ago to not run away In times of need, to not lose everyone I ever knew in a

Is it the next morning, evening, afternoon? I had lost track of time as there was no light other than
the torches lit above and in every cell and in the darkness of the corridors the voices... it could have
been weeks, months, or even years No! I have to keep it together and never fall back to the dark
place or every hope, dream, and future of every other person in these cells is lost. As I cleared my
mind a voice startled me out of my mind
"You want out?" Said a softer voice
"Uhh..." said Kanji as he turned to see a pale girl
"I never wanted to be here... to become this but I was imprisoned just like you in a cell watching
everyone around me being slaughtered I had no other option so I submitted and here I am." Said the

The Timbisha are a Native American tribe that is federally recognized as the Death Valley Timbisha
Shoshone Band of California. Located in Death Valley National Park, which neighbors the
California−Nevada border, their headquarters are centered in Furnace Creek. Pauline Esteves,
Maddy Esteves, and Joe Kennedy are the most prominent members of the tribe. In 2004, Joe
Kennedy was elected tribal chairman and is currently a spokesperson for the tribe. Pauline Esteves,

Congress passed the Treaty of Ruby Valley in 1863 (Greene) – ratified in 1866 – granting the U.S.

Death Valley Essay
Death Valley is a native American reservation located in Utah and approximately a 30 minute drive
from the Army's Dugway Proving Ground, a military installation less than 100 miles from Salt Lake
City, Utah. On the early morning of March 15, 1968, thousands of sheep within the town started
showing signs and symptoms of an odd, peculiar disease; they were unable to come to their feet and
without the ability to keep their necks straight, soon after, they were lying dead in the farms across
the town. This incident, which became known as The Dugway Proving Ground Accident, generated
national attention, in an era marred by public political unrest and an American public highly
suspicious of their government. The majority of Death Valley depended ... Show more content on

There has been a lot of speculation, but significant efforts by Utah State University and the
Department of Agriculture scientists have not been able to name an exact causal chain association
between the testing conducted on March 13 1968 and the deaths of the sheep. Filled with
emblematic value in the state of Utah, the Dugway sheep incident is constantly raised up at public
hearings as one of the main reasons the people of Utah have not trust in the Government and more

Background Information of Death Valley Essay
Background Information of Death Valley
Established as a National Park in 1933 under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Death Valley is
the largest national park in the continental United States even though its total length is no more than
approximately 100 miles in length. The valley is located in the Mojave Desert in eastern California
and is surrounded by the Amargosa Range on the east, the Panamint Range on the west, and the
Sylvania Mountains and Owlshead Mountains on the northern and southern boundaries. The
topography of this region is varied and complex; and has a lengthy geologic history that explains
why it is riddled with a variety of sand dunes, craters, and flood–carved canyons to name a few. The
total area of the valley is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immediately following the upheaval, various collisions between the Pacific and Farralon plates
resulted in the reversal of the original plate movement. At one point, some geologist believe that
Death Valley and the surrounding mountains Panamint, Black, and Cottonwood were actually all
stacked on top of each other and the separation lead to the present valley.
Precambrian: Death Valley Dawn – 1.8 billion to 570 million years ago
The oldest rocks found in the Death Valley region were formed in the Precambrian time period no
more than 1.8 billion years ago during the latter half of the Proterozoic Eon. The rocks are seen on
the steep face of the Black Mountains above the current area of Badwater and were formed via
deposits of mud and sand from an ancient volcanic mountain belt. Sometime between 1.8 and 1.7
billion years ago, the volcanic and sedimentary rocks were severely altered when chemical or
structural changes occurred because of intense heat or pressure from the Earth's core. Because of
this process, any fossilized information about the region was lost making it impossible to truly
understand the origin of the region. There is some debate on whether basalt or schist was the
original and dominate rock in the region before it was transformed into contorted gneiss, but again,
there is no way to prove either theory.
Evidence in the Mosaic Canyon; however, do suggest that the area was covered by a warm

The Long Profile Of A River
Introduction
In this investigation, I will be investigating the changes along the long profile of a river. In order to
do this, I will be collecting data and making observations at three different points along the river;
the upper course, the middle course, and the lower course.
The river which I will be conducting my observations would be on Bartley Water. Bartley Water is a
river going through the New Forest which is located in the south of the UK, Hampshire. The source
of the river begins from Bartley, 109m above sea level, and joins to its end at Eling, flowing into
Southampton Water. The river has a length of 27km and a catchment area of 40sqkm. It is a tributary
of the River Test. The river bed contains of a mixture of sand, silt and clay which can change as the
river behaves due to erosion, transportation and deposition.
The sites which I will be investigating on are:
Site one is at Buskett's Lawn, grid reference: 309109
Site two is at Woodlands, grid reference: 325006
Site three is at Eling, grid reference: 362124
The surroundings of these areas differ at each site. Site one is mostly rural areas whereas, when it
moves onto the last site, it becomes an urban area. These will affect on the course and direction of
the river and its characteristics.
The long profile of a river describes how the characteristics of the river vary from the upper course
to the lower course. A quicker and easier way to present this idea is through a Bradshaw Model (see

A Walk Through the Peaceful Valley: A Glance at the History of Arcadia, Nebraska
As you walk down the streets of Arcadia, Nebraska, you look from side to side and see nothing
more than a quiet little town. What you probably aren't aware of is the history behind this "little
town". Arcadia is built off of determination, character, and distinctiveness. As you make your way
down Main Street, you start to grasp a glimpse of the past. Arcadia, Nebraska is a village with quite
a story to tell. Not many people know how Arcadia was founded or even how it came to be. Arcadia
has dealt with struggles and overcome tragedies, whereas most towns simply would have died away.
In addition to the charm of Arcadia's perseverance, there are also many fun ... Show more content on

This town is significant, because it is where most of Arcadia's early inhabitants came from. Most
were people from Lee's Park that had moved so they could be close to the railroad that was built to
run through Arcadia. When Arcadia first became a town, on October 3, 1885, the town shared a
school with Lee's Park. (A View of the Valley 25). As Arcadia's population grew, the demand for a
school within the town itself became a constant demand, and eventually the two towns split the
school. As a result, Lee's Park diminished population–wise and continued spiraling downward until
the town was completely gone. By about 1890, Arcadia's population had climbed to nearly 429
people. (A View of the Valley 25). Businesses began popping up all around town and people began
to settle in and make a life for themselves in this peaceful valley. By 1900, there were over 35 local
businesses. Some of these businesses include a barber shop, bowling alley, variety store, bank,
lumber yard, two grocery stores, two drug stores, and two cafés. Just as people began to settle in, the
town began to test the perseverance of the inhabitants, by throwing struggles at them in every way
possible. The struggles that Arcadia has overcome are absolutely enormous. Before Arcadia became
a town, the early settlers of the land were given a taste of the natural forces Arcadia can give out.
Right away the primary pioneers dealt with grasshoppers obliterating everything in sight.

saltgrass (Distichlis stricta) and arrowweed (Pluchea sericea) occur more distal. The dominant

Miocene volcanic rocks that form the Timber Mountains and Oasis valley caldera complex border
the basin to the north (Christiansen et al., 1977) and extend southward beneath the basin. Most of
these volcanic rocks are silicic ignimbrites that are 9.5–16 Ma (Christiansen et al., 1977). These
volcanic rocks are overlain by moderately to highly deformed siltstone, fanglomerates, tuff, and
limestone that have been correlated to the Furnace Creek Formation of Death Valley (Hunt and

Pliocene to Pleistocene sediments composes the basin fill in the Amargosa desert, with most of the
rocks comprising Mg–rich clay deposits of Pliocene age. The exposed parts of the Pliocene basin
rocks are dominated by clays and carbonate rocks on the eastern part of the basin with
comparatively few outcrops on the western part of the basin. Thickness of the Pliocene sequence

With the information at hand, Pare argues that it is easy for one to assume Fenton moved the
cannonballs, but with everything he knows about the rest of Fenton's photographs and career, it
wouldn't make a logical conclusion for him to have moved the cannonballs. Pare goes on to say that
both images are powerful, with and without the cannonballs, however the image becomes a little
more interesting with the cannonballs included. Either way both versions of the photograph
demonstrate a chilling, silent expression of the silent horrors of war. Pare points out that the most
interesting fact is that Fenton captured two images from the same viewpoint in the first place, this
wasn't something Fenton did as part of his normal

and morbid facts, but it is nothing of the sort. The United States has a lot protected areas known has
National Parks, and Death Valley is one of them. Located in California near the border of Nevada,
this National Park has some precious assets. Surrounded by a unique type of nature with an
outstanding beauty, Death Valley National Park has a wide variety of activity, and some important
challenges.
One of the simplest ways to appreciate the beauty of this National Park is to know its background.

Three Tabs in Death Valley I was so nervous to go into a convince store to buy a coke or a water or

Adam and I stopped at a convince store to buy what we needed. I kept my sunglasses on and the
kind old man behind the counter looked like he knew what was up, but I was so thrashed and my
mind was swirling around like blender blades, so I wasn't entirely sure. All was well though, as I
handed the man behind the counter cash, got back my change, grabbed my granola bar and can of
coke, and started to be on my way. Then, as I turned to exit the store,

Ashleigh Hartsock Death Valley Patterned ground in Death Valley "Salt can be thought of as the
warm form of ice. In some extreme cases, geologists that go to Death Valley substitute salt into their

whose surface has developed orderly patterns, such as polygons, circles, steplike forms (terracettes),
and stripes" (Hunt, Charles B., Robinson, Bowles, Washburn; B104), is characteristic of and reaches
a great level of development in areas of intense frost action, such as high–latitude and alpine regions

al.; 1966). In fact, Hunt (1975) states that "since the ground patterns of the two regions are similar,
salt can be thought of as the warm form of ice." In the saltpan of Death Valley and the surrounding
floodplain similarities of patterned ground between these two types of regions can be seen, and will
be further described in this paper. Patterned Ground of Death Valley: The patterned ground
morphologies, characteristic of playa environments, which formed as a result of the expansion and
contraction of saline–rich sediments, are similar to such crack morphologies seen in periglacial
environments, as a result of freeze–thaw cycles. In periglacial environments the extent of
development of patterned grounds is proportional to the intensity of frost action, while in playa
environments; the extent of patterned ground is proportional to salt content (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). The
prominent patterned ground morphology among colder climates is ice–wedge polygons that develop
on the permanently frozen ground. Similarly to the permanently frozen grounds of periglacial
environments, a salt hardened ground in a playa environment can develop extensive polygonal crack
morphologies (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). In desert regions, such as Death Valley, desiccation cracks that
lead to the formation of polygonal systems are the most prominent crack morphologies. The general
rapid drying of fine grained sediments within the Death Valley Basin leads to

Adventures of Death Valley National Park
This summer, Alice decided that she was going to go to Death Valley National Park in California.
There was only one problem. When Alice asked her parents if she could go, they said no. Alice
could only go if she could find at least two friends to go with her. Alice asked her two best friends,
Lea and Rachel. They said yes! Alice was so excited, "This is going to be the best summer ever!"
The three girls met up together at Alice's house to discuss what they were going to need to pack.
"What is the weather like so I know what to pack," Rachel questioned Alice? Well, since the climate
is arid and hot, with dry air masses trapped in the valley because there are mountains on both sides,
you would probably need shorts and a tank top to keep cool. "Probably, you will need shorts, tank
tops, hiking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses," Alice replied. "A hat too," Lea inquired? Alice
answered, "Yes." Alice's friends didn't really know what Death Valley was or why it was called
Death Valley so she gave a little detail about it. "Death Valley is the lowest point on the contiguous
U.S, which is 282 feet below sea level. Death Valley is located near the highest point on the
contiguous U.S., which is about 76 miles away. On February 11, 1933, President Herbert Hoover
made Death Valley a national monument and in 1944 Death Valley was re–designated as a national

Death Valley National Park Research Paper

  • 1. Death Valley National Park Research Paper This was my journey to The Death Valley National Park, it was a fun and exciting three days there. Death Valley is located in southeastern California and west of Las Vegas, Nevada. Probably the worst part of the trip was flying, my mom and I hate flying. But after flying we go to the park and the The Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel. Stovepipe Wells Village Hotel is located in the heart of Death Valley with a great spot for families and adventures. This hotel is very popular and has had a lot of good reviews. I see why it had all those good reviews. It was a very good hotel overall. It is home to the Tollhouse Restaurant and Badwater Saloon. This hotel also has a pool which is nice because as it is very hot we can cool down in the pool. Free ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The park was made a national park on October 31st 1994. There are not many ways to get to the park. Adventurists will have to rent a car to get to to the National Park and the Hotel. The park is the the biggest parks outside of alaska, at 3.4 million acres. The park does feel very large especially with how hot and dry it can feel, it has gotten up to 136 degrees fahrenheit in 2012. The average high temperature is an amazing 117 degrees Fahrenheit with a not so low of 88 degrees fahrenheit, the month of June is not very cold. The coldest month is December with a high of 65 and a low of 38 degrees fahrenheit. But it is a hot June day with the temperature at around 110 degrees so it's not too hot for Death Valley. As we continue on in our fantastic and cool car with air conditioning, we see the heat coming up from the desert land. While we are driving through the lowest part in the content at 282 feet below sea level, we see 3 coyotes. Coyotes, desert bighorns, bobcats, mountain lions and mule deer can be seen in Death Valley National Park. The coyotes could not do much because we were safe in our wonderfully air conditioned car. After we went passed the coyotes we came up upon the highest part in the park which is only 15 miles away from the lowest part. The highest part of Death Valley is Telescope Peak which is 11,049. There are more adventurous people than me that would want to climb the mountain but my family and I won't be climbing Telescope Peak anytime ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Mimir's Price: A Short Story Mimir's Price The sound of a lazy brook, babbling its story night and day, always fills me with peace. Running water through forests and rocks creates Beta waves in the brain. Maybe the thousands of asian temples devoted to hundreds of philosophies knew this. Whether National Geographic or some other documentary these grand temples that have stood for generations always have some talkative stream near by. I am not sure about the science involved, but I can say I've heard the lullaby of water playing with the small pools that rocks make. The sound always carried the comfort of Summer visitations with my dad in Northern California. Water has defined that area of the Golden State through the hour hand of geologic time. Even the urban sound of rain in a gutter can sweep serenity to my troubled mind if I stopped to listen. I can not help but feel my body diminish when near the churns and gurgles of young streams. The sounds are the keys to memories which come when called. Water always brings them to me in what ever order they choose. Soon they will be the only ones left of the moments spent me and Dad alone. Time has its own currents and eddies bringing us to our fates. The Norse even talked of Fate as a the banks of a river, and the person as the current. Alzheimer's has become my Father's fate, and time now works the peaks and valleys of his mind. My Father and friend wakes each day to the slow eroding of memories like the current cutting the wide channel of the Yuba River Gorge. Playa, is a dry lake bed, and rocks can be found on the floor of the playa. It had always remained a mystery about how the rocks slide down across the playa, while leaving trails behind them and cutting through the sediment. Few of these rocks weigh hundreds of pounds, and scientists wonder how they move due to their giant masses. Racetrack playa is almost perfectly flat and dry. It is about 2.5 miles long longitude and about 1.25 miles wide latitude. Mud cracks usually cover up the surface and mainly salt and clay make up the sediment. Rain is rare in the racetrack playa. • 5. What Are The Similarities Between Sequoia And Kings Canyon... The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are two of the most famous national parks in the Sierra Nevada Range. The Sierra Nevada range is located in California along the North American Plate. This range sits to the right of the San Andreas Fault and the Pacific Plate. Some referred to these parks as "The Land of Giants" which turns out to fit them quite well. The parks get this name due to the huge mountains, endless canyons and the world's largest trees they are home for ("Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks," USA Today). The Sequoia National Park was founded on September 25th, 1890, making it the second oldest park in the United States, and Kings Canyon National Park was established March 4th, 1940. The two parks are adjacent to one another and stretch over approximately 865,964 acres, which a little less than 97% is woods and wilderness. These are large tourist attractions and provide a treasured experience many people value greatly in their lives. The reason it is such a treasured experience to tourists is because of the many special aspects of the park that include the Giant Forest of Sequoias as well as Mount Whitney. Mount Whitney is known for having the highest peak south of Alaska at 14,494 feet above sea level ("Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks," National Geographic). Due to the close proximity in region of these parks they have many geological features in common. One of these features is that they both have mountains that are part of the longest ... This land was called Heiwana. Heiwana was a very calm and peaceful realm, full of magical creatures. There was a huge, rich, and plentiful kingdom in the middle of the land, and on each side there were two different realms. On one side, was a huge forest, with the tallest trees you would ever see. The forest was riddled with imps, fairies, orcs, dwarves, and other mystical beings. Including witches and wizards. One the other side of the kingdom, was a large, dried out, desolate desert. Surrounded by abundant herb gardens and livestock, this cottage was miniscule in comparison to the humongous valley. This cottage, was home to an old woman. I couldn't believe that I was about witness a week full of lifetime experiences. Death Valley, America's largest national park, is known for extremes. Death Valley is also North America's hottest spot, each year recording "deadly" temperatures. On average temperatures are anywhere around 113 degrees fahrenheit, but on July 10, 1913 there was a recorded scorching temperature of 134 degrees fahrenheit. This monster valley is also the driest spot in America only averaging less than 2 inches of rainfall each year. This national park is 3.4 million acres of sand dunes, canyons, valleys, mountains and salt flats. Lastly, this park contains the lowest point on our continent, 234 feet below sea level. Even with all of Death Valley's extremes, the national park gets over one million visitors every year. As, my trip went on I discovered many amazing things about Death Valley and some of its ... • 8. National Parks The National Parks National Parks are a very crucial part of the United States, and serve to differentiate it from other countries. National Parks, unlike other landmarks around the world, are not owned by wealthy families but by the citizens of our country. 3.4% of US land is made up of the 59 National Parks. The first National Park, Yellowstone National Park, came into existence on March 1, 1872. It was introduced as "a public park or pleasuring–ground" (nps.gov) which means that it was for the people of this nation to enjoy. The parks were created to preserve some of America's land to keep it how it was in the beginning; untouched by mankind. Long ago, Theodore Roosevelt said that the parks were created "for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." (www.nationalparkstraveler.org)It is true that anyone can go visit a National Park and enjoy the beauty, but there are rules that exist to preserve the condition of the park. Some of the rules are: no building or logging allowed in the parks, nothing can be taken from them, and no trash can be left behind. Park Rangers who are part of the National Park Service enforce the rules and make sure that they are obeyed. They also help with touring visitors and offering them their help. It was a large tourist attraction in the 1920s, but it was officially recognized in 1933 when it was declared a National Monument. It was not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Death Valley National Park was Very Different in the Past... When one thinks of Death Valley National Park in California, the first image that comes to mind is usually an endless desert of dry, cracked terrain or rippling sand with little wildlife or vegetation. While that is what you'll find in most of Death Valley today, it wasn't always so. During the Holocene Eon and the Pleistocene ice ages, Death Valley had its fair share of streams and rivers, many of which originated from the nearby mountains. In fact, the driest area of Death Valley today was once an island! During that time, glaciers had formed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and water from the rivers cascaded into the area now known as Shoreline Butte, forming Lake Manly; a lake that was estimate to be almost 600 feet deep! The evidence of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ripples on the sand dunes form when the sand starts to pile up high enough to cause a slope on the wind–blowing side of the dune. Once the sand piles up past the angle of repose, approximately 30 degrees, the extra weight causes it to become unstable. The sand particles making up this extra weight then slips down the other side of the slope. At the center of Death Valley National Park is Furnace Creek. Unlike much of Death Valley, a wide variety of desert plants and animals call this oasis home and visitors can enjoy all the amenities at the Furnace Creek Inn and Resort complex; including its lush green golf course and refreshing swimming pool. There are a few other areas of the park that are just as jaw–dropping; the Saline Valley Marsh in the West, the Cottonball Marsh in the central part of the park and Saratoga Springs and Valley Springs, to the south. So why is there such a drastic difference between these rare habitats within Death Valley National Park and the others? The answer is simple ... the accessibility of water. These areas either have large ponds, some measuring six acres or more, or are fed by several of the parks natural springs. Saratoga Springs in particular is home to some very rare species not found anywhere else in the world including the Saratoga Springs Pupfish, the Amargosa Spring Snail and the Death Valley June bug. • 10. Mastery Vs Death Valley Summary Education has been in the world for a very long time. It is dated all the way back to the 1880's when the first republican school was made for boys and girls under the age of fifteen. School was way different then than it is now. There were different rules and standards, different ages, and gender separation. In the united states in 1918, school was first declared mandatory for children until age 14 in all the states. Therefore, there are many different viewpoints and opinions that different ages and genres of people might have on this topic. Though there are many different perspectives the standard definition is developing the power of reasoning and judgment, and generally preparing oneself intellectually for a mature life. Told by three magi a new king has been born, thus causing a mass murder of local children by the hands of Herod. This massacre only takes place in the book of Matthew's, and does not seem to be aforementioned in any non–biblical sources. Johns gospels seem to Imply that Jesus was born in Nazareth and not in Bethlehem. This doesn put the film off though. Herod send a group of black–clad horsemen to slaughter a group of wide–eyed infants on a playground. Even if the massacre did happen, the staging here owes a lot more to Sergei Eisenstein than to the Bible. Jesus ends up surviving the purge and rejoins the story at about the age of 30. According to the films Beautiful yet very distinctive locations, Jesus appears to be living in Death Valley. In Death Valley, or as some would have it, a desert somewhere in the levant, Jesus is Tempted by an old man. "How'd you like to be the ruler of all this, hmm?" the hermit asks, indicating the landscape. Due to these weather changes, the invertebrate has adapted to the environment in a couple of ways, which will be explained later. Even though there is very little of it, the vegetation that is found there includes low–lying grasses/mosses and cacti. These patches of grass are scattered throughout the desert and there may be a variety of different species building their habitats in them. Aside from being a home to native species, the patches of grass may also be hiding predators waiting to strike. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a small invertebrate with multiple adaptations to survive in the desert ecosystem. For starters, this insect has very strong mandibles which can instantly kill the shovelbug's prey. However, the way it traps its prey in the first place is the interesting part. Similar to an antlion, the shovelbug digs a small pit in the sand with its shovel–like legs, hence the name shovelbug. Soon after, an unknowing insect may wander into this pit and become food as a result. Having said that, this isn't all it does to capture prey. This insect actually creates a web identical to that of a spider's which ensures that the shovelbug's food won't be escaping. Additionally, my beast has developed long, oval–shaped wings like the ones you would find on dragonflies. This adaptation makes for a quick escape if the shovelbug comes across a dangerous predator. Another adaptation to avoid predators is the hard exoskeleton which helps them blend into their environment. • 14. The Mystery of Rocks The Mystery of Rocks In geology, a rock is solid, naturally occurring, is made up of one or more minerals. Rocks are lying on the ground everywhere. Death Valley National Park is in the U.S. states of California and Nevada. It contains many mysteries, involving one of nature's strangest phenomenon where rocks seem to move all around on their own. In the remote, almost totally dry lakebed called Racetrack Playa, some of the rocks move across the desert when people aren't watching. What makes the rocks move? Although, nobody has seen the rocks in motion, the leading theory is wind and ice. The Racetrack is a scenic dry lake with sailing stones crossing it. It is located on the northwestern side of Death Valley, in Death Valley National Park, California, U.S. The playa is flat surface, dry without any plants and it doesn't rain that much. When its dry in the Playa, the surface is covered with small, but solid mud crack polygons. The sailing stones are a geological event found in the Racetrack. Big rocks ranging hundred pounds are found in the Playa (King2). They carve and make tracks as they move across the playa floor by themselves going uphills and in a different directions without human or animal action. Scientists have been studied this case for many years, but no one has seen the stones moving with their own eyes. Photo 1 below shows where Racetrack Playa is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One example of similarities between the three parks are the exfoliation domes found in them. In Kings Canyon, there are many large granite domes, for example, the Kettle dome, Tehiphite, and the Obelisk while in Sequoia the exfoliation domes are Beetle Rock, Moro Rock, and Alla peak(pg.742). Precambrian: Death Valley Dawn – 1.8 billion to 570 million years ago The oldest rocks found in the Death Valley region were formed in the Precambrian time period no more than 1.8 billion years ago during the latter half of the Proterozoic Eon. The rocks are seen on the steep face of the Black Mountains above the current area of Badwater and were formed via deposits of mud and sand from an ancient volcanic mountain belt. Sometime between 1.8 and 1.7 billion years ago, the volcanic and sedimentary rocks were severely altered when chemical or structural changes occurred because of intense heat or pressure from the Earth's core. Because of this process, any fossilized information about the region was lost making it impossible to truly understand the origin of the region. There is some debate on whether basalt or schist was the original and dominate rock in the region before it was transformed into contorted gneiss, but again, there is no way to prove either theory. In order to do this, I will be collecting data and making observations at three different points along the river; the upper course, the middle course, and the lower course. The river which I will be conducting my observations would be on Bartley Water. Bartley Water is a river going through the New Forest which is located in the south of the UK, Hampshire. The source of the river begins from Bartley, 109m above sea level, and joins to its end at Eling, flowing into Southampton Water. The river has a length of 27km and a catchment area of 40sqkm. It is a tributary of the River Test. The river bed contains of a mixture of sand, silt and clay which can change as the river behaves due to erosion, transportation and deposition. The sites which I will be investigating on are: Site one is at Buskett's Lawn, grid reference: 309109 Site two is at Woodlands, grid reference: 325006 Site three is at Eling, grid reference: 362124 The surroundings of these areas differ at each site. As Arcadia's population grew, the demand for a school within the town itself became a constant demand, and eventually the two towns split the school. As a result, Lee's Park diminished population–wise and continued spiraling downward until the town was completely gone. By about 1890, Arcadia's population had climbed to nearly 429 people. In fact, Hunt (1975) states that "since the ground patterns of the two regions are similar, salt can be thought of as the warm form of ice." In the saltpan of Death Valley and the surrounding floodplain similarities of patterned ground between these two types of regions can be seen, and will be further described in this paper. Patterned Ground of Death Valley: The patterned ground morphologies, characteristic of playa environments, which formed as a result of the expansion and contraction of saline–rich sediments, are similar to such crack morphologies seen in periglacial environments, as a result of freeze–thaw cycles. In periglacial environments the extent of development of patterned grounds is proportional to the intensity of frost action, while in playa environments; the extent of patterned ground is proportional to salt content (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). The prominent patterned ground morphology among colder climates is ice–wedge polygons that develop on the permanently frozen ground. Similarly to the permanently frozen grounds of periglacial environments, a salt hardened ground in a playa environment can develop extensive polygonal crack morphologies (Hunt, et. al.; 1966). In desert regions, such as Death Valley, desiccation cracks that lead to the formation of polygonal systems are the most prominent crack morphologies.
